VISIT US ONLINE! WWW.KATYHAMLET.ORG VISITENOS ONLINE LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Hamlet Homeowners, Please mark your calendars! National Night Out will be Tuesday, October 2nd from 6-8 PM, at the Hamlet Community Park! This will be a great opportunity to share an evening out with your neighbors! If you would like to volunteer to help for this event, please contact me at 281-347-2658. The pool furniture got a much-needed upgrade this summer! With record attendance at the pool, our aging chairs were strained, sun-stained, peeling and giving out. We now have two lovely picnic tables with umbrellas. We also have 20 new pool chairs and 10 new lounge chairs. There are 3 new acrylic tables for playing cards or having a snack under an umbrella, as well. If you did not get a chance to enjoy the pool furniture this summer, make sure to plan to come to National Night Out so you can give it a try! You may also notice there is a new picnic table in the park just north of the playground - just right for picnicking or fitting in a quick study session! Please remember that the WCA Waste Corporation (our trash service in the Hamlet, which is provided through a contract with our MUD) has special parameters for the pick up of tree, shrub and bush trimmings. If you place trimmings on the curb, which are not prepared to the WCA’s specifications, you run the risk of the trimmings being left behind. The trimmings must be bundled, must not be longer than four feet in length and must not weigh more than 40 pounds. Any branches you include with your trimmings may not be more than three inches in diameter. Following these guidelines will save you frustration and insure that your hard work in the yard is done for the day! If you have any specific questions regarding these guidelines or if you have followed these guidelines and still have difficulty, please contact the WCA directly at 281-368-8397. If they have missed your trash in error, they will arrange to come back by to collect it within 24 hours. Please remember not to set your trash out before the evening prior to trash pick up and return your trashcans to your backyard or garage as soon as possible the day of trash collection. Congratulations to the Martinez family of 23818 Tayloe House Lane, Williamsburg Hamlet’s August Yard of the Month Award recipient!!! The Beautification Committee will be on the lookout through the end of the month for the Hamlet’s most beautiful

Items that may be recycled in the Hamlet are newspapers, magazines, colored paper, paper bags, folders, phone books, greeting cards, cardboard, cereal boxes, plastics #1-7, pots and pans, glass bottles and jars, aluminum foil and cans, steel and tin cans, gutters, copper and scrap metal. Items that cannot be recycled are plastic bags, Styrofoam, soiled pizza boxes, coat hangers, paint and solvent containers, light bulbs, mirrors, windows, dishes and cups, wet or dirty paper, paper towels, tissue paper, toilet paper and single use plates and cups unless they are marked as #1-7 plastic. Thanks so much for making the Hamlet and the world a greener place to live! Tree, bush or yard trimmings must be bundled, must not be longer than four feet in length and must not weigh more than 40 pounds. Any branches you include with your trimmings may not be more than three inches in diameter. If they have missed your trash in error, they will arrange to come back by to collect it within 24 hours if you notify them by phone. PLEASE SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR PET
Your pet is a cherished member of your family. As their caregiver, you have a very real responsibility to their health and well-being. One of the most important decisions you will make in their care is to have your pet spayed or neutered. By having your female pet spayed before their first heat, you help prevent uterine infections and breast cancer, which are fatal in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats. Having your male pet neutered can help prevent testicular cancer and control unwanted litters. Female cats usually go into heat for four to five days every three weeks during breeding season, making a lot of noise and urinating often (sometimes in your house!) in an attempt to attract a mate. This will be entirely relieved by spaying your female cat. Unneutered males will roam far from home, risking life and limb in the streets and in fights with other males in the pursuit of a mate. Neutering your male cat is a way of protecting him from the dangers of roaming and fighting in the streets. Spaying or neutering your pet is a great cost savings. The cost of spaying or neutering your pet is
Williamsburg Hamlet
September 2012

much less than caring for a new litter and there are programs that can aid in the cost of the procedure for low-income families. The cost of the procedure is also considerably less than the medical care for your pet following an accident when your unneutered male escapes or gets into an altercation in the street. Many people feel that if their pet has a litter it will be a good life lesson for their children to learn about “the miracle of birth.” Your responsible pet ownership is a great lesson to your child! Many unwanted pets end up in shelters every year. Allowing your pet to have offspring you never intended to keep is not the lesson you want to teach. Please consider the large number of educational books and videos about birth, which can fill this need for your children responsibly. Spaying and neutering is a great benefit to your community! When streets are overcrowded with stray animals, driving or going for a walk or bike ride can become dangerous - for both people and animals. Please think about the large number of unwanted animals in our country when you are considering spaying or neutering your pet. Every year, millions of domesticated animals will be euthanized for lack of homes and even more will end up living on the streets. Please be a part of the solution and call to set up an appointment to have your pet spayed or neutered today, if you have not already done so!

DEED RESTRICTIONS
Please take some time to take an assessment of the exterior of your home. A fresh coat of paint is a solid investment in preserving your home. Approved colors for the Hamlet are earth tones. Please submit an architectural review for your chose color and consider this important home maintenance responsibility. If you have replaced your siding and have yet to paint, please do so. Tending to your landscaping can boost your curb appeal, as well as save you greatly in home repair in the long run. Overgrown plants near your home can conceal insect infestation and damage your foundation and home exterior. Now is a good time to take inventory and prune your plants. Avoid planting close to your home. The Board asks that those of you who have received letters from the management company comply with the requests to abide by the community’s deed restrictions. When you purchased a home in this community, you chose to participate in our rules and regulations. We all want a beautiful Hamlet and every home makes a difference! If you are having difficulty complying with the request, please contact the management company and explain your situation. Communication is the first step toward understanding!

ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW
A new Architectural Review Application is available. This year, there have been some changes in the Texas State laws and our policies have evolved to reflect those changes. The new laws allow for solar energy devices, the display of U.S., Texas and U.S. armed forces flags and rainwater harvesting systems, as well as certain types of shingles. All of these additions to your home would require an architectural review and are only allowed in certain places on your home/lot. The policy changes will be available on the new website www.katyhamlet.org. To avoid penalties, please complete the approval form before you begin any change or addition to your home, which will affect the exterior appearance of your property. Martin Courville is the board contact for architectural reviews; so if you have any questions regarding the approval process or if an application is needed, please contact him at 281-343-6881, mmcourville@ consolidated.net or contact Lisa Henkhaus at PMG at 713-329-7100. Thank you in advance for your cooperation!
PET OWNERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY
Pets are valued and loved members of the Hamlet community! If you love your pets, please keep them inside your home or your enclosed yard! Your neighbors cannot be responsible for your loved pets and they are not safe outside of your home or yard. All pets in the Hamlet must be licensed, vaccinated and wear proper identifying tags. If your fence is in need of repair, please take time to repair it. A bored pet will find its way into the streets and cannot be kept safe once it is out of your yard. If you encounter loose dogs or cats in the neighborhood, you may call Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services at the following number: 281-999-3191. You may also call this number if you have stray or abandoned animals on your property. Thank you for caring about your pets, your neighbors and your neighborhood!

REPORT INCIDENTS
Please help keep the Hamlet safe and nuisance free by reporting incidents when you notice them. Speeding vehicles, suspicious persons or vehicles and annoying sounds (car alarms that do not get turned off by their owner at any time of day or dogs barking and loud music after 10 PM) are all examples of non-emergency incidents to report to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Non-emergency calls should be made to 713-221-6000. Be observant and take down any information that will be useful to the reporting deputy - license plate numbers for speeding or suspicious vehicles, as well as make, model and color of the vehicle, will all make the deputy’s job easier upon arrival. Take down a brief description of any suspicious persons you see - physical description and clothing, as well as where you last saw them and which way they were traveling. If you are reporting an annoying noise, attempt to determine the physical address of where the noise is coming from, so you can inform dispatch when you call.

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER
Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations

explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

SCHOOL NEWS
2012-2013 CRITERIA FOR FREE & REDUCED PRICE MEALS
Katy Independent School District announced its policy for providing free and reduced price meals for children eligible under the federal income guidelines for the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program. Go to www.squaremeals.com to view a copy of the policy. Children living in households whose income are at or below the federally approved levels, based on household size, may be eligible for free or reduced price meals. Transfer students approved for the program from another school district may either complete a Katy ISD application or provide documentation of their eligibility status. Foster children who are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court may also be eligible for benefits regardless of the income of the household with whom they reside. The Nutrition and Food Service Department encourages parents in all eligible households to complete an online application prior to the start of school. Visit the district website (www.katyisd.org) for the online application. A Free and Reduced meal application form and an information letter will also be distributed in the student’s first day packet. A paper application will not need to be completed if you submitted the 2012 2013 application online. If your child was on the program at the end of the previous school year, they are eligible for the same benefit for the first 30 operating days of the new school year or until a new application is processed. A new application is required each school year. The Nutrition and Food Service Department is located at 5364 Franz Rd, Katy, TX 77493. Staff is available Monday - Friday, 8 AM - 2:30 PM to assist parents in completing the application. Bring the names of all members of the households and their Gross Monthly Income. For any questions, call the Katy ISD Nutrition Department office at 281-396-6240. Applications are available online, at any district school and at the food service office. Applications may be submitted any time during the school year, which started on August 15, 2012. The information households provide on the application will be used for the purpose of determining meal eligibility. Application information may be verified by school officials at any time during the school year.

3 TIME WORLD CHAMPION AMERICAN TAEKWONDO ASSOCIATION
KATY REBELS GIRLS BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION
The 8th Grade Katy Rebels-D’Addieco Team took 1st place in the June 30-July 1, 2012 Primetime tournament in Humble, TX. The team went 4-0 to win the tournament in convincing fashion. The zone defense continued to frustrate opponents and the extra effort to complete every hustle play led to opportunities that made the difference in the games. Their continued commitment to defense allowed them to control the pace of the games and deflate opponents early, resulting in large margins of victory against quality teams. Congratulations to Allison, LaShanda, Kim, Sydney, Natalia, Alyssa, Emily, Delaney, Tianna and Anna on another successful tournament!

CONGREGATION OR AMI GREAT COMEDY NIGHT - ROSS BENNETT
As comedian Allan Sherman once said, “you don’t have to be Jewish”…… to perform comedy at Congregation Or Ami, West Houston’s only conservative Synagogue, but you do have to be funny. On Saturday, October 13th, nationally renowned comedian Ross Bennett, will perform his unique brand of very funny standup comedy at the Synagogue, in an authentic comedy club setting, at 8:30 PM. Bennett, a one time West Point Cadet who left the Academy to become a Comedian (“probably the greatest service I will ever do for my country”), has been performing comedy for over 30 years. Over the years, Ross Bennett has appeared at the Friar’s Club and on many TV programs including “Evening at the Improv.” Bennett also co-wrote and stars in the very funny play, PASTRAMI ON RYE WITH MAYO, about the last 4 comedians performing in the Catskills. The October 13th performance is open to the entire West Houston / Katy community. Please purchase your tickets early, as seating is limited. Congregation Or Ami is located at 3443 Wilcrest Drive Houston, TX 77042. Tickets, which are $36 each, include a wonderful selection of desserts, wine, soda and coffee. Premium seating and group tables are available. For additional information, please check online at www.oramihouston.org or call 713-334-4300.
