Grandparent’s Day

This day has a threefold purpose: • To honor grandparents • To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children. • To help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer. The impetus for a National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide. President Jimmy Carter, in 1978, proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. As Grandparents Day approaches, help children and/or grandchildren to identify and date all photos in old family albums. Many happy memories can be derived from this. Everyone is a grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this day - a time to discover one’s roots and learn patience, understanding and appreciation for the elderly. Many times, only grandparents have answers to questions about family histories. When this information is passed down to the grandchildren, everyone can be assured of his heritage being preserved. Most important, Grandparents Day can signify a loving spirit that lives within us throughout the year, a spirit of love and respect for our elders. Grandparents Day is the perfect time to enhance communication between the generations. There are many, many elderly who are not fortunate enough to have family nearby. The need is increasing every day to fill the void of their loneliness. In every neighborhood, there are elderly who would love an opportunity to be a Foster Grandparent. Millions of people have difficulty reading. That’s because, despite what many people think, literacy issues are not just relegated to children and young adults. To improve literacy in America, we must consider readers of all ages and backgrounds. Here are some tips to help you improve and encourage reading and literacy. Here’s How: 1. Read books every day and let people see you do it. You may be a role model (to your child, your niece or nephew or some other individual in your family or circle of acquaintances). 2. Get involved with your local library. Many libraries offer literacy programs, which encourage reading in your community. See what you can do to help. 3. Talk about reading. Ask questions about what the individuals in your life are reading.

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s.

CY-WOODS KEY CLUB
As the threshold of the next school year approaches, it is easy to become dismayed with the depletion of summer break. But despite this tendency, we at Cypress Woods Key Club utilize this time to build anticipation for the upcoming year. Though we have remained active throughout the summer through volunteering at various food banks, triathlons and academies - we have to acknowledge the heightened club vigor that comes with the school year. We anticipate the certain aspects that come with a highly active club such as more members, more socials and more service opportunities. Such factors facilitate the success of the club and our strides towards the betterment of our community. Events like those at Cypress Assistance Ministries (CAM), the Houston Food Bank and many other organizations allow members to effectively contribute their time and service. Then social events like the lock-in allow said members to socialize and celebrate the hard work they have contributed to their community and the world as a whole through service and donation. With such features ahead of us it is easy to see why, as key clubbers, we are anticipating them whole-heartedly. We would love to assist at your event as well! Sports Sign Up for Fall Soccer CY Fair Area
Fun, Fair, Positive Soccer Fall Registration Now Open
Registration for Fun, Fair, Positive Soccer (FFPS) is open for boys and girls ages 4 to 18 for the fall season. Games start on October 6, 2012. FFPS is a non-profit youth soccer program dedicated to providing a positive youth sports experience for all children. Founded in 1986 in Katy, Texas, FFPS has grown to 22 leagues and 16,000 players throughout the Greater Houston area. FFPS offers children a fun and fair experience, including one practice per week, a full uniform and trophy for every player, equal playing time, opportunities to play every position, co-ed/balanced teams, positive coaching and more. No tryouts are required. Registration schedule and fees (sign up early and save): Thru September 17th: $104 Online After September 18th: $109 Online Go to www.FFPS.org to sign up. Registration fee includes a full uniform (shirt, shorts and socks), trophy, trained positive coaches, nice fields and background checks on all volunteers. All major credit cards are accepted. Coaches will call players to schedule practice by October 3rd. Practice times and location will be determined by the coach and team. The fall schedule includes eight games, with all games played locally on Saturdays from October 6th - December 1st (skip Thanksgiving week). FFPS has three locations in the Cy-Fair Area. Come join men 18 yrs. and older for our men’s Outward Flag Football league coming this fall at Bear Creek Baptist Church. Bear Creek is located on Fry Rd and West Little York. Beginning Sunday, September 9th, Bear Creek United Methodist Church will offer “Christian Believer,” a 30-week study that focuses on the classical teachings of the Christian faith. Through the use of words, symbols and hymns, topics will be presented, explained and interpreted in an easy-to-understand format. FORE Cy-Fair, the Chamber’s Annual Golf Tournament will be held at Longwood Golf Club on Monday, September 24th with an 11:30 am scramble-shotgun start. The tournament will provide a dynamic networking opportunity for those who do business - or want to do business - in this dynamic and growing region called Cy-Fair. Area businesses can sign on for a variety of sponsorship and marketing opportunities, which offer exposure to tournament participants, as well as, the more than 1,300 Chamber members through email and web marketing campaigns. The tournament kicks off with registration at 9:30 AM. During that time, participants can also take part in a putting contest and fuel up with a provided lunch. Golf gets underway at 11:30 AM with a scramble-shotgun start. An awards dinner and raffle will start at 5 PM. In addition to the sponsorships, the public is invited to purchase $10 raffle tickets for some great prizes. Raffle tickets will be available at the chamber office and at member businesses throughout the Cy-Fair area. You need not be present to win. A portion of the proceeds from the tournament, dinner and auction benefit the Adam Skinner Memorial Scholarship of the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation. Adam Skinner was a 12 year-old Cy-Fair youth who died in a tragic traffic accident in 1999 and a scholarship endowment has been established in his memory. The Chamber has contributed more than $74,000 to the endowment.

Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.
