Welcome Mike Crahan, CMCA

Mike joined Cypress Mill as Community Manager in April and has been busy getting his feet wet and catching up on his duties. He has worked with homeowners associations for the past 14 years and prior to that worked developing neighborhoods for 10 years; during which time, Mike worked with attorneys and engineers in constructing streets and water systems for several water districts. Mike is experienced in contracting for neighborhood pools, playgrounds, parking lots, clubhouses, tennis courts and other amenities for new communities having learned that each community has its own uniqueness. Mike’s goal is to discuss every item with a homeowner to resolve their issue and help the HOA accomplish its financial goals. Mike stated, “I am now bringing my past work experiences with me to Principal Management Group of Houston to manage Cypress Mill Homeowners Association successfully.” You can contact Mike at 281-213-3184 or M.Crahan@pmghouston.com (email).

big thank you

A big thank you to Dena Loughlin for organizing articles for the Cypress Mill newsletter. Dena also drives cancer patients down to the medical center. As you can see, Dena has worked hard on this issue and is always looking for ideas and articles for the newsletter. If a homeowner would like to submit information for the newsletter or to recognize someone in Cypress Mill for their good actions, please send to m.crahan@pmghouston.com.

New pool patio Finally, that muddy area of grass between the meeting room and the pool fence has been replaced by a beautiful new stamped patio. This had been under discussion for some time and finally the decision was made to go ahead and it looks great … check it out. The cost was in the region of $10,000 and well worth it. Hopefully, we’ll soon be seeing more new patio furniture around the pool. Pool fence painting By the time you receive this newsletter, painting of the wrought iron fence around Mill Park Lane pool should be completed. After that, painting of the other wrought iron fences will continue throughout the summer.

BUYING OR SELLING A HOUSE? Customer service is my top priority... I pledge to provide my clients with a high level of service, integrity, and professionalism.

Here are some simple reminders for drivers: • Slow down and be especially alert in the residential neighborhoods and school zones. • Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs. • Enter and exit driveways slowly and carefully. • Watch for children on and near the road in the morning and after school hours, especially before daylight. • Reduce any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. Put down your phone and don’t talk or text while driving. Reminder for your kids: • They should cross the street with an adult until they are at least 10 years old. • Never run out into the streets or cross in between parked cars. • Make sure they always walk in front of the bus where the driver can see them.

Retention ponds/walking paths

We are lucky to have the MUD provide walking paths around our retention ponds. It should be a safe place for walkers, joggers and young children, especially in the early morning and late afternoon. It is not meant as a racetrack for bicycles. Please be courteous, slow down and give walkers plenty of warning when coming up from behind.

GARDEN TIPS FOR August

• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

What’s happening in Cypress Mill? Do you want to know what’s happening in your neighborhood without waiting for the Messenger? If so, please let your block captain have your email address so that they can keep you informed of current news and events.

Kimberly Akimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, November 29-December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.
