(BC 1&2) Yard of the Month
Yard of the month goes to the homeowner of 6419 Harcourt Bridge Drive and they received a cash prize of $50. Thanks to all those who always maintain good looking yards. As some homeowners may wonder, we want to clarify that residences who have not paid the annual dues, are not eligible for the Yard of the Month award. If a resident needs assistance in arranging payment plans for the annual dues, please contact our management company and discuss the arrangements.
(BC 1&2) back to school
We are a couple weeks into the new school year and learning how to focus and get something done is about more than just good grades - it’s the foundation for success in life. Mastering the skills of getting organized, staying focused and seeing work through to the end will help in just about everything you do. You probably know the basics by now, but here’s a helpful refresher.
Get Organized
Organization is the first step. It makes everything else a little easier. (This information also holds true to keeping your household running as smooth as it can, apply these fundamentals to keeping track of your finances, bills, children’s schedules, activities and anything else going on in your home.) Keep your assignments and class information together in binders, notebooks or folders that are organized by subject. You might want to set up a file drawer at home to keep track of research, returned assignments and other things you want to hold on to. (Parents, think: Bills, warranties, policies etc.) If you find yourself stuffing loose papers in your bag or grabbing different notebooks for the same class just because they’re close at hand, it’s time to stop and regroup. Take an evening to get things organized again. (Parents: don’t just pile up the mail; sort it as it comes in and file it so when you need it you can locate it without having to re-sort again and again.) Maybe you can’t carry different spiral-bounds for every class. One solution is to carry a binder that has separate sections. Another idea is to take notes in one notebook and at the end of each day rewrite them in a separate binder. This takes more time, but it is a great study skill because it allows you to read, write and hopefully, summarize all that was important during the school day. The more you review material, the more likely you are to remember it.

Whatever you choose, your system has to work for you. If it doesn’t, change it until you find what does. It’s a great way to learn about yourself and what works for your unique needs. (Parents: you too need to find the way that works for you to organize the home, use a wall calendar, file system with 31 slots or with smart phones and a home computer you can do most things on line and set up electronic reminders to keep yourself organized. Whatever methods you choose, get organized.)

(BCS3) VOLUNTARY WATER CONSERVATION
It appears that the early summer rains are well behind us and that drought conditions are in full force. Each of us has received an insert in our Harris County MUD 102 water bill asking that we observe the voluntary water conservation program that they have laid out. There are two simple guidelines with respect to this program: Even numbered residences should water outdoors on Wednesdays and Sundays while odd numbered residences should water outdoors on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Water should not be used outdoors between the hours of 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM and between the hours of 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM. Let’s all work together to conserve our water resources while maintaining our yards within the guideline suggestions outlined by the Harris County MUD district.

(BCS3) YARD OF THE MONTH
The August Yard of the Month winners are Natalie and Jamin Jones of 6531 Harcourt Bridge Drive. Ever since moving back into the neighborhood a couple of years ago, they have done an excellent job in totally renovating and restoring their yard to be one of the nicest looking ones in BCS3. Their hard work is doubly impressive when you consider the extreme drought conditions that we have experienced over the past two summers. The Board would like to sincerely thank all of our neighbors for their consistent efforts in keeping their properties looking as good as possible. All this work helps keep our neighborhood looking great and subsequently keeping our property values as high as possible. Congratulations for all the good work!
(BCS3) 2013 HOME OWNERS ASSESSMENT
The Board and Management Company will be working on the budget for next year over the next couple of months. Although it is difficult predict the final number at this time, every effort will be made to keep the 2013 Assessment as close as possible to this past year’s $300 figure.

if you plan to attend. That way, if something comes up, your proxy will count toward the important quorum even if you don’t come. Without a quorum, we cannot elect new Board members, approve budgets, or conduct other business critical to our neighborhood. We will be voting for at least two positions on our board at this meeting. This cannot be done if we do not have a quorum. Having an active board saves each homeowner from increases in the association dues. We also need people who are willing to run for these positions. I am told the time involved is not great but feel free to talk with a current board member to get the details. Contact information is at the end of this publication under “important numbers.” We will also be actively seeking someone to take over Yard of the Month in 2013. This is a great position for two people to share. Sometimes our schedules get busy and there isn’t time to review the neighborhood and select a winner. If there were two people the duties could be shared. We hope to see you at the meeting! Maybe there will be door prizes again. You won’t know unless you come.
(ChC) Yard of the Month
Due to several reasons, July’s YOM did not happen. sometimes circumstances just interfere with our lives. But we are back and our August winner is your neighbors at 14418 Old Tybee. I’m sure you drive on Old Tybee often (as do I) but did you realize the townhomes are part of Charlestown Colony? Often these homes are overlooked, maybe because their yards are smaller but I see people outside working on their yards regularly. So kudos to our August winner and let’s all keep up the great work. Once again, our Yard of the Month is sponsored by Cornelius Nursery. The winner receives a gift certificate to Cornelius Nursery.
(ChC) Timely Tips for Gardeners
Time to start planning a fall garden. As the days get cooler think about planning a vegetable garden. Garden vegetables taste so good and you don’t have to drive to the store to get them! Peppers and green beans both do well in the fall. Peppers sometimes ‘winterover” to produce in the spring. Late fall is also a good time to plant new trees. Shade trees planted in the southwest can help reduce air conditioning costs as they block the afternoon sunlight. January through March are best times for planting fruit trees. Remember that new trees need daily watering. While plants make life more beautiful, they also make life safer, healthier, secure and fun! America in Bloom - a national beautification program - recently released a booklet describing little-known facts about plants entitled: “Discover the Surprising Side of Plants.” Some of Cornelius Nursery’s favorite factoids are listed below. • Adding to your landscape is the ONLY home improvement inside or out - that will add a value greater than what you spend. • Plants assist in controlling storm water runoff. Trees, shrubs, groundcovers and grasses can help stabilize soil by reducing wind, water and soil erosion. • Plants reduce office pollutants and reduce employee sick time by 14%. • Gardening is one of the most rewarding forms of exercise for people of all ages. Stretching, bending, pushing, pulling, weight-bearing…gardening offers a broad range of benefits to all your muscle groups.
(ChC) Wonderful Water!
Based on the Harris County Flood Control District Map, www.harriscountyfws.org, our area has received roughly 20 inches of rain from May 30th-August 10th; almost as much as all of last year! That is wonderful. However, this doesn’t mean we can waste water. We are still under voluntary water restrictions. To reduce subsidence our area is switching from below ground aquifers to above ground water sources. The conversion is the source of the WHCRWA fee on our water bills. Ever wonder why this fee is different every month?
Colonies
September 2012
It is related to the total amount of water used and where the water is sourced. Use more water and the fee increases. How do you save money and conserve water? One simple way is to install low flow water valves in showers. You can still take a long shower but won’t use as much water. As you remodel bathrooms install low flush toilets. Lawn watering is one of the biggest wasters of water. Often more water is applied than the lawn can absorb and the water ends up running down the sewer drains. You can use a delay when watering lawns; this means water for a period of time, let that soak into the ground and then water some more. Water to get one inch into the ground. WHCRWA mailed the summer 2012 newsletter with tips and an explanation of how effective lawn watering can actually benefit your lawn. This issue isn’t posted on their website yet. A note was sent asking for it to be posted. You can also check out www. reduceyouruse.com for more tips and information.

( ChC) Texas National Night Out Tuesday, October 2, 2012
The “29th Annual National Night Out” (NNO), a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), has been scheduled for Tuesday, October 2nd. The rest of the nation observes NNO in August (It’s still too hot here in August). The NNO is supposed to be about fostering communication in neighborhoods and to stop crime. Crime prevention tips are a major theme and anyone can learn something new from them. Watch the news for information about this event in Houston. Knowing your neighbors is a great way to know if a stranger is roaming around. Looking out for each other is the best way to reduce crime and keep the neighborhood safe. National night out is also sponsored by Target. Check out www.nationalnightout.org/nno/about for more information.
CONCORD COLONY
Happy Labor Day! The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. On June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. Whether you plan on spending the weekend with family or friends, barbecuing at home, catching a game, heading to the beach, just lounging around the house or whatever you do, we hope everyone has a wonderful relaxing Labor Day weekend. Don’t forget garbage will not be picked up on Monday, September 3rd. We’d like to wish a Happy Grandparent’s day to all the Grandparents in the neighborhood. Grandparent’s day is September 9th. This year is the 4th anniversary of Hurricane Ike. Ike made landfall in Galveston, Texas in the early morning hours of September 13, 2008. The neighborhood was without power for 8 days. In the “somepeople-have-way-too-much-time-on-their-hands” department, Talk-Like-A-Pirate-Day is September 19th. Shiver me timbers, matey. September also holds the anniversary of one of the greatest tragedies in our nation’s history. On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked this great country of ours by flying planes into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. It is believed they intended to strike the White House if it were not for the brave Americans on flight 93 whose resting place is in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks that day. The date is now known as ‘Patriot Day.’ Again this year, the anniversary falls on a Tuesday. Take a moment that day to remember the fallen… and their families. Let us not forget…. Let us never forget! The first day of autumn is on Saturday, September 22nd. With the changing season comes the promise of cooler temperatures. According to Weather.com the average high in our neighborhood in September is 88°. The average low is 72°.

(CC) SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO THINK ABOUT
• Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there. • Actual headline on April 24, 2012: “World Peace is suspended for 7 games.” • Children: You spend the first 2 years of their life teaching them to walk and talk… and then the next 16 years telling them to sit down and be quiet. • Never use a big word where a diminutive one will suffice. • You are who you are when no one is looking.
GEORGETOWN COLONY I We hope that everyone had a very enjoyable and safe summer. Now that school is back in session, please be sure to drive slowly through the neighborhood, as our children will be walking to and from the bus stops. Also, please obey the speed limits while driving through the school zones and remember that cell phone use is banned within school limits. Accidents caused by texting or talking on the phone are avoidable. Please be extra cautious while driving and look out for the safety of our children. NO PHONE CALL OR TEXT MESSAGE IS WORTH INJURY TO, OR THE LIFE OF, A CHILD.
(GC1) LOST AND FOUND PETS
There have been many loose and lost pets in our neighborhood, so we are working on setting up a website in order to post lost and found pets. This will be a much more efficient way of notifying our neighbors of a lost or found pet rather than putting up signs. We hope to get this up and running by next month and will post the access information at the front of the subdivision. The first thing to do if you find a lost dog that does not have a tag, is to take it to any vet’s clinic or Petsmart and have it scanned for a micro chip. This is the fastest way to get the dog back to its owner. If it does not have a microchip, please look for signs to make sure the dog gets back to its rightful owner. A dog who is left to wander is subject to being hit by a car, abuse, or starving to death. Those of you who are dog owners, please be sure to keep a collar and tag on it at all times. Even if the dog is micro chipped, it is much easier to return the dog to you if it has your contact information on a tag.
(GC1) ALLIGATOR IN BAYOU
We have been informed that an alligator has been spotted in the bayou behind the subdivision. Animal Control has been called but they do not handle the removal of alligators, so we are looking at alternatives to secure its removal. Please stay away from walking around the bayou. Make sure to keep your pets leashed and not allow them to wander off. Unfortunately, several pets have gone missing and we fear that they may have been eaten by the alligator. Also, warn all children to stay out of the park and all areas in and around the bayou.

We plan on installing another set of cameras at the intersection of Ft. Sumter and Old Tybee Rd. to monitor traffic entering through the Charlestown Colony entrance. We hope to complete this within the next few months.

GEORGETOWN COLONY II (GCII) HOA ASSESSMENT DUES
Of the approximately 90 individually owned houses in the Georgetown Colony II section, we have 13 homes that have yet paid their Assessments along with prior years, costs totaling over several thousand dollars. These homes are relying on their neighbors to pick up the slack for them? Remember that your homeowner Assessment was due January 1st and began to accrue late fees and penalties after Jan. 31st. Please get with SCS Management (281-463-1777) to discuss a payment plan. Please remember that this money is used for repairs and improvements to our neighborhood.
(GCII) DEED RESTRICTIONS
We want to thank all of the homeowners in GCII who take the time and expense to keep their property maintained! It shows pride in your ownership and it keeps all of our property values up! Before doing home improvements, please submit an Architectural Review Form to the Board for approval prior beginning any exterior work. The forms may be obtained from SCS Management at www.schmngt. com or 281-463-1777.

(JC) NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
Jamestown will be celebrating National Night Out again this year. The observance falls on October 2nd in Texas this year, so put this day in October on your calendar. More details will be available via email, Facebook and signage closer in late September.
(JC) HOA ASSESSMENTS DUE
Of the approximately 400 houses in the 3 Jamestown sections, 7% have not yet paid their 2012 assessments - that’s at least 28 homeowners that are relying on their neighbors to pick up the slack for them. Remember that your homeowner assessment was due January 1st and began to accrue late fees & penalties after January 31st. You can either send a check to ACMP based on the 2012 statement sent to you or you can pay online at www.jamestowncolony.com (if you pay online, you are responsible for any service fees for your online payment). If you can’t pay the entire assessment at one time, contact ACMP at 281-855-9867 to arrange a payment plan. As long as you make such arrangements and stick to the payment plan, you will not be assessed penalties and late fees. Remember that your assessment is larger this year (and will be next year) till we get the new perimeter fence paid off.

(JC) GREEN TIPS
Don’t throw away those nub ends of candles or jar candles. Recycle them! 1. Use containers or storage bags for your candle scraps. Store similar scents &/or colors together and melt when you have enough to make another candle. An easy way to do this is to remove the wicks and metal wick ends and put your candle bits into recycled glass jars with lids. If you do it this way, you’ve already done most of the work and can go direct to Step 4. 2. You can use several types of heat sources to melt your candles, but the safest way is to use a pot of water. • To melt a candle that is already in a glass container, place the glass container into a pot of water on your stove burner. should reach no more than halfway up the glass sides. Heat the glass container in the water over a medium flame until the wax is pourable. You can also remove the candle from its container (or take candle ends), and place the wax leftovers in an old coffee or tin can to be heated. Be sure to use silicon gloves or good pot holders to protect yourself from burns. And remember wax splashes can give you 2nd or 3rd degree burns. • It can be dangerous to use a microwave to heat candle wax, but if you do use the microwave, be sure to remove the metal wick ends before nuking the wax (unless you like fireworks & fire alarms and buying new microwaves). Heat your wax in no more than 30-second increments to avoid wax fires. 3. Separate the scraps by color and/or scent. 4. Put the pieces over a heat source and melt them down. Once melted, if you haven’t already done so, remove all of the wicks and wick tabs from the melted wax. If there is a lot of debris still in the wax, you can filter it through a strainer. 5. Pour wax into clean jar and center the wick in the jar. You can buy wicking at Michael’s or other hobby/craft shops. 6. Allow the wax to harden and set before re-using your thrifty candles. Another frugal alternative to tossing out old candles is to make your own firestarters for your fireplace or fire or barbecue pit. To make firestarters, you will need empty cardboard egg cartons, dryer lint and old candles. Tuck the dryer lint into the egg cups of an old egg carton. Drip melted candle wax over the tops of the dryer lint, enough to cover the lint. It doesn’t have to be a thick layer, and you don’t have to cover it completely. To use your firestarters, simply break off an egg cup or two, light and put it in your fireplace.

(JC) EASY WAY TO REPORT STREET LIGHT OUTAGES
Instead of waiting for the CenterPoint Energy Business Office to open, report the burned out street lights while you’re thinking of it. Go to www. centerpointenergy.com/services/electricity/residential/reportastreetlightoutage and fill in the information. Remember, the HOA pays for these lights whether they’re burning or not, so you might as well have them burning.
YORKTOWN COLONY (YTC) NEW DATE FOR FALL GARAGE SALE:
Due to so many garage sales in the area on the same date, we have changed our Annual Garage sale to Saturday, September 8th. We have 2 annual Garage Sales a year and it’s time for our fall sale. We do get very good response because we advertise on Craig’s List and put signs out in the 3 entrances of our subdivision days in advance to the sale. The sale is advertised from 8 AM to 3 PM. Please remove any personal garage sale signs AFTER the sale. We prefer you only have sales at the time of our Annual Sales. It is a State of Texas law, if you have more than 2 garage sales per household, per year, it is considered a business and you must have a sales tax permit.
(YTC) PUMPKIN PATCH
Yorktown Colony will have a Pumpkin Patch in the park area for Yorktown residence on Saturday, October 27th. There will be pumpkins for the children to decorate, costume judging and snacks for all. Put the date on your calendar and more information will be in next month’s newsletter
(YTC) MAILBOX MAINTENANCE
Please be aware it is the homeowner’s responsibility to have your mail box in good repair. It is up to you to make any repairs to your mailbox. It should have your address # on the mailbox and the post should be straight up, painted and in “good shape.”

(YTC) NEW SECURITY IN YORKTOWN COLONY
After careful consideration, research and review, the Yorktown Colony HOA Board Members have approved a written request by homeowners to add Surveillance Cameras at each entry/exit area of the Yorktown Colony Subdivision. Each entry/exit area will have the following: 1-Wide Angle Day/Night IR Camera and 2-License Plate Recognition Cameras (LPRCs). The cameras are securely mounted on a 16-foot steel pole. With the use of Digital Video Recorders (DVRs), the cameras have 24-hour recording and remote monitoring capabilities. The purpose of the security camera system is to help deter crime. In addition, the Sheriff Deputies will have access to surveillance video and still pictures from the camera system to help deter and solve crimes in our subdivision. The camera system does not negate the homeowner’s security responsibilities. Your proactive and vigilant security efforts are vital in collectively reducing crime in our subdivision. Please continue to report all suspicious vehicles and suspicious persons to the Sheriff Department immediately. The surveillance cameras full operation will begin this month, September 2012 More information is coming soon.

In order to make our fundraiser as successful as possible, we are looking to the good neighbors of our Community for their support. There are many ways in which you can contribute to the Pink Tie Affair as either a sponsor or a donor. The Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization as defined by the InternaRevenue Code, Section 501(c) 3 and all qualified donations made to ZTA Foundation are tax-deductable, so please consider helping us make a difference in the lives of women everywhere. The Pink Tie Affair fundraising event, through the ZTA Foundation, supports breast cancer education and awareness, the Komen Race for the Cure® Survivor program, scholarships, educational programming and leadership development. Through our affiliations with The Susan G. Komen Foundation, Yoplait, The NFL and Self Magazine, the ZTA Foundation has donated millions of dollars to this worthy cause. As one of the leading causes of death in women, breast cancer affects us all. We had a great turnout for last year’s first annual, raising $7000 toward our cause and anticipate an even better 2012. If you are interested in purchasing tickets or other ways of contributing to the event, please contact Natalie Taylor at daisemail@comcast.net or www.cypresszta.com, our website. We hope to have your support and to see you there!

Mildred’s Umbrella Theater Company 2012-2013 Season Kimberly Akimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, November 29-December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

CFISD GLOBAL VOLUNTEERS Cy Fair ISD continues to be known for its winning combination of district administration, teachers, school staff, parents, community partners and volunteers, each contributing to the success of CFISD students and schools, with volunteers being a huge factor in this equation. Many schools do not have the volunteer base to fill the needs of students and staff; fortunately, CFISD Global Volunteers are willing to reach out, lend a helping hand and get the job done. Global Volunteer opportunities throughout the year are widespread, ranging from vision and hearing screening, mentoring, tutoring, Junior Achievement and other instructional presentations. Whatever your talent may be, there is a niche for you. If you are not the parent, legal guardian or grandparent of a student enrolled in the school at which you would like to volunteer, State law requires certain procedures in order the ensure the safety of all students. These steps are encompassed by the CFISD Global Volunteer program. 1. Visit www.cfisd.net/dept2/pie/globalvol_forms 2. Print “Background Check” and “Global Volunteer Application” 3. Complete and return to: Pam Scott Partners In Education Director Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D. 8877 Barker Cypress Road, Suite 1118 Cypress, Texas 77433 Fax: 281-894-3959 Each individual and every hour volunteered impacts the life of a child. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through September. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
