Message from your HOA President Greetings, It is hard to believe that it is October already. Soon we will start to see some Fall colors, cooler temperatures, and hopefully, fewer mosquitoes. October also brings about Halloween. Please be mindful of the children out trick-ortreating. Parents, remember that even with our community being fairly well lit with streetlights, it is always good to have flashlights with you when out trick-or-treating. It can be difficult for drivers to see children at night when crossing the street, especially in dark costumes. Hopefully, you have noticed some of the improvements that we have been making around the community. We are having the iron fences painted all around the community, as well as the entrance signs in each neighborhood. The landscaping has been looking great and the Skinner Road fence project should soon be finished after years of waiting. On a completely different topic, I would like to remind everyone that the community events held at the Community Center located in Cypress Mill Park are for all members of the Cypress Mill Homeowner’s Association. There seems to have been some confusion about this in the past, but I would like to make it clear that the Homeowner’s Association sponsors these events for our entire community. Finally, please note that the October meeting will be held 7 PM on Thursday, October 25th, instead of our regular Wednesday night meeting time. Please come out and see what our community is doing or participate in the homeowner’s forum. As always, you can also contact Michael Crahan with any issues, concerns or comments. Mike is doing a great job managing the day-to-day tasks of the community and he is in daily contact with the Board. Take care and God Bless, Dennis R Brewer President, Cypress Mill Homeowner’s Association.

Tree Pruning Tips
Many of our sidewalk trees are encroaching on our neighborhood roads and sidewalks. These trees are the responsibility of the individual homeowners and many trees need to be pruned, especially on the sidewalk side. Less mature southern live oaks need to be pruned to ensure proper canopy/ foliage growth so their branches can grow to be strong and spread the canopies to form bigger and wider range of shade. It saves energy costs and improves overall appearances of trees aesthetically pruned while trees are still young. Newly planted to 10 years old trees, if never pruned, are still considered less mature live oak trees as mature live oak trees need very little pruning if correctly pruned while young when they were less mature. Remove an occasional dead branch or twig (sucker branches) to ensure proper pruning. First remove any old posts or straps choking trees. A sign of this is if there are a lot of little twigs (sucker branches) below the straps that the builder or landscaper installed. If trees have been planted and rooting for more than 12 to 18 months, it may be a good time to remove suckers. You can make sure by shaking the tree trunk to see if the roots have taken root, then prune little twigs (sucker branches) from the trunk of the tree and any branches that are pointing down to the ground. Be sure not to over-prune, as you want branches to grow out and up. Landscapers call the twigs on trunks sucker branches because the take up all the nutrients and water from the top canopies.

Having a Halloween party?
Here’s a trick: serve fizzy frozen pops with a fruit-flavored snack treat inside. It’s eerily easy. Just make up your favorite punch or drink. Then halfway through freezing (about an hour), sneak in some fruit-flavored snacks. Abracadabra...delicious, kid-friendly Fruity Frozen Pops!
Helpful Holiday Hints for Travelers
Whether traveling across country or across town, it is important to keep safety in mind. Getting there could actually be half the fun! • Have a trip plan and let others know when you will leave and intend to arrive at your destination. • Try to load your suitcases in your car inside the garage with the garage door closed. • Have a cell phone with you if possible. • Keep your car doors locked and windows rolled up. • At stop signs or traffic signals, keep a safe distance from the car in front of you. Leave yourself room to get out in case you are boxed in. • Don’t stop in unpopulated areas to ask for directions. Travel well-lighted and busy streets.

• Do not pick up hitchhikers. Try not to stop if your car is blocked by someone standing in the road. Slow down and proceed slowly around the person. If they refuse to move, back up to safety and proceed to the nearest police station to report the incident. • Lock your door when you leave your car, even if it’s only for a short time. • Do not advertise that you are from out-of-town by pulling over to the curb to read a road map. • If you are involved in a minor accident, do not get out of the car. Lower your window slightly and ask the other party to phone the police or follow you to the nearest public area or police station. Some Criminals use an accident to get you to stop and get out of the car. If you are suspicious that the accident was staged, drive directly to the nearest law enforcement office to report the incident • When you leave your car, carry your purse and keep other valuables out of sight. Do not store valuables out in the open inside a parked car. • If you have a flat tire or other car problems, pull over to the side of the road out of the way of traffic. • Turn on your emergency flashers. If you have emergency roadway flares in your trunk, position them conspicuously. • Raise the hood and tie a handkerchief to the aerial or door handle. • Call for help from your car. • If a motorist stops to render assistance, it’s better to remain in the car, and ask him to get help (Likewise, if you see a stranded motorist, it’s better not to stop: notify the police). • If you think you are being followed, don’t drive home. You would only be telling your follower where you live. • Stay calm. As long as you think clearly, you’ll be in control of the situation. • Flash your lights and sound your horn long enough to attract attention to you and consequently the person following you. Drive to one of your already identified safe spots, sounding your horn and flashing your lights. Do not leave this safe location until you are sure follower is gone. • Remember, you are your best protection. If you follow these steps, you’ll be protecting the most important part of your car - YOU.

GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER
• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

If your street does not have a block captain, think about volunteering…. it’s a great way to get to know your neighbors and be one step ahead of the news. Contact Mike Crahan on M.Crahan@pmghouston.com, if you would like to volunteer.
Newsletter Deadline
The deadline for submitting articles/information to the Cypress Mill Messenger is the 6th of the preceding month. Please email articles to: cypressmillmessenger@yahoo.com. Information should be sent as an attachment in Word document format.
Street Light Out?
Have you noticed a street light out? You can report it to CenterPoint Energy 24 hours a day at 713-207-2222. Choose a language preference and then select option “4” for street light outages. Please provide the street light’s six digit number located approximately 5 feet up the pole. Also, it is helpful to give the street name and address.
Trash Collection
Please be aware that trash is not picked up on holidays; July 4th, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Christmas Day, etc … these workers deserve a holiday too. Trash will be picked up on the next scheduled collection day. Pickup and heavy trash days are both Mondays and Thursdays. If you are in doubt, please contact Best Trash, 281-313-2378, to confirm your next pickup day.
Do you want to know what’s happening in your neighborhood without waiting for the Messenger? If so, please let your block captain have your email address so that they can keep you informed of current news and events.
As always, please be courteous to your neighbors and do not put out your trash before 6 pm on the previous evening and please bring in your trash bin as soon as possible after pickup.
The block captains are all listed in the Cypress Mill Messenger with either their phone number and/or email address.
Let’s keep our neighborhood looking beautiful by storing your cans out of view from the street.

WEST NILE VIRUS
Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services (HCPHES) requested the district’s assistance in distributing prevention and protection information about West Nile Virus. Outdoor temperatures remain high and warm weather means more mosquitoes. Although the number of people in Harris County contracting West Nile Virus is lower than in other parts of Texas, HCPHES has documented a rise of West Nile Virus in mosquitoes and birds. For your convenience, information is posted on the district website. If you have questions or need additional information, please go to www.hcphes.org and view 2012 West Nile Virus Response.
