Grayson Lakes Independence Day Celebration July 4, 2012

Once again Grayson Lakes had a wonderful and inspirational Independence Day Celebration. The festivities started with the annual parade of walkers, strollers, bicycles and golf carts. The parade was led by Grand Marshall Evelyn Woodruff who rode in a red and white Mini-Cooper. After the parade all the residents in attendance assembled at the Club House for a patriotic program. The colors were raised by Boy Scout Troop 230 after which Michael Schwin sang the national anthem. Marty Levine delivered an inspirational speech about this great country of ours. Following the program, everyone was treated to cookies and frozen fruit punch slushy’s. Children’s activities included a water balloon toss and a coloring contest. All in attendance received Chick-fil-A meal coupons. Lake Pro, CJ’s Landscaping and Diversified Carpet Services provided major prizes for the winners in each classification in the parade.

Metal Tree Stakes Are the supporting wires that initially held your tree in place slack or non-existent? Has your tree started to grow over the support wire and in danger of being killed? If either of these is true, it’s time to remove the metal tree stakes from your yard. This can be a chore. Your Board has heard that Grayson Lakes resident Lanny Hitchcock has equipment to pull these stakes and will do the work for free as long as he can keep the stakes. He can be contacted at LKHitch@yahoo.com

Low Hanging Limbs Community walkers and runners are having trouble with low hanging limbs over sidewalks in Grayson Lakes. Please take the time to check your trees and make sure they are trimmed to allow at least 6 feet of clearance. Advice about trimming trees, from the Texas Master Gardener Handbook, is paraphrased below. Your board recognizes that many of our common area trees are also in need of trimming and approved funds, at the July Board meeting, for trimming trees along common area sidewalks. The Budget Committee will include a plan for periodic tree trimming in the future. “According to Dr. Alex Shigo, former USDA Forest Service plant pathologist, thick and heavy branches should be removed flush to the collar at the base of the branch, not flush with the trunk (Figure 6). The collar is an area of tissue containing a chemically protective zone. When a dead branch decays naturally, the decay advances downward until an area of very strong wood - or the internal protected zone - meets an area of very weak wood. At this point, the branch falls away, leaving a small zone of decayed wood within the collar. The decay is walled off in the collar. This is the natural shedding process. When the collar is removed, the protective zone

When cutting branches more than 1 1/2 inches in diameter, use a three-part cut. 1. The first step is to saw an undercut from the bottom of the branch about 6 to 12 inches out of the trunk and about one third of the way through the branch. 2. Make a second cut from the top, about 3 inches further from the undercut, until the branch falls away. 3. The resulting stub can then be cut back to the collar of the branch.”

Board Candidates Needed - Second Call When the Grayson Lakes community was created by the developer, The Grayson Lakes Community Improvements Association was established to manage and maintain common area property and to interpret and enforce the deed restrictions contained in our governing documents. A 5 member Board is responsible for management of the Association. In December of each year, an election is held to fill expiring terms. Three positions will need to be filled this coming December. Grayson Lakes property owners and/or residents are encouraged to run for the Board and exercise their knowledge and judgment in the operation of our community. The Grayson Lakes CIA Board meets the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 PM in the Recreation Center. Deliberations include finances, community activities, newsletter content, vendor performance and overall maintenance. A form has been provided elsewhere in this newsletter for those who would like to announce their intention to run for the Board. Please consider stepping up to serve your community. Due to the low turnout at our Meet the Candidates events, your Board has decided to discontinue the practice. Instead, candidates are encouraged to include a photo with their nomination form. Forms, with or without photos, will be posted on our website and published in newsletters as timing permits. In an attempt to create a virtual forum, residents are encouraged to submit questions for candidates to trey@communitysound.com (Trey Devillier). These will be relayed to candidates and their answers will be posted on our website www.graysonlakesliving.com and published in newsletters.

Crosswalk Laws With the placement of the Traffic Signals at the main entrance to our community and the removal of crossing guards during school zone times, a little refresher on Crosswalk and Pedestrian Laws couldn’t hurt. This is particularly important since one of the children from our community was struck by a vehicle while in the crosswalk, so please take the time to read below. According to Texas law 5522, no vehicle can enter or pass through a crosswalk while a pedestrian is anywhere in the crosswalk and the crosswalk signal is not a solid red hand or “do not walk;” the vehicle must yield the right of way to the pedestrian(s). You may only drive through the crosswalk once all pedestrians have completely exited the crosswalk. This includes larger streets with a median, such as Katy-Flewellen and is regardless of the direction of travel by the pedestrian. The intersection at the entrance to our community has the new style of crosswalk signals, which includes a count down. During this count down the pedestrian still has the right of way. Only a solid red hand denotes that the pedestrian no longer has the right of way. It is also against the law to enter an intersection without ensuring that you can completely exit the intersection before the signal changes to red. Vehicles waiting to pass through a crosswalk containing a pedestrian should wait outside of the intersection until all pedestrians have cleared the crosswalk.

Pedestrians should also take steps to ensure their safety when crossing intersections. Pedestrians should dismount anything they are riding before entering the intersection such as bicycles and skateboards. They should also meet the eyes of the surrounding drivers to ensure that the drivers are aware of them. Pedestrians should not stop in the crosswalk, but should keep moving in the same direction as the same pace until they have completely exited the crosswalk. Please help keep our community, especially our children, safe by knowing, understanding and following the laws as described above.

Friendly Reminder about Trash Containers

281-391-1595

Often drivers will look to their left when making a right turn for oncoming traffic, especially out of our community and will not notice a pedestrian entering the crosswalk on their right. Please ensure that you always look in both directions before entering an intersection, especially to look for pedestrians.

According to the Grayson Lakes restriction 4.10 Trash Containers: Trash containers and/or recycling bins must be stored in one of the following locations: • Inside your garage • Behind your home so that the house blocks the trash container from view from the street • Along the side of your home, provided they are set back at least 10’ (feet) from the front façade of the home and reasonably screened from public view In addition to the above requirements, additional screening is encouraged to further screen trash containers from view by neighbors.

Tennis Court Etiquette Recent repairs have been completed at our tennis courts. Repairs were necessary due to normal wear and tear and improper use. The following are a couple precautions that should prolong the use of the tennis courts and keep repair costs down: • No skateboarding or rollerblading in the courts • Please refrain from repeatedly pushing into the fences (i.e., kicking soccer balls or batting baseballs into the fence).

Volunteers Needed!

• If there is a ‘crime in progress’ or you feel that there is imminent danger to life or property, call ‘911.’ • If you observe ‘suspicious’ or ‘out of ordinary’ people, activity or vehicles, call 281-341-4665. Both calls will roll directly to the FBS dispatch, but will be routed based on the information given. Suggestions from the FBS dispatch officers regarding suspicious people are to get a physical description including race (white, black, Hispanic, etc.), height, weight, hair color, clothing etc. For suspicious vehicles, try to get a License Plate # and color, make and model, if possible and direction the vehicle is going. Keeping a pad of paper and pen in your own vehicle will make it easier to obtain the needed information. Please have the FBS # 281-341-4665 posted near your home phone, programmed into your cell phone and if you have children at home, make sure they know where to find the number and also put it in their cell phones if they have one. Never open your door to anyone that you don’t know or looks suspicious and make sure children know this as well. Neighborhood Security information as well as detailed information in reference to our Neighborhood Watch Program are available on our website, www.graysonlakesliving.com The Neighborhood Watch document contains ways to keep yourself and your property safe and ways to help facilitate local law enforcement to reduce crime in our community. Be aware of your surroundings and keep your eyes and ears open! Please sign up to receive Email alerts and forward this to any neighbor you know that may not be getting urgent information.

GET THE SMARTEST CARD OF ALL AT FORT BEND COUNTY LIBRARIES The best investment any parent can make is a library card. It’s free. It opens doors to benefits that kids can’t break, wear out or outgrow. September is Library Card Sign-up Month and Fort Bend County Libraries wants to make sure that your child is among the two-thirds of Americans that carry the smartest card of all – a library card. A library card provides free access to videos, DVDs, CDs, software and books. Libraries also offer a wide range of other items to lend to children and their families, including toys, games and puzzles. Most importantly - librarians are on hand to help recommend materials suitable for various ages and interests. A library card becomes even more valuable when someone wants to access many of the library’s online databases from home. The cost of subscribing to these databases as an individual would make them unaffordable to many people, but a library card levels the playing field by making them available to everyone free - as long as you have a library card. Fort Bend House of Hope - Bringing Healing and Restoration to Hurting Teens and Their Families House of Hope Fort Bend is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with National House of Hope. We are a Christcentered non-residential program working with troubled teens and their parents. Our six month program is set up to provide weekly counseling for the teens and parents. Our goal is to be a catalyst in healing and restoration in broken families. We use a modest sliding scale and books are an additional fee. We also present F.A.M.I.L.Y. Rules Workshops for schools and other groups. This program is for any faith, culture and ethnicity in assisting parents to “parent with purpose.” If your family is in chaos, then this program is for you! This family system is designed to start with children at the age of 5 through 18 teaching authority, consequences, affirmation and being consistent and correct as parents. We have certified F.AM.I.L.Y. Rules Counselors available to assist you. Our volunteers have been screened with background checks and approved by the Fort Bend Juvenile Probation Department. Become a Tutor-Understand our Student’s Lifelines Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. RUOK Program

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.

PLEASE NOTE - Pets on Leashes It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS

As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

Congregation Or Ami

Great Comedy Night Ross Bennett As comedian Allan Sherman once said, “you don’t have to be Jewish”…… to perform comedy at Congregation Or Ami, West Houston’s only conservative Synagogue, but you do have to be funny. On Saturday, October 13th, nationally renowned comedian Ross Bennett, will perform his unique brand of very funny stand-up comedy at the Synagogue, in an authentic comedy club setting, at 8:30 PM. Bennett, a one time West Point Cadet who left the Academy to become a Comedian (“probably the greatest service I will ever do for my country”), has been performing comedy for over 30 years. Over the years, Ross Bennett has appeared at the Friar’s Club and on many TV programs including “Evening at the Improv.” Bennett also co-wrote and stars in the very funny play, PASTRAMI ON RYE WITH MAYO, about the last 4 comedians performing in the Catskills.

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s.
