WEBSITE
Please visit the association’s website. With a more attractive, easy to use design, the site contains a lot of useful information, including HOA news, quick reference numbers, free classifieds and a library of association forms and documents. If you think of anything you would like added, please let us know. The only thing that has not changed is the address. It is still at www.hearthstonehoa.org.
UNDERAGE DRIVERS IN GOLF CARTS
We have been asked to remind parents and all Hearthstone residents that a license is required to operate a motor vehicle on public streets. This includes golf carts. Too often, we see underage drivers operating golf carts on the streets, sometimes in careless ways and we don’t want to see them (or anyone else) injured. The association has asked the Harris County Constables to be vigilant about this. They will take whatever action the Constable’s Office deems appropriate.
HEARTHSTONE HOA EMAIL ALERTS
The email alerts group has migrated to the new, improved website. You no longer need to send an email to the management company. Just register at the site using “Join our Mailing Lists on the opening page. You will be automatically added to the email group. This group will be used to quickly but sparingly, get information out to members between newsletters. If you would like these messages sent to more than one email address, just register again with each address you want included in the group. The addresses will not be sold, distributed or used for any purpose other than association business. Your address will not even be shared among group members. Messages sent to the group will be limited to those authorized by the HOA Board of Directors. If you have already joined the email group, you do not need to do so again.
HEARTHSTONE EXTERIOR MODIFICATIONS
When making any changes to the exterior of your home, please keep in mind that you must first submit an application and receive written approval. An application can be obtained by sending a request to customercare@pcmi-us.com. The PCMI call center is manned by three people. The main number is 281-870-0585. The hours are 7:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Thursday and 7:00 am to 5:00 pm on Fridays.
Hearthstone Mom’s Co-op
If you’ve ever considered joining a mom’s group, look no further! We are located right here in Hearthstone! Our group is a great way to get to know other moms, help children make friends with future or current classmates and if you are new to the area, give you insight into the best places to eat, bring the kids, etc. We hope that you will join us at one of our meetings and/or join us at an event! Dues are only $30 per year. Published by: Krenek Printing 7102 Glen Chase Ct • Houston, TX 77095 • 281-463-8649

REGISTER NOW FOR FALL!
Weekend College, workforce certificates, First Year Communities, Dual Credit courses and more!
• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

Scouts Copper Corners Service Unit Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council
Girl Scouts in the United States have been celebrating 100 years of Scouting and the Copper Corners Service Unit has been joining in the excitement! On March 30th, we held a birthday celebration, with cake and lots of party games face painting, dancing and fun. As a service project, troops prepared “birthday parties in a box” (everything you need for a birthday party. These beautifully decorated gift boxes were donated to Cypress Assistance Ministries. The birthday party and activities were planned and run by Troop 16018, Troop 16043 and Troop 16053. On April 29th, Copper Corners Service Unit had a “Chalk in the Park” event, at the Langham Creek YMCA. Girls and their families came together to create sidewalk chalk art representing things that Girl Scouts enjoy doing. Older Scouts served snow cones and popcorn and everyone joined in a sing along under the pavilion that finished up with a Friendship Circle. We would like to express special thanks to the Langham Creek YMCA for making this afternoon event possible. Thanks also to Julie Mayer, the event organizer and to all those who helped make it a success. We are all looking forward to the B.I.G. Council event on September 29th at the George R. Brown Convention Center. It will be a Believe in Girls event,

as well as an event for every Girl Scout in GSSJC. That makes for one really BIG event and a great chance to learn about all the opportunities available in San Jacinto Council. Check your Golden Link or the GSSJC website for more information. While summer is a time for Girl Scouts and their leaders to enjoy time with friends and family, many of our girls have been attending council camps. GSSJC offers resident, day and twilight camps and there are many things to do there. Whether it is trail riding at Misty Meadows, learning to crew a “big boat” at Casa Mare or one of the many other camp activities, we know that they are having fun, learning new skills and making friends. Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council Copper Corners Service Unit serves all girls in the residence areas for Lowery, Birkes, Fiest Elementary Schools, Aragon and Labay Middle Schools and corresponding high schools. Once school is back in session, we will be holding rallies to form new troops and welcome new scouts and new leaders. Don’t forget that girls can get involved at any age level and that home schoolers and private school students are always welcome. Be on the lookout for more information on rally dates!!

Texas Representative Duane Bohac honored four Eagle Scouts at their court of honor: from left: Ryan Patrick Andrew Juergens, Rep. Bohac, Bishop Ron Barrow (leader of the church sponsoring Troop 996), Larry Heki and Quinn Taylor.
BOY SCOUT TROOP 996 - Four Scouts Honored with Eagle Rank
Four Eagle Scouts held a combined court of honor celebrating their attainment of Boy Scouts of America’s highest rank. The four young men, all of troop 996, sponsored by the Copperfield Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, are Andrew Juergens, Larry Heki, Quinn Taylor and Ryan Patrick. Only about five percent of Boy Scouts persevere to reach the rank of Eagle, so having four from one troop at the same time is outstanding. Each Eagle Scout has completed at least 21 merit badges and has served in a series of leadership roles and he must complete a self-directed major project. The accomplishment says much about the character of the young man, but also much about his scout leaders and parents, who have encouraged him over many years. During the June 27th court of honor ceremony, Texas Rep. Duane Bohac honored the Eagles as guest speaker. Andrew Juergens is the son of Kurt and Gretchen Juergens. He is about to start his senior year at Langham Creek High School. His Eagle project was to collect used baseball and softball equipment, donated to RBI (Recycled Baseball Items). The baseball equipment will be used for inner city baseball teams and the softball equipment will be sent to troops overseas.

Larry Heki is the son of Scott and Charlotte Heki. He graduated from Langham Creek High School in 2010. Larry actually completed his Eagle requirements last summer, but left for a year of study at Brigham Young University before there was time to celebrate with a court of honor. His Eagle project was done for the Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District’s Nature Trails facility. It was a conservation project in which he led and participated in the removal of an invasive species of water plant, the parrotfeather, a noxious weed that is a native water plant of the Amazon River in South America. He also built two new floating platforms to place in the pond for the turtles, ducks and other wildlife to use to sun themselves or to rest on. Larry has been studying chemistry and leaves in late August to serve as a missionary for two years in Finland. Quinn Taylor is the son of Tim and Janet Taylor and the third in the family to earn the rank of Eagle. His project was completed for Houston Marine Moms. He organized the collection and sorting of donations used for care packages sent to Marines serving in Afghanistan. Quinn is a well-known basketball player for Langham Creek High School. He will be attending Utah State University on a basketball scholarship this fall, studying civil engineering. After his freshman year he plans to serve as a missionary for two years before returning to sports and school. Ryan Patrick is also a basketball player. It was through his basketball friendship with Quinn Taylor, starting in third grade, that Ryan learned of scouting and got involved in Troop 996. He is the son of Rich and Jeannie Patrick. His project was to make large animal feeders for Boys and Girls Country. Many of the students at Boys and Girls Country participate in FFA (Future Farmers of America) competitions with the hope of earning college scholarships. Ryan’s project was to help them in their efforts. Ryan will be attending Texas A&M University this fall, in the Mays School of Business.

Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through August. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

GIVE AN HOUR™ NETWORK Provides Free Counseling to Troops and Families
Since September 11, 2001, 1.8 million troops have been deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf, with 17 percent of returning troops suffering traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder. Given the military culture’s emphasis on confidence, strength and bravery, many service members are reluctant to expose personal vulnerabilities to professional counselors. Give an Hour™ provides services that are separate from the military establishment, offering options to service members who might otherwise fail to seek or receive appropriate care. Give an Hour™ is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national network of mental health professionals providing free counseling services to returning troops and their families. Give an Hour™ offers services to veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and their family members. Family members are loosely defined to include married or unmarried partners, parents, siblings, aunts/ uncles—anyone connected to the veteran who is suffering a psychological effect related to the veteran’s service. Banyan Counseling Network has an office located near the North Cypress Medical Center and is trained to provide individual and family counseling. Family support groups are also currently forming. People interested in receiving services through Give an Hour™ are encouraged to call 281-8551982 or log on to www.banyancounseling.com, (click Military Families link) or www.giveanhour.org to determine availability or to locate another provider in your area.

HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal.
Yamaha portable grand keyboard with stand, chair and headphones, like new, $450. 281-861-8023.
Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.”
Ashley, leather, reclining loveseat, like new, $1,000. 281-861-8023.
Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.
