September 2012

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

National Night Out is October 2, 2012. National night out is a program to promote neighbor spirit and police community partnership for a safer place to live. We encourage you to plan a cook out or a neighborhood activity on your street. Its an opportunity to meet your neighbors and discuss ways you can look out for each other to help prevent criminal activity in your neighborhood.

LAKE SPRINKLER SYSTEM

The Copper Village Community Association Board of Directors along with along with a number of our service contractors are making progress in bringing the lake area irrigation system back to functionality. We began this project earlier this year and once underway found there were multiple causes for the sprinkler system failure, including faulty pump in the lake (from which the water is drawn), inoperative electrical pump motor, broken sprinkler heads and faulty wiring. Most of those failures have now been resolved. We are still trying to find out why some of the irrigation zones are not operating as they should. Our landscaping contractor, ALPC, is actively troubleshooting and repairing damaged irrigation equipment and we hope to have the system fully functional in the coming weeks. ALPC has been directed by the Board to look for faults in other common area sprinkler systems in Copper Village so that we can take appropriate actions to get those systems functional again. If you know of any common areas in which the sprinkler systems have stopped working, please notify your Board of Directors or AMI.

A NEW LOOK

The Board of Directors has been working with the AMI Information Technology group to update our website with hopefully a more user friendly approach to finding information. In early July, we began conducting final reviews of the proposed website content and once those details are finalized AMI IT will incorporate and migrate the new look to our website for use by all CV residents. We expect the new website should be fully functional by the time you read this in the newsletter.

YOUR HOA BOARD AT WORK

The broken foot platform and the umbrella holders on the lifeguard stand at the swimming pool have been repaired. Thanks to Board members Dave Tyree and Dave Hoeppner for the doing the work themselves and saving the Board money. Dave Tyree and Dave Hoeppner have restrapped the pool chairs that were broken. Pat and Marian Burke cleaned, replanted and mulched the flowerbeds next to the baby pool area. Several sections of iron rod fence around the pool that had corroded were replaced. Dave Hoeppner cleared the debris around the fenced area that contains the lake pump and electrical panels for the irrigation system. A shed has been purchased to cover the panel to protect them from vandalism and the weather. A request has been made for the walking path around the lake to be repaired where the rains have washed out and made large ruts. A request for a new garbage container for the small park on East Copper Village has been submitted. The new fence along Queenston and the park area on the North side of East Copper Village Dr. has been stained.

We are not stopping there! Look for some landscaping improvements in the pool and common areas, repair of electronic locks at the pool entrance, removal of dead trees in the subdivision and a number of other maintenance and improvement projects which we hope will make our neighborhood a much nicer place to live. If you have ideas on things in the neighborhood, which need attention, please communicate those to the Board of Directors for consideration. We value your input.

GREEN TIP

Lawn care experts agree that using a mulching lawnmower that leaves mulched clippings on the grass contribute to healthier soil and lessens the amount of water needed to keep the grass in good condition. It also keeps less waste material going out of the subdivision.

PLEASE HELP DO YOUR PART

Each week AMI and CV Deed Restriction/ARC Committee conduct an inspection of the neighborhood to identify where deed restriction violations may exist. If you receive a notice, please take action to remedy the issue as soon as possible. Right now our most common issue is lawn maintenance. Please help by ensuring lawns are regularly mowed and edged. This small effort keeps our community looking top-notch and the overall community appearance affects everyone’s property values. If you have vegetation growing on or near your fence and that fence faces a common area or roadway, please ensure that vegetation is trimmed back and does not grow through, over or under the fence. This will ensure a uniform and attractive appearance for our subdivision when seen from affected streets and walkways. Keeping the vegetation out of fencing also helps to get the maximum life out of the fencing materials.

GARBAGE SERVICE ISSUES

The Copper Village Board of Directors has received a number of calls and emails from homeowners identifying issues with neighborhood garbage service. These issues range from missed pick-ups to damaged garbage cans, spilled trash and everything in between.

September 2012

Copper Village

Unfortunately, the CV Board of Directors has little to no authority in these matters. If any homeowner has an issue with garbage service, they should call Waste Management direct at 713-695-4055 to voice your complaint and request corrective action.

NEIGHBORHOOD SECURITY

Over the past months the Copper Village Board of Directors and Association Management, Inc. (AMI) have received calls reporting break-ins and vandalism in the neighborhood. If you see a crime in progress, call 9-1-1. Please direct all non-emergency calls first and foremost to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office: 713-221-6000. On-line reporting of some crimes can be accomplished through the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Citizens Online Police Reporting System at www.hcso.hctx.net. The Copper Village Board of Directors and AMI appreciate your notifying us of criminal activity in the subdivision, but please call Harris County Sheriff’s Office, file a report and let’s get these criminals out of our neighborhood.

LEASH LAWS

Harris County animal control regulations state: A. “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat or to allow any dog or cat to become a stray. B. The custodian of every dog or cat is responsible for any behavior of a dog or cat under the provisions of these Regulations.” Restraint is defined as “The control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question; or 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle; or

Copper Village

3. When it is on the premises of the custodian and the animal does not have access to a sidewalk or street.” Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by may be very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Please help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also protect the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact: Harris County Animal Control: 281-999-3191 Also, please be responsible pet owners and pick up after your pets in order to keep our sidewalks, paths, lawns and park areas a place we can enjoy without worrying about where we step or what we step on.

TRASH REMINDER

On non-trash days, the garbage cans and waste management containers are to be placed out of visual sight (inside your garage or behind your fence). If you do not follow this procedure, you are in violation of Copper Village deed restrictions. Please remember that our community receives garage-door pickup for trash – there is no need to drag your garbage cans to the curb! Simply place your trash by your garage door and Waste Management will do the rest. Bulky items (yard trimmings, etc.) and recycling still need to be placed at the curb. Please leave the sidewalks unobstructed for the pedestrians in our community.

HAVE YOU RETURNED YOUR IRIS REGISTRATION FORM?

If not, what are you waiting for? The Immediate Response Information System (IRIS) will be used to send reminders to residents of upcoming community events as well as distribute emergency information such as boil water notices, evacuation information or other public safety issues. Thus far approximately 50% of Copper Village residents have returned the registration form. All residents are encouraged to register. If you’ve misplaced your form, please contact Trinh Basarabescu (713-984-7217) at AMI.

COPPER VILLAGE COMMUNITY DECAL

The Board of Directors for the Copper Village Homeowners Association recently implemented a community decal system to identify vehicles of owners within the community. All residents of Copper Village are strongly recommended to have a community decal visible on the front passenger side windshield of every vehicle that is permanently kept at their residence. Two decals have been mailed to each resident. The purpose of this program is to better identify who should and should not be in the neighborhood. All vehicles without decals may be stopped by the Neighborhood Watch Team or reported to the police if suspicious activity is witnessed. We urge all residents to obtain a decal and display it on their windshield.

Harris County law and your Governing Documents require that when your pet is outside the confines of your property, it must be leashed and under the direct supervision of a responsible person. Should your pet need to relieve itself, please be prepared to immediately clean up after it. All persons walking dogs within Copper Village should carry some means to pick up what their pet leaves behind. This includes picking up from sidewalks, parking areas, parks and other areas where your neighbors enjoy walking. Please do not allow your dog to relieve itself on your neighbor’s lawn. This can be very upsetting to homeowners.

In addition, homeowners are responsible for maintaining sidewalks along their property. Homeowners could be held liable for any injury that occurs as a result of overhanging limbs or sidewalk deterioration.

The scholarship fund awards a $20,000 scholarship annually. The scholarship is administered by the CyFair Educational Foundation. The first scholarship was awarded in May 2008 to Eric’s Cy-Falls High School classmate and teammate Blake Billings. Blake started a new tradition by presenting Eric and Ana Bassett with the tassel he received at graduation from Texas A&M University. For more information about donating or endowed scholarships contact Marie Holmes at marie@thecfef.org or visit www.thecfef.org .

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER PROVIDES HUNDREDS OF BOOKS FOR CFISD STUDENTS

The Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) used a book drive in its production of Seussical to help support Cy-Fair ISD Title I Schools. HFAC students, parents and patrons donated over 400 books valued in excess of $1,500 for CFISD to give to third, fourth and fifth graders at a CFISD camp for homeless and at risk students. In addition, HFAC raised $400 that was used to purchase new books for students at Milsap Elementary School. Title I is a federally funded program designed to reinforce the basic and advanced skills of students who are struggling in school. Title I is part of the No Child Left Behind Act passed by Congress in 2002. A school is selected as a Title I school on the basis of the number of families within its boundaries who are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. “We are extremely grateful that we have partners in our community that support us in such a generous way,” said Nathaniel Broussard, CFISD Camp Coordinator. “Community partners are a fundamental asset to the complete educational process.”

Higher Education SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL LITERACY MONTH

Millions of people have difficulty reading. That’s because, despite what many people think, literacy issues are not just relegated to children and young adults. To improve literacy in America, we must consider readers of all ages and backgrounds. Here are some tips to help you improve and encourage reading and literacy. Here’s How: 1. Read books every day and let people see you do it. You may be a role model (to your child, your niece or nephew or some other individual in your family or circle of acquaintances). 2. Get involved with your local library. Many libraries offer literacy programs, which encourage reading in your community. See what you can do to help. 3. Talk about reading. Ask questions about what the individuals in your life are reading.

MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATER COMPANY 2012-2013 SEASON

Kimberly AKimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, November 29-December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)

We are a ladies daytime chorus with approximately 30 members. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 30 years. We sing old favorites and contemporary tunes arranged in the barbershop style. The four parts creating the barbershop sound are Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass. We rehearse Friday mornings from 10:30 Am to 12:30 Pm at the Treemont Retirement Center located at 2501 Westerland, off Westheimer and Gessner. We love to have visitors and even more when you decide to join our chorus. For additional information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or decibelle@comcast.net (email). We perform two types of shows each year. Currently we are singing a selection of patriotic songs, Johnny mathis’ “Chances Are,” Perry Como’s “Hot Diggity Dog” and other fun tunes. You’ll be singing along with us before you know it. Our Christmas show includes old favorites, but also includes new fun tunes with props, narratives and choreography. We’ll begin preparing that program in october and book performances for the first two weeks in December. Come visit any Friday and see how much fun you can have with us.

GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CORNERS SERVICE UNIT

Anne Bates with daughters Jessica and Kristina.

34

Girls and adults in the Copper Corners Service unit have been having a busy summer! Many of our scouts have been attending Council resident, day and twilight camps. Some have been campers, some program aides and others have been camp counselors or volunteers. Council camps always have lots of interesting sessions for all ages and activities range from fishing (catch and release) to fencing and from archery to astronomy. That’s not counting sailing, canoeing, swimming and horseback riding. And where else do you have crazy hat days and learn all those camp songs?

The Bates family (mom Anne and daughters Jessica and Kristina) joined hundreds of other Girl Scouts from around San Jacinto Council for Scout Day with the Astros on July 29th. They all walked around the field in a parade and joined in several hours of fun activities. To top it all off, the Astros won! Kristina and Jessica also volunteered at the Reliant Center Dog Show on July 21st. They filled in so other volunteers could take breaks, walked dogs and helped out in the sales area. The girls also spent time talking to prospective “adoptive parents” of rescue dogs and described the day as a “great experience.” Believe In Girls? Want to find out more about activities in San Jacinto Council? The B.I.G. event on Saturday, September 29th at the George Brown Convention Center is one you won’t want to miss! The event runs from 10 AM to 4 PM. To purchase tickets, see schedules and find out all the latest event news, go to www.gssjc. org/100th/the-big-event. Copper Corners will be starting off the new school year with “Rally Days.” That is when we recruit new leaders and form new troops. Our scheduled Rally Days, times and locations are: Lowery Elementary - September 13th at 7 PM Fiest Elementary - September 18th at 7 PM Birkes Elementary - September 19th at 7 PM For more information, please contact Debra Rieke at 281-856-0118 or Felicia Ferguson, 347-330-7833; (skye2rayne@yahoo.com). Girl Scouting is open to all girls between the ages of 5 (must be in kindergarten) and 18. Girls may join at any level and no prior Girl Scouting experience is required. Don’t forget that many of our most exciting opportunities are available for older girls! If you are over 18, we are always in need of leaders! Girl Scout leaders are as varied as our membership and have all kinds of different skills and interests. You need a background check and a small amount of training to get started, but lots of training is available. Give us a call to find out more. The council website is www.gssjc.org Copper Corners serves girls in the residence areas for Birkes, Fiest and Lowery Elementary schools, Aragon and Libay Middle schools and the corresponding high schools. Home schoolers and private school students are always welcome. Girl Scouting has been around for 100 years. A lot of things have changed since 1912, but Girl Scouting is still building girls of courage, confidence and character!

Eagle Scout hopeful Braely Pace braved rising floodwaters as he spearheaded the work of 17 volunteers to make two playgrounds safer for his preschool alma mater.

Longwood Boy Scout Gives Back to Former School Sixteen-year-old Longwood resident Braely Pace was determined to press forward with his Eagle Scout project on the morning of Friday, July 13th. Pace, a member of Boy Scout Troop #84 sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, had spent weeks organizing donations and recruiting 17 volunteers to layer a protective safety cushion of mulch onto two playgrounds owned by The Woods Private School. The plan had come off with only one hitch - both playgrounds were saturated with rain and the playground located at 15002 Lakewood Forest Drive sat next to an overflowing tributary of Cypress Creek, which had already reached flood stage and was continuing to rise. Despite the floodwaters, Pace and Chad Boase, an assistant director at the school, decided it was safe to move ahead with the muchneeded project. Pace joked to Boase, “No one here is afraid to get wet or muddy!” Pace pitched his Eagle project idea to Phillip Sheppard of Living Earth Technology Company, who generously agreed to donate 30 cubic yards of mulch. Pace recruited his hardworking, mostly teenage volunteers from his own congregation, the Longwood Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Pace is no stranger to hard work, growing up on a 500-acre Utah family farm, where he bailed and hauled alfalfa by hand. He returns every summer to help out. This work ethic has been reinforced during his eight years in Scouting, which fosters self-reliance, leadership and hard work, culminating in the Eagle Project.

We spend our time working on merit badges, planning for our monthly camp outs and having fun!! We have had a wonderful summer this year! Our older boys, 14 and up, went on a High Adventure camping trip to Alaska! While they were there they were able to go white water rafting, hiking and even see and learn about an Alaskan dog sled team! The younger Scouts, 13 and under, had a great time at Camp Constantin on Possum Kingdom Lake. They were able to work on several merit badges, camp in a lake front campsite, build their own raft for a competition and participate in a Troop Shoot! We are gearing up for the new School year and will be taking our September camp out to Guadalupe River State Park. Now is the perfect time to join us and get started on this fabulous journey! “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through September. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
