From The Lakeside Residential Board
August 27th - First Day of School
Last year we had one of the worst summers in many decades, exceptionally high temperatures and no rain. The summer left communities with ruined gardens, trees, lawns, etc. Lakeside Residential was no exception. Despite all of the hard work by the homeowners and watering the lawns regularly, lots of yards in the community suffered drought. Lawns and plants have dried out. Only a few homeowners were lucky to maintain the lawn green and healthy. Now that we are again in summer, lawns should begin to look their best. For lawns that have weeds, they should be treated, any dead shrubs or trees should be replaced and for those who were not able to save their lawn due to the drought, new sod should be installed in order to prevent receiving a violation letter from the association. Our management conducts monthly inspections of the community in order to bring properties into compliance with the Lakeside Residential Deed Restriction requirements. Based on the inspection findings, some residents are notified of the deed restriction violations. Most of the deed restriction violations in our community are corrected promptly; however, there are some lags. It is good for our community and our property values that we comply with the deed restriction requirements and keep our neighborhood beautiful. After all, we love our community! Common Deed Restriction Violations • Boats, cars, trucks, trailers, wrecker trucks and inoperable vehicles or other such items stored on the driveway or on neighborhood streets are not permitted within the community. Please do not park your car on a regular basis in front of your neighbor’s house or behind their driveways. Commercial vehicles are not allowed to be parked or stored in your driveway or on the streets. • Improper lawn and beds maintenance. (Lawns should be mowed and edged; flowerbeds should be weeded and mulched. Lawns were installed with St. Augustine grass, if the majority of the lawn is not made up of St. Augustine grass please have the lawn treated for weeds or new sod installed. • Mildew or mold growing on the house, fence or other property needs to be cleaned off. Oil stains in driveway or street need to be regularly cleaned and/or power washed to avoid leaving a stain. • Items such as garden hoses, ladders, coolers, grills, etc. that are in the front yard, on the driveway or in a location visible from the street need to be properly stored so that they are not in view of the street. Garbage cans, trash bags rubbish or other debris are in the driveways in front of the garages, visible from the street instead of being properly stored or disposed of need to also be stored out of view from the street. • No animals, livestock or poultry shall be raised, bred or kept on any portion of the Association except for dogs, cats or other usual and common household pets not to exceed a total of 2 pets per household. • Unapproved structures that are visible from the street are in violation. All improvements and structures require ACC approval prior to installation. • Construction bricks are NOT considered an approved landscape border. The construction bricks that were left over from the house being built are not allowed to be used in or around the landscaping. • Signs for garage sales should be removed immediately after the event has happened and signs for lost pets should be taken down after they are found.

SALES TAX HOLIDAY AUGUST 17 - 19, 2012
In 2012, Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on August 17th, 18th and 19th - the state’s annual tax holiday. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Go to www.window.state.tx.us/ taxinfo/taxpubs/tx98_490/tx98_490.html for details on included items and restrictions.

Neighborly reminder
This is a beautiful community. In helping to keep it that way, it would be great to remind people that they should clean up after their pets. It is great for people to have pets and love their pets, but being a good neighbor is also important. We can’t tell you how bad it feels to put work and money into your yard so that you and your family can enjoy it and play in it... but then you find that other people have left disgusting feces on your yard - for you to find and clean up! It is simply not fair. Please be courteous and clean up after your pets!
Home Improvement – ACC Application
The Architectural Control Committee would like to remind you that approval is needed before you begin an exterior project or change to your home. This includes exterior painting, new roofs, fences, pools, basketball goals, etc. With your completed ACC form, please note what is needed for your type of improvement such as, photos, paint samples, solar screen samples, drawings, brochure, lot survey and your signature. If these items are not submitted with your application, your request is denied and returned to you for completion. Please read the application carefully. • A lot survey is an architectural drawing of your property showing your home, easements and building lines. A copy usually comes with your closing papers. • Please show on the survey in a distinguishable color, other than black ink, the location of your project. • Faxed pictures come across as a solid black picture, so please mail or email pictures. Faxed pictures cannot be used.

Back to School Safety Tips
With summer coming to an end and the start of the school year just around the corner, Safe Kids USA reminds parents and drivers to do their part to keep kids safe as they walk to school. Parents should be proactive and take the time to talk about safety with their kids before they head back to school. Adults can teach and model the following safety behaviors that all children should follow, even if they don’t walk to school every day. Here are some simple reminders for drivers: • Slow down and be especially alert in the residential neighborhoods and school zones • Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs • Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully • Watch for children on and near the road in the morning and after school hours • Reduce any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. Put down your phone and don’t talk or text while driving
Back to school Survival Tips For Kids
Here are some more things that can help put you ahead in school: • The old saying “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” is never more true than when you’re going to school. Students are more alert and perform better in class if they eat a good breakfast. • Get enough sleep. Studies show that teens need at least 8½ hours of sleep each night to feel rested. Sleep deprivation can lead students to fall asleep in class (embarrassing if you’re caught!) and can also make it hard to concentrate. It can be more productive to get the sleep you need than it is to stay up late cramming: A recent study found that students who got adequate sleep before a math test were nearly three times more likely to figure out the problem than those who stayed up all night. • Do more at school and you’ll have less to do at home. Take advantage of those times during the school day when you’re not in class: Review notes, go to the library or computer lab, get a head-start on your homework, or research that big term paper. You’ll be thankful later while you’re at the mall or a concert and your classmates are stuck at home cramming! • One of the best ways to make friends and learn your way around is by joining school clubs, sports teams, and activities. Even if you can’t kick a 30-yard field goal or sing a solo, getting involved in other ways — going to a school play, helping with a bake sale, or cheering on friends at a swim meet — can help you feel like a part of things. School is a time to make friends and try new things, but it’s also a place to learn skills like organization and decision making that will come in handy for the rest of your life.
Reminder for your kids: • They should cross the street with an adult until they are at least 10 years old • Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks • Never run out into the streets or cross in between parked cars • Make sure they always walk in front of the bus where the driver can see them

GARDEN TIPS FOR August
www.myshakeology.com/LauraGreen Have questions? Call me at 713-443-9319
• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.
DECIBELLES (A Barbershop Chorus)
We are a ladies daytime chorus with approximately 30 members. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 30 years. We sing old favorites and contemporary tunes arranged in the barbershop style. The four parts creating the barbershop sound are Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass. We rehearse Friday mornings from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center located at 2501 Westerland, off Westheimer and Gessner. We love to have visitors and even more when you decide to join our chorus. For additional information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or decibelle@ comcast.net (email). We perform two types of shows each year. Currently we are singing a selection of patriotic songs, Johnny Mathis’ “Chances Are,” Perry Como’s “Hot Diggity Dog” and other fun tunes. You’ll be singing along with us before you know it. Our Christmas show includes old favorites, but also includes new fun tunes with props, narratives and choreography. We’ll begin preparing that program in October and book performances for the first two weeks in December. Come visit any Friday and see how much fun you can have with us.

Red, White and Blue Festival a Success The Board would like to thank all of the wonderful volunteers and families that came out to the Red, White and Blue Festival on July 4th. So many Lakeside residents were kind enough to donate their time, grills and Sam’s cards to this great event. A special thanks to Judy Brassell, Tammy and Bryan Hooper, Bryan Rose, Steve and Debi Hinton, Byria Hamblin, Wil Hamblin and Rick Y’barbo for all of their help. Southwest Pools did a great job of providing some fun games, drinks and prizes for the kids at our pool. The success of this event is due to all of the work our volunteers and lifeguards put into it. Thanks! Annual Dues If you would like to prepay your 2013 dues or are behind in paying this year’s dues, please contact PCMI at 281-870-0585. Neighborly reminder
This is a beautiful community. In helping to keep it that way, it would be great to remind people that they should clean up after their pets. It is great for people to have pets and love their pets, but being a good neighbor is also important. We can’t tell you how bad it feels to put work and money into your yard so that you and your family can enjoy it and play in it... but then you find that other people have left disgusting feces on your yard for you to find and clean up! It is simply not fair. Please be courteous and clean up after your pets!

GARDEN TIPS FOR August

August 2012
