Bradford Colony 1 & 2 While there are a lot of restrictions listed on the neighborhood rules, your HOA board wants you to know that we are trying hard to keep it simple and save your money in order to use it on future expenses that may come up in the future. We have sent some letters to some residents that require action, please keep up with your home and repair things, which will avoid more expensive repairs down the road. Please contact Esquire Community Management if you have questions regarding deed restriction violations letters you received.

(BC 1&2) ARCHITECTURAL REQUESTS

Remember to submit your architectural requests to have them approved prior to beginning the work. Forms can be obtained form Esquire Community Management (phone number is listed at the back of the newsletter). You may contact any board members to submit the completed form for approval. These include any work done to the outside appearance of your home, paint, fence, sidings, new roof, major landscaping work, etc. The HOA board are all volunteers and our goals and efforts are to keep the entire neighborhood looking pleasant and not run down or chaotic, which in turn has an impact on all our property value of the subdivision. We would like to thank all homeowners who spend time and efforts to take care of the homes and yards.

(BC 1&2) Yard of the Month Yard of the month goes to the homeowner of 14607 Bradford Colony Dr. Keep up the good work! Thank you.

(BCS3) “School Back in Session Soon” Watch out for all the neighborhood children both before and after school as they wait for the bus or are walking to school.

(BCS3) MOSQUITOES AND WEST NILE VIRUS The regular and heavy rains that we have been experiencing have been a positive for building up the water supply and minimizing drought conditions, but have also spawned an outbreak of mosquitoes in the Houston area. The West Nile Virus has been reported in many areas including the 77084 zip code. It is hoped that our twice weekly mosquito spraying by Cypress Creek Pest Control will keep the mosquito population under control in BCS3 where the combination of the bayou plus the standing water in the old county sand pit creates a favorable environment for mosquito breeding.

Last month, there was a daytime burglary of a home on Vaughnville Drive. This break in took place during the one hour that the property owner was away from the house. It is therefore apparent that the thieves were watching the neighborhood waiting for an illegal opportunity. A review of the information in the area on the local “Crime Report” website indicates that there has been a rash of burglaries in The Colonies area over the past few months. One of the best ways to try to slow down and prevent such crime in BCS3 is to pay attention to what is happening in the neighborhood. Watch out for strangers or strange vehicles on our streets. Take note of key information (auto / truck description and license number, description of the individuals, etc.). And if you see something that isn’t “right,” call the Sheriff’s Department and report what is going on. Let’s watch out for each other all the time!

(BCS3) 2012 BCS3 ASSESSMENT UPDATE As of the writing of this newsletter, only one property owner has not paid their 2012 Assessment or are engaged in a payment plan to handle this payment. The Board would like to thank all the residents for taking the time and making the effort to handle this important financial obligation over the past few months.

(BCS3) YARD OF THE MONTH The July Yard of the Month winner was the Buta Singh / Sarabjit Kaur family at 14627 Searston Drive. Ever since moving into the neighborhood, they have done a great job keeping their yard and lawn looking great despite all of our extreme Houston weather conditions. The Board would like to sincerely thank all of our neighbors for their consistent efforts in keeping their properties looking as good as possible. All this work helps keep our neighborhood looking great and subsequently keeping our property values as high as possible. Congratulations for all the good work!

(BCS3) CONTACT THE BOARD As is the case with everything in our small neighborhood, every resident should feel free to contact any Board member as to any issue or question that you have about BCS3. Contact information for all the Board members is located on the inside back cover of this publication.

Charlestown Colony (ChC) Yard of the Month Due to conflicting schedules, the Yard of the Month for August will be announced in the September newsletter. Keep up the good work with the beautiful yards. The rains this spring and summer have been a real blessing. So many areas that were dead or dying have come back to life. Bugs seem to be enjoying the rains as well. The mosquitoes are especially bad. The mosquito truck has been around to spray. Do your part by checking around your home for sanding water; check the sauces of plants and any trash can lids or the cans themselves. Mosquitoes breed in standing water - they even breed in wet flower pots. Most plants do well when allowed to dry out between watering. This will help cut down on bugs. Not sure if letting a plant dry out between watering is best? You can check the internet or you can check with the experts at Cornelius Nursery. Remember Cornelius Nursery sponsors our Yard of the Month program. The Yard of the Month winner receives a gift certificate to Cornelius Nursery. Colonies August 2012 ••••••••••••

(ChC) Timely Tips for AUGUST Gardeners During the summer months, re-vitalize your garden beds. Fertilizing, pruning, new mulch and fresh plantings can all bring your flowerbeds back to life! Flowers bring color in many shades and sizes. Add an instant color impact with Celosia, Vinca (Periwinkle), Lantana and Purslane. These are all good, reliable summer bloomers. Plant these directly into beds or containers to replace flowers, which have reached their prime. Add a slow release fertilizer to the soil when you plant and you will not have to fertilize for a while. Keep old blooms trimmed off to encourage repeat blooming. Add a new layer of mulch to flowerbeds and to containers to lessen evaporation and keep the soil cooler. Color abounds even in the heat of summer!

(ChC) Annual Association meeting Don’t forget to watch for your proxy in the mail for the annual homeowners’ meeting. Traditionally, the meeting is the first Wednesday in October in the Horne Elementary School cafeteria. Start time is usually 7 pm, sign-in starting at 6:45 pm. You should be receiving information from SCS Management during September. If you cannot attend the meeting, please give your proxy to a neighbor who is attending or sign and return it to SCS Management. It is very important to have a quorum at this meeting. We did not have a quorum at the last year’s meeting. A quorum is required to conduct neighborhood business. This year, we will be electing new board members. We need at least two new members. Please consider becoming involved. If you are interested in becoming more involved in the neighborhood, contact a board member at the numbers listed at the end of this publication. More details next month.

(ChC) School is starting Soon! While it seems like we just got out of school, it is time to think about starting up. School starts Monday, August 27th. Go to www.cfisd.net/campuses/ backtoschool where you can find the “back to school” information. You can also find the summer reading lists for the books the kids were supposed to read over the summer (they still have a few weeks). Remember to pay attention to school zones and children in the neighborhood waiting for buses. Remember also that using a cell phone in a school zone carries a hefty penalty. on the following site: www.cfisd.net/dept2/transp/transp - bus information can be found. To save money Cy-Fair ISD no longer mails the “Inside CyFair” publication, but go to www.cfisd.net/newsmedia/inside/2010/inside0610 where it can be found on-line. If you have kids in school, bookmark the site. Even for those without kids in school, you will find useful information about the district and electrons for school board members or bond issues here. Don’t have access to a computer or the internet? All Harris County public libraries have computers available for public use. Need school supplies? The tax free weekend is right before school starts August 17th-19th. Items purchased must have an initial price less than $100. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. Go to www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/tx98_490/tx98_490 where you can find additional details. Keep collecting Box Tops for Horne Elementary. Every Box Top is worth 10 cents to the school. What a simple and easy way to help Horne provide more for our neighborhood children. Truitt collects these also!

(ChC) Trash Talk After a long, holiday weekend of yard work and entertaining there is always a lot of trash. However, those that collect trash do get holidays also. There will be NO Trash Pick-Up on Labor Day.

Although the longest day of the year is in June, August is traditionally the hottest month in Southeast Texas. Your lawn will need the most care this month to get through those scorching hot days. Experts say it is best to water your lawn in the mornings before things heat up. In addition, it is a good idea to mow a few inches higher during this period to assure your grass retains as much water as possible. If it does rain, take care to not overwater your lawn.

Prolonged exposure in the sun can take its toll on anyone this time of year. If you have activities planned outside, try to wear light, loose-fitting clothing, along with sunscreen to protect your skin and a hat to protect your face and head and drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. Make a special effort to check on your neighbors, especially the elderly. These temperatures can be dangerous. It was recently stated in a USA Today article that the Safe Kids Worldwide organization reported 550 cases nationwide of fatal incidents where children have been left in cars since 1998. In 52% of the cases, the parents didn’t realize they had left the children there. Please be extra careful with both children and pets and never leave them in hot vehicles even for a short time. Some researchers believe August is the most popular vacation month. Everyone should be vigilant for yourself and your neighbors to help keep our community crime free during this period and all year round. If you see any suspicious activities, please call 911 or the Harris County Sheriff’s Department at 713-221-6000. It might seem hard to believe, but school begins again before the end of this month. The 2012-2013 Cypress-Fairbanks school year starts on Monday, August 27th. As always, we should exercise care when driving around in our neighborhood and stay mindful of the children during their last days of summer and the beginning of their new school year.

Don’t forget the upcoming Labor Day holiday is on Monday, September 3rd. The holiday is meant to celebrate the economic and social contributions of workers in this blessed country we live in. It traditionally marks the end of summer, although the official beginning of autumn is a few weeks later in the month (September 22nd). For many, it is the last 3-day weekend before the holidays. However, you plan on spending this holiday, please enjoy it and do so with care. We hope everyone will be able to look back on a wonderful summer as we look forward to some upcoming cooler temperatures. Since this article is prepared well in advance of its publication, we cannot anticipate the drought conditions by the time you read this. (CC) SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO THINK ABOUT

• Do you think people are more violently opposed to fur rather than leather because it’s much easier to harass rich women than motorcycle gangs? • Does it worry anyone else that what doctors call what they do “practice?” • When tempted to fight fire with fire, remember that the Fire Department usually uses water. • In theory, theory and practice are the same…. In practice, they are not. • The most important thing is that the most important thing is the most important thing.

First of all, we want to thank all of the homeowners in our subdivision who take the time to keep their yards mowed and shrubs trimmed. It is a pleasure to drive though the neighborhood and see green grass, edged/trimmed and flowers in bloom. We are going to force mow all yards that are not maintained on a regular basis and the homeowner will be sent the bill for the service provided. Please let’s work together to make this a neighborhood of which we can be proud.

(GC1) PIT BULL ATTACK A word of caution to anyone who walks the neighborhood. One of our resident’s dogs was attacked by two pit bulls at the back of the subdivision along Georgetown Colony Drive while being walked by their owner. The little dachshund was bitten and required stitches but luckily, a man who was in his yard, came to the aid of the dog, grabbing him up out of the dog’s mouth. The pit bulls, then, turned on him and he had to jump on a car to escape their attack. The dogs ran back to their home, so we know where these two came from. Police and animal control were notified. Whether you are a dog owner or not, take caution while walking and be aware of your surroundings. It would be a good idea to carry a stick, umbrella or some type of protection in order to fend off an approaching dog. Those of you who are dog owners, please keep your dogs securely fenced or on a leash. We will be cracking down on ANY dog seen outside without a leash and animal control will be notified. Even if you are WITH THE DOG WALKING and the dog is unleashed, you will be advised that there is a leash law and the dog should remain on a leash while outside. Those residents who fail to comply, will be reported to animal control. Also, please be good neighbors and clean up after your dogs. This neighborhood belongs to all of us and we want to insure the safety of everyone, animals and people alike. Thank you for your cooperation.

(JC) TRAFFIC LIGHT INSTALLATION - WLY & HUFFMEISTER

The county will be installing a traffic light at West Little York and Huffmeister in early to midJuly. Some of you will hate this and some of you will love it, but it will happen, so just get used to it. On the positive side, it will be safer to enter WLY from Huffmeister.

(JC) NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

Jamestown will be celebrating National Night Out again this year. The observance falls on October 2nd in Texas this year (NOT on—oh, my goodness - August 7th, like the rest of the country), since we sensibly wait for the worst of the summer heat to pass before we socialize out of doors. More details will be upcoming in future issues, but we might move our observance to the weekend and we hope to find a special incentive for you to come out and meet your neighbors this year, so put this week in October on your calendar.

(JC) BACK TO SCHOOL Cy-Fair schools go back into session on August 27th, but many students will start attending band camps and practices and other school activities starting at the end of July, so remember to observe those school zones at the end of this month. (JC) HOA ASSESSMENTS DUE Of the approximately 400 houses in the 3 Jamestown sections, 7% have not yet paid their 2012 assessments - that’s at least 28 homeowners that are relying on their neighbors to pick up the slack for them. Remember that your homeowner assessment was due January 1st and began to accrue late fees & penalties after January 31st. You can either send a check to ACMP based on the 2012 statement sent to you or you can pay online at www.jamestowncolony.com (if you pay online, you are responsible for any service fees for your online payment). If you can’t pay the entire assessment at one time, contact ACMP at 281-855-9867 to arrange a payment plan. As long as you make such arrangements and stick to the payment plan, you will not be assessed penalties and late fees. 1. Please don’t deface our flagpoles by using them as bulletin boards. If you have a lost dog or cat, a notice at the entrance stop sign are more effective (and should be taken down after just a few days, please). 2. Please take down your garage sale signs the day your sale is done. If you don’t, your neighbors are justified in removing the signs themselves and placing them in your yard. This neighborhood is our home, not a trash dump. 3. Recycle soap scraps - all those odds and ends and leftovers from motels shouldn’t be thrown away…. RECYCLE THEM. • Recycle soap scraps into new bar soap - Place 2 cups of grated soap scraps in a saucepan and cover them with water. Let them soak for 24 hours, giving them a stir every now and then. Next, bring the pan to a boil, remove it from heat and add a tablespoon of vegetable oil for each cupful of soap soup. Then, pour the mixture into molds (milk cartons work great). After they’ve hardened, you can cut them into smaller bars, but let them cure for 2 weeks before you use them. • Mix the old soap with a little glycerin from the pharmacy. Melt in the microwave. Use as hand soap in reused hand soap containers. I’ve also just mixed soap scraps with water and used it for hand soap (you have to shake the container before squirting sometimes). • Put the soap bits in an old sock or a cloth bag. Hang the cloth bag from the shower head. Use it for washing your body, like soap on a rope. Next month - recycling candle scraps - don’t throw those bits and pieces away!

SALES TAX HOLIDAY AUGUST 17 - 19, 2012 In 2012, Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on August 17th, 18th and 19th - the state’s annual tax holiday. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Go to www.window. state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/tx98_490/ tx98_490.html for details on included items and restrictions.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through August. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

281-788-2047 GARDEN TIPS FOR August

Chicken-Spinach-Strawberry Salad 3/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon dry mustard 1/3 cup red wine vinegar 1 teaspoon onion juice 1 cup vegetable oil 1 tablespoon poppy seeds (optional) 1 cup sliced almonds 6 cups torn fresh spinach 1 quart strawberries, sliced 3 kiwifruit, peeled and sliced 3 cups chopped cooked chicken

Process first 5 ingredients in a blender until smooth, stopping once to scrape down sides. Turn blender on high and add vegetable oil in a slow, steady st http://www.marketingmelodie.com/wp-content/uploads/Back-toSchool.jpg ream. Pour mixture into a serving bowl and stir in poppy seeds, if desired. Chill. Bake almonds in a shallow pan at 350°, stirring occasionally, 5 to 10 minutes or until toasted. Place torn spinach on individual serving plates; top with sliced strawberries, kiwifruit, chicken and toasted almonds. Serve with dressing. Yield: 6 to 8 servings

Orange Ice Cream 1 cup heavy cream 2 cups orange juice

1 cup thin cream Sugar (to taste)

Add cream slowly to orange juice, sweeten to taste and freeze. Freeze for 1 1/2 hours. Remove and stir with a whisk. Return to the freezer and stir about once every hour for about 4 hours. The more times you stir, the more air will be incorporated, resulting in a lighter finished product.

• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.
