HEARTHSTONE REMINDERS
September 2012
Realizing we may be “preaching to the choir,” we wanted to get these reminders out as a means of spreading the word. Thanks to the majority who continue to keep Hearthstone a pleasant and friendly place to live. We have been asked to point out that all the trash in front of homes during the weekend looks terrible! Weekends are when most people are home, sometimes with visitors and it looks “trashy” when you see all this debris sitting out. Trash put out for Tuesday pickup should not go out until late Monday evening or Tuesday morning. The same goes for Friday. Nothing should be put out before Thursday evening or Friday morning. If you use a lawn service, they should not leave grass clippings or other yard debris at the curb unless it is within the prescribed timeframe. If necessary, one option is to have them take the debris with them for proper disposal, even though it may cost a few extra dollars. While we are “talking trash,” many people have become lax about where they store their trash cans. They should never be in view from the street except on trash days. That means storing them in the garage or behind a fence, not on the side of the house, behind a bush, etc. It really does make a big difference in the overall appearance of Hearthstone. It is important to remember that nothing but storm water should go down storm drains. Don’t permit lawn services or anyone else to blow grass, leaves or other debris into the storm inlets. All that kind of material, even if each amount is small, combines to inhibit the free flow of storm water. Likewise, the trash and yard debris mentioned above can contribute to street flooding if it blocks free flow of water. On another subject, everyone walking a dog is responsible for picking up any “deposits” made by their pets. The sidewalk to the park and the track around the park, both have lots of droppings, as do the areas around both. Don’t think that any common area can be used as a pet waste station. It is not fair to other walkers (with or without dogs) and is frankly disgusting. Keep in mind that Harris County, as well as Hearthstone, requires that dogs be on a leash whenever they are off their owner’s property. When you have a dog out without a leash, even if you think it is under “voice control,” you are breaking the law and run the risk of an unfortunate altercation with another animal or human. You are also less likely to fulfill your obligation of picking up after the dog.

Please visit the association’s website. With a more attractive, easy to use design, the site contains a lot of useful information, including HOA news, quick reference numbers, free classifieds and a library of association forms and documents. If you think of anything you would like added, please let us know. The only thing that has not changed is the address. It is still at www.hearthstonehoa.org.

Too often, we see underage drivers operating golf carts on the streets, sometimes in careless ways and we don’t want to see them (or anyone else) injured. GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER
Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up.

- Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

CFISD GLOBAL VOLUNTEERS
Cy Fair ISD continues to be known for its winning combination of district administration, teachers, school staff, parents, community partners and volunteers, each contributing to the success of CFISD students and schools, with volunteers being a huge factor in this equation. Many schools do not have the volunteer base to fill the needs of students and staff; fortunately, CFISD Global Volunteers are willing to reach out, lend a helping hand and get the job done. Global Volunteer opportunities throughout the year are widespread, ranging from vision and hearing screening, mentoring, tutoring, Junior Achievement and other instructional presentations. Whatever your talent may be, there is a niche for you. If you are not the parent, legal guardian or grandparent of a student enrolled in the school at which you would like to volunteer, State law requires certain procedures in order the ensure the safety of all students. These steps are encompassed by the CFISD Global Volunteer program. 1. Visit www.cfisd.net/dept2/pie/globalvol_forms 2. Print “Background Check” and “Global Volunteer Application” 3. Complete and return to: Pam Scott, Partners In Education Director, Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D., 8877 Barker Cypress Road, Suite 1118, Cypress, Texas 77433, Fax: 281-894-3959 Each individual and every hour volunteered impacts the life of a child. We value your service to our district. If you have any questions, please contact the Partners in Education office at 281-894-3950 or e-mail Pam Scott, director at pamela.scott@cfisd.net .

Mildred’s Umbrella Theater Company 2012-2013 Season
Kimberly Akimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, November 29-December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David LindsayAbaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

We perform two types of shows each year. Currently we are singing a selection of patriotic songs, Johnny Mathis’ “Chances Are,” Perry Como’s “Hot Diggity Dog” and other fun tunes. You’ll be singing along with us before you know it. Our Christmas show includes old favorites, but also includes new fun tunes with props, narratives and choreography. We’ll begin preparing that program in October and book performances for the first two weeks in December. Come visit any Friday and see how much fun you can have with us.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through September. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
