October 2012 Happy HALLOWEEN! Katy neighborhood watch team network looking for members About 5 years ago after a series of home burglaries, Seven Meadows formed a Neighborhood Watch Team with the help of Ft. Bend County Crime Prevention Officer Gerard Argao and the neighborhood’s contract deputy. The NW Team met monthly since then until recently. Busy schedules kept people from attending the meetings, but they did stay in touch with the leadership of the Seven Meadows Neighborhood Watch Team through emails. A stream of Neighborhood Alerts to an organized group of block/street captains and section leaders: • Reminder alerts were sent out regularly to remind neighbors to put their home on vacation watch if they go out of town and to let their neighbors know to keep an eye on their house and how to contact them if something happened. • If there was a crime incident - often when someone forgot to lock their car and it was rummaged through during the night, an alert would go out. Earlier this year, there was a pattern of home burglaries that crossed subdivision lines and targeted families who were at dinner at a local restaurant. This brought hundreds of residents together at Neighborhood Watch meetings in many of the Katy subdivisions.
That created the idea of a Katy Neighborhood Watch Team. A central information point that would collect information and share it with not just Seven Meadows residents but those in Cinco Ranch, Grand Lakes, Grayson Lakes and other subdivisions. A website was created for a one-stop source of Neighborhood Watch tips - www.katyneighborhoodwatchteam.org
Texas Night Out Against Crime is Tuesday, October 2, 2012. Texas Law Enforcement agencies encourage neighborhoods to come together and have a block party to get to know one another and exchange contact information. Katy Neighborhood Watch Team proposes that neighborhoods register their block party with them, so the party can be posted on the website and also shared with Crime Prevention Officer Gerard. It is hoped that the patrol officers may stop by the parties. Because of busy schedules, the NW Team suggests to pick a day between October 1st and October 6th to host the party. Email katynwteam@live.com with the information to be posted on the website and if it is early enough - in a press release. For more information, contact Jeanmarie Mayfield, Katy NW Team Coordinator at katynwteam@live.com or 281-574-6617. Also, visit www.katyneighborhoodwatchteam.org to check out the website.

Looking for a cheap, easy, fast, funny costume this Halloween? Try one of these ideas, sure to be a hit when trick-or-treating or at parties. • Dress up as you normally do. If someone asks what you are, tell them you’re a werewolf. If they ask why you have no hair or fangs, explain that it’s not a full moon. • Get a bag of white balloons and a box. Put the box over your head and cut out holes for your arms. Paint the box a bright color and the word “soap” across it. Then tape the bubbles to the top of the box around your shoulders and head. • Tape a bunch of green or purple balloons all over yourself (wear green or brown clothing underneath). Go as a bunch of grapes. • Throw a white sheet over your head and cut a hole for your head to come through. Wear a yellow hat and paint your face yellow with make up. Go as a fried egg. • Get a box and paint it white. Make holes for your head and arms. Paint or draw black spots on it and go as a die. If you have a partner, make two and go as a pair of dice. • Get some yellow yarn and brown pom-poms. Glue them all over an old sweat suit. Put an old colander over your head as a hat. Go as spaghetti and meat balls. • Wear a clown costume top and paint your face. Get a large box and paint it a bright color. Make a hole for your waist and put it on as if the bottom of a skirt. Go as a jack-in-the-box.

She and her volunteers sewed 200 small fabric drawstring bags and filled them with water bottles and various toiletry items like soaps, razors, shampoos and lotions that were do nated by many friends and several hotels in the community. B ecome a Tutor-Understand our Student’s Lifelines
Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”
RUOK Program Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright,

PLEASE NOTE - Pets on Leashes It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
Fort Bend County “Leash Law” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’
do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

The Ft. Bend County Recycling center is located nearby in Rosenberg (just 10 miles away) and accepts glass/bottles and Styrofoam that Waste Management doesn’t pick up. Visit the Ft. Bend Co. government website for information: www.co.fort-bend.tx.us. Some recycling facts: • It takes about 1-2 million years for glass to decompose. • It takes 1+ million years for Styrofoam to decompose. For more facts on decomposition time, visit http://behealthyandrelax.com/2007/11/how-long-does-it-take-to-decompose.
Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs

Cindy; Bob Boyett, PSP and wife Sandi, Chaplin; Frank McLaurin, PDDGER and wife Cherie; Charles Sprayberry, PDDGER; Charles Conley, Bulletin Editor and wife Dorris, Lodge Sweetheart; Gerry McGill, Lodge Bar Manager and wife Susan, Secretary. Opening ceremonies included the ever impressive “Parade of State Flags” and introduction of State Presidents as well as a Memorial Service in honor of deceased Elks members. Business of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) was conducted in several business sessions and individual sessions in several areas were provided including Public Relations, Youth Activities and ENF. A new national president was elected and installed in addition to several other officers. National Ritual Competition provided the opportunity to compare teams from all over the country and root for your favorite one. The winner this year was from Carlsbad, New Mexico. Representing Texas was Houston lodge #151. Texas is noted for its Hospitality Room, but this year was even bigger and better than ever. Highlights of the food served included Bob Boyett’s delicious special recipe chile to accompany Texas tamales and brisket to rival any of the barbeque available in the Austin area, cooked in advance by Van Poorman of the Katy Lodge. Texas boasted its special crew of “cowboy” greeters from the Panwest District (North West Texas area) that added a special Texas flair and flavor to already obvious “true Texas hospitality.” Each state provides a hospitality room, which keeps everyone busy outside of business time. Getting to meet and visit with other Elks from so many parts of our nation is exciting and rewarding. Many have state and local lodge pins to trade, which leaves you with a reminder of special times spent with special people.
Epsilon Mu The Epsilon Mu chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa will be sponsoring membership meetings from September to December 2012 in Katy ISD schools. Interested women teachers who have been actively involved in education for 2 years and have been recommended by an Alpha Delta Kappa teacher are eligible for membership. Elizabeth Stelevich, President of the Epsilon Mu chapter, recently attended the Texas State Convention in Corpus Christi where teachers from all over the state met to select new officers. Cindy Bigham, from League City, will serve as the Texas State President for the next biennium. Alpha Delta Kappa is an international honorary sorority for women educators. Membership, which is honorary and based on peer recognition, provides a wealth of opportunities for leadership development and networking through workshops, training sessions, conferences and conventions. But, perhaps the greatest opportunity Alpha Delta Kappa provides is the opportunity to make a difference. Around the world, Alpha Delta Kappa members combine their energies and talents to enrich their lives and the lives of others through thousands of heartwarming, community-based altruistic projects. More than 38,000 members in more than 1,400 chapters around the world have discovered the many opportunities provided by membership in Alpha Delta Kappa. Texas is divided into 16 districts and the Katy ISD is proud to have Epsilon Mu Chapter representing our women educators. Locally, the chapter has sponsored scholarships for graduating seniors organized Bingo Games at nursing homes and collected socks for the residents, provided materials for the Threads of Love group to create blankets for the NICU nurseries in our local hospitals, adopted Families at Christmas, provided funds for a SMILE TRAIN surgery, Katy Christian Ministries, TARC and the American Heart Association. Recently, members adopted the Krause Center as their Holiday Project and then helped fund the Spring Prom. Internationally, the group raises funds for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and the St. Jude Hospital for Research. More information can be obtained on the www.alphadeltakappa. org website or by contacting Mrs. Stelevich at aestel@comcast.net

OCTOBER GARDENING TIPS
• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or oldpanty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures aregoing to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.
