(AT) WEST NILE VIRUS – HELPFUL INFO

Your Association, County and City entities are continuing the effort to deter increased mosquito population and the spread of the West Nile Virus by spraying residential areas regularly. But we want to share the following information with all of you to spread awareness of this important issue and how you can protect yourselves and families. What Are The Symptoms Of West Nile Virus (WNV)? Most people infected with WNV will not show symptoms. Some, however, may have a fever, headache, body aches and swollen lymph nodes. A small number may develop encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the spinal cord). Although rare, death can occur. How Is It Spread? West Nile virus is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. There is no recorded proof of it being passed from person-to-person, animalto-animal or animal-to-person.

Where Has It Been and Where Is It Going? West Nile virus is commonly found in Africa, Eastern Europe, West Asia and the Middle East. It was first detected in the United States in 1999, during which time there was an outbreak of it in New York. By mid-June of 2002, it had traveled to the eastern portion of Texas. Since then, it has been reported in mosquitoes, birds (such as blue jays and crows), horses and humans in Texas. There has also been a continued westward movement of the virus. Can It Be Treated? There is no specific treatment for WNV infection. In a serious case, a person may have to be hospitalized and given supportive treatment along with good nursing care.

Hair • Color • Nails

Welcome Katie and Stephanie!

Can animals be infected with WNV? Yes. However, the only domestic animals that appear to be harmfully affected by WNV are equines, such as horses. Wild birds can also develop severe symptoms and may have large die offs.

How Can I Reduce My Chances Of Being Infected? 1. Stay indoors at dawn, dusk and in the early evening. 2. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants whenever you are outdoors. 3. Apply insect repellent sparingly to exposed skin. An effective repellent may contain 35% DEET. Repellents may bother the eyes and mouth, so try to not apply them to the hands of children. 4. Spray clothing with insect repellents containing permethrin or DEET, as mosquitoes may bite through thin clothing. 5. Whenever you use an insect repellent be sure to read and follow the directions for use that are printed on the product label. 6. It does not appear that a person can get WNV from handling live or dead infected birds. However, use gloves or double plastic bags when handling any dead animals, including birds. 7. If you leave your house windows open, make sure they have screens. 8. Do not allow water to stagnate in old tires, flowerpots, trash containers, swimming pools, birdbaths, pet bowls, etc.

(AT) BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETINGS

The Board of Directors meet on a monthly basis and residents are welcome to attend. The Board generally meets at the West Houston Church of Christ on West Road, however reschedule dates and locations sometimes occur due to scheduling conflicts. You can find the meeting dates at www.highsierramanagementonline.com on the website calendar. Please remember to contact High Sierra Management prior to or on the scheduled meeting date to ensure there are no cancellations or location changes. The minutes of the meetings, as well as monthly financial reports, governing documents, forms, community events and news, etc. can also be found on the website for homeowner review.

(AT) PET POLICY AND ETIQUETTE

We understand your pets are very important to you and want to be a pet friendly community. However, we have received many complaints that there are pet owners not following the rules of the community when it comes to pet etiquette. Please, be aware and make a conscious effort to the adhere to the following guidelines: • Only two pets per household - refer to governing documents regarding height and weight limits. • Pick up pet waste and discard properly. • Do not allow pets to roam around the community unrestrained - it’s the law! This includes cats too! • Do not allow dogs to bark continuously disturbing neighbors.

The Yard of the Month Program is back in Copperbrook! Get your creative juices flowing and beautify your lawns. The HOA will be recognizing a yard each season; i.e., winter, spring, summer and fall and additionally, during the Christmas holidays, yards will be judged for best decorations. For those who are interested in participating, the following criteria must be met: • Landscaping must be well maintained. • Fences should be in good repair. • Extra investment in property, which might include seasonal plants and yard decorations. • Trash receptacles should be properly stored out of view from the street. • Yards must be litter and clutter free. • Deed restrictions must be followed. NOTE: Copperbrook residents can view the deed restrictions by going to copperbrookhoa.org and clicking on Governing Documents. To log in, you will need your account number, which is on your annual homeowners dues receipt or you can request it from AMI at 713-9321122. Yards will be judged by a panel of 6-8 community members. Winners will receive a gift certificate and signage in their yard for the season! The first announcement will be our fall winner this October.

(CB) FYI

As you may have noticed, the lights at 3 three of the entranceway monuments have not been working for several weeks. The lighting was installed when the community was built and needs to be repaired or replaced. After weighing both options, the HOA approved replacing the existing lighting at the entranceway monuments with better quality LED lighting.

REMINDERS FROM YOUR COPPERBROOK HOA

• The Harris County Leash Law requires that dogs must be restrained when in public. This means they should be on a leash or physically held by their owner. • It is also against the law to allow cats to roam the neighborhood. Did you know that Dr. Michael Fox, the world renowned veterinarian, stated that an outdoor cat has a life span of only 3 years? • It is against the law to breed dogs for sale without a kennel license. • The HOA will report violations of these laws to the appropriate authorities. • When walking your dog, please pick up the waste. • Keep trashcans out of sight from the street and put them on the curb no earlier than the evening before garbage collection day and remove them no later than the evening of that collection day. Filled trashcans that remain on the curb or in front of the garage for several days present a health risk to your family and the community. Be aware that trash is not picked up on holidays. In cases where filled trashcans are not removed within a reasonable time, the HOA will report the violation to the Harris County Public Health Service. Your HOA Board members are working diligently to keep Copperbrook a beautiful and safe place to live. Please do your part to observe the deed restrictions. If you do not have a copy of the deed restrictions, you may request one by calling AMI at 713 932-1122 or by email at www.amitx.com

These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER

• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through October. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Outdoor temperatures remain high and warm weather means more mosquitoes. Although the number of people in Harris County contracting West Nile Virus is lower than in other parts of Texas, HCPHES has documented a rise of West Nile Virus in mosquitoes and birds. From July 4th to 8th, Cypress Falls Key Club members traveled to Orlando, Florida for the annual International Convention (ICON). At ICON, Key Club volunteers from around the world unite to participate in workshops, contests and charity events. Rising junior, Roshni Chandwani, won second place in an oratorical contest that questioned how the average Key Clubber could bring a global campaign, such as The Eliminate Project, to their school and local community.

Chandwani proposed for every Key Clubber to change the world by being a SUPERhero - Speaking, Uniting, Preparing, Executing and Revising. Her oratory taught Key Club members to follow the five steps in order to have a substantial impact on their communities. Additionally, she included information about the significance of The Eliminate Project, an organization determined to eradicate maternal/ neonatal tetanus (MNT) from the world by 2015. 160 babies die daily, but MNT has been eliminated in twenty countries since 2000. Chandwani’s speech speaks to the impact of MNT and how it is very possible to stop the disease. The accolade was announced at the end of the International Convention before Key Club members from around the world. Chandwani said, “I was honored to receive such a distinction because The Eliminate Project is something I’ve been working on for the past two years and I’ve been involved with a lot of fundraisers for the project.” Moreover, Chandwani was selected to serve as the Convention Liason during the upcoming school year. In her position, she will be in charge of coordinating the 2013 District Convention - choosing the theme, encouraging participation and planning the specifics of the weekend. On her Tex-O-Key blog, Chandwani wrote, “DCON is a way for us all to come together at the end of the year to celebrate our dedicated service with passion, excitement and enthusiasm. DCON is extremely important because of the diffusion of ideas and practices that takes place.” The Cypress Falls club sponsor, Kathie Kiklas, said, “Roshni has been an enthusiastic member of our Key Club and I couldn’t be prouder of everything she has accomplished.” We look forward to many great things ahead from Chandwani. Though the Cypress Falls Key Club has consistently won big at the district and international conventions, its members have kept their eye on the real prize - making an impact on their community. Throughout the summer, members have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, K2 Academy and more. The Cypress Falls Key Club is looking for even more events where they can lend a helping hand. If your organization is in need of devoted volunteers or if you’d like to make a donation to The Eliminate Project, be sure to contact the Cypress Falls Key Club President, Gabi Bradshaw, at gabi.bradshaw. kc@gmail.com.

CYPRESS FALLS KEY CLUB RECRUITS INCOMING FRESHMAN

With the advent of the 2012 school year right before our eyes, the Cypress Falls Key Club has been busily occupied with the most important mission of the year - recruiting members. For every club, their main source of new volunteers is the influx of freshmen that enter the school’s double doors each fall semester. Though many current members reach out to friends and family to join the organization, not all prospective Key Clubbers are lucky enough to be in contact with someone who is already involved in the program.

October 2012

9

Because of this, the Cypress Falls Key Club goes fishing for new members every year at Fish Camp. Many of the incoming freshman are anxious yet inquisitive about what’s to come during the next four years of their lives. As upperclassmen that have been there ourselves, it’s our job to make them feel welcome in our school. Further, as committed Key Club members, it’s even more important for us to treat others with the respect, integrity and care that are characteristic of the organization we’re a part of. At Fish Camp, Key Club members enthusiastically greet and befriend the incoming ninth graders to ease some of the worries they feel about entering a new phase in their lives. A nervous freshman-to-be last year, I remember hearing the energetic chanting of “Join Key Club!” and wondering why anyone would choose to join a club of key-makers. My curiosity got the best of me, nonetheless and I decided to take a closer look. The President of the organization was enthusiastically telling a small group of students about their numerous volunteer events. As I watched her speak, I determined that I wanted to find something I could be equally passionate about and signed my name to become a new member. Meeting an amicable person or discovering a new niche can make a big, scary school a much nicer placer to be. The recruitment of new members at Fish Camp helps incoming freshmen meet new friends, build their character and recognize a passion for volunteering while also having a lasting impact on the community. The more volunteers, the more of an impact. What’s greater is that in four years, these freshmen will be leading the Cypress Falls Key Club. In four years, they’ll be crossing the stage and leaving the halls of Cypress Falls to become adults. In four years, the concepts they learn as a volunteer will be something they can apply to the real world. Key Club members who learn to do “whatever it takes” to help those around them in high school will carry those skills throughout life and help people wherever they can - and that’s what Key Club is all about.

CYPRESS FALLS HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR

The ice cream social was enjoyed by all that attended. A HUGE thank you to Hilary Bracher and Suzie Lipps for their strong arms and smiles as they served every student their ice cream! The games afterwards were hilarious and energetic. “I never” and the statue game will forever be remembered, not to mention the fast and furious hula-hoop relay, even after a full school day! Texas Roadhouse gets our ‘shout out’ for hosting our carwash fundraiser September 8th. I believe the students and the cars received equal sudsing! It was a lot of good, clean, fun with a purpose. We appreciate everyone that came out to support us. A big thank you to the Brachers for lending their power washer and all the other parents as well for your time and energy. October 16th will be our Fall Concert. Our voices will be lifted in the autumn air in our school auditorium at 7 PM. Won’t you join us for an evening of listening pleasure? We would love to sing for you! October 23rd will be our Barbeque Dinner Theatre and silent auction. This will be an evening of delicious food and delightful sounds as we are entertained by not only our choir, but a few invited choirs in our district. If you own a business or have a product you would like to donate, we would love to add your donation to our auction. Please contact Mary Peck at 281-550-5893 for questions/donations. Tickets will be on sale through choir students and in the commons during lunch’s prior. There will be no tickets at the door. Welcome yourselves to a night full of choir style!

CYPRESS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL NOT AN AVERAGE CY-CHRISTIAN FOOTBALL PRACTICE

Early in each season, Warrior football players take a day of practice to do something a little different. They leave the pads in the lockers and load the bus to travel to another part of town. Over 50 football players, coaches and dads invade a neighborhood that could use more smiles and they host a football camp. This year, 30+ kids from Houston’s First Baptist Faith Center learned a little about football while having lots of fun. Scotty Sanders has worked at the Faith Center for years and was impressed with how the Cy-Christian players engaged and interacted with the kids. Coach Spenn’s goal for his coaches is for them to be transformational. He said, “To do this, we have to think outside the box. Some may see it as a loss of a practice, but the reality is that the impact on the team will have a far greater value than running a few extra plays in a practice.” Many of our players were greatly impacted and will remember days like this for a lifetime. It was evident that the kids from the neighborhood had a great time based on the smiles on their faces. The love of Christ was shared through the game of football and that is the definition of true success.

Brothers There is something special about being able to play football with your brother. The Warriors took the field for the home opener with five sets of brothers among the 46 team members. When the players are asked for words to describe our team, one word that often comes up is brotherhood. It is truly becoming that, both on and off the field, but for ten players in particular, it runs very deep. Cy-Christian to host K-12 Fall Preview On thursday, november 8th, from 7-8:30 PM, prospective families will be given the opportunity to visit Cypress Christian School to gather information and tour of the campus. The Admissions Department will begin accepting applications for 2013-2014 on this date. For more information, visit CypressChristian.org or call 281-469-7745.

STEEPLE PLACED ON NEW CHURCH UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN FAIRFIELD

On Aug. 30th, a 40-foot steeple was placed atop a new church under construction in Fairfield. The new meetinghouse is being built by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 21521 Fairfield Place Drive, next to Salyards Middle School. Scheduled for completion in January 2013, it will serve three local congregations of Latter-day Saints, commonly called Mormons.

Bishop Marc Calvert, who ministers to one of these congregations, said, “Members of the Church in Fairfield have met in a church building in Waller for about 20 years. As Fairfield has grown and developed, so also has the number of Church members in this area. There are now approximately 250 Latter-day Saints living in the Fairfield community and they are looking forward to worshiping much closer to home.” The new red and beige brick structure has a traditional architectural style accented with Texas stone. The facility will include a chapel (sanctuary) for Sunday worship services, classrooms for gospel study and a gymnasium with a hardwood basketball court. When completed, the building will also host youth activities on Wednesday evenings, including meetings for several Church-sponsored troops of the Boy Scouts of America. Submitted By Chris Fults

We have seen tremendous stories from some of the Veterans that have attended our previous reunions and want to unite as many Veterans as possible. This is a great time to come together with your military brothers and sisters who served and can relate to your experiences. It is also a time for us to recognize and say “Thank You” to all who served!!!! Registration starts on Friday, October 12, 2012 at 8:00 AM through Saturday afternoon. We will have washer games, horse shoes, cowboy golf and more. Friday we socialize, relax and share each other’s unique experiences.
