COMMUNITY EVENTS CHAIR NEEDED
Our current chair will be stepping down and we are in need of someone to step up! If you are interested in being chair for community events (which include: Easter Egg Hunt, July 4th Parade & Pool Party, Fall Dive In Movie & Snow Day), please contact Kristie Poldervaart at poldervaartk@gmail.com or 281-647-9483.

Pool Monitor Needed for Park Cypress
If you use our neighborhood pools, we need you! We are in need of a pool monitor for Park Cypress. This is an easy way to volunteer. You simply observe 2 or 3 times a month (during swim season), each item on the check list (which is provided to you) and report any issues to the Pool Chair. If you are interested in this volunteer position, please contact Kristie Poldervaart at poldervaartk@gmail.com or 281-647-9483.
COMMUNITY EVENTS IS GREATLY IN NEED OF VOLUNTEERS
We have 4 community events a year (Easter Egg Hunt, July 4th Parade & Pool Party, Fall DiveIn Movie & Snow Day) and without volunteers, these events would not happen. In the past, we had enough volunteers where each person only had to help an hour for each event. The more volunteers, the lighter the load for all involved. If you have children who enjoy these events, please consider volunteering and contact Kristie Poldervaart at poldervaartk@gmail.com or 281-647-9483.
PET OWNERS
When walking your pets, PLEASE PICK UP AFTER THEM!

To reserve a park pavilion, please contact Mark Holbrook (Parks Chair) at 281-829-3094 and fill out the release form and fax it to Crest at 281-579-7062. (Form on page 2.)
What Is Wrong with My Lawn?
If you have spots in your yard that are yellowing or dying, be sure you are treating the right problem. Chinch bugs, Brown Patch and Take-all Root Rot fungus are all possible causes. Chinch bugs can be a problem when the weather is hot and dry. Keep lawns properly watered. Excess nitrogen fertilizer makes the lawn more susceptible to chinch bugs. A few chinch bugs are normal, but large brown areas, especially near pavement, need attention. To check for cinch bugs, cut a plug of half-dead, half-alive grass and submerge in water. Chinch bugs (black bodies, white wings) will float. Even if bugs are present, keeping the area well-watered may keep the grass from turning brown. You can apply a solution purchased from a lawn/garden store to help control them. Brown patch thrives in warm, humid environments, especially as nights get cooler. It can cause patches of your lawn to turn brown, wilt and dry up. If you pull on a clump, the blades will break off, leaving the runners. Turf affected by Brown Patch will grow back, usually from the middle of the area out leaving a round ring just before it rebounds completely.

Brown Patch often appears in turf, which is high in nitrogen and overfertilized. Large amounts of grass clippings left on the yard may also encourage fungus. Wet soil also encourages fungus. If you irrigate, do so late at night, just before and at daybreak - not in the evening or just after dark. Be sure your yard drains and does not hold standing water. Consult your garden center or the internet for fungicide suggestions. Two or three treatments may be needed during a growing season. One suggested organic treatment for brown patch: Mix one TBSP baking soda, one TBSP corn oil and one gallon water. Spray a light mist of the solution to your lawn.

In order for fungicides and fertilizers to work, you will need to test the PH of your soil. Lawns need to have a PH, which measures 6.5 - 7.0. You can use a PH test kit or a PH soil probe.
$15 OFF ANY REPAIR
Certain restrictions apply.
Take-all Root Rot Fungus attacks both St. Augustine and Bermuda lawns stressed by too much or too little water. If you pull on a clump of brown grass, it will lift easily - roots and all. It can appear in hot weather, unlike Brown Patch fungus, which usually appears when nights are cooler. go to www.plantanswers.com/root_rot_fungus for more information on identification and treatment. Part of this information is from www.bugspray. com/article/fungus (website).
Watering Tips
Conserve water; water only when needed. Your goal should be 1 to 1 1/2 inches per week. Less frequent, deeper watering encourages deeper root growth and helps your yard endure dry spells. Adjust your irrigation so that it does not spray paved areas or run off over curbs. Consider running two shorter cycles to allow water to soak in. Avoid watering during the hottest part of the day; you will lose more water to evaporation. see http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/newsletters/hortupdate/2011/apr/ water.html or www.ktrh.com/pages/gardenline-watering for more tips. Comply with any water restrictions set by our MUD districts.
TO DO FOR SEPTEMBER
Apply a low-nitrogen winterizer fertilizer to the lawn toward the end of this month or early in October. You may begin planting bulbs for spring. Use superphosphate or bulb food instead of bone meal to feed bulbs if squirrels are a problem. Refrigerate tulips, hyacinths, muscari and crocus at least 4-6 weeks before planting.
Ready for Hurricane Season?
Storms can develop quickly. Some advance preparation will eliminate a last minute scramble. Keep: • Trees pruned • Loose objects in yard picked up • Homeowners and flood insurance current • Emergency supplies stockpiled Our website www.greentrailstwo.com contains links to helpful emergency preparation information.

WEBSITE
The Website for Green Trails Phase II (www.greentrailstwo.com) has a “blast email” function. This feature allows the Association to send news to residents on a mass basis. The Board of Directors intends to start utilizing this function more frequently to disseminate important information, particularly in emergencies like Hurricane Ike. If you have not registered and would like to do so, please go to the “Join Our Mailing List” section of the Website. The only information that you need to enter is your email address. Each of the other items is optional, including your name. None of the information will be distributed to third parties.
Expedited ARC Approvals
Remember to apply and get ARC approval before doing work that affects the exterior appearance of your house or yard. This includes replacing fences, repainting (even the same color) and re-roofing. Approval can take up to one month, so plan ahead. In many cases, you can now expedite the process by paying a $50 fee. How Do We Look?
Curb appeal has a big impact on your property value, even if your home is not for sale. Buyers evaluate the neighborhood, not just one house. Stand back from your house and take a close look to see if it needs a mini-makeover. Think about security as well. Has your shrubbery become overgrown, covering windows or blocking the sidewalk? Do low-hanging limbs obscure the front? Does the lawn have brown areas or weeds? Is the siding mildewed or paint peeling? You may want to ask a friend’s opinion; it is easy to overlook things we see everyday. Make plans now to spruce up. Cars parked in the street are also a turn-off to buyers. Make the extra effort to keep cars in the driveway. It looks better, and is safer for your neighbors and your car.
About Our Furry Friends
Harris County requires both dogs and cats to be vaccinated, licensed and kept in fenced yards or on leashes. This is for the safety of both our neighbors and your pets. Remember, that if you leave food outside for a dog or cat, you may be attracting other nuisance animals, including rats. If your dog tends to bark, please do not leave it outside. When walking your pets, PLEASE PICK UP AFTER THEM!

SEPTEMBER…… DID YOU KNOW?
• Sapphire is the birthstone? Characteristic is Clear Thinking? Flower is Morning Glory? • German troops invaded Poland, starting World War II in Europe on September 1, 1939. • First Labor Day celebrated as a legal public holiday on September 3, 1894. • Great Britain signed Treaty of Paris, ending the Revolutionary War in America on September 3, 1783. • Francis Scott Key wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the attack on Fort McHenry on September 14, 1814. • President McKinley died in Buffalo, N.Y., of gunshot wounds inflicted by an assassin on Sept 6, 1901. Vice President Theodore Roosevelt succeeded him on September 14, 1901. • The Soviet space probe Luna 2 became the first manmade object to reach the moon as it crashed onto the lunar surface on September 14, 1959.
September 2012

• British Army became the first to use military tanks on September 15, 1916. • Pilgrims sailed from England in the Mayflower on September 16, 1620. • President James A. Garfield died of assassin’s shot on September 19,1881. • Revolutionary War patriot Nathan Hale put to death as a spy by British on September 22, 1776. • President Abraham Lincoln issued preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862. • “Publick Occurrences,” the first American newspaper, appeared in Boston on September 25, 1690. • Some famous people in history born in September: Marcus Whitman, Jesse James, J. P. Morgan, Jr., Queen Elizabeth I of England, Robert A. Taft, William Sydney Porter (writer O. Henry), Walter Reed, William Howard Taft, John Marshall, F. Scott Fitzgerald, T. S. Eliot, George Gershwin and Samuel Adams. • California was admitted as part of the United States.
GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER
Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

Katy Rebels Girls Basketball Association
The 8th Grade Katy Rebels-D’Addieco Team took 1st place in the June 30July 1, 2012 Primetime tournament in Humble, TX. The team went 4-0 to win the tournament in convincing fashion. The zone defense continued to frustrate opponents and the extra effort to complete every hustle play led to opportunities that made the difference in the games. Their continued commitment to defense allowed them to control the pace of the games and deflate opponents early, resulting in large margins of victory against quality teams. Congratulations to Allison, LaShanda, Kim, Sydney, Natalia, Alyssa, Emily, Delaney, Tianna and Anna on another successful tournament!

Kimberly Akimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, November 29-December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

CROSSROADS mentors are regular people, just like you, who prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering positive mentoring relationships. The goal is crime prevention! Our mentors must be 21 years of age and volunteer a minimum of 1 hour a week. There are many sites, areas and available times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned child. We desperately need loving and caring mentors for boys and girls that do not have anyone visiting them! Please consider devoting just one hour a week to the future of a needy child, many times you are their only visitors. Contact Jan Sadler Gibbs at jan.gibbs@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779.

Houston Children’s Charity
Join a group of people dedicated to improving the lives of children. If you are searching for a good cause to lend a hand to, you need look no further. Houston Children’s Charity is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for underprivileged, abused and disabled children who have been otherwise left behind. The scope of our support is limited only by the availability of resources. Our goal, the rainbow that we chase, is to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered. Do you have the time and desire to volunteer to help a great cause? We are always in need of volunteers to help throughout the year. This is a great way for school age kids to get in community service hours. Do you have gently used children’s clothing, shoes and jackets? At Houston Children’s Charity we are setting up the “HCC Closet.” All of the items donated will be given to children – not sold at a retail store. Please contact our office at 713-524-2878 or visit our website www.houstonchildrenscharity.org for more information on our organization.
