Street Parking Near the Schools

With the Katy ISD bus changes this year, many parents are dropping off and picking up their children at school. This means there are many more cars parked along the streets near the schools. Please be extra cautious in these areas and be alert to the parked cars and the children walking to and from the cars. Thank you.

November 2012

HUMMINGBIRDS

Now through November, millions of hummingbirds will be coming to Texas. Some will just be passing through to areas south of the border and others will stay here for the winter. Some hummingbirds will even breed here in the Houston area. They need to fatten up for the winter so leave your hummingbird feeders out and keep them filled with sugar water. If you do not have a feeder they can be purchased for a reasonable price at a local home and garden store. You can make your own sugar water to fill the feeders or purchase a pre made mix at the store. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see hummingbirds in your yard?

Crime Alert

There have been several break-ins in Cinco Ranch along the golf course where it is quiet and dark at night. The robbers act quickly grabbing small items like cash and jewelry. Please be alert to any suspicious activity.

Parking in the Street

When a number of vehicles park in the street, emergency vehicles have a difficult task maneuvering down the street. Due to the size and clearance needs of these emergency vehicles, a street lined with parked cars obstructs the passage and delays response time. While it is understood that during certain events, vehicles parking on the street is an unavoidable circumstance, please be aware of clearance needed for traffic. Ask your guests to park their car as close to curb as possible and not line both sides of the street. Be a courteous neighbor by communicating you are having a gathering at your home and may need additional parking. Ask if they would mind guests parking in front of their homes to help eliminate the congestion on the street. To assist the Emergency Services in their endeavors and help eliminate road congestion, we ask that Residents refrain from parking in the street. Your assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Help Keep Our Lights On

Cinco Ranch Residents pay a maintenance fee where a large portion includes the electricity to light our streets. Each streetlight costs the Cinco Ranch Associations approximately $30 dollars a month. This fee is billed to us whether the light is working or not.

Ft. Bend County - LEASH LAW

Laws written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash make freeing a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals easier. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies-infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans. Do you have a transformer in your yard? If you do, please do not directly surround it with mulch or dirt. Transformers must have the sides exposed so they can cool properly. Otherwise they will over heat and burn out. Also, the sides of a transformer can rust through due to mulch holding moisture against them. Please do your part and clear the area around transformers in your yard.

Who Do I Call?

• Street Light Outages - Report to CenterPoint Energy via their website, thereby eliminating a lot of “hold time” on the phone. The website address is: www.centerpointenergy.com/outage. Give them as much information as possible, including the address and/or pole number. If you prefer to call, the number is 713-207-2222. • Street sign or stop sign down or missing - Please contact the county. Bend County, call Road & Bridge at 800690-ROAD (800-690-7623) and if you are in Harris County, you can call 281463-8703 for Service Requests & Road Maintenance. If you see any curbs needing repair around the islands in the Cul de Sac or along the boulevards, please call and report these, too. On a related note, the driveway “apron” is the responsibility of the individual property owner, no matter who maintains your street. Also, the sidewalks adjoining residential lots are the responsibility of the owner. The association maintains sidewalks in common areas only. • Leaking fire hydrants or storm drain problems - Please contact your Water District. Cinco ST Environmental phone number is 281-398-8211. DO NOT FEED THE DUCKS!

Recently, signs have been added to the area surrounding the lake at Lake Pointe advising residents not to feed the ducks at the park and lake. The duck population at Lake Pointe is a concern and feeding the ducks is encouraging the ducks to loiter. The ducks are a part of nature and the lake is a natural area, but feeding the ducks in this manner causes a duck population growth and subsequently the mess that goes along with it. Please keep this in mind the next time you are enjoying the park and lake. Thank you for your consideration and attention. - Management

Sheriff’s Vacation Home Watch

Vacation Can Be Great! Make sure you return home and feel great.

If you are going on vacation, a business trip or just going away for the weekend, please put your house on a vacation watch list. It only takes a few minutes to inform local police that you are away from home. Take measures to secure your home and cars. Let your neighbors know that you will be away and when you plan to return. Inform neighbors and law enforcement if you plan on having maintenance services stop by while you are on vacation. It is advised that you have newspapers stopped, mail held and any advertisement left on your property picked up by someone. Keeping lawn mowed for a normal appearance to the property will look as if there is active occupancy. Taking preventative steps may deter vandals or thieves from entering your home. Log into the site or call the office to give appropriate information. Make sure to cancel the watch when you return home.

Do You Have This Phone Number in Your Cell Phone?

Two phone numbers suggested you save in your cell phone are the nonemergency Harris County Precinct 5 Constables and Fort Bend County Sheriff’s numbers. 911 should always be used in case of an emergency, but many times we need to contact the Sheriff’s department and need to do so quickly. Don’t hesitate to call the Sheriff’s department if something in your neighborhood seems questionable. This will give our contract deputies probable cause to investigate. This would include suspicious vehicles (vehicles exhibiting unsafe or erratic driving behavior), suspicious persons or behavior, activity at you neighbors home when you know they are on vacation and anything else that may be out of the ordinary in your neighborhood. Don’t take a chance on you or your family’s safety.

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

POPE JOHN CC INVITATIONAL

Pope John’s cross-country team hosted our first-ever meet, the Lion Pride Invitational. 716 runners from 44 schools competed in eight different categories - from high school varsity 5k to an elementary school 1 mile run. The meet, which was organized by Coach Hilda Gonzales and a group of cross-country team parents, was held on the Pope John campus and garnered much praise from both competitors and coaches. Our Lion runners did the school proud too, with the Girls Varsity team of Kara Christopherson, Maria Gonzales, Brandie Guice, Bethany Villafranca, Bethany Vuyk and Emily Yoder taking home the 3rd place trophy. Two Varsity boys won individual medals: Cameron Guice placed 6th, running the 5K course in 18 minutes 15 seconds and Dylan Brokmeyer was 19th with a time of 19:10. Four Varsity girls won individual medals: Maria Gonzales placed 2nd, running the 5K in 19:38. Emily Yoder was 5th with a 20:51. Brandie Guice, competing in her first Varsity race, was 15th, with a time of 22:25 and Bethany Vuyk placed 16th, with a 22:30. The boys Varsity team of Dylan Brokmeyer, J.P. Gonzales, Cameron Guice, Noah Hearn and Austin Morrison was 5th. Michael Alexander, Josh Chavez, Chris Davidson, Osa Imoisi, Alan Lasater, Sean Reilly, Nathan Schmitt and Kyle Smith ran JV and our JV girls team was Kiersten Hofbauer, Hailey Justus and Jackie Lee. Running a meet the size of the Lion Pride Invitational took numerous volunteers. The school community stepped up to the plate, with many students, parents, faculty and staff willing to show up at 6:00 AM on a Saturday to help with the meet.

KATY ISD GRADUATES SHOW HIGHER ACT SCORES COMPARED TO STUDENTS STATEWIDE

ACT reports that Katy ISD graduates for 2012 are more ready for collegelevel coursework when compared to students across the state. In 2012, more than 1,500 Katy ISD students participated in ACT testing and, as a district, had a higher average score in all four categories than the state average. The Katy ISD average composite score for 2012 was 23.5, while the average composite score for the state was 20.8. The ACT consists of curriculum-based tests of educational development in English, mathematics, reading and science designed to measure the skills needed for success in first year college coursework. ACT research shows that it is the rigor of the coursework that has the greatest impact on ACT performance and college readiness. During the Lone Star Leadership Academy camps, selected students joined delegations of other distinguished students from across the state to develop leadership skills while learning about the great state of Texas. They also completed problem solving and decision-making simulations, exercised creativity and practiced presentation skills in leadership groups. Participants experienced what they are learning in school through visits to historically, politically, scientifically, and environmentally significant sites. Katy ISD students who participated in the 2012 Leadership Academy are: Beck Junior High: Carter Burton, Keely Meloche Beckendorff Junior High: Matthew Hammond, Robert LeFlore

When the launch team for New Creation Lutheran Church gathered to plan a first public event, they wanted it to be family oriented and fun to reflect their worshipping community. This goal was achieved at their first annual Blessings Event held the last Sunday in August. Entire families, including pets, came to the Cornelius’ home on James Lane in Fulshear to receive blessings for the new school year! Teachers representing three districts were blessed. Families with roots in Ecuador and Colombia were included, possibly drawn by the launch team’s previous experience supporting education for street children in Peru. Dogs of many breeds romped together, including one retriever who repeatedly jumped into the swimming pool. Thanks to a grant from Fort Bend Thrivent Financial, there were hot dogs to eat and games to play. A large inflatable proved to be the most popular activity. At the end of the day, children left for home with a gift bag, a Bible verse and a smile. All were invited back at a later date for New Creation’s first worship service with Pastor Dale Olson.

The Houston Family Arts Center received the Gem of a Theater Award for consistently providing superior theater in its own handsome theater, tucked away in a strip mall in northwest Houston. HFAC rents the nearby 456-seat Berry Center Theater twice a year for large musical productions. This year it outdid itself by commissioning and then producing Death by Design, a comedic mystery drama, from noted playwright Rob Urbinati and the result was a most entertaining success. HFAC also produced the world premiere of the musical Kissless and raised $144,000 to enter it in the prestigious New York Musical Theater Festival (NYMF) and run it off-B’way for several weeks.

Kimberly Akimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, November 29-December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

Volunteers Needed IN KATY We Believe In The Power Of Second Chances

CROSSROADS mentors are regular people, just like you, who prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering positive mentoring relationships. The goal is crime prevention! Our mentors must be 21 years of age and volunteer a minimum of 1 hour a week. There are many sites, areas and available times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned child. Please consider devoting just one hour a week to the future of a needy child, many times you are their only visitors. Contact Jan Sadler Gibbs at jan.gibbs@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779.

STANDUP FOR KIDS

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids, please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help, visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

Their location is 6260 Westpark (in the West Loop/SW Freeway area). The times/days/number of students are all flexible. For more information, contact Stephanie Schmadeke, 713-628-9973 or to learn more about Aphasia, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphasia.

RUOK Program

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily unsubscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls.

38

This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.

Local chapters offer scheduled activities, most of which take place during the day when at-home moms most need support. Our calendar includes activities such as weekly (ageappropriate) playgroups, park days, group outings, book club, mom and tot lunch, family events, community service projects, mom’s night out and more! Of course, children are encouraged to come along and moms may attend as many or as few activities as are appropriate for their family. Katy Parents of Gifted and Talented Support KPGT

Did you know there is a support group for the Gifted and Talented Program in KISD? The Katy Parents of Gifted and Talented is an advocacy organization dedicated to promoting quality educational services for the gifted students in the school district. The mission of the organization is to promote community awareness of the unique social, emotional and intellectual needs of gifted and talented students and to support the development of appropriate educational services to meet these needs. Funded by membership dues, KPGT publishes a quarterly newsletter, “Connections” and is now on the web! KPGT advocates for the needs of our GT students by serving on district committees, panels at state GT conferences, the Parent Advisory Board and keeping abreast of legislative issues. KPGT works cooperatively with KISD to co-host events such as the very popular “Super Saturday” and the “Student Summer Scholarship Seminar.” Our non-profit organization offers summer scholarships and grants for innovative programs to the GT teachers in KISD. Won’t you show your support of our efforts and join KPGT today? Visit our website at www.kpgt.org for a printable membership form.

Katy’s Own School Lunch Revolution

Have you ever wished school lunches weren’t so full of junk food? Have you ever seen Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution? There is a group for you right here in Katy! We are fortunate that Katy ISD cares about our kids and has a large budget base to work with. Let’s encourage them to include healthier food choices on school menus. Join us from the beginning as we start to gather members and momentum to spread the word that it IS possible to reduce processed foods, remove flavored milk and increase fresh fruits and veggies. If you believe it is possible to feed school aged children something other than processed chicken nuggets, stuffed crust pizza and chocolate milk then please bring your energy, your ideas and your connections and join us! Our kids deserve the best, after all, that’s why we chose to put them in Katy ISD! For more information: merag94@gmail.com or find us on Facebook: Katy’s Own School Lunch Revolution.
