Grandparent’s Day
September 2012
This day has a threefold purpose: • To honor grandparents • To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children. • To help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer. The impetus for a National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide. President Jimmy Carter, in 1978, proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. As Grandparents Day approaches, help children and/or grandchildren to identify and date all photos in old family albums. Many happy memories can be derived from this. Everyone is a grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this day - a time to discover one’s roots and learn patience, understanding and appreciation for the elderly. Many times, only grandparents have answers to questions about family histories. When this information is passed down to the grandchildren, everyone can be assured of his heritage being preserved. Most important, Grandparents Day can signify a loving spirit that lives within us throughout the year, a spirit of love and respect for our elders. Grandparents Day is the perfect time to enhance communication between the generations. There are many, many elderly who are not fortunate enough to have family nearby. The need is increasing every day to fill the void of their loneliness. In every neighborhood, there are elderly who would love an opportunity to be a Foster Grandparent. Parents, churches, schools and senior organizations, help children to adopt a grandparent! Source: www.grandparents-day.com
SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL LITERACY MONTH
Millions of people have difficulty reading. That’s because, despite what many people think, literacy issues are not just relegated to children and young adults. To improve literacy in America, we must consider readers of all ages and backgrounds. Here are some tips to help you improve and encourage reading and literacy. Here’s How: 1. Read books every day and let people see you do it. You may be a role model (to your child, your niece or nephew or some other individual in your family or circle of acquaintances). 2. Get involved with your local library. Many libraries offer literacy programs, which encourage reading in your community. See what you can do to help. 3. Talk about reading. Ask questions about what the individuals in your life are reading.

NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
SEPTEMBER 15TH - OCTOBER 15TH
Each year, from September 15th to October 15th, the United States celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month to recognize the economic, cultural and social contributions of the more than 44.3 million Latinos residing in the U.S. The dates of Hispanic Heritage Month were selected to include the Independence Day celebrations of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico and Chile and to incorporate October 12th, Día de la Raza, a holiday celebrated throughout Latin America to observe the colonization, exploration and multicultural heritage of the Americas. How to celebrate: • Visit a museum or gallery that has a Hispanic Heritage Month-related exhibit. You might learn about Hispanic artists, musicians or scientists who contributed to Hispanic culture around the world. • Go to your neighborhood bookstore or library to hear a lecture about Hispanic history. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by learning about any one of the 21 countries represented by Hispanic society. • Attend a Hispanic dance performance or a Latin music concert. Take in the rhythm of the music or watch dancers move to the Latin beat. Or take dance lessons yourself, such as a salsa-dancing lesson. Ask ahead to find out whether or not you will need a partner for the class. • Watch a film in Spanish (with or without subtitles), see a play or musical related to a Hispanic tradition or see a performance put on by Hispanic Americans. If you don’t speak Spanish, learning a few words could open up a whole new world to you. • Volunteer for a Hispanic-related club such as a Mexican cooking club, Spanish literature group or Puerto Rican singles club. Begin writing for a publication written in Spanish or teach ESL. Whatever you choose, get involved in your community as a way to celebrate Hispanic heritage.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE
Benefiting Cypress Assistance Ministries
Please report any street light outage to Centerpoint. Repairs can take up to 3 weeks to be repaired, but the most recent request we made took only 2 days! It is imperative that residents participate in reporting outages, as there is no formal nighttime inspection done by management or Centerpoint. It’s simple, just go to www.centerpointenergy.com/outage and fill in the required information. You’ll need the 6 digit number located at the base of the light pole and an approximate address/location of the outage. You may also report it by dialing 713-207-2222.

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER
Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive

CFISD GLOBAL VOLUNTEERS
Cy Fair ISD continues to be known for its winning combination of district administration, teachers, school staff, parents, community partners and volunteers, each contributing to the success of CFISD students and schools, with volunteers being a huge factor in this equation. Many schools do not have the volunteer base to fill the needs of students and staff; fortunately, CFISD Global Volunteers are willing to reach out, lend a helping hand and get the job done. Global Volunteer opportunities throughout the year are widespread, ranging from vision and hearing screening, mentoring, tutoring, Junior Achievement and other instructional presentations. Whatever your talent may be, there is a niche for you.

Scouts GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CORNERS SERVICE UNIT
Girls and adults in the Copper Corners Service unit have been having a busy summer! Many of our scouts have been attending Council resident, day and twilight camps. Some have been campers, some program aides and others have been camp counselors or volunteers. Council camps always have lots of interesting sessions for all ages and activities range from fishing (catch and release) to fencing and from archery to astronomy. That’s not counting sailing, canoeing, swimming and horseback riding. And where else do you have crazy hat days and learn all those camp songs? The Bates family (mom Anne and daughters Jessica and Kristina) joined

hundreds of other Girl Scouts from around San Jacinto Council for Scout Day with the Astros on July 29th. They all walked around the field in a parade and joined in several hours of fun activities. To top it all off, the Astros won! Kristina and Jessica also volunteered at the Reliant Center Dog Show on July 21st. They filled in so other volunteers could take breaks, walked dogs and helped out in the sales area. The girls also spent time talking to prospective “adoptive parents” of rescue dogs and described the day as a “great experience.”

Boy Scout Troop 10
Boy Scout Troop 10 meets every Tuesday night during the school year at the West Houston Church of Christ on West Road and Queenston. Our meetings begin at 7 PM. We spend our time working on merit badges, planning for our monthly camp outs and having fun!! We have had a wonderful summer this year! Our older boys, 14 and up, went on a High Adventure camping trip to Alaska! While they were there they were able to go white water rafting, hiking and even see and learn about an Alaskan dog sled team! The younger Scouts, 13 and under, had a great time at Camp Constantin on Possum Kingdom Lake. They were able to work on several merit badges, camp in a lake front campsite, build their own raft for a competition and participate in a Troop Shoot! We are gearing up for the new School year and will be taking our September camp out to Guadalupe River State Park. Now is the perfect time to join us and get started on this fabulous journey! The Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization as defined by the Internal Revenue Code, Section 501(c) 3 and all qualified donations made to ZTA Foundation are tax-deductable, so please consider helping us make a difference in the lives of women everywhere. The Pink Tie Affair fundraising event, through the ZTA Foundation, supports breast cancer education and awareness, the Komen Race for the Cure® Survivor program, scholarships, educational programming and leadership development. Through our affiliations with The Susan G. Komen Foundation, Yoplait, The NFL and Self Magazine, the ZTA Foundation has donated millions of dollars to this worthy cause. As one of the leading causes of death in women, breast cancer affects us all. We had a great turnout for last year’s first annual, raising $7000 toward our cause and anticipate an even better 2012. If you are interested in purchasing tickets or other ways of contributing to the event, please contact Natalie Taylor at daisemail@comcast.net or www.cypresszta.com, our website. We hope to have your support and to see you there!

DECIBELLES (A Barbershop Chorus)
We are a ladies daytime chorus with approximately 30 members. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 30 years. We sing old favorites and contemporary tunes arranged in the barbershop style. The four parts creating the barbershop sound are Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass. We rehearse Friday mornings from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center located at 2501 Westerland, off Westheimer and Gessner. We love to have visitors and even more when you decide to join our chorus. For additional information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or decibelle@ comcast.net (email). We perform two types of shows each year. Currently we are singing a selection of patriotic songs, Johnny Mathis’ “Chances Are,” Perry Como’s “Hot Diggity Dog” and other fun tunes. You’ll be singing along with us before you know it. Our Christmas show includes old favorites, but also includes new fun tunes with props, narratives and choreography. We’ll begin preparing that program in October and book performances for the first two weeks in December. Come visit any Friday and see how much fun you can have with us.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through September. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
