Meet your HOA president… Dennis Brewer

September 2012

“I am married to my high school sweetheart, Dawn. We have two sons, a daughter-in-law and two grandchildren. Our oldest son, Brian, currently lives in Louisiana with his family, but we hope that they will move to Cypress in the next few years. Our youngest son, Andrew, is a senior at Cy-Woods. If you live in the Estates, you may have seen us walking our dog around the neighborhood. We moved to Cypress Mill Estates from Louisiana in 2009, after nine months of commuting every week for work. This was our eighth move in 24 years of marriage. We have lived in Louisiana, California, Oklahoma and now Texas. My brother lives in Cypress and my sister lives in Jersey Village, so we had a pretty good idea that if we ever moved to the Houston area that we wanted to move to Cypress. I have had a variety of jobs over the years including: US Marine, Police Officer, European Sales Director, Heat Treater/Turbine Bolting tech and IT Consultant. I now work as a Telecommunications Engineer at BP. I chose to run for the HOA board because I feel it is important to give back to the community. I served my first year as Secretary and became President after our last election. I know that Homeowner Associations tend to get a bad name in the press for enforcing restrictions that residents agreed to live by when they purchased their house, but HOAs are really more than that. As a board member, I have fiduciary responsibility to manage the HOA finances, to help make community improvements and to help homeowners maintain or increase the value of their property. We have a really good Board and we really try to be reasonable about every decision we make. While that does mean collecting dues and enforcing deed restrictions, it is also about helping our friends and neighbors.”

Household items to check

• Due to the extreme heat and rain, please check the outside of your chimneys for mold and rotten siding. • Check your roof for any loose or misshapen shingles; there could be a leak. • Be cautious when applying grass/weed killer around your perimeter fence; you may be killing plants in your neighbor’s yard.

Deed restriction violations

FYI, following is an excerpt from the document governing Cypress Mill Deed Restrictions:

Home Security

• Pools will be closed September 3, 2012. • Community garage sale: Saturday, October 13, 2012. • Visit with Santa: December 15, 2012 • HOA meetings are held on the 4th Wednesday of every month in the recreation center on Mills Park Lane at 7 pm. Homeowners are welcome to attend. There will be a drawing for a gift certificate at each meeting. The July winner of a gift certificate to Gringo’s Restaurant was Arline Jenson.

Cypress Mill

$

There were 131 deed restriction violations; 39 lawn maintenance, 22 trash/ recycling containers left in driveways; 25 regarding paint/repair chimney, siding repair, rotten wood replacement and mildew.

There appears to have been at least 2 home break-ins during July. Please make sure doors are kept locked and garage doors are closed, especially if you are in your back yard or indoors. If you plan to be away from your house after dark, consider installing a timer on one of your lamps that will be seen from the street. Also, if you have a side or back gate, think about keeping it locked.

Halloween Safety Tips …. Remember …. Safety first!!

Remember getting all dressed in your costume to go trick or treating? To keep it fun, everyone needs to stay safe. Here are 13 helpful tips to make sure your kids have a healthy and happy Halloween. • Have adult supervision. Accompany your kids if you don’t think they’re old enough to trick-or-treat on their own. • There is safety in numbers. If they’re old enough to trick-or-treat without an adult, tell your kids to stay in a group. • Map out your plan. Designate a route before your kids begin trick-or-treating and make sure they stick to it.

• Take the long way ‘round. Have your kids trick-or-treat in areas where there are a lot of people around. They should also avoid taking short-cuts through alleys and parking lots. • Try trick-or-treat-friendly homes. Ensure your kids only visit houses with lights on. And, you might also suggest the houses they visit have some sort of Halloween decoration on the porch. • Stay outside. Make sure your kids don’t go inside someone’s house. They can get their candy from the porch. • Remain visible. Dress your kids in a bright costume so others can see them. If their costume is dark, have your kids wear reflective strips or carry a glow stick or flashlight. • Remember, shorter = safer. Goes without saying but just in case you forget, ensure your kids’ costumes aren’t so long that they can trip over them. • Don’t cover the face. Instead of masks, have your kids wear make-up so they can see better. • Quality-check treats. Check your kids’ candy before they eat it. Throw out any candy that is not in its original wrapper or looks like it has been tampered with. • Say “no” to strangers. Tell your kids to never accept a ride or go anywhere with a stranger. • Obey the law. Encourage your kids to follow all the regular rules for walking around. That includes looking both ways before crossing, obeying all traffic laws and using cross walks and crossing lights where available. • Have a great time! Finally, make sure your kids have tons of fun and get lots and lots of candy.

Don’t forget your pets on Halloween

Halloween can be fun and festive for people, but for pets it can also be dangerous. Here are some tips from the AVMA to help you ensure that your pet has a happy and safe Halloween... • Don’t leave your pet outside unattended on Halloween (or on the days preceding or following this holiday). Halloween pranks committed against pets can be vicious and black cats are particularly at risk. • Halloween treats are for people, not pets. Candy wrappers and lollipop sticks can be hazardous if swallowed and chocolate can be poisonous for some types of pets. • Keep pumpkins out of reach of curious noses and paws. Pets may knock over a lit pumpkin and cause a fire. •Despite how much fun it is for people, many pets don’t enjoy getting dressed up for Halloween. If you do dress your pet, be sure that its costume doesn’t interfere with the pet’s ability to breathe, see, hear, move or bark. • Consider keeping your pet in a separate room, away from the door when trick-or-treaters arrive. Strange people in even stranger clothes can frighten some pets. • When you do answer the door for visitors, make sure that your pet doesn’t suddenly head for the great outdoors. In case your pet does escape, make

September 2012

sure that it is wearing proper identification. Pets with identification are much more likely to be returned to their owners. • For more information and tips about holiday safety for pets, call or visit your family veterinarian. Remember, your veterinarian is your very best source for advice on keeping your pet safe, healthy and happy!

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s.

• Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

CY-WOODS KEY CLUB

As the threshold of the next school year approaches, it is easy to become dismayed with the depletion of summer break. But despite this tendency, we at Cypress Woods Key Club utilize this time to build anticipation for the upcoming year. Though we have remained active throughout the summer through volunteering at various food banks, triathlons and academies - we have to acknowledge the heightened club vigor that comes with the school year. We anticipate the certain aspects that come with a highly active club such as more members, more socials and more service opportunities. Such factors facilitate the success of the club and our strides towards the betterment of our community. Events like those at Cypress Assistance Ministries (CAM), the Houston Food Bank and many other organizations allow members to effectively contribute their time and service. Then social events like the lock-in allow said members to socialize and celebrate the hard work they have contributed to their community and the world as a whole through service and donation. With such features ahead of us it is easy to see why, as key clubbers, we are anticipating them whole-heartedly. We would love to assist at your event as well! From garage sales to neighborhood cleanups, we will be there to help. If you require any help within your community, feel free to contact us at cywoodskeyclub@gmail. com (email).
