Become a Tutor-Understand our Student’s Lifelines
Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”
Recycle at the Ft. Bend County Recycling Center!
The Ft. Bend County Recycling center is located nearby in Rosenberg (just 10 miles away) and accepts glass/bottles and Styrofoam that Waste Management doesn’t pick up. Visit the Ft. Bend Co. government website for information: www.co.fort-bend.tx.us. Some recycling facts: • It takes about 1-2 million years for glass to decompose. • It takes 1+ million years for Styrofoam to decompose. For more facts on decomposition time, visit http://behealthyandrelax.com/2007/11/how-longdoes-it-take-to-decompose.
GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER
Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum

height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

LAMAR CISD TRUSTEES NAME 4 SCHOOLS
At its regular June meeting, the Lamar CISD Board of Trustees named the District’s next four campuses. Voters approved funding for two elementary schools, a middle school, a junior high and a high school in the November, 2011 Bond Election. Judge James “Jim” Adolphus Elementary is under construction in the Long Meadow Farms subdivision. Judge Adolphus served as a Missouri City Councilman, a Fort Bend County Justice of the Peace and as Fort Bend County Judge from 1998 to 2002. For 17 years, Adolphus was deputy chief of the Mercy Corps, a free rescue, ambulance and first-aid service, staffed by volunteers. As a Missouri City Councilman he was instrumental in forming the Fort Bend Economic Development Council. Adolphus Elementary is scheduled to open for the 2013-2014 school year. John Arredondo Elementary will be located near the Summer Lakes subdivision. Arredondo served as the first Hispanic member of the Rosenberg City Council and the overpass on FM 723 that rises over the train tracks is named in his honor. He was instrumental in getting the overpass built. Arredondo owned several businesses in Rosenberg and helped get the Fort Bend Technical Center built in Richmond. Arredondo Elementary is scheduled to be open for the 2014-2015 school year.

Lamar CISD’s fifth secondary complex will be built in the Fulshear area and will eventually include a high school, junior high and middle school. Leaman Junior High and Fulshear High School are projected to be open for the 20162017 school year. Dean Leaman Junior High School is named for a civic leader in Richmond and Rosenberg and the owner of Allied Concrete. Leaman served as president of the Rosenberg-Richmond Chamber of Commerce, was a founding member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, served as president of the National Lumber Dealers Association and served on the boards of Polly Ryon/Oak Bend Hospital and the George Foundation. He worked tirelessly in bringing Wharton County Junior College and the Texas State Technical Institute to the area. Churchill Fulshear Jr. High School will also be located near the city that is his families’ namesake. Born in Tennessee, Fulshear moved to Texas with his family in 1824. He served as a scout in the War for Texas Independence. He operated a racetrack called Churchill Downs on the family plantation, which was near the present day Fulshear. Voters approved funding for a middle school adjacent to George Ranch High School and Reading Junior High. It was named in honor of Polly Ryon at the same time as the high school and the junior high.

Congregation Or Ami - Great Comedy Night - Ross Bennett
Free estimate or 2 opinion
As comedian Allan Sherman once said, “you don’t have to be Jewish”…… to perform comedy at Congregation Or Ami, West Houston’s only conservative Synagogue, but you do have to be funny. On Saturday, October 13th, nationally renowned comedian Ross Bennett, will perform his unique brand of very funny stand-up comedy at the Synagogue, in an authentic comedy club setting, at 8:30 PM. Bennett, a one time West Point Cadet who left the Academy to become a Comedian (“probably the greatest service I will ever do for my country”), has been performing comedy for over 30 years. Over the years, Ross Bennett has appeared at the Friar’s Club and on many TV programs including “Evening at the Improv.” Bennett also co-wrote and stars in the very funny play, PASTRAMI ON RYE WITH MAYO, about the last 4 comedians performing in the Catskills. The October 13th performance is open to the entire West Houston / Katy community. Please purchase your tickets early, as seating is limited. Congregation Or Ami is located at 3443 Wilcrest Drive Houston, TX 77042. Tickets, which are $36 each, include a wonderful selection of desserts, wine, soda and coffee. GET THE SMARTEST CARD OF ALL AT FORT BEND COUNTY LIBRARIES
The best investment any parent can make is a library card. It’s free. It opens doors to benefits that kids can’t break, wear out or outgrow. September is Library Card Sign-up Month and Fort Bend County Libraries wants to make sure that your child is among the two-thirds of Americans that carry the smartest card of all – a library card. A library card provides free access to videos, DVDs, CDs, software and books. Libraries also offer a wide range of other items to lend to children and their families, including toys, games and puzzles. Most importantly - librarians are on hand to help recommend materials suitable for various ages and interests. A library card becomes even more valuable when someone wants to access many of the library’s online databases from home. The cost of subscribing to these databases as an individual would make them unaffordable to many people, but a library card levels the playing field by making them available to everyone free - as long as you have a library card. Since a library card is free, how can parents afford not to give their children such a valuable tool? • CINCO RANCH NIGHT READERS’ TO DISCUSS ‘THE COFFEE TRADER’ - The Night Readers’ book club will meet on Thursday, September 20th beginning at 7:00 PM, in Conference Room 2. Are you curious about their military service or medical history? The program is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, however and reservations are required. • CELEBRATE CONSTITUTION DAY WITH EXHIBIT - In celebration of Constitution Day on September 17th, the library will display a special exhibit featuring an assortment of items depicting the history of the U.S. Constitution. The collection will be on display beginning September 1st and will continue throughout the month at the library. The exhibit is free and may be viewed during regular library hours. • INTRODUCTORY COMPUTER CLASSES - The Adult Services staff will present free, introductory computer classes this month. The classes will consist of a hands-on introduction to basic skills for people who would like to learn more about using these computer programs. “The Basics of Buying and Selling on eBay” class will take place on Wednesday, September 5th, beginning at 10:00 AM, in the Computer Lab. Volunteers Needed IN KATY We Believe In The Power Of Second Chances
CROSSROADS mentors are regular people, just like you, who prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering positive mentoring relationships. The goal is crime prevention! Our mentors must be 21 years of age and volunteer a minimum of 1 hour a week. There are many sites, areas and available times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned child. We desperately need loving and caring mentors for boys and girls that do not have anyone visiting them! Please consider devoting just one hour a week to the future of a needy child, many times you are their only visitors. Contact Jan Sadler Gibbs at jan.gibbs@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779.
Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Houston Children’s Charity
Join a group of people dedicated to improving the lives of children. If you are searching for a good cause to lend a hand to, you need look no further. Houston Children’s Charity is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for underprivileged, abused and disabled children who have been otherwise left behind. The scope of our support is limited only by the availability of resources. Our goal, the rainbow that we chase, is to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered. Do you have the time and desire to volunteer to help a great cause? We are always in need of volunteers to help throughout the year. This is a great way for school age kids to get in community service hours. Do you have gently used children’s clothing, shoes and jackets? At Houston Children’s Charity we are setting up the “HCC Closet.” All of the items donated will be given to children – not sold at a retail store. Please contact our office at 713-524-2878 or visit our website www.houstonchildrenscharity.org for more information on our organization.
STANDUP FOR KIDS
How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids, please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help, visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

PTSD SUPPORT GROUP DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW?
I feel like the horrific event is happening all over again. I have nightmares and flashbacks of the event. I stay away from crowded places that remind me of the event. I jump and feel very anxious when something happens without warning. I have a hard time trusting or feeling close to other people. I get mad very easily. I feel guilty because others have died and I lived. I have trouble sleeping and my muscles are tense. There are many characteristics that may be signs of Post-Traumatic Stress (PTSD). If you recognize some or all of these symptoms; you may want to seek help. YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Group meeting at Memorial Drive UMC, 13194 Memorial Drive. Call 713-468-8356 x119 for fates and times.
