Community Garage Sale The fall community garage sale is tentatively scheduled for October 6th - the first Saturday in October; this date will be moved to Sunday, October 7th if it rains on Saturday. The community will be open to the public for homeowner garage sales from 7:00 am - 3:00 pm. The sale will be advertised in local papers. If you wish to have a garage sale, please email CG_GarageSale@yahoo.com or call Lisa Donaldson at 281-579-7227 to register (not the onsite office). If emailing, please give your address and the types of items you plan on selling (i.e. toys, children’s clothing, furniture, kitchen equipment, etc.). Registration gives your sale a listing on the maps distributed to those entering the community for garage sales. Please note that the two community sponsored garage sales are the ONLY garage sales allowed in the community. To be included on the listing, you must be registered by the Wednesday prior to the garage sale (time is needed to have copies/maps made, etc.).

Back to School By the time this article is published, school will just about be back in session. The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Department and KISD Police will be watching school zones, as well as areas with increased traffic to assure safe and compliant vehicle operation. Please remember that it is ILLEGAL to pass a stopped school bus that is loading/unloading children. Residents should remember to not only comply with the reduced speeds but should also be alert for young pedestrians and “pick-up / drop-off” traffic patterns. Households with young drivers should have the annual “reminder” talk about appropriate speeds in the subdivision and near schools. It also can be beneficial to remind expected guests of the presence of the school zones, as well as bicycle lanes.

Deed Restrictions After recent Deed Restriction Inspections performed in the community, we have way too many violations regarding homeowners not watering, mowing, weeding and maintaining their yards. This should not be happening as basic homeownership means one has a yard and it MUST be maintained. Of course, if you live in a high-rise condo or a town home that may not be the case but we do not have those kinds of properties in Canyon Gate. Yes, it’s hot outside and everyone has busy lives but PLEASE maintain your yard or hire someone to do

it for you. The last thing the Board wants to do is have an outside source mow the yard at a considerable cost to the homeowner who just does not get around to doing it. It is not possible during summer months to get by without mowing a yard at least once every ten days or so. To the 95% of you who do an excellent job of maintaining your yard, we thank you and your neighbors thank you! There are still many homes in the community with trees that need to be trimmed, as pedestrians cannot walk on the sidewalk. Likewise, there are many trees that hang over the road and scrape vehicles that drive under them. Please take a look at your trees and walk the sidewalk and trim if necessary. If you receive a letter and do not take care of the violation within the specified time period, the HOA has the right to go onto the property to remedy the violation and bring the property into compliance. If this is done, the costs for trimming tree limbs will be added to the homeowner’s account, so please make every effort to trim your trees. We have a lot of pet owners in the community who walk their dogs regularly. Please be sure to pick up after your pet if you walk it! The HOA has placed stations with bags in various locations to aid with this. Your neighbors will thank you and the HOA thanks you for being a responsible pet owner.

STREET LIGHT MAINTENANCE To report a streetlight that is not working, call CenterPoint Energy at 713-207-2222. You will need to report both the number on the base of the pole (six digits) and the street address. You may also report outages online at www.centerpointenergy.com/outage.

WILDLIFE Homeowners need to be aware that Texas is home to many snakes, including venomous and non-venomous varieties. With the natural areas surrounding the community, Canyon Gate is especially prone to snakes, especially the park in the back of the community. Please be vigilant when in grassy areas that snakes may hide. If you should see a snake, please do not approach it - they will not normally attack or bite unless provoked. We have also received reports of alligators in the bayous nearby. Please use caution when walking the bayous - and be sure your dogs are careful as well.

RECREATION CENTER RENTAL The recreation center has a room available for parties, meeting, reunions, etc. A signed contract plus a $300 security deposit will hold your reservation. Homeowners must be current on their dues (or payment plans) and rental fees must be received prior to the party. The rental rate is $35 an hour with a two-hour minimum. The key for the clubhouse is to be signed out and returned to the guards in the guardhouse. Please READ THE CONTRACT CAREFULLY before signing - this is a binding legal document and the rules and regulations stipulated in the contract will be enforced. HARRIS COUNTY TOLL TAGS Please call the onsite office (281-492-6020) or email us to register your Harris County toll tag (phardilek@ccbpropertymanagement. com). The following information is required: Name, Address, Vehicle Make & Model and Old and New EZ Tag Numbers. Please do not give tag information to the guards - they do not have access to the gate computer. PLEASE REMEMBER to have your old tag number available when you are registering a new tag, so we can remove it from the system. The sticker-type EZ tags can be programmed into the system. However, the signal is not as powerful as that of the battery-powered tags. Please approach the gate slowly and stay as close to the left median as possible (that is where the reader is located); the new tags can’t be read by the system until you are very close to the gate.

REMINDER ABOUT PARKING REGULATIONS The Association would like to remind everyone that there is NO CURBSIDE PARKING between the hours of 11:00 PM - 9:00 AM. VEHICLES IN VIOLATION WILL BE STICKERED. If vehicles are found repeatedly in violation, they will be towed at the owner’s expense. These parking regulations were put in to place to alleviate the difficulty school buses were having navigating the neighborhood and to allow a time for problem-free residential access for emergency vehicles. Safety issues relating to morning work traffic and children going to school, garbage trucks, bike lanes and homeowner complaints about blocked driveways were also concerns.

FITNESS CENTER/RECREATION CENTER LOBBY

Anyone under the age of 18 is not allowed in the fitness center unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. The recreation center lobby is not to be used as a gathering place for kids to socialize. The Association is asking for all homeowners who use these facilities to help with watching over these areas. If a child is under the age of 18 and is in the fitness center without a parent or guardian or appears to be simply loitering in the lobby, please politely ask them to leave. Thank you.

EZ TAGS FOR FRONT GATE ACCESS

The Homeowners’ Association sells EZ tags that will open the resident gate at the Canyon Gate entrance. Residents may purchase these at the onsite office for $35. These EZ tags contain a battery that should last for, approximately, 3 years. The HOA offers a oneyear warranty on these tags. If the battery goes bad and your EZ tag stops working within the first year, the tag will be replaced at no cost. If your EZ tag stops working after the one-year time limit, a new EZ tag will need to be purchased.

Please respect your neighbors’ yards and their personal space ….. remember that pets must be confined to a fenced backyard or within the house and must not allowed to bark all night long or cause a nuisance to neighbors. They must be on a leash at all times when away from this contained environment. The Nutrition and Food Service Department encourages parents in all eligible households to complete an online application prior to the start of school. Visit the district website (www.katyisd.org) for the online application. A Free and Reduced meal application form and an information letter will also be distributed in the student’s first day packet. A paper application will not need to be completed if you submitted the 2012 - 2013 application online. If your child was on the program at the end of the previous school year, they are eligible for the same benefit for the first 30 operating days of the new school year or until a new application is processed. Selected for the first time to participate in this showcase event, CRyptonite climbed the individual team rankings in the qualifying rounds to the number two spot out of 70 top high school robotics teams from across the US and Canada. In one of those qualifying rounds their alliance scored 136 points, a world record for this year’s “Rebound Rumble” game.

RUOK Program

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. FUNDRAISERS Pregnancy Help Center of West Houston FundRaising Event - Baby Bottle Blessings Pregnancy Help Center of West Houston is excited to announce that 27 local churches participated in this year’s Baby Bottle Blessings event. The event ran from Mother’s Day thru Father’s Day. Local residents picked up 2,864 Baby Bottles at their home church and filled the bottles with change, bills and checks during the month long event. This event spotlights the extensive resources that Pregnancy Help Center provides to residents of 3 counties who are faced with circumstances surrounding a present, potential or former pregnancy. Pregnancy Test, Peer Counseling, classes for Moms and Dads, as well as, limited ultrasound and help with maternity clothing and baby items are just some of the services that the Center provides to their clients. SUNSHINE KIDS FALL FEST AT THE RIVER

The Sunshine Kids are a non-profit organization dedicated to children with cancer. The children have the opportunity to go on vacations with other childhood cancer patients. It gives them the opportunity to share with others in their same situation and gives them a break in their treatment. The Gary Greene Champions office has an annual fundraiser in the northwest part of Houston. This year, it will be at the Red River Saloon on 249 (23238) just north of Spring Cypress on Wednesday, October 3rd from 5-9 PM, with food served at 7 PM. The location, as well as the Bar-B-Q dinner, is generously donated so 100 percent of the proceeds can go to the Kids. There will be a silent auction, food, music and fun. GO 5K A Different Way and The Outdoor Market, organized by the CrossPoint’s Community Impact Team, will be held at CrossPoint Westgreen, located at 700 S. Westgreen Blvd, Katy TX 77450 on November 17, 2012. CrossPoint Westgreen will utilize their property, as well as the adjacent Mason Creek running trails and Rick Rice Park to make up the 3.1 mile route for the race. The route will also include a series of obstacles & “outreach” tasks, which include gathering care package items and stowing them in a cinched bag that each of the 500 participants will carry throughout the journey. The completed care package bags will be delivered to persons in need throughout the community as part of the CrossPoint Community Impact “Project Feed the Need.” Participant registration begins Sept. 9th continuing thru a firm deadline of Oct. 28th. Following the race is The Outdoor Market, a second annual event that features vendors, craftsmen, household items, children’s activities and concessions. HFAC Performers Strike Gold at National Competition HFAC Actors Academy Performance Team won two Elite Gold and five Gold medals at the Starbound National Competition in San Antonio. The Houston Family Arts Center’s Performance Team competed at the Starbound National Talent Competition in San Antonio July 5-7, 2012. Held at the Hyatt Regency on the River Walk, Starbound is the largest dance competition in America. The HFAC Actors Academy Performance Team and individual performers won two Elite Gold Awards and five Gold Awards in four different categories. The team choreographer is Ellen Dyer. The Actors Academy Performance Team won a Gold Award in the tap category with its performance of “Walk This Way” and a Gold Award in the musical theatre category with its performance of “Showstopper’s Medley.” Taylor Hall’s solo “Freak on a Leash” and Hope Harris and Jean Furter’s duet “Shake It Out” won Gold Awards in the contemporary category. Jessie Brownie and Jacob Major’s duet “Sing, Sing, Sing” won an Elite Gold Award in the jazz category and 5th place in the National Seniors Category. DECIBELLES (A Barbershop Chorus)

We are a ladies daytime chorus with approximately 30 members. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 30 years. We sing old favorites and contemporary tunes arranged in the barbershop style. The four parts creating the barbershop sound are Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass. We rehearse Friday mornings from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center located at 2501 Westerland, off Westheimer and Gessner. Kimberly Akimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, November 29-December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding.

On May 11, 1894, workers of the Pullman Palace Car Company in Chicago struck to protest wage cuts and the firing of union representatives. They sought support from their union led by Eugene V. Debs and on June 26th the American Railroad Union called a boycott of all Pullman railway cars. Within days, 50,000 rail workers complied and railroad traffic out of Chicago came to a halt. On July 4th, President Grover Cleveland dispatched troops to Chicago. Much rioting and bloodshed ensued, but the government’s actions broke the strike and the boycott soon collapsed. Debs and three other union officials were jailed for disobeying the injunction. The strike brought worker’s rights to the public eye and Congress declared, in 1894, that the first Monday in September would be the holiday for workers, known as Labor Day.

With the long hours and terrible working conditions, American unions became more prominent and voiced their demands for a better way of life. On Tuesday, September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers marched from city hall to Union Square in New York City, holding the first-ever Labor Day parade. Participants took an unpaid day-off to honor the workers of America, as well as vocalize issues they had with employers. As years passed, more states began to hold these parades, but Congress would not legalize the holiday until 12 years later.

Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

VFW Voice of Democracy A National ESSAY Competition The Voice of Democracy essay is a National Competition created in 1947 to allow high school students in grades 9-12 to voice their opinion on their responsibility to our nation. The theme for 2012 is: “Is Our Constitution Still Relevant?” Students from public, private and parochial high schools and home schooled students, in the U.S. and in American high schools overseas may enter. Katy VFW remembers: Korea - 59 th anniversary The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9182 remembered the 59th Anniversary of the Signing of the Korean War Armistice Agreement - Cease Fire - on Friday, July 27th, at the VFW Veterans Memorial Museum. The newly renovated museum is located at 6206 George Bush Drive, Katy, Texas. The post hosted a presentation, which was led by several veterans who severed during the Korean War. These veterans briefly shared highlights of their experiences and memories of the war fought on the Korean Peninsula. The post also had one of its members share what it is like today at the Panmunjom, where the agreement was signed 59 years ago on July 27, 1953.
