FALL SWIM TRAINING PROGRAM OPENS AT LOEN
The Swim Team’s Fall Swim Program started this week with practices at Lakes on Eldridge North. It’s a training and conditioning program for intermediate and experienced swimmers. There may still be available spaces so check our website for more information: www.loedolphins.org Divisional and Invitational swim meets were hard fought, competing against the much bigger teams we had to face this year since we moved up one level after winning the division last year. We had many team records broken by our swimmers. Details are available online at our website www.loedolphins.org, click on “Viewing Results” under “Swim Meet Info” for instructions. The outgoing Swim Team Board wants to thank our great volunteers, many of whom went above and beyond to help, our dedicated coaches, who brought out the best in each and every swimmer and the residents of LOE who supported us and were gracious hosts for our practices and meets. The new Swim Team Board is already hard at work to plan a successful season for next year. You can check our website www.loedolphins.org in January 2013 for the latest information and look for updated LOE Swim Team News in February’s newsletter.
PLAY A STRING INSTRUMENT?
A LOE resident, who plays violin and viola, is looking for other string players to play quartet music, on a recreational level. Email: echavlik@earthlink.net or call Ellen at 281-741-1781.
LAKES ON ELDRIDGE BIBLE STUDY GROUP
The Lakes on Eldridge Bible Study will resume meeting every Tuesday morning at the Beach Club on September 11, 2012. The New study by Lenya Heitzig and Penny Rose, Live Abundantly, a Fresh Life Series by David C. Cook, begins our fall meetings. As we dig into the book of Ephesians we shall unearth the greatest treasure of life - a gift “exceedingly abundantly above” whatever you could possibly ask for. This twelveweek study for women takes only 20 minutes a day and with each lesson, we hope to develop a deeper intimacy with God and a deeper understanding of Bible truths. If you would like to join us or would like additional information, please contact Stephanie at mrstjl10179@gmail.com . We meet every Tuesday from 9:15 AM until 11:30 AM for fellowship, praise, study and prayer. On the first Tuesday of each month we go out for lunch after our meeting. The study guides cost $13 and will be available for purchase at the first meeting or you can contact Stephanie and she will get one for you before the meetings begin. We hope you will want to come and grow in your faith and share fellowship with a great bunch of Christian ladies.

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER
Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

The Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) used a book drive in its production of Seussical to help support Cy-Fair ISD Title I Schools. HFAC students, parents and patrons donated over 400 books valued in excess of $1,500 for CFISD to give to third, fourth and fifth graders at a CFISD camp for homeless and at risk students. In addition, HFAC raised $400 that was used to purchase new books for students at Milsap Elementary School. Title I is a federally funded program designed to reinforce the basic and advanced skills of students who are struggling in school. Title I is part of the No Child Left Behind Act passed by Congress in 2002. A school is selected as a Title I school on the basis of the number of families within its boundaries who are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. “We are extremely grateful that we have partners in our community that support us in such a generous way,” said Nathaniel Broussard, CFISD Camp Coordinator. “Community partners are a fundamental asset to the complete educational process.”

CFISD GLOBAL VOLUNTEERS
Cy Fair ISD continues to be known for its winning combination of district administration, teachers, school staff, parents, community partners and volunteers, each contributing to the success of CFISD students and schools, with volunteers being a huge factor in this equation. Many schools do not have the volunteer base to fill the needs of students and staff; fortunately, CFISD Global Volunteers are willing to reach out, lend a helping hand and get the job done. Global Volunteer opportunities throughout the year are widespread, ranging from vision and hearing screening, mentoring, tutoring, Junior Achievement and other instructional presentations. Whatever your talent may be, there is a niche for you. If you are not the parent, legal guardian or grandparent of a student enrolled in the school at which you would like to volunteer, State law requires certain procedures in order the ensure the safety of all students. These steps are encompassed by the CFISD Global Volunteer program. 1. Visit www.cfisd.net/dept2/pie/globalvol_forms 2. Print “Background Check” and “Global Volunteer Application” 3. Complete and return to: Pam Scott Partners In Education Director Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D. 8877 Barker Cypress Road, Suite 1118 Cypress, Texas 77433 Fax: 281-894-3959 Each individual and every hour volunteered impacts the life of a child. We value your service to our district. If you have any questions, please contact the Partners in Education office at 281-894-3950 or e-mail Pam Scott, director at pamela. scott@cfisd.net.

Experience Life Change CY-CHRISTIAN CHEERLEADERS RECOGNIZED AT CHEER CAMP
This Weekend at True Life Fellowship
Middle school and varsity cheerleaders from Cypress Christian School attended the Fellowship of Christian Cheerleaders Cheer Camp held at Houston Baptist University. The squads spent four days growing in Christ and in their cheerleading skills. While there, they not only learned new cheers and stunts, but also focused on how to use their talents and works for the glory of God. The girls were honored with the following awards while at camp: (1) Varsity Cheerleaders placed second in the Camp Championship with their all-music routine and (2) Both teams were recognized by the camp staff and director for their daily and consistent determination as well as their positive attitudes. They left camp excited and ready to promote “Warrior Spirit.”

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through September. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
