Grand Lakes News It is so true: when one door closes, another opens. It takes a very patient person to hold to this inspiration. It always seems that when unhappy moments come, unhappiness pours and pours like an everlasting storm. It takes a very strong person to be with someone exhibiting many complexities. When bad times come, a person changes into one of two forms - better or worse. No one wants to be around someone who’s down all the time. In fact, we dread even asking them “how are you doing?” But just put on their shoes and walk a few steps. If the shoes pinch and make your feet ache, imagine how your downer friend feels walking in them. So what can you do to lift them and help them see that when one door closes another opens? Simply listen. That’s all. Email me: monica_vagholkar@yahoo.com

The Grand Lakes Swim Team The Grand Lakes Swim Team, West Houston Aquatic League’s Division I Champions, recently hosted a Swim-a-Thon with proceeds designated to benefit the Katy Wolf Pack. Katy Wolf Pack is a Special Olympics Texas Team, which offers softball, basketball, track and field, bocce ball, golf, bowling and aquatics for individuals with intellectual disabilities who live in Katy, Texas and surrounding areas. Grand Lakes Gators swimmers collected pledges and swam up to 100 laps each raising $1,500 to donate to their fellow Katy athletes to assist with the purchase of equipment and operating expenses. Wolf Pack athletes came to cheer on their Gator friends at the event and Gator’s top fundraisers and coaches presented the Wolf Pack with an awesome big check at the Gator End of Season Party. Great job Gators and Wolf Pack!

Labor Day Facts and Stats • 153.2 Million - number of Americans (over 16 years) in the labor force as of July 2011, that number is down 1.2 million from Labor Day 2010. • 12% of American workers belonged to a labor union in 2009. • 84.7% of full time workers have health insurance. • 2.2 Million more females than males are in management positions as of 2009. • Registered Nurse - occupation expected to add the most positions in the next 10 years. • 25 minutes - average time for the commute to work. • 5.9 Million people worked from home in 2009. • Why not wear white after Labor Day? According to historians, it may be symbolic for those wealthy enough to leave the city for a summer vacation in which the “uniform” of choice was breezy and white - no white after Labor Day because they have to go back to their drab work/city clothes.
10 Easy BBQ Tips That Work 1. Save money and time by selecting the best cut of meat you can afford. 2. Never reuse Marinades. 3. Soak wood chips before using to prolong smoke and life. 4. Never add lighter fluid directly to a flaming grill. 5. Using the right amount of heat to grill foods will save you time and money. 6. Thaw food properly before grilling. 7. Keeping food warm during transport is just as important as keeping warm when removed from the grill. 8. Knowing which woods to use for wood smoking will save you time and illness. Wood smoking involves three basic forms of wood smoke. Hot smoking, Smoke-roasting or Smoke-baking, Cold smoking. 9. Cleaning your grill before use can actually improve its performance and produce a better meal. 10. Using quality all natural barbecue sauce, dry rubs and marinades can not only improve the taste of the meal but increase the satisfaction of your guests.

Organizing Grand Lakes Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. Have you been trained as a CERT member? Leslie Power and Shelia Maneffa are interested in gathering names together of CERT trained individuals who live in Grand Lakes. please email Leslie at freetofly1234@gmail.com if you are a member and would like to be included in this Grand Lakes Team. TEEN CERT trained members are welcome as well. We hope to get to know other CERT in Grand Lakes and be better organized and prepared to help one another in a crisis situation when first responders may not be readily available.

CRIME WATCH UPDATE
HunterDouglas
Earlier this year, several homeowners in Grand Lakes were victims of home burglaries. The burglaries happened during the early evening hours, often while the homeowners were away at dinner. Generally, the intruders broke in through large windows in the rear of the houses, often at the master bedroom. We were fortunate that nobody was hurt, but valuables were taken in each incident and it could have been worse. Participate in Crime Watch and talk to the neighbors next to you, across the street and down the street. Introduce yourself; get to know them and who lives in the household. Encourage them to do the same and pledge to watch out for each other.

Enhanced lighting is a quick, inexpensive and effective way of making your home less attractive to criminals. Lights on photocells are a good option, as they come on whenever it gets dark. Some people prefer motion sensors, but whatever you choose, assess your home for the best options and be sure to avoid adding lights that will shine in your neighbor’s windows. If you decide to add exterior fixtures, you first need to submit an Architectural Review application. The form is on the website. In future issues, we will offer more tips to avoid being a crime victim. please send to mjmeagher@pcmi-us.com if you have a suggestion.

Don’t hesitate to report suspicious persons to the Sheriffs. Reports from citizens are the best sources of information for law enforcement. Contact grandlakescrimewatch@yahoo.com if you would like to be involved in more organized Community Watch efforts. Emergencies or crimes in progress should be immediately reported via “911.” Non-emergency calls should go to Fort bend County Dispatch at 281-341-4665. Keep your outside lights on after dark and consider a home alarm system if you don’t already have one. You might want to take extra precautions to protect the rear of the house and especially the bedroom suite.

Pet Poops/You Scoop
When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every Grand Lakes homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass!

It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard) must be on a leash. For the safety of all Grand Lakes residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in Grand Lakes, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

Grand Lakes Dog Park
Grand Lakes welcomes you and your four-legged friend to the community dog park. The park is located in the southeast corner of Grand Lakes: from south Fry Road go south on Rainwood Park Drive, left at Central Park (Grand Brooks Lane), left on Emily Park, left on Grandwood Lane, then right on Calico Crossing. The park and parking lot is on your right toward the end of the street.
5 steps to a happier healthier pet
Protect your pet from extreme weather (heat, cold, rain, etc). Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on a leash when walked. Make sure they’re up to date with vaccinations. Always make sure they’re wearing identification, so they can be returned to you if lost. 5. Spay or neuter your pet. N

• Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electric-shock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. • Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.

Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you!

“Unleash Our Hearts”
Bike Racks
The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is seeking partners across the country for donations in rebuilding their facility, which was destroyed by hurricane Katrina. The Katy community was overwhelmingly instrumental in supporting families that were displaced after Hurricane Katrina through the support of Katy ISD, local businesses, various community organizations and churches. We are, once again, given the opportunity to “unleash our hearts” and be a part of the rebuilding of Louisiana SPCA. The website www.la-spca.org provides information regarding the Come Stay Heal Capital Campaign. Donations can be made online or checks made payable to Louisiana SPCA Capital Campaign, 701 Thayer Street, New Orleans, LA 70114. For questions and comments, please contact: Laura Maloney, Chief Executive Officer Louisiana SPCA, 701 Thayer St., New Orleans, LA 70114, PH: 504-368-5191, ext. 200, laura@la-spca.org (email). Grand Lakes “Lakes”
Grace Howard Medals at Junior Olympics Championships
NOTE: Grand Lakes has a strict CATCH & RELEASE policy. Only “barb-less” hooks are allowed to prevent injuring fish that are caught and returned. Please use care when handling fish and gently return them to the water as quickly as possible. Trotlines or other non-standard fishcatching tools are forbidden. Common sense and proper care of the fish will ensure a long-lasting experience. The fish and the water “health” are monitored to ensure a thriving underwater environment.
Seven-year old Grace Howard of Katy, TX competed in the 46th USATF Junior Olympics Track & Field Championships in Baltimore, Maryland along with eight thousand other youth at the W.A.C. Hughes Stadium on the campus of Morgan State. The track meet was held July, 23rd-July 28th. Howard made it to the national competition after medaling in the qualifier and Regional track meets in the 200-meter Dash, 4 x 400 and 4 x 100 relay. Howard ended the season as one of the top 25 200-meter runners in her age group, nationally. Howard is a Grand Lakes resident and Alexander Elementary student.
USE OF ANY WATERCRAFT AND SWIMMING ARE PROHIBITED ON COMMUNITY LAKES
Howard is pictured with two medals for third place in the 4 x 400 relay and eighth in the 4 x 100 relay in the Sub-Bantam age group (ages eight and under). This includes kayaking, canoeing or any form of pleasure boating. The use of remote controlled water toys is okay. Remember, our lakes are for neighborhood beautification and approved shoreline fishing. Violation of these rules is strictly prohibited!

STREET LIGHTS If you happen to notice streetlights that may not be burning or the pole is leaning, you can contact CenterPoint Energy directly at their customer service department at 713-207-2222. The information you will need prior to contacting them, is the actual pole number; a six-digit number that is on a plate located on the pole itself and the address nearest to that particular pole.
Parks, Town Square and Common Areas in the Community
In the community of Grand Lakes, there are several common areas for the residents to enjoy. These common areas are restricted to residents for individual and family use and for community events. It is important that we do not abuse these areas with events other than the activities mentioned. The homeowners association maintains all of these areas so if there is any damage to these areas the community pays for it. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our community beautiful.

Near-Zero Interest Rates: Trade-Offs for Investors The Federal Reserve’s recent announcement that it will maintain the federal funds rate in a range between 0.00% and 0.25% through December 2014 has generated the usual analysis about whether Chairman Bernanke and his colleagues are doing the right thing. But the Federal Reserve’s policy may be less about right versus wrong than about the trade-offs for investors and consumers. When the Federal Reserve makes a determination about movements in interest rates, it bases its decision on prospects for economic growth and whether existing growth can be sustained. The Federal Reserve considers the outlook for inflation, the federal budget, consumer finances, corporate earnings and a variety of other factors. Maintaining interest rates at a historically low level, which has been the Federal Reserve’s policy since December 2008, is a tool for stimulating economic growth. The fallout from the Federal Reserve’s actions can be significant. The federal funds rate influences the prime rate, which in turn has a bearing on rates that lenders charge for consumer and corporate borrowing. When the prime rate is relatively low, lenders may offer lower rates for mortgages, credit cards and other forms of credit than they otherwise would. It is important to remember that consumer demand and a household’s creditworthiness are also significant factors in interest rates assessed by lenders. There are other plusses associated with low short-term rates. Borrowing costs are relatively low for corporations, which can impact earnings and escalate stock market returns. In addition, with banks offering marginal returns on savings products, investors have a strong incentive to add to equity allocations with the goal of earning higher returns. Just as low short-term interest rates bring certain benefits, there may be drawbacks for investors and also for the broader economy. When short-term rates eventually go up, the situation is likely to be a negative for bondholders because of the inverse relation between interest rates and bond prices. Historically, rising interest rates have caused the prices of existing bonds to decline because newly issued bonds carry higher rates, which push down the value of previously issued securities. Holding a bond until maturity, when an investor can recoup principal, can lessen interest rate risk. Low interest rates also are a potential negative for savers, in particular retirees who depend on savings products to finance living expenses. In addition, there remains the question of whether low short-term interest rates encourage certain investors to gravitate to assets that are relatively risky given the investor’s tolerance for volatility and time horizon. A recent blog post noted that flows into high-yield bond funds have exceeded those for ultra-short and U.S. government bond funds.

Economic policy frequently presents both plusses and minuses and low short-term interest rates are no exception. You may want to evaluate your exposure to interest rate risk and think about how you will cope with the situation when Federal Reserve policy changes.

2012-2013 CRITERIA FOR FREE AND REDUCED PRICE MEALS Katy Independent School District announced its policy for providing free and reduced price meals for children eligible under the federal income guidelines for the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program. Go to www.squaremeals.com to view a copy of the policy. Children living in households whose income are at or below the federally approved levels, based on household size, may be eligible for free or reduced price meals. Transfer students approved for the program from another school district may either complete a Katy ISD application or provide documentation of their eligibility status. Foster children who are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court may also be eligible for benefits regardless of the income of the household with whom they reside. The Nutrition and Food Service Department encourages parents in all eligible households to complete an online application prior to the start of school. Visit the district website (www.katyisd.org) for the online application. A Free and Reduced meal application form and an information letter will also be distributed in the student’s first day packet. A paper application will not need to be completed if you submitted the 2012 - 2013 application online. If your child was on the program at the end of the previous school year, they are eligible for the same benefit for the first 30 operating days of the new school year or until a new application is processed. A new application is required each school year. The Nutrition and Food Service Department is located at 5364 Franz Rd, Katy, TX 77493. Staff is available Monday - Friday, 8 AM 2:30 PM to assist parents in completing the application. Bring the names of all members of the households and their Gross Monthly Income. The best investment any parent can make is a library card. It’s free. It opens doors to benefits that kids can’t break, wear out or outgrow. September is Library Card Sign-up Month and Fort Bend County Libraries wants to make sure that your child is among the two-thirds of Americans that carry the smartest card of all – a library card. A library card provides free access to videos, DVDs, CDs, software and books. Libraries also offer a wide range of other items to lend to children and their families, including toys, games and puzzles. Most importantly - librarians are on hand to help recommend materials suitable for various ages and interests. A library card becomes even more valuable when someone wants to access many of the library’s online databases from home. The cost of subscribing to these databases as an individual would make them unaffordable to many people, but a library card levels the playing field by making them available to everyone free - as long as you have a library card. Since a library card is free, how can parents afford not to give their children such a valuable tool?

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.

Katy Rebels Girls Basketball Association The 8th Grade Katy Rebels-D’Addieco Team took 1st place in the June 30-July 1, 2012 Primetime tournament in Humble, TX. The team went 4-0 to win the tournament in convincing fashion. The zone defense continued to frustrate opponents and the extra effort to complete every hustle play led to opportunities that made the difference in the games. Their continued commitment to defense allowed them to control the pace of the games and deflate opponents early, resulting in large margins of victory against quality teams. Congratulations to Allison, LaShanda, Kim, Sydney, Natalia, Alyssa, Emily, Delaney, Tianna and Anna on another successful tournament!

Congregation Or Ami
Great Comedy Night Ross Bennett As comedian Allan Sherman once said, “you don’t have to be Jewish”…… to perform comedy at Congregation Or Ami, West Houston’s only conservative Synagogue, but you do have to be funny. On Saturday, October 13th, nationally renowned comedian Ross Bennett, will perform his unique brand of very funny stand-up comedy at the Synagogue, in an authentic comedy club setting, at 8:30 PM. Bennett, a one time West Point Cadet who left the Academy to become a Comedian (“probably the greatest service I will ever do for my country”), has been performing comedy for over 30 years. Over the years, Ross Bennett has appeared at the Friar’s Club and on many TV programs including “Evening at the Improv.” Bennett also co-wrote and stars in the very funny play, PASTRAMI ON RYE WITH MAYO, about the last 4 comedians performing in the Catskills.

DECIBELLES (A Barbershop Chorus)
We are a ladies daytime chorus with approximately 30 members. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 30 years. We sing old favorites and contemporary tunes arranged in the barbershop style. The four parts creating the barbershop sound are Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass. We rehearse Friday mornings from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center located at 2501 Westerland, off Westheimer and Gessner. We love to have visitors and even more when you decide to join our chorus. For additional information, please call Pat at 281497-4904 or decibelle@comcast.net (email). We perform two types of shows each year. Currently we are singing a selection of patriotic songs, Johnny Mathis’ “Chances Are,” Perry Como’s “Hot Diggity Dog” and other fun tunes. You’ll be singing along with us before you know it. Our Christmas show includes old favorites, but also includes new fun tunes with props, narratives and choreography. We’ll begin preparing that program in October and book performances for the first two weeks in December. Come visit any Friday and see how much fun you can have with us.

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER
Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s.

VFW Voice of Democracy A National ESSAY Competition The Voice of Democracy essay is a National Competition created in 1947 to allow high school students in grades 9-12 to voice their opinion on their responsibility to our nation. The theme for 2012 is: “Is Our Constitution Still Relevant?” Students from public, private and parochial high schools and home schooled students, in the U.S. and in American high schools overseas may enter. The oral presentation must be not less than 3 minutes and no more than 5 minutes in length, spoken in English and recorded on the media specified on the application form, with no background noise or enhancements. The essay cannot contain the student’s name, city, state, grade level or refer to their nationality. Entries must be received no later than midnight Nov. 1, 2012. Deliver to VFW #8905, 21902 Hempstead Hwy., Cypress, TX, 77429 (next to Carl’s BBQ) or mail to: VFW #8905, POB 2, Cypress, TX, 77410-0002. The winning VFW Post #8905 entry will then compete for the VFW District 4 Scholarship and that winner competes for the VFW Department of Texas Scholarship. The State winner receives an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. in March of 2013 to compete for a $40,000 VFW National scholarship that is paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school.
Patriot’s Pen Conducted Nationwide, this VFW sponsored youth essay competition gives 6th, 7th and 8th graders an opportunity to write 300-400 word essays expressing their views on democracy with the prospect of awards for future educational endeavors. We invite you to join the more than 120,000 students who participated last year in this contest. You may access specific instructions by going to the VFW Website: VFW.ORG, choosing programs, then scholarships, then Patriot’s Pen.
