Green Trails Section III Board of Directors meets Bi-monthly. Homeowners wishing to attend should contact PCMI at 281-870-0505 for the next meeting date and to be placed on the agenda.

(GT SECTION III) HOA ACC FORM

If you live in the Green Trails Section III Homeowners Association, an application must be submitted prior to making exterior improvements to your property. This includes painting (even if it is the same color), roof replacement, pool installation, major landscaping improvements, play equipment or anything else that changes the appearance of your property. A form is printed in this newsletter. Please submit the completed form, prior to work beginning, to PCMI, 15995 N. Barker Landing Road, Houston, TX 77079. If you have any questions, please contact Leigh Voreh, PCMI, 281-870-0585 or one of the ACC Committee members. You will be advised of the Committees approval or denial of the application within 30 days.

Green Trails Estates (GT ESTATES) Our Management Agent For Homeowners’ Association

The Estates of Green Trails Homeowners Association contracts with Sterling Association Services, Inc. for the day-to-day operation of the Association. Ms. Debra Willis, Association Manager - 832-678-4500, ext. 305 - dwillis@sterlingasi.com
Jose Villegas, President of Sterling ASI - 832-678-4500 - jose@sterlingasi.com If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call Sterling. Please email or phone them for the following types of issues and questions: neighborhood security, landscape maintenance, trash pickup (or lack thereof!), and concerns or questions that do not fall neatly into one of these categories. Also contact them to report any needed maintenance, repairs or deed violations.

(GT ESTATES) DEBRIS IN SEWER DRAINS

Please refrain from depositing any debris (lawn clippings, leaves, pet waste, motor oil, etc.) into the streets or storm drains. Disposing of debris in the street or other portions of the storm water drainage system can create problems. Flooding takes place when the system becomes blocked with debris. This can create a flooding potential that could result in property damage. The water quality is impacted if you’ve used chemicals on your lawn or garden. In addition, pet waste left on yards can contribute to contaminated run off. Grass clippings and leaves left in the storm water system contribute to system wear and can destroy the underground system. Please make sure you dispose of your lawn clippings, leaves and other debris in a proper manner.

(GT ESTATES) Trash Service 2012

Estates of Green Trails has bi-weekly trash pick-up on Wednesdays and Saturdays by Waste Corporation of America (WCA) (Phone 281-368-8397). Should you be overlooked by WCA on a pickup day, please call WCA directly and register any complaints with Sterling ASI (Phone 281-491-0266). They will follow up with WCA about the problem. Holidays, which fall on our pickup days mean that trash will be picked up the next school service day. The following is a list of holidays observed by WCA Services: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Please have your trash ready for pickup by 7 AM on pickup days. Landscaping debris, such as large bags of grass clippings, tree branches/limbs, etc. will be picked up either day, but it must be carried to the end of your driveway and left there for pickup; you can bring these heavy items out the night before, but please not several days in advance of pickup. Your neighbors appreciate it!

Heavy household items such as hot water heaters, washers, etc. are considered “heavy trash” and are picked up on Wednesdays and Saturdays. All other trash will be picked up “at the back door” (outside the gate beside the garage, etc.) by WCA. Please be sure trash is visible and/or accessible to them, and please keep all pets safely away from that area of your yard. We pay for “back door” pickup, so that is where the men look for your trash.

Loose dogs

We have received complaints about dogs running loose. Harris County requires both dogs and cats to be vaccinated, licensed and kept in fenced yards or on leashes. This is for the safety of both our neighbors and your pets. Remember, that if you leave food outside for a dog or cat, you may be attracting other nuisance animals, including rats. If your dog tends to bark, please do not leave it outside. When walking your pets, PLEASE PICK UP AFTER THEM!

September 2012

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

Labor day september 3RD

As the Industrial Revolution took hold of the nation, the average American in the late 1800s worked 12-hour days, seven days a week in order to make a basic living. Children were also working, as they provided cheap labor to employers and laws against child labor were not strongly enforced. With the long hours and terrible working conditions, American unions became more prominent and voiced their demands for a better way of life. On Tuesday, September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers marched from city hall to Union Square in New York City, holding the first-ever Labor Day parade. Participants took an unpaid day-off to honor the workers of America, as well as vocalize issues they had with employers. As years passed, more states began to hold these parades, but Congress would not legalize the holiday until 12 years later. On May 11, 1894, workers of the Pullman Palace Car Company in Chicago struck to protest wage cuts and the firing of union representatives. They sought support from their union led by Eugene V. Debs and on June 26th the American Railroad Union called a boycott of all Pullman railway cars. Within days, 50,000 rail workers complied and railroad traffic out of Chicago came to a halt. On July 4th, President Grover Cleveland dispatched troops to Chicago. Much rioting and bloodshed ensued, but the government’s actions broke the strike and the boycott soon collapsed. Debs and three other union officials were jailed for disobeying the injunction. The strike brought worker’s rights to the public eye and Congress declared, in 1894, that the first Monday in September would be the holiday for workers, known as Labor Day. The founder of Labor Day remains unclear, but some credit either Peter McGuire, co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, or Matthew Maguire, a secretary of the Central Labor Union, for proposing the holiday.

21218 Kingsland Blvd., Katy, Texas 77450 the Independence Day celebrations of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico and Chile and to incorporate October 12th, Día de la Raza, a holiday celebrated throughout Latin America to observe the colonization, exploration and multicultural heritage of the Americas. How to celebrate: • Visit a museum or gallery that has a Hispanic Heritage Month-related exhibit. You might learn about Hispanic artists, musicians or scientists who contributed to Hispanic culture around the world. • Go to your neighborhood bookstore or library to hear a lecture about Hispanic history. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by learning about any one of the 21 countries represented by Hispanic society. • Attend a Hispanic dance performance or a Latin music concert. Take in the rhythm of the music or watch dancers move to the Latin beat. Or take dance lessons yourself, such as a salsa-dancing lesson. Ask ahead to find out whether or not you will need a partner for the class. • Watch a film in Spanish (with or without subtitles), see a play or musical related to a Hispanic tradition or see a performance put on by Hispanic Americans. If you don’t speak Spanish, learning a few words could open up a whole new world to you. • Volunteer for a Hispanic-related club such as a Mexican cooking club, Spanish literature group or Puerto Rican singles club. Begin writing for a publication written in Spanish or teach ESL. Whatever you choose, get involved in your community as a way to celebrate Hispanic heritage.

Grandparents Day

This day has a threefold purpose: • To honor grandparents • To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children. • To help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer. The impetus for a National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide. President Jimmy Carter, in 1978, proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day.

Complete Customer Satisfaction Has been the Key to 30 Years of Service in the Houston Area

As Grandparents Day approaches, help children and/or grandchildren to identify and date all photos in old family albums. Many happy memories can be derived from this. Everyone is a grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this day - a time to discover one’s roots and learn patience, understanding and appreciation for the elderly. Many times, only grandparents have answers to questions about family histories. When this information is passed down to the grandchildren, everyone can be assured of his heritage being preserved. Most important, Grandparents Day can signify a loving spirit that lives within us throughout the year, a spirit of love and respect for our elders. Grandparents Day is the perfect time to enhance communication between the generations. There are many, many elderly who are not fortunate enough to have family nearby. The need is increasing every day to fill the void of their loneliness. In every neighborhood, there are elderly who would love an opportunity to be a Foster Grandparent. Parents, churches, schools and senior organizations, help children to adopt a grandparent! Source: www.grandparents-day.com

SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL LITERACY MONTH

Millions of people have difficulty reading. That’s because, despite what many people think, literacy issues are not just relegated to children and young adults. To improve literacy in America, we must consider readers of all ages and backgrounds. Here are some tips to help you improve and encourage reading and literacy. Here’s How: 1. Read books every day and let people see you do it. You may be a role model (to your child, your niece or nephew or some other individual in your family or circle of acquaintances). 2. Get involved with your local library. Many libraries offer literacy programs, which encourage reading in your community. See what you can do to help. 3. Talk about reading. Ask questions about what the individuals in your life are reading.

DIRECTIONS: With a large, sharp knife, remove the top 1/4 section of the watermelon. With a melon baller, scoop flesh from inside of watermelon, removing as many seeds as possible. Leave 1/2 inch of flesh inside the shell of the watermelon. Scoop cantaloupe and honeydew in the same manner, removing as much flesh as possible, and discarding the rinds. Refrigerate fruits separately until ready to assemble. In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, bring water and sugar to a boil. Remove from heat, and continue stirring until sugar has completely dissolved. Add lemon zest and set aside to cool. To serve: Place watermelon balls, cantaloupe, honeydew, oranges, pineapple, strawberries and grapes in a large mixing bowl. Pour syrup over and toss thoroughly. Transfer mixture to watermelon bowl and serve. Set aside any fruit mixture that will not fit. There will be enough fruit to refill the bowl. Yields 20 servings. The First WEeks of School

How your child reacts to starting school will depend on their personality, their background and how prepared they are for this next big step in their lives. By now they’ll probably be responding to school in a variety of ways – they might be really excited and looking forward to going to school each day. They may be showing signs of not wanting to go or taking school as just a part of their daily routine. Or they may go through all of these reactions depending on how they feel on any particular day. Most children will be experiencing some change – after all they’ll be learning, playing and interacting with new people and getting used to a whole new environment – it will take them some time to settle in. Some things you can do to help your child adjust to school include: • Ensure they have a healthy breakfast – this is important for energy to get through the day. • Aim to get out of the house on time in a calm, relaxed manner to set up a positive tone for their day. To help you achieve this, try giving your child some simple tasks like putting the cereal or fruit for breakfast on the table or collecting their hat, sunscreen and drink bottle and putting them into their school bag. Don’t worry if they are slow or make mistakes with these tasks at first. They will get the hang of it, and it’ll be one less thing you’ll have to do. • Make time to chat to your child about what they did at school that day. This will give you a good idea of what they enjoy doing and how they are getting on in their new environment. Remember, your child’s emotional reaction to going to school may vary a lot, especially during the first few weeks. • Develop a bedtime routine so your child can wind down at the end of the day and get a good night’s sleep – children aged five need around 10 to 11 hours sleep a night. • Try not to put too many expectations on yourself or your child; if they are happy and enjoying school, that’s a real achievement. You know your child best. If you have any questions about how they are settling in at school, contact your child’s teacher so you can talk things through together. You can contact your child’s teacher in person, over the telephone or via email, whichever suits you and your situation best. www.education.vic.gov.au

• Label all your child’s belongings and show your child where these labels have been placed • Check when any special items, such as a library bag or art smock, are needed at school • Note where lost property is held at the school.

Food for energy

• Ensure your child has a balanced breakfast before starting the school day • Pack a healthy lunch and snacks and explain when they should be eaten. It’s a good idea to have different containers for each of the snacks. Try not to include nuts in school lunches and snacks as many schools have rules about bringing nuts to school • Make sure your child can manage to unwrap any food wrappings.

Avoiding the last-minute rush

• Try to leave home with plenty of time to get settled before the school day starts • Make sure you allow time to say goodbye and for your child to join others at play.

2012-2013 CRITERIA FOR FREE AND REDUCED PRICE MEALS

Katy Independent School District announced its policy for providing free and reduced price meals for children eligible under the federal income guidelines for the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program. Go to www. squaremeals.com to view a copy of the policy.

A Free and Reduced meal application form and an information letter will also be distributed in the student’s first day packet. A paper application will not need to be completed if you submitted the 2012 - 2013 application online. If your child was on the program at the end of the previous school year, they are eligible for the same benefit for the first 30 operating days of the new school year or until a new application is processed. A new application is required each school year. The Nutrition and Food Service Department is located at 5364 Franz Rd, Katy, TX 77493. Staff is available Monday - Friday, 8 AM - 2:30 PM to assist parents in completing the application. Bring the names of all members of the households and their Gross Monthly Income. For any questions, call the Katy ISD Nutrition Department office at 281-396-6240. Applications are available online, at any district school and at the food service office. Applications may be submitted any time during the school year, which started on August 15, 2012. The information households provide on the application will be used for the purpose of determining meal eligibility. Application information may be verified by school officials at any time during the school year.

Children living in households whose income are at or below the federally approved levels, based on household size, may be eligible for free or reduced price meals. Transfer students approved for the program from another school district may either complete a Katy ISD application or provide documentation of their eligibility status. Foster children who are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court may also be eligible for benefits regardless of the income of the household with whom they reside.
The Nutrition and Food Service Department encourages parents in all eligible households to complete an online application prior to the start of school. Visit the district website (www.katyisd.org) for the online application.

Katy Rebels Girls Basketball Association

The 8th Grade Katy Rebels-D’Addieco Team took 1st place in the June 30July 1, 2012 Primetime tournament in Humble, TX. The team went 4-0 to win the tournament in convincing fashion. The zone defense continued to frustrate opponents and the extra effort to complete every hustle play led to opportunities that made the difference in the games. Their continued commitment to defense allowed them to control the pace of the games and deflate opponents early, resulting in large margins of victory against quality teams. Congratulations to Allison, LaShanda, Kim, Sydney, Natalia, Alyssa, Emily, Delaney, Tianna and Anna on another successful tournament!

Congregation Or Ami - Great Comedy Night - Ross Bennett

As comedian Allan Sherman once said, “you don’t have to be Jewish”…… to perform comedy at Congregation Or Ami, West Houston’s only conservative Synagogue, but you do have to be funny. On Saturday, October 13th, nationally renowned comedian Ross Bennett, will perform his unique brand of very funny stand-up comedy at the Synagogue, in an authentic comedy club setting, at 8:30 PM. Bennett, a one time West Point Cadet who left the Academy to become a Comedian (“probably the greatest service I will ever do for my country”), has

Kimberly Akimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, November 29-December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

Volunteers Needed IN KATY We Believe In The Power Of Second Chances

CROSSROADS mentors are regular people, just like you, who prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering positive mentoring relationships. The goal is crime prevention! Our mentors must be 21 years of age and volunteer a minimum of 1 hour a week. There are many sites, areas and available times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned child. We desperately need loving and caring mentors for boys and girls that do not have anyone visiting them! Please consider devoting just one hour a week to the future of a needy child, many times you are their only visitors. Contact Jan Sadler Gibbs at jan.gibbs@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779.

VOLUNTEER KATY

Meet with other local people who will gather and discuss/plan community service projects and try to figure out the best way to make a difference in our community. All volunteers welcome. Contact: Linda Wilson at 281-222-1771 or visit http://volunteerism.meetup.com/230.

Houston Children’s Charity

Join a group of people dedicated to improving the lives of children. If you are searching for a good cause to lend a hand to, you need look no further. Houston Children’s Charity is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for underprivileged, abused and disabled children who have been otherwise left behind. The scope of our support is limited only by the availability of resources. Our goal, the rainbow that we chase, is to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered. Do you have the time and desire to volunteer to help a great cause? We are always in need of volunteers to help throughout the year. This is a great way for school age kids to get in community service hours. Do you have gently used children’s clothing, shoes and jackets? At Houston Children’s Charity we are setting up the “HCC Closet.” All of the items donated will be given to children – not sold at a retail store. Please contact our office at 713-524-2878 or visit our website www.houstonchildrenscharity.org for more information on our organization.
