Pool Monitor Needed for Park Cypress

If you use our neighborhood pools, we need you! We are in need of a pool monitor for Park Cypress. This is an easy way to volunteer. You simply observe 2 or 3 times a month (during swim season), each item on the check list (which is provided to you) and report any issues to the Pool Chair. What Is Wrong with My Lawn?

If you have spots in your yard that are yellowing or dying, be sure you are treating the right problem. Chinch bugs, Brown Patch and Take-all Root Rot fungus are all possible causes. Chinch bugs can be a problem when the weather is hot and dry. Keep lawns properly watered. Excess nitrogen fertilizer makes the lawn more susceptible to chinch bugs. A few chinch bugs are normal, but large brown

Brown patch thrives in warm, humid environments, especially as nights get cooler. It can cause patches of your lawn to turn brown, wilt and dry up. If you pull on a clump, the blades will break off, leaving the runners. Turf affected by Brown Patch will grow back, usually from the middle of the area out leaving a round ring just before it rebounds completely. Brown Patch often appears in turf, which is high in nitrogen and overfertilized. Large amounts of grass clippings left on the yard may also encourage fungus. Wet soil also encourages fungus. If you irrigate, do so late at night, just before and at daybreak - not in the evening or just after dark. Be sure your yard drains and does not hold standing water.

Consult your garden center or the internet for fungicide suggestions. Two or three treatments may be needed during a growing season. One suggested organic treatment for brown patch: Mix one TBSP baking soda, one TBSP corn oil and one gallon water. Spray a light mist of the solution to your lawn. In order for fungicides and fertilizers to work, you will need to test the PH of your soil. Lawns need to have a PH, which measures 6.5 - 7.0. You can use a PH test kit or a PH soil probe. Take-all Root Rot Fungus attacks both St. Augustine and Bermuda lawns stressed by too much or too little water. If you pull on a clump of brown grass, it will lift easily - roots and all. Watering Tips

Conserve water; water only when needed. Your goal should be 1 to 1 1/2 inches per week. Less frequent, deeper watering encourages deeper root growth and helps your yard endure dry spells. Adjust your irrigation so that it does not spray paved areas or run off over curbs. Consider running two shorter cycles to allow water to soak in. Apply a low-nitrogen winterizer fertilizer to the lawn toward the end of this month or early in October. You may begin planting bulbs for spring. Use superphosphate or bulb food instead of bone meal to feed bulbs if squirrels are a problem. Refrigerate tulips, hyacinths, muscari and crocus at least 4-6 weeks before planting.

TENNIS LESSONS/COACHING: Please book tennis lessons by signing up for a court 48 hrs. in advance during non-prime hours. (No evening or weekend morning lessons, please.) If you or your child can only take lessons during prime time, please sign up for the single court at Park Cypress to prevent injury and frustration to our neighbors playing a match. If the lesson is to be a regularly set day and time, please contact the tennis committee for approval and court time can be blocked off for you at the Park Cypress court. The courts are occupied for tennis league play on Monday and Wednesday mornings and no lessons can be given during league play. Residents ONLY may reserve court times. Card access is the only way to insure our courts are only being used and cared for by our residents and their guests, please do not open the gates for anyone not having a card. Do not loan out your card. The wheelchair access gate has been tampered with and will be locked to prevent use by non-residents. Residents needing wheelchair access to the tennis courts, please contact the tennis committee and we will be happy to provide you with a key. The lights at the Gerry Ayers courts are numbered. Please note the number of the light before calling to have it repaired. Any maintenance problems at the courts can be reported to Brigitte Hobbesland, 713-591-0880. The tennis court lights are on a timer, they should come on at dusk and turn off by 10:30 pm. PARENTS: Tweens and teens have been observed damaging our tennis courts and the equipment held within. Your yearly maintenance fees pay for this vandalism directly. Our goal is to keep these costs down while maintaining the nice amenities in our neighborhood for all residents. Please let your children know if they are observed abusing our courts and/or their equipment, the Constable will be called to escort them home. Anyone can report vandalism directly to the Constable at 281-463-6666, in the effort to keep our neighborhood’s common areas in good condition. Please note: the tennis courts are for tennis ONLY. How Do We Look?

Curb appeal has a big impact on your property value, even if your home is not for sale. Buyers evaluate the neighborhood, not just one house. Stand back from your house and take a close look to see if it needs a mini-makeover. Think about security as well. Has your shrubbery become overgrown, covering windows or blocking the sidewalk? Do low-hanging limbs obscure the front? Does the lawn have brown areas or weeds? Is the siding mildewed or paint peeling? You may want to ask a friend’s opinion; it is easy to overlook things we see everyday. Make plans now to spruce up. Cars parked in the street are also a turn-off to buyers. Make the extra effort to keep cars in the driveway. It looks better, and is safer for your neighbors and your car.

GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER

• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulfur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. A SPECIAL THANK YOU LETTER TO THE TAYLOR HIGH SCHOOL BAND

Taylor High School Band and Participants, My husband and I were so pleased to see how dedicated these young men and women were to get up so early on a sunny, bright Saturday morning to march down our streets in Nottingham. Philip and I never had children, but we have participated in the school district for over 23 years. The recognition of long hours these young men and women endured for practice in order to participate in such a live event. It truly appeared to be well conducted and arranged. What an amazing treat we were awoken to. Regardless, if someone was able to hear or not hear the music, it was certainly felt. We enjoyed our alarm that morning; to hear the sounds of drums in the distance, the feeling the vibration through our walls. The sound and vibration of marching feet in formation with instruments down our neighborhood. Neighbors were dashing out of their homes to this great attraction. Some taking pictures and video of this great spectacular event. And let’s not forget the participation of the EMS and Fire Department vehicles and the driver of that huge rig was such a thrill to see. And of course to all the parents, escorts, teachers and affiliates to help make all this happen for our community. Close your eyes; listen or feel the music, it will take you to many places without ever packing a bag. So, play on and don’t ever stop the music! Scouts Girl Scout Gold Award

Dayna Porter, a junior at Taylor High School, recently earned her Girl Scout Gold Award. Dayna’s project targeted homelessness in Houston and was called Bags for Hope. She and her volunteers sewed 200 small fabric drawstring bags and filled them with water bottles and various toiletry items like soaps, razors, shampoos and lotions that were donated by many friends and several hotels in the community. Once the bags were completed Dayna delivered them to two missions – the Star of Hope Mission and the Open Door Mission, which are both located in Houston. Dayna would like to thank everyone for the many donations that helped make her project possible.

Junior Girl Scout Troop 17430 recently spent a “Wild Overnight” with the White Tigers at the Downtown Aquarium. They earned a badge, learned about many types of animals and slept in the same room with the tigers. The girls paid for their trip with part of the proceeds from their 2012 cookie sale.

Fundraisers SUNSHINE KIDS FALL FEST AT THE RIVER

The Sunshine Kids are a non-profit organization dedicated to children with cancer. The children have the opportunity to go on vacations with other childhood cancer patients. It gives them the opportunity to share with others in their same situation and gives them a break in their treatment. The Gary Greene Champions office has an annual fundraiser in the northwest part of Houston. The route will also include a series of obstacles & “outreach” tasks, which include gathering care package items and stowing them in a cinched bag that each of the 500 participants will carry throughout the journey. The completed care package bags will be delivered to persons in need throughout the community as part of the CrossPoint Community Impact “Project Feed the Need.” Participant registration begins Sept. 9th continuing thru a firm deadline of Oct. 28th. Following the race is The Outdoor Market, a second annual event that features vendors, craftsmen, household items, children’s activities and concessions. DECIBELLES (A Barbershop Chorus)

We are a ladies daytime chorus with approximately 30 members. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 30 years. We sing old favorites and contemporary tunes arranged in the barbershop style. The four parts creating the barbershop sound are Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass. We rehearse Friday mornings from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center located at 2501 Westerland, off Westheimer and Gessner.
