Help Needed For Foster Kitten and Puppy Program
We are Twin Lakes residents and we are involved with the foster program for the Houston SPCA. This program helps abandoned kitten and puppies until they are old enough to be put up for adoption. Anyone wanting to help this wonderful program is encouraged to donate clean towels and washcloths (preferably white or light colors), small stuffed animals, non-clumping cat sand and older heating pads that do not have an automatic shut-off. The SPCA is always looking for volunteers as well - to help in this program. For information and drop-off of donations, please contact: Jill Lokay Phone: 832-328-8186 Address: 5351 Summer Snow Drive (Twin Lakes)
SALES TAX HOLIDAY AUGUST 17 - 19, 2012 In 2012, Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on August 17th, 18th and 19th - the state’s annual tax holiday. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Go to www.window.state. tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/tx98_490/tx98_490.html for details on included items and restrictions.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through August. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

GARDEN TIPS FOR August
MICROCHIPPING - FOR YOUR DOG OR CAT At the Lakes on Eldridge Clubhouse, Saturday, August 18, 2012 from 8 AM to 12 Noon. Cost: $20 It is very important that any pet gets microchipped. If you don’t think it is, check around to see how many “LOST DOG” signs you see in Houston and in our neighborhood. A nametag is very important too, because someone can read it easily, but collars can come off and tags can fall off or become faded. A microchip lasts for the lifetime of the animal and never has to be replaced. Take advantage of this great service we’re lucky to be able to provide at the Community Information Event at the Lakes on Eldridge Clubhouse on August 18, 2012 from 8 AM to 12 noon. We, the Lakes on Eldridge Pet Safety Committee, will be offering microchipping at a great discount. The microchip we are using provides international service, which is great for residents who might be traveling abroad, are planning on moving sometime in the future or for the many Expats in our neighborhood.

• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment. Stylist Position Available

BOY SCOUTS
Texas Representative Duane Bohac honored four Eagle Scouts at their court of honor: from left: Ryan Patrick Andrew Juergens, Rep. Bohac, Bishop Ron Barrow (leader of the church sponsoring Troop 996), Larry Heki and Quinn Taylor.
BOY SCOUT TROOP 996 Four Scouts Honored with Eagle Rank
Four Eagle Scouts held a combined court of honor celebrating their attainment of Boy Scouts of America’s highest rank. The four young men, all of troop 996, sponsored by the Copperfield Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, are Andrew Juergens, Larry Heki, Quinn Taylor and Ryan Patrick. Only about five percent of Boy Scouts persevere to reach the rank of Eagle, so having four from one troop at the same time is outstanding. Each Eagle Scout has completed at least 21 merit badges and has served in a series of leadership roles and he must complete a selfdirected major project. The accomplishment says much about the character of the young man, but also much about his scout leaders and parents, who have encouraged him over many years. During the June 27th court of honor ceremony, Texas Rep. Duane Bohac honored the Eagles as guest speaker. Andrew Juergens is the son of Kurt and Gretchen Juergens. He is about to start his senior year at Langham Creek High School. His Eagle project was to collect used baseball and softball equipment, donated to RBI (Recycled Baseball Items). The baseball equipment will be used for inner city baseball teams and the softball equipment will be sent to troops overseas.
8
Larry Heki is the son of Scott and Charlotte Heki. He graduated from Langham Creek High School in 2010. Larry actually completed his Eagle requirements last summer, but left for a year of study at Brigham Young University before there was time to celebrate with a court of honor. His Eagle project was done for the Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District’s Nature Trails facility. It was a conservation project in which he led and participated in the removal of an invasive species of water plant, the parrotfeather, a noxious weed that is a native water plant of the Amazon River in South America. He also built two new floating platforms to place in the pond for the turtles, ducks and other wildlife to use to sun themselves or to rest on. Larry has been studying chemistry and leaves in late August to serve as a missionary for two years in Finland. Quinn Taylor is the son of Tim and Janet Taylor and the third in the family to earn the rank of Eagle. His project was completed for Houston Marine Moms. He organized the collection and sorting of donations used for care packages sent to Marines serving in Afghanistan. Quinn is a well-known basketball player for Langham Creek High School. He will be attending Utah State University on a basketball scholarship this fall, studying civil engineering. After his freshman year he plans to serve as a missionary for two years before returning to sports and school. Ryan Patrick is also a basketball player. It was through his basketball friendship with Quinn Taylor, starting in third grade, that Ryan learned of scouting and got involved in Troop 996. He is the son of Rich and Jeannie Patrick. His project was to make large animal feeders for Boys and Girls Country. Many of the students at Boys and Girls Country participate in FFA (Future Farmers of America) competitions with the hope of earning college scholarships. Ryan’s project was to help them in their efforts. Ryan will be attending Texas A&M University this fall, in the Mays School of Business.

Cy-Fair Women’s Club Women Serving the Community Making a difference is what we strive for all year long. It was an honor creating the Breast Cancer Pillows this month and it was a pleasure to meet our scholarship recipients during our June meeting. We wish them all great success in their personal endeavors. We are very proud to have had the opportunity to support several organizations again this year. A few of these organizations are Reach Unlimited, Mission of Yahweh, Cy-Hope, Cypress Assistance Ministries, Magnificat House and the Glory Ranch. Our goal is to continue assisting our community and making a personal difference. Please remember to come join us in August, as we are all looking forward to a SPA like experience to help us prepare for our very special marketplace event “Shop Til You Drop” on September 8th. Mark your calendars. You don’t want to miss this event! CWC is a service organization that gives back to the community, so all funds raised will go right back to the community in scholarships for graduating high school seniors, at Lone Star College, Cy-Fair and grants to other non-profits in our community as well. Membership for the Cy-Fair Women’s Club is open to all ladies in Northwest Houston/Cypress neighborhoods. Currently we meet the first Thursday of most months at West Houston Church of Christ. Our meetings begin with social time and refreshments at 7:00 PM immediately followed by a program at 7:30 PM. The church is located at the corner of Queenston and West Road. Our monthly meetings are not only educational and enjoyable, but they develop lasting fellowships. We look forward to meeting you there! Please contact Susan McLeroy, Membership Chair at sudomac@comcast.net if you have any questions about our club or need directions to the church.

Mildred’s Umbrella Theater Company 2012-2013 Season Museum of Dysfunction, August 9-18, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, November 29-December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

(A Barbershop Chorus) We are a ladies daytime chorus with approximately 30 members. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 30 years. We sing old favorites and contemporary tunes arranged in the barbershop style. The four parts creating the barbershop sound are Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass. We rehearse Friday mornings from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center located at 2501 Westerland, off Westheimer and Gessner. We love to have visitors and even more when you decide to join our chorus. For additional information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or decibelle@comcast.net (email). We perform two types of shows each year. Currently we are singing a selection of patriotic songs, Johnny Mathis’ “Chances Are,” Perry Como’s “Hot Diggity Dog” and other fun tunes. You’ll be singing along with us before you know it. Our Christmas show includes old favorites, but also includes new fun tunes with props, narratives and choreography. We’ll begin preparing that program in October and book performances for the first two weeks in December. Come visit any Friday and see how much fun you can have with us.

Three Brothers Will Serve as Missionaries Twins Eric and Aaron Heki, along with their younger brother Larry, are about to serve as missionaries in far-flung countries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Eric will be sent to Durban, South Africa for two years. Aaron will be serving nearby in Johannesburg, South Africa. Larry will be serving in Helsinki, Finland. All will be starting in the Mission Training Center in Provo, Utah. Larry will arrive there late August, a couple of weeks before his brothers and will stay a few weeks longer for language training - although most of the Finnish language will come once he’s in the country speaking it full time. All three graduated from Langham Creek High School in 2011. All three played in the marching band there: Eric played trombone, Aaron played tuba and Larry played French horn. All three are Eagle Scouts, earning the BSA’s highest rank. Eric’s Eagle project was to build raised flower beds for Copperfield Estates independent senior living center. Go to www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/ taxpubs/tx98_490/tx98_490.html for details on included items and restrictions.
