GARAGE SALE

The Association will be holding their fall garage sale on Saturday, October 13, 2012, so gather up your items to sell! This will be a oneday event and the Association will have the banners/signs put out one week in advance at the entrances off Queenston and FM 529.

RECYCLING

Green Arrow Recycling (on Hwy. 90 on left about a mile or so west of Katy High school) takes lots of stuff including batteries and yes, even glass, which is the easiest recyclable. All Katy schools take paper and cardboard and many churches do as well to fund activities.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION AND MEETING NOTICES

If you are interested in receiving Board meeting email notifications, please go to the Crest website at www.crest-management.com and go to communities, then scroll down to Sheffield and there you will find a place to sign up with your email address and if you scroll to the bottom, you can obtain community information, legal documents or applications as well.

COMMUNITY WEBSITE

Sheffield has a website: www.neighborhoodlink.com/Sheffield there you will find community information posted there as well as forms and documents for the association.

PREPAYING 2013 MAINTENANCE ASSESSMENTS

We have had some homeowners state how difficult it is to pay the maintenance fees at the end of year due to the holidays and/or taxes that are also due at the time we need to collect the maintenance assessments. We want to be sure that you know you can PRE-PAY to avoid late fees and penalties. Just send a check to Crest (made payable to Sheffield HOA) and write “2013 fees” in the memo portion of your payment and they will begin crediting you for next year. This is something new that the Association is offering to those who may need to make several payments and would keep your account in good standing rather than becoming delinquent and struggle during the year.

LITTER PICKUP

Welcome Katie and Stephanie!

Hair • Color • Nails Stephanie Stylist

TRASH

Please note that Sheffield garbage pickup is twice weekly, on Tuesday and Friday (heavy trash day). Please DO NOT put your trash out at the curb until the night before pickup (Monday and Thursday). Tree trimmings should be in three-foot lengths and tied together if possible. Items such as televisions and computer monitors should not be put in the trash, but instead taken to a recycling center or to a trash site that takes these items. Harris County has special trash events 1-2 times yearly. Contact the Precinct 3 office for more information. Carpet and padding are also items that the trash company will not take. Please have your contractor dispose of these for you. Also, please do not store your trashcans in plain sight of the street. Keep them in your garage, behind your fence or elsewhere out of sight. Thank you for your cooperation.

Katie Stylist/UP DO Specialist

Just a reminder, if you see trash in the neighborhood, please be a good neighbor and pick it up and dispose of it properly. Otherwise, then trash will either end up in someone’s shrubbery or trees or else get washed down the storm sewers, contributing to mosquito breeding and backing up of the storm drains in times of heavy rains. Thanks to those of you who regularly pick up other people’s litter.

A number of Sheffield residents either walk their dogs or let their cats run loose. It is a violation of deed restrictions to let your pet leave their poop on another resident’s lawn or the common grounds (they belong to all of Sheffield’s residents). If your pet does have to go to the bathroom, please be courteous and carry a plastic bag (store bags or the newspaper delivery bag are great for this), pick up the pile by placing your hand inside the bag, grab the pile through the bag, tie the bag up and throw it in the garbage. Leaving your pet waste around encourages the possible spread of pet disease, such as Parvo, which can be life threatening, or parasites.

VANDALISM

Remember, if you see suspicious activity in or around Sheffield, please immediately call the Harris County Sheriff’s Department at 713-221-6000. Also, let Connie at Crest Management know at 281579-0761, ext. 613.

CONTACTING CREST MANAGEMENT & THE BOARD

If you have a matter you would like to discuss with Crest, Connie Navarre is our representative and can be reached at 281-579-0761, ext. 613 or by email at connie@crest-management.com . If you wish to meet with Connie or her assistant, Surron Stokes, please call Crest and make an appointment to ensure they are available to assist you.

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU

GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER

• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

HALLOWEEN SAFTEY TIPS

Teens and Adolescents• Travel in groups. Go only to the houses of people you know. Younger children should be accompanied by a responsible older person. • Carry flashlights. • Carry a mobile phone for quick communication. • Stay focused on your surroundings. If harassed or threatened, go into the closest store/restaurant and ask to use the phone. Call parents and/or police. Let the proprietors know that your group feels unsafe. • Be very cautious around jack-o’-lanterns with lit candles. Keep an eye out for flames and/or candles on porches. • Consider alternatives to trick-or-treating. Alternatives include house or school parties or volunteering at a haunted-house project. Teen and Adult Drivers: • Clear the driver’s view. Be sure that neither the driver’s costume nor anything else in the car obstructs the driver’s view. • Wear a seat belt. Be sure your passengers are wearing a safety belt, even if they have to take off part of their costume to attach it. • Drive slowly and defensively. Don’t assume that a pedestrian, especially an excited youngster in a costume, will move as you expect. Keep an eye out for trick-or-treaters darting out from parked cars. Homeowners: • Replace burned-out bulbs in exterior lights. Leave your exterior lights on later than usual - perhaps even all night. • Clear the pathway. Make sure the path to your door is well lighted and your lawn is clear of things that could be tripped over, such as jack-o’-lanterns with lit candles, ladders, garden hoses, flowerpots, bikes and animal leashes. • Sweep wet leaves from sidewalks and stairs. • Keep excitable pets away from the door. You’ll have a safer and calmer house if you keep Fido away from where you are dispensing the treats. • Put your car in the garage. Lock your garage doors.

OCTOBER IS NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) program is dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of the early detection of breast cancer through a nationwide campaign. NBCAM started as a weeklong campaign in 1985 with 2 founding members. Today the American Cancer Society is one of many national public service organizations, professional associations and government agencies that form the NBCAM Board of Sponsors. During October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the member organizations of the Board of Sponsors join forces to spread the message that early detection of breast cancer followed by prompt treatment saves lives. The American Cancer Society recommends early detections. Women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. The third Friday in October each year is National Mammography Day, first proclaimed by President Clinton in 1993. On this day or throughout the month, women are encouraged to make a mammography appointment. To find a facility in your area, please call: American Cancer Society (800) 227-2345 National Cancer Institute (800) 4-CANCER Or visit nbcam.org or www.cancer.org for more information.

October 31st - Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, 8 PM, Miller Outdoor Theatre - Hitchcock’s 1960 horror classic, infamous for its shower scene but immortal for its contribution to the horror genre, screens at Miller on Halloweeen night. In 1960, Alfred Hitchcock was already famous as the screen’s master of suspense (and perhaps the bestknown film director in the world) when he released Psycho and forever changed the shape and tone of the screen thriller. Because it was filmed with tact, grace and art, Hitchcock didn’t just create modern horror, he validated it.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. CYPRESS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL NOT AN AVERAGE CY-CHRISTIAN FOOTBALL PRACTICE

Early in each season, Warrior football players take a day of practice to do something a little different. They leave the pads in the lockers and load the bus to travel to another part of town. Over 50 football players, coaches and dads invade a neighborhood that could use more smiles and they host a football camp. This year, 30+ kids from Houston’s First Baptist Faith Center learned a little about football while having lots of fun. Scotty Sanders has worked at the Faith Center for years and was impressed with how the Cy-Christian players engaged and interacted with the kids. Coach Spenn’s goal for his coaches is for them to be transformational. He said, “To do this, we have to think outside the box. Some may see it as a loss of a practice, but the reality is that the impact on the team will have a far greater value than running a few extra plays in a practice.” Many of our players were greatly impacted and will remember days like this for a lifetime. It was evident that the kids from the neighborhood had a great time based on the smiles on their faces. The love of Christ was shared through the game of football and that is the definition of true success.

BROTHERS There is something special about being able to play football with your brother. The Warriors took the field for the home opener with five sets of brothers among the 46 team members. When the players are asked for words to describe our team, one word that often comes up is brotherhood. It is truly becoming that, both on and off the field, but for ten players in particular, it runs very deep. CY-CHRISTIAN TO HOST K-12 FALL PREVIEW On Thursday, November 8th, from 7-8:30 PM, prospective families will be given the opportunity to visit Cypress Christian School to gather information and tour of the campus. The Admissions Department will begin accepting applications for 2013-2014 on this date. For more information, visit CypressChristian.org or call 281-469-7745.

Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

STEEPLE PLACED ON NEW CHURCH UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN FAIRFIELD

On Aug. 30th, a 40-foot steeple was placed atop a new church under construction in Fairfield. The new meetinghouse is being built by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 21521 Fairfield Place Drive, next to Salyards Middle School. Scheduled for completion in January 2013, it will serve three local congregations of Latter-day Saints, commonly called Mormons.

Bishop Marc Calvert, who ministers to one of these congregations, said, “Members of the Church in Fairfield have met in a church building in Waller for about 20 years. As Fairfield has grown and developed, so also has the number of Church members in this area. There are now approximately 250 Latter-day Saints living in the Fairfield community and they are looking forward to worshiping much closer to home.”

The new red and beige brick structure has a traditional architectural style accented with Texas stone. The facility will include a chapel (sanctuary) for Sunday worship services, classrooms for gospel study and a gymnasium with a hardwood basketball court. When completed, the building will also host youth activities on Wednesday evenings, including meetings for several Church-sponsored troops of the Boy Scouts of America. Submitted By Chris Fults

Family members are loosely defined to include married or unmarried partners, parents, siblings, aunts/uncles—anyone connected to the veteran who is suffering a psychological effect related to the veteran’s service. Banyan Counseling Network has an office located near the North Cypress Medical Center and is trained to provide individual and family counseling. Family support groups are also currently forming. La Leche League is an international nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing education, information, support and encouragement to women who want to breastfeed. Breastfeeding is a simple and natural process, but you may need support and information on the correct positioning of the baby at the breast, working and breastfeeding, avoiding problems and overcoming any difficulties that may occur. Knowing other women who have breastfed their babies can be helpful and reassuring. Having accurate, up-to-date information is also important. Attending La Leche League meetings can help you learn about breastfeeding from other nursing mothers. At these monthly meetings, mothers share not only their questions and concerns but also the benefits and joys of breastfeeding. Being in touch with La Leche League can give you the network of support you need.

MOTHERS OF YOUNG CHILDREN (MYC)

The moment a newborn baby wraps their tiny hand around a parent’s finger is a pivotal moment in the life of any parent. The baby not only tugs on the finger, but on the parent’s heart as well. It is in that awesome moment that the parent begins to understand the unconditional and abounding love that God has for each of us. But soon after the little miracle arrives so do all the questions and sometimes, without any clear answers. The Mothers of Young Children (MYC) group was organized by St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church to minister to families with young children throughout the Northwest Houston community. Both stay at home and working parents are invited to participate in the group. The group supports and prays for one another, shares information and ideas on child rearing and builds lasting friendships. Most importantly, MYC’s focus is on God and God’s presence in families. The MYC ministry includes: • Friday morning Bible study at 9:30 AM (childcare provided!) • Monthly Kids Night In • Mom’s Night Out • Playgroups throughout the year • Service ministries • Online discussion forum

Activities are held during the day, when at-home mothers need support and interaction the most. Children are always welcome. We also organize community service projects throughout the year. Our members are moms of various ages and backgrounds with kids of all ages (newborn to high school age). Our business meetings are held the 2nd Thursday of every month. If you are interested or would like more information, please visit our web site at www.momsclub. org or contact Stephanie Hvezdos, President, at whizwine@aol.com or 713-444-0697 for location, directions or any questions. We are happily welcoming new moms at each meeting. Hope to see you there!
