Tuesday, October 2nd, 6:00 - 8:00 PM: All residents are invited to participate in National Night Out on Tuesday, October 2nd! This event will take place on your own individual streets or sections. Each street/section gets to pick a theme and choose what time and location to get together. This is a great opportunity for you to meet your fellow neighbors and make new friends!

Saturday, October 20th, 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM: Don’t forget to join in the fun with your fellow ghouls and goblins. Our annual Fall Festival will be located at SplashPad Texas. It’s almost time again to clean out your closets for our fall community-wide garage sale. You won’t have to haul your items far; the garage sale will take place in YOUR OWN garage! Just be ready to open your garage at 7 AM on November 3rd. To help increase traffic to your home, we suggest that you place signs at the end of your street. Don’t forget to take them down afterwards.
We’ll be creating a map of all the garage sales in the community. To be added to the map, please email your address to mevrard@canyongate.com and include a short list (five words or less) of the types of items you are selling. No additions will be accepted after Wednesday, October 31st. The maps will be handed out at the onsite office located at SplashPad Texas the day of the event. Street Trees and Tree Stakes Fall is a good time to review the trees on your property and undertake trimming and maintenance, as necessary. Remember to give special attention to your street trees, those that are situated between the sidewalk and road. As live oaks mature, their branches have a tendency to dip down towards the ground and their canopy needs to be thinned and trimmed. The canopy of street trees needs to be pruned to ensure that the branches do not impede passing traffic. Unused tree stakes should also be removed, as they can become unsightly.

Rules of the Road for Westheimer Lakes and Westheimer Lakes North This is a reminder…. The operation of motorized vehicles (ATV’s, dirt bikes, golf carts, etc.) other than mowing equipment on pathways or trails maintained by the Association or any other Common Area within the community is not allowed. According to the Texas department of public safety: • ATV’s are not allowed on a street and an operator crossing a street must have a valid driver’s license. • Golf carts are allowed on roads, but must obey all traffic laws including speed limits. If operated on a road the golf cart must have a license plate and the driver must have a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance. • Mopeds and motor assisted scooters are treated as regular bicycles. All vehicles used on roads must obey traffic laws including stop signs and speed limits. For additional information on this subject go to www.txdps.state.tx.us/msb/pages/Electric.htm. The POA believes that some of this vandalism may be occurring from individuals in the community. When items such as street signs, park signs, windows, lights are in need of replacement as result of this vandalism, your POA bears this expense. Basketball Goals Basketball is a fun sport that many like to play. As a reminder, please make sure that all basketball goals are kept in an upright position in your driveway. Basketball goals should not be left in the street at anytime or left on the side of your home when not in use. Leaving Basketball goals in the street can be a nuisance to drivers in the community and a hazard should there be a need for an emergency vehicle to gain access to your street. Please be patient when approaching the EZ Tag barrier arm and obey the signs. After stopping at the stop sign, proceed slowly and wait until the barrier arm opens fully. Bumping or hitting the barrier arm causes costly and unnecesary repairs to the Association. If there is a car in front of you, please remain at the stop sign until the car has gone through the arm and the arm is closed. The barrier arm closes after each vehicle every time.

CANYON SPRINGS AND CANYON FALLS SECTION UPDATES The Canyon Springs and Canyon Falls Gates EZ Tag Entry lanes are for registered resident entry only via electronic EZ Tags (Harris County EZ TAG or Community fast pass tags for community use only). Electronic entry tags, including credit card size Access Cards and telephone home number registration services are available to all Canyon Springs and Canyon Falls residents at the SplashPad office from 9 AM until 5 PM, Tuesday through Saturday. Call 832-222-2355 for more details. The entry will remain open during the day while sales and construction of new homes are in operation and gates will close at night. The gated areas may be accessed three (3) ways; with EZ Tag or fast pass tags, Access Card (reader is located at the dial up box in the left lane) or you may dial the home code on the telephone 10 key pad. If someone is home to answer, access may then be granted. If you experience difficulty, the gate attendant’s office may be called by pressing #0001 on the 10 keypad.

(Legally no further letters can go out for this violation until the (30 days) has expired.) 2nd letter: After the (30 days) has expired from the 1st letter a 2nd letter notifying the owner of violation will be sent. (Please note that depending on what the violation is the board can send the account to the attorney when the (30 days) has expired from this letter.) 3rd letter: This letter is optional to the board and depending on what the violation is they do not always feel the need to send a 3rd letter. Some electronic tag fees are applicable. Your proof of resident ownership will be needed to properly complete your registration. FOSTER FALCON THEATRE BOOSTER CLUB No audition required! Please join the Falcon Theatre
Booster Club that supports all aspects of Foster’s theatre department and productions. All volunteers are welcome, regardless of if your student is enrolled in a theatre class or participating in a production. Membership forms are available in Ms. Torno’s room or at www.fosterfalcontheatre.com/boosterclub.cfm (website). Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 PM in Ms. Torno’s room. This year’s musical is “South Pacific” and all hands on deck will be needed from building sets, painting scenery, costumes, concessions and much more!
FOSTER THEATRE GROUP OF 67 TRAVELS TO NEW YORK CITY
This summer, 67 Foster Theatre parents and students traveled to New York City for a Tour of Broadway. Many individuals traveling with the group had never been out of the state of Texas or on a plane. It was a life changing experience for everyone involved. The trip included an Acting class led by a Broadway Star, a trip to the Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center, an NBC Studio Tour with access to the set of Dr. Oz and a star spotting of Dan Rather. Participants took a complete tour of the Art Deco masterpiece Radio City Music Hall, where students met a Rockette and watched four Broadway shows while in NY. The plays included the longest running show in Broadway history, Phantom of the Opera, War Horse at the Lincoln Center, Wicked at the largest theatre on Broadway, The Gershwin and Jersey Boys. All travelers were delighted to have a Talk Back (question and answer) with the cast of Wicked. Additionally, students visited Strawberry Fields, Central Park, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Ellis Island, The Statue of Liberty, Grand Central Station, The New York Stock Exchange and the largest gothic cathedral in North America, Saint John the Divine. Final highlights of the trip included a trip to the newly opened World Trade Center Memorial and a trip to the Apollo theatre where students received an inspirational address from long time star of the Apollo, Billy Mitchell, who allowed students to dance, sing and act on the famous Mo-Town stage. It was a fabulous trip, which provided an eye-opening, life-changing educational experience for all those involved!

This year, the first ever Foster Falcon Theatre Leadership Camp was held. At camp, senior officers learned how to become effective leaders. The activities and instructions embodied the camp theme “I Don’t Need a Title to be a Leader.” A large portion of camp was spent watching inspirational videos and lectures on what it truly means to lead. Discussion and activities were used to emphasize points from the videos. One of the most memorable and effective activities were situation cards. Students were given a situation that might occur at school in the Theatre Department and asked to respond appropriately. After being given guidance from Ms. Torno, the FHS Theatre Director, many of the students realized their method of dealing with the given situation was not the most effective. Seniors were then given a second chance to address the seriousness of their situation at an elevated level. Currently there are eight Senior Production students who’ve chosen the goal of being effective leaders together as a unit. The group created a set of standards and expectations to be used in the classroom for the school year. It was a perfect opportunity for students to be pro-active while adhering to and enforcing positive behavior and relationships in the classroom. With each expectation came a consequence for bad behavior or breaking a rule. As a whole, the group discovered that “with great power comes great responsibility” and created their theme for the year “United We Stand, Divided We Fall.” According to Senior Theatre Officer, Cassidy Reue-Collins “The most beneficial and important part of camp came when we discussed the importance of being a leader by example and by our positive example those were leading would rise to the occasion and become a leader themselves without having to have a title.” The last two days of camp seniors spent time with underclassmen teaching new warm-up activities, acting exercises and training them in technical theatre. Overall the camp proved to be a great success.

SUNSHINE KIDS FALL FEST AT THE RIVER
The Sunshine Kids are a non-profit organization dedicated to children with cancer. The children have the opportunity to go on vacations with other childhood cancer patients. It gives them the opportunity to share with others in their same situation and gives them a break in their treatment. The Gary Greene Champions office has an annual fundraiser in the northwest part of Houston. This year, it will be at the Red River Saloon on 249 (23238) just north of Spring Cypress on Wednesday, October 3rd from 5-9 PM, with food served at 7 PM. The location, as well as the Bar-B-Q dinner, is generously donated so 100 percent of the proceeds can go to the Kids. There will be a silent auction, food, music and fun. CrossPoint Community Church is hosting it’s first 5K event! GO 5K A Different Way and The Outdoor Market, organized by the CrossPoint’s Community Impact Team, will be held at CrossPoint Westgreen, located at 700 S. Westgreen Blvd, Katy,. TX 77450 on November 17, 2012. CrossPoint Westgreen will utilize their property, as well as the adjacent Mason Creek running trails and Rick Rice Park to make up the 3.1 mile route for the race. The route will also include a series of obstacles & “outreach” tasks, which include gathering care package items and stowing them in a cinched bag that each of the 500 participants will carry throughout the journey. The completed care package bags will be delivered to persons in need throughout the community as part of the CrossPoint Community Impact “Project Feed the Need.” Participant registration begins Sept. 9th continuing thru a firm deadline of Oct. 28th. Following the race is The Outdoor Market, a second annual event that features vendors, craftsmen, household items, children’s activities and concessions. On Sunday, October 7th beginning at 8:30 AM, St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church will be hosting a Blood Drive with a mobile unit set up in their parking lot. This service celebrates the important place that pets hold in our lives, reminding us of the wonder of God’s creation and our role as stewards of the earth and all of its creatures. As comedian Allan Sherman once said, “you don’t have to be Jewish”…… to perform comedy at Congregation Or Ami, West Houston’s only conservative Synagogue, but you do have to be funny. On Saturday, October 13th, nationally renowned comedian Ross Bennett, will perform his unique brand of very funny stand-up comedy at the Synagogue, in an authentic comedy club setting, at 8:30 PM. Bennett, a one time West Point Cadet who left the Academy to become a Comedian (“probably the greatest service I will ever do for my country”), has been performing comedy for over 30 years. Over the years, Ross Bennett has appeared at the Friar’s Club and on many TV programs including “Evening at the Improv.” Bennett also co-wrote and stars in the very funny play, PASTRAMI ON RYE WITH MAYO, about the last 4 comedians performing in the Catskills.

House of Hope Fort Bend is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with National House of Hope. We are a Christcentered non-residential program working with troubled teens and their parents. Our six month program is set up to provide weekly counseling for the teens and parents. Our goal is to be a catalyst in healing and restoration in broken families. We use a modest sliding scale and books are an additional fee. We also present F.A.M.I.L.Y. Rules Workshops for schools and other groups. This program is for any faith, culture and ethnicity in assisting parents to “parent with purpose.” If your family is in chaos, then this program is for you! This family system is designed to start with children at the age of 5 through 18 teaching authority, consequences, affirmation and being consistent and correct as parents. Katy Elks Lodge Members Attend National Convention Austin, Texas was the location of this year’s national Elks convention. As a result of its close proximity to Katy, a larger than normal number of Katy Elks members attended at least a portion of it. Officers and members attending included: Gary Frizzell, ER; Norma Coston, Leading Knight; Bo Williamson, Lecturing Knight; Mary Ellen Hopperdietzel, Esquire; Ron Gall , PER and Trustee and wife Cindy; Bob Boyett, PSP and wife Sandi, Chaplin; Frank McLaurin, PDDGER and wife Cherie; Charles Sprayberry, PDDGER; Charles Conley, Bulletin Editor and wife Dorris, Lodge Sweetheart; Gerry McGill, Lodge Bar Manager and wife Susan, Secretary. The Epsilon Mu chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa will be sponsoring membership meetings from September to December 2012 in Katy ISD schools. Elizabeth Stelevich, President of the Epsilon Mu chapter, recently attended the Texas State Convention in Corpus Christi where teachers from all over the state met to select new officers. Cindy Bigham, from League City, will serve as the Texas State President for the next biennium. Alpha Delta Kappa is an international honorary sorority for women educators. Membership, which is honorary and based on peer recognition, provides a wealth of opportunities for leadership development and networking through workshops, training sessions, conferences and conventions. Ingredients 1 tablespoon butter 6 whole garlic cloves 4 to 6 slices bacon 3/4 pound (about 12) Brussels sprouts, cut in 1/2 1 teaspoon sugar 1/2 cup chicken broth Salt and freshly ground black pepper Directions In a large skillet melt the butter over medium heat. Put the garlic cloves in the skillet and brown completely. Remove the garlic to a small bowl. Add the bacon to the skillet and cook until crisp. Transfer the bacon to paper towels to drain, then cut into small pieces and set aside. Put the sprouts in the skillet with bacon grease, flat side down, and saute until they begin to brown, about 2 to 3 minutes. Turn them over, increase the heat to medium-high and add the sugar and the broth. Cook for a few minutes, then add the cooked bacon and the garlic cloves. Cover and cook for 2 more minutes. Transfer to a serving bowl and serve.

Directions Parcook the potatoes: Place in a pot of water and boil until fork-tender; let cool. Slice each potato lengthwise into eighths. Preheat a grill to medium or place a cast-iron grill pan over medium heat. Mix 1 tablespoon salt, the lime zest and cayenne in a small bowl. Recipe courtesy The Neelys Ingredients Filling: 5 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, chopped small 1/4 cup finely chopped pecans 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons maple syrup 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 tablespoon lemon juice Topping: 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 6 tablespoons chilled butter, cut into pieces 1/4 cup coarsely chopped pecans
1/3 cup brown sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt
Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. For the Filling: Mix all the ingredients together. Place into 7 to 8-ounce ramekins. For topping: Mix the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt in large bowl. Blend the butter into the mixture until it forms pea size lumps. Stir in pecans and sprinkle over filling. Bake crisps for 35 to 40 minutes. Cool 10 minutes before serving.
