How Much Water Is Enough for My Texas Lawn? This article contains excerpts from the West Harris County Regional Water Authorities July 2012 Waterworks newsletter. Research was conducted at the Texas A&M Turf Grass Research Site to learn about the irrigation needs of various turf grasses. The project’s objective was to compare a Southeast Texas lawn watered two days a week with one watered four days a week. As it turned out, the project effectively showed that grass can survive with minimal watering or just a little rainfall. According to Dr. Chalmers, Texas AgriLife Extension professor and co-author of Turfgrass Selection for Texas and Turfgrass Establishment for Texas, “If you know a few simple facts, it isn’t all that difficult. Water moves into most clay soils at a rate of 0.09 inches per hour… not very fast. Irrigation systems, on the other hand, apply water at a rate of 0.25 to 1.5 inches per hour or more. So…for efficiency, the irrigation controller should be set to apply only about 0.10 inches of water at a time. Applying water faster than a soil can absorb in one setting results in water moving across the soil surface, running into the gutter and down the storm drain. Setting irrigation to repeat this type of cycle every few hours allows water to move into the soil.” Reprinted with permission of the West Harris County Regional Water Authority, from an article appearing in the Authority’s July 2012 WATERWORKS Newsletter July Water Report: Below is the consumption report for July 2012 showing the water usage for all residences in the district. The average water usage was 16,243 gallons per household for the month of May. The district exceeded our water usage limit by 2,883,500 gallons for the month of May so we incurred a fee of $7,209.

TLWA Activities Besides our “big events,” TLWA hosts activity groups that meet weekly, monthly or quarterly according to our members’ interests. At the Ladies’ Pot Luck Dinner, which is our kick-off event for the year, these activities get organized with chairpersons, meeting dates and times, and a list of interested members. (Expressing an interest in an activity doesn’t obligate you to participate!) Arts and Crafts has been meeting through the summer and is continuing this fall. Our other activities have taken a break and will be resuming this month. And we may have new groups forming at our potluck dinner as well, so if you are interested in an activity and don’t see it listed, please call our Activities Chairperson, Hana Soudek at 713-937-3491 to see if a group has started or if other members have expressed an interest in it. We always welcome new activities! The contact information for the chairpersons of current activity groups is listed below. Please call them to find out the specifics after our Pot Luck Dinner. Sixteen-year-old Longwood resident Braely Pace was determined to press forward with his Eagle Scout project on the morning of Friday, July 13th. Pace, a member of Boy Scout Troop #84 sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, had spent weeks organizing donations and recruiting 17 volunteers to layer a protective safety cushion of mulch onto two playgrounds owned by The Woods Private School. The plan had come off with only one hitch - both playgrounds were saturated with rain and the playground located at 15002 Lakewood Forest Drive sat next to an overflowing tributary of Cypress Creek, which had already reached flood stage and was continuing to rise. Despite the floodwaters, Pace and Chad Boase, an assistant director at the school, decided it was safe to move ahead with the much-needed project. Pace joked to Boase, “No one here is afraid to get wet or muddy!” Pace pitched his Eagle project idea to Phillip Sheppard of Living Earth Technology Company, who generously agreed to donate 30 cubic yards of mulch. Pace recruited his hardworking, mostly teenage volunteers from his own congregation, the Longwood Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Pace is no stranger to hard work, growing up on a 500-acre Utah family farm, where he bailed and hauled alfalfa by hand. He returns every summer to help out. This work ethic has been reinforced during his eight years in Scouting, which fosters self-reliance, leadership and hard work, culminating in the Eagle Project.

ERIC BASSETT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND The Eric Bassett Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in December 2007 to honor Eric’s memory in a positive way by providing Cypress area students with financial assistance to pursue education after high school. The scholarship fund awards a $20,000 scholarship annually. The scholarship is administered by the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation. The first scholarship was awarded in May 2008 to Eric’s Cy-Falls High School classmate and teammate Blake Billings. Blake started a new tradition by presenting Eric and Ana Bassett with the tassel he received at graduation from Texas A&M University. For more information about donating or endowed scholarships contact Marie Holmes at marie@thecfef.org or visit www.thecfef.org . Members of the Suessical cast presented the books to David Garcia, CFISD Director of Student Services.

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER PROVIDES HUNDREDS OF BOOKS FOR CFISD STUDENTS The Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) used a book drive in its production of Seussical to help support Cy-Fair ISD Title I Schools. HFAC students, parents and patrons donated over 400 books valued in excess of $1,500 for CFISD to give to third, fourth and fifth graders at a CFISD camp for homeless and at risk students. In addition, HFAC raised $400 that was used to purchase new books for students at Milsap Elementary School.

If you are not the parent, legal guardian or grandparent of a student enrolled in the school at which you would like to volunteer, State law requires certain procedures in order the ensure the safety of all students. These steps are encompassed by the CFISD Global Volunteer program.

Mildred’s Umbrella Theater Company 2012-2013 Season Kimberly Akimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, November 29-December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prizewinning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

We rehearse Friday mornings from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center located at 2501 Westerland, off Westheimer and Gessner. We love to have visitors and even more when you decide to join our chorus. For additional information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or decibelle@comcast.net (email). We perform two types of shows each year. Currently we are singing a selection of patriotic songs, Johnny Mathis’ “Chances Are,” Perry Como’s “Hot Diggity Dog” and other fun tunes. You’ll be singing along with us before you know it. Our Christmas show includes old favorites, but also includes new fun tunes with props, narratives and choreography. We’ll begin preparing that program in October and book performances for the first two weeks in December. Come visit any Friday and see how much fun you can have with us.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through September. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
