SCHOOL WILL BE BACK IN SESSION THIS MONTH School will be back in session soon! Please drive slowly, watch for children and stop for school buses loading and unloading. First day of school is August 27th.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY We want our students to enjoy their years in school and to return safely to us each afternoon. To ensure their safety, go over a few simple rules with them. Practice with your younger child how to safely wait for and board the school bus. Go over bicycling procedures if they are riding a bike to school. And don’t forget your older child that may be driving. They are at particular risk and need your guidance. Below are more tips to review with your children:

Riding the School Bus

• Have a safe place to wait for your bus, away from traffic and the street. • Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the driver signals you to enter. • When being dropped off, exit the bus and walk ten giant steps away from the bus. Keep a safe distance between you and the bus. Also, remember that the bus driver can see you best when you are back away from the bus. • Use the handrail to enter and exit the bus. • Stay away from the bus until the driver gives his/her signal that it’s okay to approach. • Be aware of the street traffic around you. Drivers are required to follow certain rules of the road concerning school buses, however, not all do. Protect yourself and watch out!

Walking and Biking to School

• Mind all traffic signals and/or the crossing guard -- never cross the street against a light, even if you don’t see any traffic coming. • Walk your bike through intersections. • Walk with a buddy. • Wear reflective material...it makes you more visible to street traffic.

Riding in a Car

• You might have heard before that most traffic crashes occur close to home... they do. • Safety belts are the best form of protection passengers have in the event of a crash. They can lower your risk of injury by 45%. • You are four times more likely to be seriously injured or killed if ejected from the vehicle in a crash. • Everyone needs to be buckled up properly. That means older kids in seat belts, younger kids in booster seats and little kids in child safety seats.

recycling for Villages of Langham Creek Villages of Langham Creek residents, we have recycling. You simply need to call Republic Waste at 281-446-2030 and ask for a bin to start recycling. If you belong to MUD 166, they pick up on Thursdays. They’ll even email the list of everything they recycle as well.

• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

LOST YOUR PET?

Veterinary Public Health DIVISION (Formerly called Harris County Animal Control) The Veterinary Public Health Division posts photos of all animals found on their website and updates it twice daily. If you have lost your pet, please check this website. www.countypets.com.

Veterinary Public Health Division HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

REMINDER OF HARRIS COUNTY BANNING OF SALE OF ANIMALS ALONG PUBLIC ROADS

In 2007, Harris County moved to ban sales of animals along public roads and parking lots in unincorporated areas. A violation is a Class C misdemeanor which can mean a $500 fine.

Cy-Fair Women’s Club Women Serving the Community Making a difference is what we strive for all year long. It was an honor creating the Breast Cancer Pillows this month and it was a pleasure to meet our scholarship recipients during our June meeting. We wish them all great success in their personal endeavors. We are very proud to have had the opportunity to support several organizations again this year. A few of these organizations are Reach Unlimited, Mission of Yahweh, Cy-Hope, Cypress Assistance Ministries, Magnificat House and the Glory Ranch. Our goal is to continue assisting our community and making a personal difference. Please remember to come join us in August, as we are all looking forward to a SPA like experience to help us prepare for our very special marketplace event “Shop Til You Drop” on September 8th. Mark your calendars. You don’t want to miss this event! CWC is a service organization that gives back to the community, so all funds raised will go right back to the community in scholarships for graduating high school seniors, at Lone Star College, Cy-Fair and grants to other non-profits in our community as well. Membership for the Cy-Fair Women’s Club is open to all ladies in Northwest Houston/Cypress neighborhoods. Currently we meet the first Thursday of most months at West Houston Church of Christ. Our meetings begin with social time and refreshments at 7:00 PM immediately followed by a program at 7:30 PM. The church is located at the corner of Queenston and West Road. Our monthly meetings are not only educational and enjoyable, but they develop lasting fellowships. We look forward to meeting you there! Please contact Susan McLeroy, Membership Chair at sudomac@ comcast.net if you have any questions about our club or need directions to the church.

SALES TAX HOLIDAY AUGUST 17 - 19, 2012 In 2012, Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on August 17th, 18th and 19th - the state’s annual tax holiday. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Go to www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/tx98_490/tx98_490. html for details on included items and restrictions.

Texas Representative Duane Bohac honored four Eagle Scouts at their court of honor: from left: Ryan Patrick Andrew Juergens, Rep. Bohac, Bishop Ron Barrow (leader of the church sponsoring Troop 996), Larry Heki and Quinn Taylor.

BOY SCOUT TROOP 996 Four Scouts Honored with Eagle Rank

Four Eagle Scouts held a combined court of honor celebrating their attainment of Boy Scouts of America’s highest rank. The four young men, all of troop 996, sponsored by the Copperfield Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, are Andrew Juergens, Larry Heki, Quinn Taylor and Ryan Patrick. Only about five percent of Boy Scouts persevere to reach the rank of Eagle, so having four from one troop at the same time is outstanding. Each Eagle Scout has completed at least 21 merit badges and has served in a series of leadership roles and he must complete a selfdirected major project. The accomplishment says much about the character of the young man, but also much about his scout leaders and parents, who have encouraged him over many years. During the June 27th court of honor ceremony, Texas Rep. Duane Bohac honored the Eagles as guest speaker. Andrew Juergens is the son of Kurt and Gretchen Juergens. He is about to start his senior year at Langham Creek High School. His Eagle project was to collect used baseball and softball equipment, donated to RBI (Recycled Baseball Items). The baseball equipment will be used for inner city baseball teams and the softball equipment will be sent to troops overseas. Larry Heki is the son of Scott and Charlotte Heki. He graduated from Langham Creek High School in 2010. Larry actually completed his Eagle requirements last summer, but left for a year of study at Brigham Young University before there was time to celebrate with a court of honor. His Eagle project was done for the Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District’s Nature Trails facility. It was a conservation project in which he led and participated in the removal of an invasive species of water plant, the parrotfeather, a noxious weed that is a native water plant of the Amazon River in South America. He also built two new floating platforms to place in the pond for the turtles, ducks and other wildlife to use to sun themselves or to rest on. Larry has been studying chemistry and leaves in late August to serve as a missionary for two years in Finland. Quinn Taylor is the son of Tim and Janet Taylor and the third in the family to earn the rank of Eagle. His project was completed for Houston Marine Moms. He organized the collection and sorting of donations used for care packages sent to Marines serving in Afghanistan. Quinn is a well-known basketball player for Langham Creek High School. He will be attending Utah State University on a basketball scholarship this fall, studying civil engineering. After his freshman year he plans to serve as a missionary for two years before returning to sports and school. Ryan Patrick is also a basketball player. It was through his basketball friendship with Quinn Taylor, starting in third grade, that Ryan learned of scouting and got involved in Troop 996. He is the son of Rich and Jeannie Patrick. His project was to make large animal

feeders for Boys and Girls Country. Many of the students at Boys and Girls Country participate in FFA (Future Farmers of America) competitions with the hope of earning college scholarships. Ryan’s project was to help them in their efforts. Ryan will be attending Texas A&M University this fall, in the Mays School of Business.

HOMESCHOOL PACK 164 Cub Scouts is a fun way to teach boys about character, respect, responsibility and many other traits. Pack 164 is a Christian, home school Cub Scout Pack that services the Greater West Houston/Katy area. Pack 164 promotes service to God, to country and to others. If you are interested and your son is entering 1st through 5th grade, please contact “Van” VanZant at van.vanzant@gmail.com or at 281-8518374. We will also have an informational meeting and registration Thursday, August 16th at 7 PM at the Bear Creek Community Center.

Boy Scout Troop 61 Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to visit Boy Scout Troop 61 at 7:00 PM Wednesday nights at Peace Community Church, 5151 Addicks Satsuma Road, Houston, Texas, 77084. They will get a hands-on experience of what Scouting has to offer and have the opportunity to visit with the Scouts and their adult leaders to learn more about the things the troop has done during meetings and activities. Scouting activities include camping, fishing, archery, rifle/shotgun shooting, hiking, first aid, wilderness survival, community service, citizenship, swimming, leadership, white-water rafting and much more. Troop 61 camps each month and has a group that goes to High Adventure Camp and to Merit Badge Camps each summer. Boy Scout Troop 61 meets from 7:00 to 8:00 PM every Wednesday in the Activity Room at Peace Community Church. Contact Mike Viator with Troop 61 if your son is interested in joining a local Boy Scout Troop. Cell: 713-409-1934, mike.viator@comcast.net.

281-788-2047 and will stay a few weeks longer for language training - although most of the Finnish language will come once he’s in the country speaking it full time. All three graduated from Langham Creek High School in 2011. All three played in the marching band there: Eric played trombone, Aaron played tuba and Larry played French horn. All three are Eagle Scouts, earning the BSA’s highest rank. Eric’s Eagle project was to build raised flower beds for Copperfield Estates independent senior living center. Aaron’s project was to put up a world map on the side of the building at Horne Elementary. Larry, who held his Eagle court of honor on July 4th, built two turtle platforms and reclaimed a lake at the Cy-Fair ISD Nature Trails. The boys are sons of Scott and Charlotte Heki. The parents are justifiably proud of these three sons and feel it a rare privilege to be sending all three off to serve at the same time. The Heki family has lived in the Copperfield area for about 15 years and attend church in the Copperfield Ward of the Katy Stake of the LDS Church, on Longenbaugh at Park Falls.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through August. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Go to www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/ taxpubs/tx98_490/tx98_490.html for details on included items and restrictions.
