CINCO RANCH COMMUNITY NEWS

OCTOBER IS NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) program is dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of the early detection of breast cancer through a nationwide campaign. NBCAM started as a weeklong campaign in 1985 with 2 founding members. Today the American Cancer Society is one of many national public service organizations, professional associations and government agencies that form the NBCAM Board of Sponsors. During October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the member organizations of the Board of Sponsors join forces to spread the message that early detection of breast cancer followed by prompt treatment saves lives. The American Cancer Society recommends early detections. Women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. The third Friday in October each year is National Mammography Day, first proclaimed by President Clinton in 1993. On this day or throughout the month, women are encouraged to make a mammography appointment. To find a facility in your area, please call: American Cancer Society (800) 227-2345 National Cancer Institute (800) 4-CANCER Or visit nbcam.org or www.cancer.org for more information.

• Consider alternatives to trick-or-treating. Alternatives include house or school parties or volunteering at a haunted-house project. Teen and Adult Drivers: • Clear the driver’s view. Be sure that neither the driver’s costume nor anything else in the car obstructs the driver’s view. • Wear a seat belt. Be sure your passengers are wearing a safety belt, even if they have to take off part of their costume to attach it. • Drive slowly and defensively. Don’t assume that a pedestrian, especially an excited youngster in a costume, will move as you expect. Keep an eye out for trick-or-treaters darting out from parked cars. Homeowners: • Replace burned-out bulbs in exterior lights. Leave your exterior lights on later than usual - perhaps even all night. • Clear the pathway. Make sure the path to your door is well lighted and your lawn is clear of things that could be tripped over, such as jack-o’-lanterns with lit candles, ladders, garden hoses, flowerpots, bikes and animal leashes. • Sweep wet leaves from sidewalks and stairs. • Keep excitable pets away from the door. You’ll have a safer and calmer house if you keep Fido away from where you are dispensing the treats. • Put your car in the garage. Lock your garage doors.

GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER

N

Oh Magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together. Psalms 34:3

2

• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees.

Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

Shaffer Elementary School CHICK-FIL-A SUPPORTS NEW KATY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

With the 2012 - 2013 school year only a month away, Katy ISD is celebrating the completion of three new schools. On July 24, 2012, Katy ISD’s school #35, Shafer Elementary, opened their doors to the Katy community by hosting an Open House to unveil the newly completed building. The community was invited to tour the brand new building and meet Principal Cheryl Rankin and other staff. The Seven Lakes Cheerleaders and Shafer Elementary Cheers led the schools’ first Pep Rally in the gymnasium. The schools’ namesakes, Fred and Patti Shafer, were in attendance, as well as the Chick-fil-A Cow donning knight attire.

With more than 73 years in education combined, Fred and Patti Shafer, the schools’ namesake, have made an impact in the lives of many students, staff and the community. Fred Shafer joined Katy ISD as the director of Special Education. He oversaw the Preschool Programs for Children with Disabilities, which was recognized as a Promising Practice by the Texas Education Agency in 2005 and 2006. He established scientific researchedbased programs for students with autism at all levels, including preschool. The program was used as a model for other districts throughout the State of Texas. He was instrumental in the implementation of the Positive Approach to Student Success (PASS) program that supports students with emotional and behavioral disorders in mainstream settings. Fred has also worked as a Special Education Director at Region IV Education Service Center. Fred received the TCASE Hall of Honor Award for distinguished service in the field of special education, was nominated by the Region IV Special Education Directors for the Texas Council of Administrators of Special Educations (TCASE) for Special Education Director of the Year and was awarded the Distinguished Citizenship Award by the Katy Elks Lodge. Patti joined Katy ISD as an assistant principal at McDonald Junior High. In 2002 she was promoted to principal at West Memorial Junior High and in 2008 was honored to open the new WoodCreek Junior High as principal, where she stayed through retirement. Patti is passionate about student success and has worked to make a difference in the lives of students, staff and the community. She is always visible on her campus and has spent hours serving on discussion panels, screening applicants and participating on committees that make an impact on the community. Scouts Girl Scout Gold Award

Dayna Porter, a junior at Taylor High School, recently earned her Girl Scout Gold Award. Dayna’s project targeted homelessness in Houston and was called Bags for Hope. She and her volunteers sewed 200 small fabric drawstring bags and filled them with water bottles and various toiletry items like soaps, razors, shampoos and lotions that were donated by many friends and several hotels in the community. Once the bags were completed Dayna delivered them to two missions – the Star of Hope Mission and the Open Door Mission, which are both located in Houston. Dayna would like to thank everyone for the many donations that helped make her project possible.

Pets and their people are invited to the Blessing of the Animals at New Hope Presbyterian Church, which is located at 1350 North Mason Road, Katy, TX 77449. It is scheduled for Saturday, October 6, 2012. This service celebrates the important place that pets hold in our lives, reminding us of the wonder of God’s creation and our role as stewards of the earth and all of its creatures. The service begins with a procession of the animals and ends with an opportunity for each pet to receive an individual blessing. All pets should be held, caged or on leashes and all children with pets must be accompanied by an adult. Children may bring stuffed animals. Those whose pets do not travel well or do not get along well with other animals are asked to bring a photo of those pets. For more information, you can contact the church office at 281-492-8520.

Congregation Or Ami Great Comedy Night

As comedian Allan Sherman once said, “you don’t have to be Jewish”…… to perform comedy at Congregation Or Ami, West Houston’s only conservative Synagogue, but you do have to be funny. On Saturday, October 13th, nationally renowned comedian Ross Bennett, will perform his unique brand of very funny stand-up comedy at the Synagogue, in an authentic comedy club setting, at 8:30 PM. Bennett, a one time West Point Cadet who left the Academy to become a Comedian (“probably the greatest service I will ever do for my country”), has been performing comedy for over 30 years. Over the years, Ross Bennett has appeared at the Friar’s Club and on many TV programs including “Evening at the Improv.” Bennett also co-wrote and stars in the very funny play, PASTRAMI ON RYE WITH MAYO, about the last 4 comedians performing in the Catskills. The October 13th performance is open to the entire West Houston / Katy community. Please purchase your tickets early, as seating is limited. Congregation Or Ami is located at 3443 Wilcrest Drive Houston, TX 77042. Tickets, which are $36 each, include a wonderful selection of desserts, wine, soda and coffee. Premium seating and group tables are available. For additional information, please check online at www.oramihouston.org or call 713-334-4300.

Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

DECIBELLES (A Barbershop Chorus)

NATURE PROGRAM FOR PRESCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN

We are a ladies daytime chorus with approximately 30 members. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 30 years. We sing old favorites and contemporary tunes arranged in the barbershop style. The four parts creating the barbershop sound are Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass. We rehearse Friday mornings from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center located at 2501 Westerland, off Westheimer and Gessner. We love to have visitors and even more when you decide to join our chorus. For additional information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or decibelle@ comcast.net (email). We perform two types of shows each year. Currently we are singing a selection of patriotic songs, Johnny Mathis’ “Chances Are,” Perry Como’s “Hot Diggity Dog” and other fun tunes. You’ll be singing along with us before you know it. Our Christmas show includes old favorites, but also includes new fun tunes with props, narratives and choreography. We’ll begin preparing that program in October and book performances for the first two weeks in December. Come visit any Friday and see how much fun you can have with us.

CROSSROADS mentors are regular people, just like you, who prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering positive mentoring relationships. The goal is crime prevention! Our mentors must be 21 years of age and volunteer a minimum of 1 hour a week. There are many sites, areas and available times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned child. We desperately need loving and caring mentors for boys and girls that do not have anyone visiting them! Please consider devoting just one hour a week to the future of a needy child, many times you are their only visitors. Contact Jan Sadler Gibbs at jan.gibbs@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779.

The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Clients become more empowered and better equipped to fully live their lives, each day. To volunteer, please call one of our arenas and ask to speak with a volunteer coordinator. Join a group of people dedicated to improving the lives of children. If you are searching for a good cause to lend a hand to, you need look no further. Houston Children’s Charity is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for underprivileged, abused and disabled children who have been otherwise left behind. The scope of our support is limited only by the availability of resources. Our goal, the rainbow that we chase, is to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered. Do you have the time and desire to volunteer to help a great cause? We are always in need of volunteers to help throughout the year. This is a great way for school age kids to get in community service hours. Do you have gently used children’s clothing, shoes and jackets? At Houston Children’s Charity we are setting up the “HCC Closet.” All of the items donated will be given to children – not sold at a retail store. Please contact our office at 713-524-2878 or visit our website www.houstonchildrenscharity.org for more information on our organization.

STANDUP FOR KIDS

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids, please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help, visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

CenterPoint Energy understands that the responsible planting of trees is a way to care for our environment and beautify our community, yet we are also committed to the safe and reliable delivery of electricity. Our professional tree pruning program is integrated into our daily operations to help make this possible. Trees that grow close to CenterPoint Energy’s electrical poles and lines will be pruned by a professional tree trimming company under contract with CenterPoint Energy. Any vegetation greater than 10 feet in height will be removed from high-voltage transmission line rights-of-way. Palm trees growing near power lines create unique issues. Unlike other trees, palms grow in a straight, vertical line, with a single growing point at the top of the tree. Because of this single-growth point, normal pruning techniques are not effective. With most trees, crews are able to direct the growth away from power lines using proper pruning techniques, but growth of palm trees cannot be redirected. If you choose to include palm trees in your landscape, CenterPoint Energy recommends a planting distance of 20 - 40 feet to reduce the risk of windblown fronds contacting power lines. Consumers should plant palm trees far enough away from power lines that no part of the tree ever grows within 10 feet of the line. CenterPoint Energy encourages you to plant the “Right Tree in the Right Place” by thinking about the mature height of a tree and its distance from power lines before planting. For more information on safe planting practices and a list of power line-friendly trees, visit CenterPointEnergy.com/trees.

FUN SCHOOL LUNCH IDEAS

Fill your child’s lunchbox with healthy and fun lunches they’ll actually eat! • Cookie Cutter Sandwiches: Any sandwich cut with a large cookie cutter: star, heart, dinosaur, animals, etc. will become an irresistible treat! • Pin Wheel Sandwiches: Spread your child’s favorite sandwich filling onto a tortilla, roll it up and slice it into smaller pieces. Our favorite fillings are - peanut butter and jelly, lunchmeat with cream cheese or cheese spread. • Cheesy Stars: Use a small star cookie cutter to cut cheddar cheese pieces. In a separate bag, provide crackers or apple slices. You can also use the cookie cutter to cut bologna,
ham or turkey.

• Bugs on Log: An old favorite with kids. Fill celery with cream cheese or peanut butter and top with raisins. An equally delicious alternative to peanut butter is cream cheese or Laughing Cow Cheese. • Smiley Face Fun: Spread peanut butter or cream cheese on a rice cake. Make a face using raisins or any dried fruit and a full head of hair with coconut flakes. This is a bit hard to pack for a lunch but a zip close plastic bag usually works pretty well. • Cookie Dippers: Send vanilla wafer cookies along with a favorite yogurt. Kids love to dip and this way they are getting less sugar than most packaged treats. • Fun Chips: Use large cookie cutters to cut a flour tortilla or wrap. Arrange on cookie sheet and toast in a 400 degree oven for 6 - 8 minutes. Send to school plain or with bean dip for dipping. Try brushing a very small amount of olive oil or cooking spray. Then sprinkle Parmesan cheese or cinnamon sugar. If you try the cinnamon sugar, send the chips along with a container of applesauce for dipping.

• Kid’s love to dip? Pack string cheese and rolled meat slices with honey mustard dressing for dipping. I made it myself! I find that my children are more apt to eat a brown bag lunch they’ve helped to make. Whether it’s the cookies they baked with me or the sandwich they made in the morning. • Packaging The retail world knows... enticing packaging sells. Especially when it comes to kids. Unfortunately, what’s inside is not always nutritious. Solve this dilemma by generating your own fun packaging. Before the school year begins, stock up on cheerfully colored re-usable containers, fun party napkins and stickers for plastic bags. A healthy lunch will be fun to eat!

TAILGATING TIPS

Zip Lock Bags: Make sure that you get the freezer bag versions, you need something tough. These bags are incredibly versatile and do a great job when you want to keep food cold on the way to the tailgate.

For example, flank steaks need longer marinating time. So, put them in a Zip Lock freezer bag with the dressing or whatever marinade you’re using, let them sit for two days in the fridge, then freeze them until the night before the game.

Then take them out the day of - they will thaw, but are still very cold for the trip. So, there’s less danger of the meat turning, like it could in a cooler that isn’t fully chilled.

Freeze Your Water: I love this one because it can serve more than one purpose. If you get bottled water, freeze it. The day of the game, pop it in to the cooler. If it’s hot out, you can take it out as it melts and you’ll have plenty of cold water.
These frozen gems can also keep things cool and the bottles make good ice packs.

Plus, you won’t “water down” your cooler like ice will. Prep for Burgers: Make your burgers in advance and make sure they are no thicker than 3/4 inch; thick burgers can take a long time to cook. If you like to eat, stack patties.

Freeze your patties between sheets of wax paper. When you’ve got the grill going, put the patties on (still frozen) and cook 3 to 4 minutes on each side.

Then, dress ‘em up accordingly. The Jumbo Drink: It’s always a good idea to bring a “jumbo” cup so it’s less trips to fill it on up. Make sure that your cup sticks out like a sore thumb or has distinguishable markings so that you know it’s yours.

You wouldn’t want to drink out of someone else’s cup now, would you?

The Old Foil Trick: This is one of the oldest in the book. Line your portable grill with aluminum foil for easy clean up and disposal of spent charcoal.

You can use any kind, but I recommend using heavy-duty foil, as it is a little more durable and stronger.

Laminated Checklist: This is one that people keep saying is the tip that saves them all kinds of headaches. We’ve been tailgating for years and our checklist was laminated early on, because we knew that this would be the easy way to keep track of our list.

As you pack for the game, simply check items on with a dry erase marker. When you’re done, wipe it off and you’ll be ready for the next game. Large Storage Bins: Oh, where would we be without the large storage bins? These magnificent totes keep your tailgating gear and equipment organized. It’s easy in and easy out all season long.

If you need these bins, your local home improvement store has plenty of them.

Warm Weather Ice Melt: If you happen to have your tailgate on a hot day, make sure that your beverages are very cold before you put them in the ice in your cooler.

The fact is, if you have really cold drinks, the ice in the cooler doesn’t have to work as hard and it helps slow the ice melt. And on a hot day, it’s always good to be able to reach in to the cooler for a little ice. By Joe Cahn of www.tailgating.com

FIGHT THE BITE! REDUCE YOUR RISK

BBQs, gardening, swimming pools, hikes... and mosquitoes. Enjoy the outdoors, but remember to protect yourself and your family from mosquitoborne diseases such as West Nile Virus. Your best defense against being bitten is simply to be prepared. Help Fight the Bite! • When outdoors, use an insect repellent containing the active ingredient DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535 to reduce exposure to mosquito bites. Always apply as directed on the label. Do not allow young children to apply repellent to themselves; have an adult do it for them. • If possible, wear long-sleeved clothing and long pants when outdoors at dawn and dusk, which are peak mosquito biting times. • Place mosquito netting over infant carriers when you are outdoors with infants. • Don’t feed the storm drains. Sweep up lawn clippings, leaves and tree limbs from sidewalks and driveways. • Remove/empty containers that can hold water such as flowerpots, buckets, tires, toys and plastic swimming pools. Birdbaths and pet water bowls should be changed at least twice a week. • Cover your boat or store in a covered place. Drain any standing water and make sure the bilge pump is working. Turn over canoes, kayaks and small boats to store upside down. • Keep rain gutters clean and draining and repair any outdoor household leaks. • When watering the lawn, be aware of any excess water that may accumulate. Fill in low areas around the yard. • When mosquitoes are noticed in your yard, spray with an outdoor mosquito spray. Be sure to use according to directions on the label. To control mosquitoes in your house, use a “flying insect spray.” Be sure to use according to directions on the label. • Household pets can be exposed to West Nile Virus (WNV). Contact your veterinarian for more information. Source: Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services

PUMPKIN LUMINARIES CRAFT

By: Amanda Formaro Difficulty: Average Age: 7 and up

Greet your trick or treating friends this year by lining your sidewalk or windowsill with these glowing pumpkin luminaries craft you made yourself! Set aside a rainy afternoon for this fun and rewarding pumpkin craft. What you’ll need: • Glass jars (we used canning jars available at the grocery store) • 1/2 yard orange fabric • Scraps of yellow fabric, small amounts needed • Scissors • White craft glue • Old paintbrush • Small bowl • Water • Black felt • Tea light candles OR miniature flashlights How to make it: • Begin by washing the jars and removing labels, if any. Dry completely. • Cut or rip orange fabric into strips approximately 3” long and 1” wide. They don’t have to be perfect. • From the yellow fabric, cut out eyes, noses and mouths to put on your pumpkin faces.

46

• Make a decoupage mixture by putting equal amounts of water and white craft glue into a bowl and mixing together. • Using your old paintbrush, apply some decoupage mixture to a small section of the jar. • Place the orange fabric on top of the glue, then apply a small amount of glue mixture on top of the fabric, securing it to the jar. • Continue with this process until the jar is completely covered in orange fabric. Overlap pieces as you go so that there are no open gaps. • Apply yellow facial features to your pumpkins with this same method and allow to dry completely (overnight is best). • When jars are dry and can be handled without damaging your work, measure out a piece of black felt to fit around the mouth of the jar. • Cut out the piece of felt and glue around the outside of the rim. • Place a miniature flashlight or a tea light candle inside each jar. (Make sure an adult lights the candle and display it in a safe place.) Tips: • Flashlights are safer than candles, so if possible use this alternative. Miniature flashlight will fit nicely into a jar and, provided the batteries are fresh, will burn all night long. • This can be a rather long project. It’s perfect for a rainy day when kids can’t play outside. You may want to cut the fabric scraps for them ahead of time and have them invite friends over to do the project with them. • Only small amounts of yellow fabric are needed and aren’t even completely necessary. You may also use black felt for the facial features as the yellow is only visible during the day and not at night while the pumpkins are illuminated. If you use yellow, don’t purchase anything larger than ¼ yard, unless you plan to use it for another project. Look for remnants on sale at the fabric store or ask a friend if she has any lying around you can have. Yellow felt is also an inexpensive alternative. • These jars can also double as fun holders for wrapped candy during the daytime hours.
