PARKING LOT

The Board of Directors are pleased to announce that starting October 1, 2012, we will begin construction of a much needed parking lot that will be used for the pool and clubhouse. The parking lot will be located in the field area that is in between the pool and a neighboring home. This construction may last until the end of October, weather pending and during this time, we will not rent out the clubhouse or pool area. Currently, we are using the street for parking and as many of you are , this causes problems with driving down the street and allowing emergency vehicles to pass safely during the summer months or anytime the clubhouse is being rented. The Board would like to thank you in advance for your patience during the construction, as well as your continued community support.

OCTOBER…… DID YOU KNOW?

• Opal and Tourmaline are the birthstones? Characteristic is Hope? Flower is the Calendula? • Free rural delivery of mail began in the United States on October 1, 1896. • First “Model T” Ford put on the market on October 1, 1908. • The Soviet Union launched first artificial satellite on October 4, 1957. • President Harry S. Truman made the first presidential telecast address from the White House on October 5, 1947. • Chicago fire began, and burned for about 30 hours on October 8, 1871. • U.S. Naval Academy opened at Annapolis, Md. on October 10, 1845. • Columbus landed in America on October 12, 1492. • White House cornerstone laid on October 13, 1792. • Thomas Edison began first successful demonstration of his electric light on October 19, 1879. • U.S.S. GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER

• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulfur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches

to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

TAILGATING TIPS

Zip Lock Bags: Make sure that you get the freezer bag versions, you need something tough. These bags are incredibly versatile and do a great job when you want to keep food cold on the way to the tailgate. For example, flank steaks need longer marinating time. So, put them in a Zip Lock freezer bag with the dressing or whatever marinade you’re using, let them sit for two days in the fridge, then freeze them until the night before the game. Then take them out the day of - they will thaw, but are still very cold for the trip. So, there’s less danger of the meat turning, like it could in a cooler that isn’t fully chilled. The Old Foil Trick: This is one of the oldest in the book. Line your portable grill with aluminum foil for easy clean up and disposal of spent charcoal. You can use any kind, but I recommend using heavy-duty foil, as it is a little more durable and stronger. Freeze Your Water: I love this one because it can serve more than one purpose. If you get bottled water, freeze it. The day of the game, pop it in to the

Prep for Burgers: Make your burgers in advance and make sure they are no thicker than 3/4 inch; thick burgers can take a long time to cook. If you like to eat, stack patties. Freeze your patties between sheets of wax paper. When you’ve got the grill going, put the patties on (still frozen) and cook 3 to 4 minutes on each side. Then, dress ‘em up accordingly.

The Jumbo Drink: It’s always a good idea to bring a “jumbo” cup so it’s less trips to fill it on up. Make sure that your cup sticks out like a sore thumb or has distinguishable markings so that you know it’s yours. You wouldn’t want to drink out of someone else’s cup now, would you? Laminated Checklist: This is one that people keep saying is the tip that saves them all kinds of headaches. We’ve been tailgating for years and our checklist was laminated early on, because we knew that this would be the easy way to keep track of our list. As you pack for the game, simply check items on with a dry erase marker. When you’re done, wipe it off and you’ll be ready for the next game. Large Storage Bins: Oh, where would we be without the large storage bins? These magnificent totes keep your tailgating gear and equipment organized. It’s easy in and easy out all season long. If you need these bins, your local home improvement store has plenty of them. Warm Weather Ice Melt: If you happen to have your tailgate on a hot day, make sure that your beverages are very cold before you put them in the ice in your cooler. The fact is, if you have really cold drinks, the ice in the cooler doesn’t have to work as hard and it helps slow the ice melt. And on a hot day, it’s always good to be able to reach in to the cooler for a little ice. By Joe Cahn of www.tailgating.com

In 1960, Alfred Hitchcock was already famous as the screen’s master of suspense (and perhaps the bestknown film director in the world) when he released Psycho and forever changed the shape and tone of the screen thriller. Because it was filmed with tact, grace and art, Hitchcock didn’t just create modern horror, he validated it.

HALLOWEEN SAFTEY TIPS

Homeowners: • Replace burned-out bulbs in exterior lights. Leave your exterior lights on later than usual - perhaps even all night. • Clear the pathway. Make sure the path to your door is well lighted and your lawn is clear of things that could be tripped over, such as jack-o’-lanterns with lit candles, ladders, garden hoses, flowerpots, bikes and animal leashes. • Sweep wet leaves from sidewalks and stairs. • Keep excitable pets away from the door. You’ll have a safer and calmer house if you keep Fido away from where you are dispensing the treats. • Put your car in the garage. Lock your garage doors.

Teen and Adult Drivers: • Clear the driver’s view. Be sure that neither the driver’s costume nor anything else in the car obstructs the driver’s view. • Wear a seat belt. Be sure your passengers are wearing a safety belt, even if they have to take off part of their costume to attach it. • Drive slowly and defensively. Don’t assume that a pedestrian, especially an excited youngster in a costume, will move as you expect. Keep an eye out for trick-or-treaters darting out from parked cars.

ASPCA HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS FOR PETS & PET OWNERS

Halloween can be a traumatic and even dangerous time for your pet. Ms. Jacque Schultz, ASPCA Director of Companion Animal Services, offers some common-sense tips to protect your pet on Halloween: • Don’t leave your pet out in the yard on Halloween: There are plenty of stories of vicious pranksters who have teased, injured, stolen or even killed pets on this night. • Trick-or-treat candies are not for pets: Chocolate is poisonous to a lot of animals and tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers can be hazardous if swallowed. • Be careful of pets around a lit pumpkin: Pets may knock it over and cause a fire. Curious kittens especially run the risk of getting burned. • Don’t dress the dog in costume unless you know he loves it. Otherwise, it puts a lot of stress on the animal. • If you do dress up your dog, make sure the costume isn’t constricting, annoying or unsafe. Be careful not to obstruct their vision, even the sweetest dogs can get snappy when they can’t see what’s going on around them. • All but the most social dogs should be kept in a separate room during trick-or-treat visiting hours; too many strangers in strange garb can be scary for a dog. • Be careful your cat or dog doesn’t dart out through the open door. While this can be a fun time for people and pets alike, remember that your pets are depending on you to keep them safe from the more dangerous goblins and ghouls that this holiday brings.

BBQs, gardening, swimming pools, hikes... and mosquitoes. Enjoy the outdoors, but remember to protect yourself and your family from mosquito-borne diseases such as West Nile Virus. Your best defense against being bitten is simply to be prepared. Help Fight the Bite! · When outdoors, use an insect repellent containing the active ingredient DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535 to reduce exposure to mosquito bites. Always apply as directed on the label. Do not allow young children to apply repellent to themselves; have an adult do it for them. · If possible, wear long-sleeved clothing and long pants when outdoors at dawn and dusk, which are peak mosquito biting times. · Place mosquito netting over infant carriers when you are outdoors with infants. · Don’t feed the storm drains. Sweep up lawn clippings, leaves and tree limbs from sidewalks and driveways. · Remove/empty containers that can hold water such as flowerpots, buckets, tires, toys and plastic swimming pools. Birdbaths and pet water bowls should be changed at least twice a week. · Cover your boat or store in a covered place. Drain any standing water and make sure the bilge pump is working. Turn over canoes, kayaks and small boats to store upside down. · Keep rain gutters clean and draining and repair any outdoor household leaks. · When watering the lawn, be aware of any excess water that may accumulate. Fill in low areas around the yard. · When mosquitoes are noticed in your yard, spray with an outdoor mosquito spray. Be sure to use according to directions on the label. To control mosquitoes in your house, use a “flying insect spray.” Be sure to use according to directions on the label. · Household pets can be exposed to West Nile Virus (WNV). We are a ladies daytime chorus with approximately 30 members. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 30 years. We sing old favorites and contemporary tunes arranged in the barbershop style. The four parts creating the barbershop sound are Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass. We rehearse Friday mornings from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center located at 2501 Westerland, off Westheimer and Gessner. We love to have visitors and even more when you decide to join our chorus. We perform two types of shows each year. Currently we are singing a selection of patriotic songs, Johnny Mathis’ “Chances Are,” Perry Como’s “Hot Diggity Dog” and other fun tunes. You’ll be singing along with us before you know it. Our Christmas show includes old favorites, but also includes new fun tunes with props, narratives and choreography. We’ll begin preparing that program in October and book performances for the first two weeks in December. Come visit any Friday and see how much fun you can have with us. For additional information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or decibelle@comcast.net.

MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATER COMPANY 2012-2013 SEASON

KIMBeRLY AKIMBO, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, November 29-December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

The service begins with a procession of the animals and ends with an opportunity for each pet to receive an individual blessing. All pets should be held, caged or on leashes and all children with pets must be accompanied by an adult. Children may bring stuffed animals. Those whose pets do not travel well or do not get along well with other animals are asked to bring a photo of those pets. For more information, you can contact the church office at 281-492-8520.

CONGREGATION OR AMI GREAT COMEDY NIGHT

As comedian Allan Sherman once said, “you don’t have to be Jewish”…… to perform comedy at Congregation Or Ami, West Houston’s only conservative Synagogue, but you do have to be funny. On Saturday, October 13th, nationally renowned comedian Ross Bennett, will perform his unique brand of very funny standup comedy at the Synagogue, in an authentic comedy club setting, at 8:30 PM. Bennett, a one time West Point Cadet who left the Academy to become a Comedian (“probably the greatest service I will ever do for my country”), has been performing comedy for over 30 years. Over the years, Ross Bennett has appeared at the Friar’s Club and on many TV programs including “Evening at the Improv.” Bennett also co-wrote and stars in the very funny play, PASTRAMI ON RYE WITH MAYO, about the last 4 comedians performing in the Catskills. The October 13th performance is open to the entire West Houston / Katy community. Please purchase your tickets early, as seating is limited. Congregation Or Ami is located at 3443 Wilcrest Drive Houston, TX 77042. Tickets, which are $36 each, include a wonderful selection of desserts, wine, soda and coffee. Premium seating and group tables are available. For additional information, please check online at www.oramihouston.org or call 713-334-4300.
