OCTOBER IS NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) program is dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of the early detection of breast cancer through a nationwide campaign. NBCAM started as a weeklong campaign in 1985 with 2 founding members. Today the American Cancer Society is one of many national public service organizations, professional associations and government agencies that form the NBCAM Board of Sponsors. During October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the member organizations of the Board of Sponsors join forces to spread the message that early detection of breast cancer followed by prompt treatment saves lives. The American Cancer Society recommends early detections. Women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. The third Friday in October each year is National Mammography Day, first proclaimed by President Clinton in 1993. On this day or throughout the month, women are encouraged to make a mammography appointment. • Consider alternatives to trick-or-treating. Alternatives include house or school parties or volunteering at a haunted-house project. Teen and Adult Drivers: • Clear the driver’s view. Be sure that neither the driver’s costume nor anything else in the car obstructs the driver’s view. • Wear a seat belt. Be sure your passengers are wearing a safety belt, even if they have to take off part of their costume to attach it. • Drive slowly and defensively. Don’t assume that a pedestrian, especially an excited youngster in a costume, will move as you expect. Keep an eye out for trick-or-treaters darting out from parked cars. • Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies.

• Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

Foster High School FOSTER FALCON THEATRE LEADERSHIP CAMP 2012 - 2013

This year, the first ever Foster Falcon Theatre Leadership Camp was held. At camp, senior officers learned how to become effective leaders. The activities and instructions embodied the camp theme “I Don’t Need a Title to be a Leader.” A large portion of camp was spent watching inspirational videos and lectures on what it truly means to lead. Discussion and activities were used to emphasize points from the videos. One of the most memorable and effective activities were situation cards. Students were given a situation that might occur at school in the Theatre Department and asked to respond appropriately. After being given guidance from Ms. Torno, the FHS Theatre Director, many of the students realized their method of dealing with the given situation was not the most effective. Seniors were then given a second

chance to address the seriousness of their situation at an elevated level. Currently there are eight Senior Production students who’ve chosen the goal of being effective leaders together as a unit. The group created a set of standards and expectations to be used in the classroom for the school year. It was a perfect opportunity for students to be pro-active while adhering to and enforcing positive behavior and relationships in the classroom. With each expectation came a consequence for bad behavior or breaking a rule. As a whole, the group discovered that “with great power comes great responsibility” and created their theme for the year “United We Stand, Divided We Fall.” According to Senior Theatre Officer, Cassidy Reue-Collins “The most beneficial and important part of camp came when we discussed the importance of being a leader by example and by our positive example those were leading would rise to the occasion and become a leader themselves without having to have a title.” The last two days of camp seniors spent time with underclassmen teaching new warm-up activities, acting exercises and training them in technical theatre. Overall the camp proved to be a great success.

The trip included an Acting class led by a Broadway Star, a trip to the Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center, an NBC Studio Tour with access to the set of Dr. Oz and a star spotting of Dan Rather. Participants took a complete tour of the Art Deco masterpiece Radio City Music Hall, where students met a Rockette and watched four Broadway shows while in NY. The plays included the longest running show in Broadway history, Phantom of the Opera, War Horse at the Lincoln Center, Wicked at the largest theatre on Broadway, The Gershwin and Jersey Boys. All travelers were delighted to have a Talk Back (question and answer) with the cast of Wicked. Additionally, students visited Strawberry Fields, Central Park, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Ellis Island, The Statue of Liberty, Grand Central Station, The New York Stock Exchange and the largest gothic cathedral in North America, Saint John the Divine. Final highlights of the trip included a trip to the newly opened World Trade Center Memorial and a trip to the Apollo theatre where students received an inspirational address from long time star of the Apollo, Billy Mitchell, who allowed students to dance, sing and act on the famous Mo-Town stage. It was a fabulous trip, which provided an eyeopening, life-changing educational experience for all those involved!

New Hope Presbyterian Church Blessing of the Animals

Pets and their people are invited to the Blessing of the Animals at New Hope Presbyterian Church, which is located at 1350 North Mason Road, Katy, TX 77449. It is scheduled for Saturday, October 6, 2012. This service celebrates the important place that pets hold in our lives, reminding us of the wonder of God’s creation and our role as stewards of the earth and all of its creatures. The service begins with a procession of the animals and ends with an opportunity for each pet to receive an individual blessing. All pets should be held, caged or on leashes and all children with pets must be accompanied by an adult. Children may bring stuffed animals. Congregation Or Ami Great Comedy Night

As comedian Allan Sherman once said, “you don’t have to be Jewish”…… to perform comedy at Congregation Or Ami, West Houston’s only conservative Synagogue, but you do have to be funny. On Saturday, October 13th, nationally renowned comedian Ross Bennett, will perform his unique brand of very funny stand-up comedy at the Synagogue, in an authentic comedy club setting, at 8:30 PM. Bennett, a one time West Point Cadet who left the Academy to become a Comedian (“probably the greatest service I will ever do for my country”), has been performing comedy for over 30 years. Over the years, Ross Bennett has appeared at the Friar’s Club and on many TV programs including “Evening at the Improv.” Bennett also co-wrote and stars in the very funny play, PASTRAMI ON RYE WITH MAYO, about the last 4 comedians performing in the Catskills.

Fundraisers SUNSHINE KIDS FALL FEST AT THE RIVER

The Sunshine Kids are a non-profit organization dedicated to children with cancer. The children have the opportunity to go on vacations with other childhood cancer patients. It gives them the opportunity to share with others in their same situation and gives them a break in their treatment. The Gary Greene Champions office has an annual fundraiser in the northwest part of Houston. This year, it will be at the Red River Saloon on 249 (23238) just north of Spring Cypress on Wednesday, October 3rd from 5-9 PM, with food served at 7 PM. The location, as well as the Bar-B-Q dinner, is generously donated so 100 percent of the proceeds can go to the Kids. There will be a silent auction, food, music and fun. CrossPoint Community Church is hosting it’s first 5K event!

GO 5K A Different Way and The Outdoor Market, organized by the CrossPoint’s Community Impact Team, will be held at CrossPoint Westgreen, located at 700 S. Westgreen Blvd, Katy,. TX 77450 on November 17, 2012. CrossPoint Westgreen will utilize their property, as well as the adjacent Mason Creek running trails and Rick Rice Park to make up the 3.1 mile route for the race. We perform two types of shows each year. Currently we are singing a selection of patriotic songs, Johnny Mathis’ “Chances Are,” Perry Como’s “Hot Diggity Dog” and other fun tunes. Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.
