SUPPLEMENT OF LAW ENFORCEMENT

Westlake Place HOA-Board of Directors have hired off duty deputies employed with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, as a supplement of law enforcement for our subdivision. PATROL SERVICE REPORT: Monitoring of stop signs has resulted in some citations issued and others for different traffic violations. We have had some complaints about people speeding and not coming to a complete stop. Drive slowly at the posted speed limit and make sure you come to a complete stop at all stop signs. The deputy has been notified of the complaints/concerns voiced by the residents and will be monitoring for this activity. Be on the look out for children crossing the streets, riding bikes, jogging; slow down while driving through our subdivision.

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a treat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbored or keep any unlicensed dog or cat or to allow them to become a stray.” Restraints are deﬁned as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question or 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle or 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained.

GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER

• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better.

The Sunshine Kids are a non-proﬁt organization dedicated to children with cancer. The children have the opportunity to go on vacations with other childhood cancer patients. It gives them the opportunity to share with others in their same situation and gives them a break in their treatment. We are a ladies daytime chorus with approximately 30 members. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 30 years. We sing old favorites and contemporary tunes arranged in the barbershop style. The four parts creating the barbershop sound are Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass. We rehearse Friday mornings from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center located at 2501 Westerland, off Westheimer and Gessner.
