American Taekwondo Association’s 3 Time World Champion Katy, Texas has a new 3-Time World Champion, Mikayla Francisco, age 8. This past June 2012 at the American Taekwondo Association’s World Championships, held in Little Rock, Arkansas, Mikayla took home 3 Gold World Champion Titles in Traditional Form, Sparring and Creative Form. She competed in a total of 7 Top Ten divisions, placing in each event with 3 Silver medals in Traditional Weapon, Extreme Form, Extreme weapon and a Bronze medal in Creative Weapon. At age 6, Mikayla earned her first Texas State Champion Title in Creative Form in 2010 (Division-Girls 8y/o and under). At age 7, Mikayla eventually earned 5 Texas State Champion Titles in Traditional Form, Traditional Weapon, Sparring, Creative Form and Creative Weapon in 2011 (Division-Girls 8y/o and under). Mikayla was promoted to the rank of 1st Degree Black Belt in June 2011 at age 7.

Rules of the Road for Westheimer Lakes and Westheimer Lakes North This is a reminder…. The operation of motorized vehicles (ATV’s, dirt bikes, golf carts, etc.) other than mowing equipment on pathways or trails maintained by the Association or any other Common Area within the community is not allowed. According to the Texas department of public safety: • ATV’s are not allowed on a street and an operator crossing a street must have a valid driver’s license. • Golf carts are allowed on roads, but must obey all traffic laws including speed limits. If operated on a road the golf cart must have a license plate and the driver must have a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance. • Mopeds and motor assisted scooters are treated as regular bicycles. Golf Balls Hitting golf balls is meant for the golf course only. It can cause damage not only to personal property but to people as well. Please respect your neighbors and refrain from hitting golf balls inside the community.

No Trespassing on Residents Private Property There have been complaints about children crossing through residents’ private yards to get to the facilities. Please let children know that they cannot cross private property. If this should occur more than once, we ask homeowners’ to contact the proper authorities.

Basketball Goals Basketball is a fun sport that many like to play. As a reminder, please make sure that all basketball goals are kept in an upright position in your driveway. Basketball goals should not be left in the street at anytime or left on the side of your home when not in use. Leaving Basketball goals in the street can be a nuisance to drivers in the community and a hazard should there be a need for an emergency vehicle to gain access to your street. Please note this is also a violation of deed restrictions and if you receive violation letters regarding this matter you could be sent to the attorney and be liable for those charges.

Unwanted Solicitors NO SOLICITING signs are posted throughout the entrances of the community. If this continues to be a growing issue at your residence and would like to place a NO SOLICITING sign in your yard, you may certainly do so. Please be sure that the sign is placed by your front door and place only (1) sign at your home. Canyon Gate EZ Tag Lane Access Please be patient when approaching the EZ Tag barrier arm and obey the signs. After stopping at the stop sign, proceed slowly and wait until the barrier arm opens fully. Bumping or hitting the barrier arm causes costly and unnecesary repairs to the Association. If there is a car in front of you, please remain at the stop sign until the car has gone through the arm and the arm is closed. The barrier arm closes after each vehicle every time.

Westheimer Lakes – Gate Attendant Entry TIPS • EZ TAG LANE (RIGHT LANE) is for EZ Tag stickered vehicles ONLY that are residents and have registered at the onsite office. • Residents with a Westheimer Lakes vehicle windshield sticker must enter by way of the Gate attendant only. (2 lanes under the cover). • Visitors must enter through the visitor lane (far left lane) nearest the building and must be signed in by the Gate attendant. If the gate attendant is not on duty, the EZ tag lane is left open and visitors can enter the community. * Contact the SplashPad Texas onsite office at 832-222-2355 to register or for more general information *

CANYON SPRINGS AND CANYON FALLS SECTION UPDATES

The Canyon Springs and Canyon Falls Gates EZ Tag Entry lanes are for registered resident entry only via electronic EZ Tags (Harris County EZ TAG or Community fast pass tags for community use only). Electronic entry tags, including credit card size Access Cards and telephone home number registration services are available to all Canyon Springs and Canyon Falls residents at the SplashPad office from 9 AM until 5 PM, Tuesday through Saturday. Call 832-222-2355 for more details. The entry will remain open during the day while sales and construction of new homes are in operation and gates will close at night. The gated areas may be accessed three (3) ways; with EZ Tag or fast pass tags, Access Card (reader is located at the dial up box in the left lane) or you may dial the home code on the telephone 10 key pad. If someone is home to answer, access may then be granted. If you experience difficulty, the gate attendant’s office may be called by pressing #0001 on the 10 keypad. In the event the gates do not open, please call the gate attendant and they can open the gate during the evening hours of 7 PM until 7 AM. Report all gate malfunctions to either 832-222-2650 or at 832-222-2355, if no one is available, please leave a message with your name, phone number and a brief description of the situation. The gate repairs will be called into the gate service company.

Deed Restriction Process 1st letter: Notifying owner of violation and giving them (30 days) to cease and desist. (Legally no further letters can go out for this violation until the (30 days) has expired.) 2nd letter: After the (30 days) has expired from the 1st letter a 2nd letter notifying the owner of violation will be sent. (Please note that depending on what the violation is the board can send the account to the attorney when the (30 days) has expired from this letter.) 3rd letter: This letter is optional to the board and depending on what the violation is they do not always feel the need to send a 3rd letter. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves.

First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s.

RUOK Program

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. FUNDRAISERS Pregnancy Help Center of West Houston FundRaising Event - Baby Bottle Blessings Pregnancy Help Center of West Houston is excited to announce that 27 local churches participated in this year’s Baby Bottle Blessings event. The event ran from Mother’s Day thru Father’s Day. Local residents picked up 2,864 Baby Bottles at their home church and filled the bottles with change, bills and checks during the month long event. This event spotlights the extensive resources that Pregnancy Help Center provides to residents of 3 counties who are faced with circumstances surrounding a present, potential or former pregnancy. Pregnancy Test, Peer Counseling, classes for Moms and Dads, as well as, limited ultrasound and help with maternity clothing and baby items are just some of the services that the Center provides to their clients. The Sunshine Kids are a non-profit organization dedicated to children with cancer. The children have the opportunity to go on vacations with other childhood cancer patients. It gives them the opportunity to share with others in their same situation and gives them a break in their treatment. The Gary Greene Champions office has an annual fundraiser in the northwest part of Houston. This year, it will be at the Red River Saloon on 249 (23238) just north of Spring Cypress on Wednesday, October 3rd from 5-9 PM, with food served at 7 PM. CHURCH NEWS CrossPoint Community Church is hosting it’s first 5K event! GO 5K A Different Way and The Outdoor Market, organized by the CrossPoint’s Community Impact Team, will be held at CrossPoint Westgreen, located at 700 S. Westgreen Blvd, Katy TX 77450 on November 17, 2012. CrossPoint Westgreen will utilize their property, as well as the adjacent Mason Creek running trails and Rick Rice Park to make up the 3.1 mile route for the race. The route will also include a series of obstacles & “outreach” tasks, which include gathering care package items and stowing them in a cinched bag that each of the 500 participants will carry throughout the journey. The completed care package bags will be delivered to persons in need throughout the community as part of the CrossPoint Community Impact “Project Feed the Need.” Participant registration begins Sept. 9th continuing thru a firm deadline of Oct. 28th. Following the race is The Outdoor Market, a second annual event that features vendors, craftsmen, household items, children’s activities and concessions. Proceeds from both events will be donated to Christ Clinic of Katy.

2012-2013 CRITERIA FOR FREE AND REDUCED PRICE MEALS Katy Independent School District announced its policy for providing free and reduced price meals for children eligible under the federal income guidelines for the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program. Go to www.squaremeals.com to view a copy of the policy. Children living in households whose income are at or below the federally approved levels, based on household size, may be eligible for free or reduced price meals. Transfer students approved for the program from another school district may either complete a Katy ISD application or provide documentation of their eligibility status. Foster children who are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court may also be eligible for benefits regardless of the income of the household with whom they reside.   The Nutrition and Food Service Department encourages parents in all eligible households to complete an online application prior to the start of school. Visit the district website (www.katyisd.org) for the online application. A Free and Reduced meal application form and an information letter will also be distributed in the student’s first day packet. A paper application will not need to be completed if you submitted the 2012 - 2013 application online. If your child was on the program at the end of the previous school year, they are eligible for the same benefit for the first 30 operating days of the new school year or until a new application is processed. LAMAR CISD TRUSTEES NAME 4 SCHOOLS

At its regular June meeting, the Lamar CISD Board of Trustees named the District’s next four campuses. Voters approved funding for two elementary schools, a middle school, a junior high and a high school in the November, 2011 Bond Election. Judge James “Jim” Adolphus Elementary is under construction in the Long Meadow Farms subdivision. Judge Adolphus served as a Missouri City Councilman, a Fort Bend County Justice of the Peace and as Fort Bend County Judge from 1998 to 2002. For 17 years, Adolphus was deputy chief of the Mercy Corps, a free rescue, ambulance and first-aid service, staffed by volunteers. As a Missouri City Councilman he was instrumental in forming the Fort Bend Economic Development Council. Adolphus Elementary is scheduled to open for the 2013-2014 school year.

John Arredondo Elementary will be located near the Summer Lakes subdivision. Arredondo served as the first Hispanic member of the Rosenberg City Council and the overpass on FM 723 that rises over the train tracks is named in his honor. He was instrumental in getting the overpass built. Arredondo owned several businesses in Rosenberg and helped get the Fort Bend Technical Center built in Richmond. Arredondo Elementary is scheduled to be open for the 2014-2015 school year. Lamar CISD’s fifth secondary complex will be built in the Fulshear area and will eventually include a high school, junior high and middle school. Leaman Junior High and Fulshear High School are projected to be open for the 2016-2017 school year. Dean Leaman Junior High School is named for a civic leader in Richmond and Rosenberg and the owner of Allied Concrete. Leaman served as president of the Rosenberg-Richmond Chamber of Commerce, was a founding member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, served as president of the National Lumber Dealers Association and served on the boards of Polly Ryon/Oak Bend Hospital and the George Foundation. He worked tirelessly in bringing Wharton County Junior College and the Texas State Technical Institute to the area. Churchill Fulshear Jr. High School will also be located near the city that is his families’ namesake. Born in Tennessee, Fulshear moved to Texas with his family in 1824. He served as a scout in the War for Texas Independence. He operated a racetrack called Churchill Downs on the family plantation, which was near the present day Fulshear. Voters approved funding for a middle school adjacent to George Ranch High School and Reading Junior High. It was named in honor of Polly Ryon at the same time as the high school and the junior high.

Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

We are a ladies daytime chorus with approximately 30 members. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 30 years. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9182 remembered the 59th Anniversary of the Signing of the Korean War Armistice Agreement - Cease Fire - on Friday, July 27th, at the VFW Veterans Memorial Museum. The newly renovated museum is located at 6206 George Bush Drive, Katy, Texas. The post hosted a presentation, which was led by several veterans who severed during the Korean War. These veterans briefly shared highlights of their experiences and memories of the war fought on the Korean Peninsula.
