HALLOWEEN SAFTEY TIPS

Teens and Adolescents• Travel in groups. Go only to the houses of people you know. Younger children should be accompanied by a responsible older person. • Carry flashlights. • Carry a mobile phone for quick communication. • Stay focused on your surroundings. If harassed or threatened, go into the closest store/restaurant and ask to use the phone. Call parents and/or police. Let the proprietors know that your group feels unsafe. • Be very cautious around jack-o’-lanterns with lit candles. Keep an eye out for flames and/or candles on porches. • Consider alternatives to trick-or-treating. Alternatives include house or school parties or volunteering at a haunted-house project. Teen and Adult Drivers: • Clear the driver’s view. Be sure that neither the driver’s costume nor anything else in the car obstructs the driver’s view. • Wear a seat belt. Be sure your passengers are wearing a safety belt, even if they have to take off part of their costume to attach it. • Drive slowly and defensively. Don’t assume that a pedestrian, especially an excited youngster in a costume, will move as you expect. Keep an eye out for trick-or-treaters darting out from parked cars. Homeowners: • Replace burned-out bulbs in exterior lights. Leave your exterior lights on later than usual - perhaps even all night. • Clear the pathway. Make sure the path to your door is well lighted and your lawn is clear of things that could be tripped over, such as jack-o’lanterns with lit candles, ladders, garden hoses, flowerpots, bikes and animal leashes. • Sweep wet leaves from sidewalks and stairs. • Keep excitable pets away from the door. You’ll have a safer and calmer house if you keep Fido away from where you are dispensing the treats. • Put your car in the garage. Lock your garage doors.

My mom is my hero. My mom is PTA.

Join PTA. www.txpta.org FIGHT THE BITE! REDUCE YOUR RISK

BBQs, gardening, swimming pools, hikes... and mosquitoes. Enjoy the outdoors, but remember to protect yourself and your family from mosquitoborne diseases such as West Nile Virus. Your best defense against being bitten is simply to be prepared. Help Fight the Bite! • When outdoors, use an insect repellent containing the active ingredient DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535 to reduce exposure to mosquito bites. Always apply as directed on the label. Do not allow young children to apply repellent to themselves; have an adult do it for them. • If possible, wear long-sleeved clothing and long pants when outdoors at dawn and dusk, which are peak mosquito biting times. • Place mosquito netting over infant carriers when you are outdoors with infants. • Don’t feed the storm drains. Sweep up lawn clippings, leaves and tree limbs from sidewalks and driveways. • Remove/empty containers that can hold water such as flowerpots, buckets, tires, toys and plastic swimming pools. Birdbaths and pet water bowls should be changed at least twice a week. • Cover your boat or store in a covered place. Drain any standing water and make sure the bilge pump is working. Turn over canoes, kayaks and small boats to store upside down. • Keep rain gutters clean and draining and repair any outdoor household leaks. • When watering the lawn, be aware of any excess water that may accumulate. Fill in low areas around the yard. • When mosquitoes are noticed in your yard, spray with an outdoor mosquito spray. Be sure to use according to directions on the label. To control mosquitoes in your house, use a “flying insect spray.” Be sure to use according to directions on the label. • Household pets can be exposed to West Nile Virus (WNV). Contact your veterinarian for more information. Source: Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services

OCTOBER IS NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) program is dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of the early detection of breast cancer through a nationwide campaign. NBCAM started as a weeklong campaign in 1985 with 2 founding members. Today the American Cancer Society is one of many national public service organizations, professional associations and government agencies that form the NBCAM Board of Sponsors. During October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the member organizations of the Board of Sponsors join forces to spread the message that early detection of breast cancer followed by prompt treatment saves lives. The American Cancer Society recommends early detections. Women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. The third Friday in October each year is National Mammography Day, first proclaimed by President Clinton in 1993. On this day or throughout the month, women are encouraged to make a mammography appointment. To find a facility in your area, please call: American Cancer Society (800) 227-2345 National Cancer Institute (800) 4-CANCER Or visit nbcam.org or www.cancer.org for more information.

TAILGATING TIPS

Zip Lock Bags: Make sure that you get the freezer bag versions, you need something tough. These bags are incredibly versatile and do a great job when you want to keep food cold on the way to the tailgate. For example, flank steaks need longer marinating time. So, put them in a Zip Lock freezer bag with the dressing or whatever marinade you’re using, let them sit for two days in the fridge, then freeze them until the night before the game. Then take them out the day of they will thaw, but are still very cold for the trip. So, there’s less danger of the meat turning, like it could in a cooler that isn’t fully chilled.

The Old Foil Trick: This is one of the oldest in the book. Line your portable grill with aluminum foil for easy clean up and disposal of spent charcoal.

You can use any kind, but I recommend using heavy-duty foil, as it is a little more durable and stronger.

Free ! ates Estim

Freeze Your Water: I love this one because it can serve more than one purpose. If you get bottled water, freeze it. The day of the game, pop it in to the cooler. If it’s hot out, you can take it out as it melts and you’ll have plenty of cold water. These frozen gems can also keep things cool and the bottles make good ice packs.

Plus, you won’t “water down” your cooler like ice will. Prep for Burgers: Make your burgers in advance and make sure they are no thicker than 3/4 inch; thick burgers can take a long time to cook. If you like to eat, stack patties. Freeze your patties between sheets of wax paper. When you’ve got the grill going, put the patties on (still frozen) and cook 3 to 4 minutes on each side. Then, dress ‘em up accordingly. Discover the luxury of outdoor living... in your own back yard! Custom-made Palapas • Outdoor Kitchens Bamboo & Custom Furniture

The Jumbo Drink: It’s always a good idea to bring a “jumbo” cup so it’s less trips to fill it on up. Make sure that your cup sticks out like a sore thumb or has distinguishable markings so that you know it’s yours. You wouldn’t want to drink out of someone else’s cup now, would you? Laminated Checklist: This is one that people keep saying is the tip that saves them all kinds of headaches. We’ve been tailgating for years and our checklist was laminated early on, because we knew that this would be the easy way to keep track of our list. As you pack for the game, simply check items on with a dry erase marker. When you’re done, wipe it off and you’ll be ready for the next game. Large Storage Bins: Oh, where would we be without the large storage bins? These magnificent totes keep your tailgating gear and equipment organized. It’s easy in and easy out all season long. If you need these bins, your local home improvement store has plenty of them. Warm Weather Ice Melt: If you happen to have your tailgate on a hot day, make sure that your beverages are very cold before you put them in the ice in your cooler.
The fact is, if you have really cold drinks, the ice in the cooler doesn’t have to work as hard and it helps slow the ice melt. And on a hot day, it’s always good to be able to reach in to the cooler for a little ice. By Joe Cahn of www.tailgating.com

FUN SCHOOL LUNCH IDEAS

Fill your child’s lunchbox with healthy and fun lunches they’ll actually eat! Cookie Cutter Sandwiches: Any sandwich cut with a large cookie cutter: star, heart, dinosaur, animals, etc. will become an irresistible treat! Pin Wheel Sandwiches: Spread your child’s favorite sandwich filling onto a tortilla, roll it up and slice it into smaller pieces. Our favorite fillings are - peanut butter and jelly, lunchmeat with cream cheese or cheese spread. Cheesy Stars: Use a small star cookie cutter to cut cheddar cheese pieces. In a separate bag, provide crackers or apple slices. You can also use the cookie cutter to cut bologna,
ham or turkey. Bugs on Log: An old favorite with kids. Fill celery with cream cheese or peanut butter and top with raisins. An equally delicious alternative to peanut butter is cream cheese or Laughing Cow Cheese.

2012 Project Pink Tickets $65 each $600 table of 10 $750 VIP table of 10 Tickets on sale now!

Smiley Face Fun: Spread peanut butter or cream cheese on a rice cake. Make a face using raisins or any dried fruit and a full head of hair with coconut flakes. This is a bit hard to pack for a lunch but a zip close plastic bag usually works pretty well. Cookie Dippers: Send vanilla wafer cookies along with a favorite yogurt. Kids love to dip and this way they are getting less sugar than most packaged treats. Fun Chips: Use large cookie cutters to cut a flour tortilla or wrap. Arrange on cookie sheet and toast in a 400 degree oven for 6 - 8 minutes. Send to school plain or with bean dip for dipping. Try brushing a very small amount of olive oil or cooking spray. Then sprinkle Parmesan cheese or cinnamon sugar. If you try the cinnamon sugar, send the chips along with a container of applesauce for dipping. Kid’s love to dip? Pack string cheese and rolled meat slices with honey mustard dressing for dipping. I made it myself! I find that my children are more apt to eat a brown bag lunch they’ve helped to make. Whether it’s the cookies they baked with me or the sandwich they made in the morning. Packaging The retail world knows... enticing packaging sells. Especially when it comes to kids. Unfortunately, what’s inside is not always nutritious. Solve this dilemma by generating your own fun packaging. Before the school year begins, stock up on cheerfully colored re-usable containers, fun party napkins and stickers for plastic bags. A healthy lunch will be fun to eat!

GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER

• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

WEST NILE VIRUS

Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services (HCPHES) requested the district’s assistance in distributing prevention and protection information about West Nile Virus. Outdoor temperatures remain high and warm weather means more mosquitoes. Although the number of people in Harris County contracting West Nile Virus is lower than in other parts of Texas, HCPHES has documented a rise of West Nile Virus in mosquitoes and birds. For your convenience, information is posted on the district website. If you have questions or need additional information, please go to www.hcphes.org and view 2012 West Nile Virus Response.

Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.
