Copperfield Crime Watch
This Halloween, be a Hero in Copperfield! If you see any suspicious persons/behavior/activity, call the Sheriff’s Department at 713-221-6000. We recently had one Copperfield Hero call in suspicious behavior, which led to multiple arrests! You too can become a Copperfield Hero. If you see any suspicious persons/behavior/activity call the Sheriff’s Department at 713-221-6000, option 1. For all emergencies, please call 911. Just like any crime fighting hero, we have tools to help you become a Copperfield Hero this Halloween! Save the Sheriff Department’s phone number on your mobile phone now. 713-221-6000. Be aggressive in calling in any suspicious behavior/activity! 1. On your smart phone, download the Sheriff Department’s iWatch app to report any crimes at: http://iwatchharriscounty.com/ 2. Follow us on Facebook at “Copperfield Safety and Security,” where we just received over 500 Likes! You can find a link to this at the recently updated Copperfield Crime Watch website at: www.copperfield.org/watch 3. Follow us on Twitter @CPRFLDWatch 4. Attend our Crime Watch meetings! Our next meeting is on October 10, 2012, at 6:30 PM, at the Copperfield Community Center. We meet on the second Wednesday of each month. 5. Tell your friends and neighbors! See Something, Say Something!! As a reminder, it is critical to be able to recognize something that is out of the ordinary. Although many residents don’t know all their neighbors, they usually know a few. They also become familiar with patterns of living, like when people leave for work, the cars normally seen in a driveway, etc. It is these patterns that become what we consider “normal.” Whenever we see something that is not normal, it should warrant our attention. It may be a vehicle parked in a driveway or street, it may be someone walking on the street from house to house or it may even look like someone who is working on a project. If anything looks suspicious, call the Sheriff (713-221-6000). If someone knocks on your door, make certain you know who it is before you open the door, it if sounds out of the ordinary, call the Sheriff. If you, in any way, think something may be suspicious, call it in to the Sheriff (713221-6000)! The Crime Watch Committee also asks you to consider becoming involved in our Crime Watch program. You may contact your village representative listed on the Copperfield website, in the Copperfield newsletter or visit one of our monthly committee meetings (Second Wednesday of each month at the Copperfield Community Center at 6:30 PM). You may also visit the Copperfield Safety and Security Facebook page. In order to receive updates, you may register at the Copperfield website at: www.copperfield.org/sl_register.php to stay informed and receive crime watch updates. Please continue to call in any and all suspicious activity you observe at any time, to the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number at 713-2216000 (Option 1 for dispatch). For life threatening emergencies, call 911.

(CPV) A WORD FROM THE BOARD
GARAGE SALE time is here again! The Fall garage sale for CPV is scheduled for Saturday October 13th. This is a good time to clean out all your unused clothing, goods, tools, books etc. and even Christmas decorations you no longer use. It is also a good time to meet some of the neighborhood. Times will be from dawn to dusk. Contact SCS or go to the Copperfield web site to learn about our next scheduled board meeting. If you have any concerns you want to address the board, please attend the board meeting. Contact SCS to include you on the agenda.
(CPV) POOL & PARKS COMMITTEE
The pool is officially closed. We want to apologize for anyone who thought it was open during the month of September. Even though it was written in the newsletter that the pool would closed after Labor Day weekend, many read on the CPV website that it would not close until after September end. The webmaster who kept up our website up-to-date moved and to date have we not found a replacement. If anyone is interested in volunteering for this job, please contact SCS. Due to little or no attendance after school commencing last year, the committee made the decision not to keep it open on week-ends during the month of September, as we had in the past. Again, I may remind all that the pool is CLOSED. Trespassing and jumping the fence to get inside the pool area is prohibited. A reminder that we do have cameras monitoring the pool while it is closed. No vandalism was reported for last month; however, there was an incident where a young man tried to jump the fence and fell breaking his arm. A reminder that no loitering after park hours is permitted. Parking after 9:00 pm is prohibited.

chair accessibility! Fire trucks are not able to get through when vehicles are parked on BOTH sides of the street and it becomes too narrow. Some homeowners are parking at the end of the cul- de- sac’s and not allowing people access to get their mail. These vehicles can and will be towed in an emergency at the homeowner’s expense.

If you are interested in being a volunteer, please call SCS and leave your name and telephone number and someone will be contacting you. We are still in need of block captains. Remember, if you see anything suspicious, call the Non-Emergency number below. Don’t wait until it is too late. REMINDER: It is imperative that we try to get involved. Keep your ears and eyes open and report any suspicious activity by calling the non-emergency police telephone number, 713-221-6000. BE PREPARED - GET INVOLVED! APPROVALS FOR MODIFICATIONS/ADDITIONS/CHANGES REMINDER THAT NO CHANGES CAN BE MADE WITHOUT PRIOR APPROVAL FROM THE ACC COMMITTEE! FORMS NEED TO BE FILLED OUT AND SUBMITTED FOR PRIOR APPROVAL. Roofing, painting, landscaping or any major changes must be approved by the Architectural Review Board. If you are not sure of the deed restrictions or what colors are allowable under the current deed restrictions, please contact SCS Management at 281-463-1777. Many homes are in desperate need of painting or mildew cleaning!
Despite our efforts to keep our neighborhood looking good, sending reminders, letters, etc. There are still some homeowners that keep their old utility trailers parked in their driveway, as well as inoperable vehicles. Unauthorized vehicles are still an eye sore throughout the neighborhood and these few homeowners continue to violate these restrictions and not take pride in our subdivision.
Any modification of the front yard etc. that is out of the ordinary should be approved before landscaping with the Architectural Board Committee at SCS. Please trim ALL bushes, trees, shrubs that are planted in the cross corner lots / section of the street! These must be kept trimmed and maintained for good / safe view of incoming traffic at all times! SCS will be looking closely at all intersections during their drive through to insure that this is in compliance with the deed restrictions. There has been reported instances where palms, trees or large shrubbery is overgrown and not providing a safe view of the cross intersection.
It is allowable to park your vehicle in the street; however, DO NOT park it in such a way that emergency vehicles cannot drive through or block wheel
You may obtain your form for Architectural Board approval by visiting the Copperfield website at www.copperfield.org or contact SCS.

Easton Commons Village (EC) Email Listing
The Easton Commons Home Owners Association is putting together an Email database of the residents in order to keep as many people informed of community happenings as possible. If you wish to be added to this Emailing List, please send an Email to easton.commons@yahoo.com. This list will be used strictly for the purpose of communicating with Easton Commons residents and will not be forwarded to a third party nor used for any other than the stated purpose. You may also use this means to ask questions, make suggestions or present complaints about the community.
(EC) Crime Watch
There has been a recent increase in criminal activity in and around Easton Commons. Our thanks go out to diligent residents who have been on the watch and have reported such activity to the Sheriff’s Department, so that several perpetrators were apprehended quickly. We would like to strengthen our vigilance and keep our community safe by getting more people involved. Anyone who would be interested in assisting in the Crime Watch effort in Easton Commons should send an email to easton.commons@yahoo.com and inform us of your interest.
(EC) Deed Restrictions
Every month SCS Management rides through Easton Commons to check for Deed Restriction violations. The Deed Restrictions set the standard on how our property is taken care of. A well maintained community will impact the property value of your home, which is most likely the largest investment you have.
Birkes Elem.
If you have received a letter from SCS regarding a Deed Restriction violation, please take care of the violation as soon as possible. If you are having problems getting an issue resolved, please contact SCS Management to inform them and to schedule a timeline for the correction. If you ignore the letter, additional letters are sent out which can result in additional expenses, which will be added to your account. If you are not sure of the Deed Restrictions, you can access them on www. copperfield.org under Easton Commons.
(EC) Trucks Prohibited
There are still incidences of large commercial trucks parking along the street near the entrance to the subdivision and adjacent to the park. The entrance to a residential neighborhood is no place for such vehicles, which are a safety problem, as well as unsightly and may interfere with traffic. Signs are posted that indicate that the parking of these vehicles is prohibited. When a truck parks in the restricted area, residents are encouraged to call the Harris County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number (713-221-6000) to make a report.
(EC) Pool News
The pool officially closed on September 30, 2012. It will reopen on May 1, 2013. We hope everyone had a great summer and many of you had a chance to use the pool and take a refreshing break from the summer heat.
(EC) Friendly Reminders
There have been a number of incidences of residents taking their trash out to the street for pickup too early and/or leaving the emptied containers on the street too long. Please remember that trash containers should not be placed on the street earlier than 6:00 PM of the day preceding pickup … 6:00 PM on Sunday for Monday pickup and 6:00 PM on Wednesday for Thursday pickup. The emptied containers should also be recovered from the street no later than 6:00 PM of the pickup days. Thank you for your cooperation.

The Grand Opening event for the park, which was previously announced to take place toward the end of this month, has been postponed. The reason for this postponement is that it was felt the opening would be a more memorable and pleasant experience for all if it were held in the springtime when the weather is still cool and several more amenities have been constructed which will make the park even better. More information will be forthcoming as we get closer to the opening time. Meanwhile, the park continues to be open for your enjoyment.

Our survey will be posted soon at www.middlegatevillage.org - our website. All registered residents will receive a reminder email as soon as it is available. The three-year contract for trash collection and recycling is under review right now and the board would like to hear from the residents before it votes on the issue. Please register on the website if you haven’t already, vote in the survey and email any input you would like to the board concerning this issue using the recycling@ middlegatevillage.org (email address).

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through October. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Southdown Village (SD) Fall is finally here!
School is back in session and the stifling Houston heat has finally taken its annual hiatus. Football, school and church activities have returned to zap all your time and energy, but you look forward to this time of year because you wouldn’t have any other way! If you’re looking for some “me” or “us” time, consider the fall festivals around Texas. Texas’ fall festivals cover just about any pastime or eclectic interest. If you’re a fan of sword fights, maidens and ale, we’ve got you covered. Fishermen, too, can get on the festival bandwagon. And if you happen to enjoy music, beer or wine … well, let’s just say the options are numerous.

Harris County is experiencing an increase of West Nile Virus infection in mosquitoes and, most notably, in the dead bird population. Set forth below are steps the Southdown HOA advises residents to take to minimize the chances contracting the West Nile Virus: • Dress appropriately when outdoors. • Dusk/Dawn: avoid exposure to mosquitoes when they are most active. • Remove or empty all outside containers that may hold water such as flowerpots, tires and toys. • Drain standing or stagnant water around your property if possible, including wading pools, pet dishes, bird baths, buckets and rain gutters. • Bird baths and pet water bowls should be changed at least twice a week. • Clean out gutters and make sure windows and doors have proper screening.

• Residents should protect themselves when outdoors, using insect repellents containing DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535 and apply as directed on the label. Most susceptible to contracting West Nile Virus are residents more than 50 years old or those with undeveloped or compromised immune systems. Many West Nile Virus infected humans have no symptoms. A small proportion develops mild symptoms that include fever, headache, body aches, skin rash and swollen lymph glands. Less than 1 percent of infected people develop more severe illness that includes meningitis (inflammation of one of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord) or encephalitis. The symptoms of these illnesses can include headache, high fever, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness and paralysis. Of the few people that develop encephalitis, a small proportion die but, overall, this is estimated to occur in less than 1 out of 1,000 infections.
(SD) Yard of Month
Congratulations to the Watson and Hall families, last month’s Southdown Yard of the Month winners. The Watson’s live at 15923 Ivy Bridge and the Hall’s are at 15839 River Garden. Each family was awarded a $25 gift card to an area home improvement store. It is great to see such pride in our neighborhood especially after such a rough summer. Reminder: be sure to let Graham Management know if you see a yard that deserves consideration for Yard of the Month.
(SD) Architectural Review Committee/Deed Restrictions
Please review the guidelines and submit an ARC application before beginning modifications to the exterior of your home. The ARC’s role is to ensure high standards continue to be met on all visible improvements and will be happy to assist any homeowners with questions on proposed improvements.
12
(SD) Drought-Damaged Trees
It is not too late to replace trees that did not survive the drought. Contact a reputable tree company for replacement advice and remember to consult the ARC to ensure that your tree is in compliance with the deed restrictions.
(SD) Streetlights
Copperfield pays a flat fee to Centerpoint Energy for our streetlights, no matter the condition of the lights. It is important to report any non-working streetlights, as Centerpoint will not charge us to fix them. These reports will help our neighborhood remain an attractive place to live. Please report nonworking lights to Centerpoint at 713-207-2222. Include the pole ID number when you call.
(SD) Crime Watch Halloween Safety Tips
Trick-or-Treaters • Be part of a group and don’t stray from the group, there is safety in numbers. • Don’t enter the home of a stranger. • Never accept rides from strangers. • Carry flash lights so you can be easily seen. • Don’t take shortcuts through backyards or parks. • Be alert, have fun but don’t let your guard down. The House • Keep a porch light on so trick-or-treaters will know to visit and can see where they are walking. • Remove yard clutter that trick-or-treaters may trip over. • Secure your pets to protect both the visitors and your pets. • Use battery powered jack-o’-lanterns instead of ones with candles. • Avoid giving homemade treats. Responsible parents do not allow their children to eat homemade treats unless they know the person making them.
October 2012
Copperfield
Parents • Young children should be accompanied by an adult. • Check your child’s candy before they consume it. When in doubt, throw it out! • Feed your children before they set out. This should help discourage them from trying their treats before you can check them. • Know where your child is and whom they are with. • Buy flame retardant costumes and consider using make-up rather than masks. A mask may obscure your child’s vision. • Costumes should be light in color or have reflective tape put on them. • Costumes should be made from light materials to avoid dehydration and other heat related issues.

(SD) Southdown Amenities
• Backdoor trash pick-up for household items on Monday and Thursday (heavy items) mornings. Grass clippings and yard waste must be placed at the curb. Please do not place your grass clipping at the curb before the night preceding pickup. It changes the perception of our neighborhood and is a common complaint of your neighbors. • Recycling pick up is on Thursday mornings. The recycling program was significantly expanded in 2010. We encourage you to reference the new guidelines at http://www.copperfield.org/southdown_village.php - Look for the Recycling Information section on the page. • Southdown Board meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 6:30 pm, in the Copperfield Community Center. Contact our management company to be placed on the agenda. • Various committees overseeing different aspects of our community meet periodically. Please think of volunteering your time to make your community a better place. Volunteer opportunities are available with most committees, including the Pool and Parks, Architectural Review, Deed Restrictions and Crime Watch committees.

will need to double their body mass to prepare for migration. Don’t have a feeder or not sure how to properly maintain one? Well, if you’re interested in learning more, read on: • Numerous types of feeders can be found at the local hardware sources (Ace, Lowes, Home Depot), as well as many on-line sources via a simple Google search. • Keep in mind getting several smaller feeders as opposed to one large feeder will attract more birds and reward you with more visits. • You do not need to purchase a special feeder mix, simply mix your own by adding 1 part hot water to 4 parts white granular sugar. DO NOT add honey, red food coloring or artificial sweeteners. • Place the feeders in the shade to prevent fermentation. • If you do get more than one feeder, place secondary feeders so that each is not visible to the other as hummingbirds are territorial during feeding and will “dominate” preventing others from making visits. • Keep the feeder clean and well stocked - change the solution twice a week in warmer weather or if it becomes cloudy. • Of course having natural nectar, the birds can feed from will also garner visits to your garden, so planting fall flowers that provide nectar will reward you and the birds nicely. Choose flowers that are brightly colored (red, orange and pink) and tubular in shape, such as Honeysuckle or Esperanza.
(WC) OCTOBER GARDENING TIPS LAWN/GARDEN CARE
Insect and fungus damage should be first and foremost in our lawn and garden care considerations as we are moving out of the intense heat and into cooler times. • Insect Control - You should consider applying a fall treatment to eliminate late but never absent party arrivals such as mosquitoes and cinch bugs to your lawn and garden areas. It is not yet cool enough to see significant population declines. • Aphids may be seen in greater numbers, especially upon hibiscus. Utilizing all-natural soapy water solution works great and does not damage the plant. • Fungus Control - As was stated in September, October will really bring on the ideal conditions for an increase in Brownpatch fungus, especially when evening temperatures fall below 60 degrees. • Change your watering schedule by eliminating any evening watering sessions. Leaving the lawn wet in the evening is an open invitation for Brownpatch to appear.
16
October 2012
Copperfield
• Alter your fertilizer in use to limit the amount of nitrogen to only a “slowrelease” combination. • For treatment, Fertilome liquid systemic, Daconil or a double dose or Terrachlor should help stop any apparent signs from growing or increasing. A liquid treatment works best once fungus signs are apparent or obvious. • Flowers - If you are thinking ahead to next spring already in regards to all things that bloom, October is the ideal time to lay Bluebonnet and Indian Paintbrush seed. Seedlings need to take root and establish a root base in the fall and getting the seeds to germinate is necessary to achieve this. Getting seed into the ground before soil temperatures fall below 70 degrees is imperative. If the seed laid down does not have a chance to germinate it may do so when temperatures rise in the spring, but fall seeding will usually produce a more robust showing. Remember Halloween brings a flood of treat-seekers to our neighborhood – take care to watch for children and be sure any yard decorations placed out are safe and installed securely in case of inclement weather. Wait until the 3rd week of October to place any carved pumpkins outside – any sooner and the warm weather will quickly decompose your work of art. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• End of Subdivision News •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Please view our website (CopperfieldCoalition.COM) for the details and results of that meeting. We would like to thank all the Guest Speakers, Special Guests, Residents and Businesses for participating in this meeting. If You See Something, Say Something “If you see something, say something” is the slogan of Homeland Security. The Harris County has also adopted this motto, if you see something, say
Copperfield
something no matter how insignificant you may think it is. If you are the slightest bit suspicious, call the Harris County non-emergency number and report it. If it is life threatening or an emergency, of course dial 911. The deputies would rather show up to find out it is nothing than show up later, after a crime has been committed, then find it is too late. Let’s all take a pro-active stance. Let’s stop crime before it happens. Make a call! Nonemergency number: 713-221-6000. Green Medians on SH6 The Coalition has secured green medians on SH6 from FM 529 to just north of Pebble Lake Dr. TX-DOT will be installing dirt-filled medians with sod instead of black concrete. Once TX-DOT is completed with their project, the communities that choose, may then landscape as they see fit as long as it is in the safety parameters of TX-DOT’s guidelines. We are continuing to work on the section between FM 529 to West Little York, as well as Pebble Lake to Jack Rabbit Rd. Monthly Meetings Open to All The Copperfield Coalition meetings are held on the third week (check website for exact date) of every month from 7 PM to 9 PM at the Copperfield Community Center, 15409 Willow River Drive. The meeting is in the board room; please come in the main door. Please check the website for any last minute cancelations and/or changes before attending. Come to one of our meetings and find out what we are all about. If you are interested in protecting the integrity of Copperfield, our lifestyle and our property values, then please join us at one of our meetings. Volunteers Needed If you are interested in joining the board, being on an advisory committee or becoming a member of the Copperfield Coalition, then please come to one of our meetings or contact us at Anthony@CopperfieldCoalition.COM Sincerely, The Board of Directors, CopperfieldCoalition.COM

Brothers There is something special about being able to play football with your brother. The Warriors took the field for the home opener with five sets of brothers among the 46 team members. When the players are asked for words to describe our team, one word that often comes up is brotherhood. It is truly becoming that, both on and off the field, but for ten players in particular, it runs very deep. Cy-Christian to Host K-12 Fall Preview On Thursday, November 8th, from 7-8:30 PM, prospective families will be given the opportunity to visit Cypress Christian School to gather information and tour of the campus. The Admissions Department will begin accepting applications for 2013-2014 on this date. For more information, visit CypressChristian.org or call 281-469-7745.

Not an Average Cy-Christian Football Practice Early in each season, Warrior football players take a day of practice to do something a little different. They leave the pads in the lockers and load the bus to travel to another part of town. Over 50 football players, coaches and dads invade a neighborhood that could use more smiles and they host a football camp. This year, 30+ kids from Houston’s First Baptist Faith Center learned a little about football while having lots of fun. Scotty Sanders has worked at the Faith Center for years and was impressed with how the CyChristian players engaged and interacted with the kids.

Coach Spenn’s goal for his coaches is for them to be transformational. He said, “To do this, we have to think outside the box. Some may see it as a loss of a practice, but the reality is that the impact on the team will have a far greater value than running a few extra plays in a practice.” Many of our players were greatly impacted and will remember days like this for a lifetime. It was evident that the kids from the neighborhood had a great time based on the smiles on their faces. The love of Christ was shared through the game of football and that is the definition of true success.

For your convenience, information is posted on the district website. If you have questions or need additional information, please go to www.hcphes.org and view 2012 West Nile Virus Response.

Chandwani proposed for every Key Clubber to change the world by being a SUPERhero - Speaking, Uniting, Preparing, Executing and Revising. Her oratory taught Key Club members to follow the five steps in order to have a substantial impact on their communities. Additionally, she included information about the significance of The Eliminate Project, an organization determined to eradicate maternal/neonatal tetanus (MNT) from the world by 2015. 160 babies die daily, but MNT has been eliminated in twenty countries since 2000. Chandwani’s speech speaks to the impact of MNT and how it is very possible to stop the disease. The accolade was announced at the end of the International Convention before Key Club members from around the world. Chandwani said, “I was honored to receive such a distinction because The Eliminate Project is something I’ve been working on for the past two years and I’ve been involved with a lot of fundraisers for the project.” Moreover, Chandwani was selected to serve as the Convention Liason during the upcoming school year. In her position, she will be in charge of coordinating the 2013 District Convention - choosing the theme, encouraging participation and planning the specifics of the weekend. On her Tex-O-Key blog, Chandwani wrote, “DCON is a way for us all to come together at the end of the year to celebrate our dedicated service with passion, excitement and enthusiasm. DCON is extremely important because of the diffusion of ideas and practices that takes place.” The Cypress Falls club sponsor, Kathie Kiklas, said, “Roshni has been an enthusiastic member of our Key Club and I couldn’t be prouder of everything she has accomplished.” We look forward to many great things ahead from Chandwani.
Chandwani poses with the rest of the Texas-Oklahoma Key Club District Board (left to right: Kevin Duong - District Secretary, Lindyn Davis - District Editor, Chandwani, Maci Slater - District Treasurer, Brian O’Hara - District Governor).
CYPRESS FALLS STUDENT WINS BIG AT KEY CLUB INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION
From July 4th to 8th, Cypress Falls Key Club members traveled to Orlando, Florida for the annual International Convention (ICON). At ICON, Key Club volunteers from around the world unite to participate in workshops, contests and charity events. Rising junior, Roshni Chandwani, won second place in an oratorical contest that questioned how the average Key Clubber could bring a global campaign, such as The Eliminate Project, to their school and local community.
Copperfield
Though the Cypress Falls Key Club has consistently won big at the district and international conventions, its members have kept their eye on the real prize - making an impact on their community. Throughout the summer, members have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, K2 Academy and more. The Cypress Falls Key Club is looking for even more events where they can lend a helping hand. If your organization is in need of devoted volunteers or if you’d like to make a donation to The Eliminate Project, be sure to contact the Cypress Falls Key Club President, Gabi Bradshaw, at gabi.bradshaw.kc@gmail.com .

CYPRESS FALLS KEY CLUB RECRUITS INCOMING FRESHMAN
With the advent of the 2012 school year right before our eyes, the Cypress Falls Key Club has been busily occupied with the most important mission of the year - recruiting members. For every club, their main source of new volunteers is the influx of freshmen that enter the school’s double doors each fall semester. Though many current members reach out to friends and family to join the organization, not all prospective Key Clubbers are lucky enough to be in contact with someone who is already involved in the program.

We meet each Sunday at
Opening Fall 2013 Our new facility will be located at West Little York & Langham Way (behind Harmony School of Discovery) Because of this, the Cypress Falls Key Club goes fishing for new members every year at Fish Camp. Many of the incoming freshman are anxious yet inquisitive about what’s to come during the next four years of their lives. As upperclassmen that have been there ourselves, it’s our job to make them feel welcome in our school. Further, as committed Key Club members, it’s even more important for us to treat others with the respect, integrity and care that are characteristic of the organization we’re a part of. At Fish Camp, Key Club members enthusiastically greet and befriend the incoming ninth graders to ease some of the worries they feel about entering a new phase in their lives. A nervous freshman-to-be last year, I remember hearing the energetic chanting of “Join Key Club!” and wondering why anyone would choose to join a club of key-makers. My curiosity got the best of me, nonetheless and I decided to take a closer look. The President of the organization was enthusiastically telling a small group of students about their numerous volunteer events. As I watched her speak, I determined that I wanted to find something I could be equally passionate about and signed my name to become a new member. Meeting an amicable person or discovering a new niche can make a big, scary school a much nicer placer to be. The recruitment of new members at Fish Camp helps incoming freshmen meet new friends, build their character and recognize a passion for volunteering while also having a lasting impact on the community. The more volunteers, the more of an impact. What’s greater is that in four years, these freshmen will be leading the Cypress Falls Key Club. In four years, they’ll be crossing the stage and leaving the halls of Cypress Falls to become adults. In four years, the concepts they learn as a volunteer will be something they can apply to the real world. Key Club members who learn to do “whatever it takes” to help those around them in high school will carry those skills throughout life and help people wherever they can - and that’s what Key Club is all about.

GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINO COUNCIL COPPER CORNERS SERVICE UNIT
Copper Corners Service Unit held Rally Nights in September at Birkes, Fiest and Lowery Elementary schools to recruit new leaders and form new troops. Girl Scouting is open to all girls between the ages of 5 (must be in kindergarten) and 18 who are willing to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Copper Corners Service Unit serves girls in the residence areas for Birkes, Fiest and Lowery Elementary schools, Aragon and Labay Middle schools and the corresponding high schools. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Don’t forget that many of our most exciting opportunities are available to older girls and that the Ambassador program is designed for older girls whose schedules or interests may not allow for participation in a troop. Girl Scouts in the U.S.A. have been celebrating our 100th birthday this year with a variety of events and activities. Many of our girls and their families attended the B.I.G. Event on September 29th. Visiting the booths and exhibit areas was a wonderful chance to see the different activities and opportunities available. If you were there, you might have seen the Green Starlettes dance and drill team perform, listened to musical performances by council choirs and found out about the backpacking and equitation programs. There were a lot of other areas and interest groups to explore. Many of us also participated in the service projects by bringing donations for Cypress Cares (lip balm, playing cards and travel size packs of baby wipes) or for the Houston Humane Society (hand sanitizers, leashes, collars and towels). It won’t be time to order Girl Scout cookies until January, but our Fall Product Sale began on September 14th. There are 14 different kinds of candy and nut products to choose from and they are all delicious! Whether your

Bishop Marc Calvert, who ministers to one of these congregations, said, “Members of the Church in Fairfield have met in a church building in Waller for about 20 years. As Fairfield has grown and developed, so also has the number of Church members in this area. There are now approximately 250 Latter-day Saints living in the Fairfield community and they are looking forward to worshiping much closer to home.” The new red and beige brick structure has a traditional architectural style accented with Texas stone. The facility will include a chapel (sanctuary) for Sunday worship services, classrooms for gospel study and a gymnasium with a hardwood basketball court. When completed, the building will also host youth activities on Wednesday evenings, including meetings for several Churchsponsored troops of the Boy Scouts of America. Submitted By Chris Fults

In order to make our fundraiser as successful as possible, we are looking to the good neighbors of our Community for their support. There are many ways in which you can contribute to the Pink Tie Affair as either a sponsor or a donor. The Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization as defined by the Internal Revenue Code, Section 501(c) 3 and all qualified donations made to ZTA Foundation are tax-deductable, so please consider helping us make a difference in the lives of women everywhere. The Pink Tie Affair fundraising event, through the ZTA Foundation, supports breast cancer education and awareness, the Komen Race for the Cure® Survivor program, scholarships, educational programming and leadership development. Through our affiliations with The Susan G. Komen Foundation, Yoplait, The NFL and Self Magazine, the ZTA Foundation has donated millions of dollars to this worthy cause. As one of the leading causes of death in women, breast cancer affects us all. We had a great turnout for last year’s first annual, raising $7000 toward our cause and anticipate an even better 2012. If you are interested in purchasing tickets or other ways of contributing to the event, please contact Natalie Taylor at daisemail@comcast.net or www.cypresszta.com, our website. We hope to have your support and to see you there!

Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

STANDUP FOR KIDS
How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S.

OCTOBER IS NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) program is dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of the early detection of breast cancer through a nationwide campaign. NBCAM started as a weeklong campaign in 1985 with 2 founding members. Today the American Cancer Society is one of many national public service organizations, professional associations and government agencies that form the NBCAM Board of Sponsors. During October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the member organizations of the Board of Sponsors join forces to spread the message that early detection of breast cancer followed by prompt treatment saves lives. The American Cancer Society recommends early detections. Women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. The third Friday in October each year is National Mammography Day, first proclaimed by President Clinton in 1993. On this day or throughout the month, women are encouraged to make a mammography appointment. To find a facility in your area, please call: American Cancer Society (800) 227-2345 National Cancer Institute (800) 4-CANCER Or visit nbcam.org or www.cancer.org for more information.
