SURVIVING BLACK FRIDAY

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, can be thrilling and stressful all at the same time. With stores offering drastically marked-down prices on in-demand items on Black Friday, Thanksgiving Day sales bring big crowds and long lines are to be expected. To successfully make it through the mall without being pummeled by other moms looking for a good deal, we have some tips and tricks to make your holiday shopping spree a little easier:

Weeks Before Black Friday: • Make a list of the must-have products that you are shopping for this holiday season, including the names of the people for whom you are shopping. This will make your day more organized and will reduce the number of unnecessary purchases that you make. • Sign up for store email updates so that you will be among the first to know what will be on sale. • Print out any online coupons you may have. • Sign up for free store club cards that offer discounts or coupons. Stores like Barnes & Noble offer such programs. • Consider outlet shopping. The Day Before Black Friday: • Eat a lot of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pie. This will not help your shopping, per se, but will make you feel happy and satisfied. • Get a good’s night sleep the night before. Thanks to all that food in your belly it shouldn’t be too hard to fall asleep. The Day Of Thanksgiving Day Sales: • Know exactly the time that the stores you want to hit are open and go to the store that has the best deals and/or the gift you want to get the most first. Be there at least a half-hour before it opens if the gift is popular. • Leave the kids at home; this is not a day to worry about handholding and good behavior. • Be caffeinated and full - don’t shop on low energy and an empty stomach. • Pack snacks so that you don’t have to stop your marathon-shopping day to grab some grub from the food court. • Bring along a MP3 player or portable CD player to help pass the time when you are waiting to pay for your finds. • Don’t worry about purchasing little gifts today, such as stocking stuffers, but rather focus on gifts that are bigger, harder to find and more expensive. • Consider this a good day to look for that new winter coat or little black dress you need. Clothing sales are usually very good on Black Friday, because so many people are already in the stores looking for toys and gifts. • If a product is not available, but the store offers a rain check, take it. and as with most birds, is bigger and has brighter and more colorful plumage. The female is called a Hen and is generally smaller and drab in color. The Tom turkey has a long wattle (a fleshy, wrinkled, brightly colored fold of skin hanging from the neck or throat) at the base of its bill and additional wattles on the neck, as well as a prominent tuft of bristles resembling a beard projecting downward from its chest. The turkey was originally domesticated in Mexico and was brought into Europe early in the 16th century. Since that time, turkeys have been extensively raised because of the excellent quality of their meat and eggs. Some of the common breeds of turkey in the United States are the Bronze, Narragansett, White Holland and Bourbon Red. Though there is no real evidence that turkey was served at the Pilgrim’s first Thanksgiving, in a book written by the Pilgrim’s Governor Bradford, he does make mention of wild turkeys. In a letter sent to England, another Pilgrim describes how the governor sent “four men out fowling” returning with turkeys, ducks and geese.

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

Running a meet the size of the Lion Pride Invitational took numerous volunteers. The school community stepped up to the plate, with many students, parents, faculty and staff willing to show up at 6:00 AM on a Saturday to help with the meet.

POPE JOHN CC INVITATIONAL

Pope John’s cross-country team hosted our first-ever meet, the Lion Pride Invitational. 716 runners from 44 schools competed in eight different categories - from high school varsity 5k to an elementary school 1 mile run. The meet, which was organized by Coach Hilda Gonzales and a group of cross-country team parents, was held on the Pope John campus and garnered much praise from both competitors and coaches. Our Lion runners did the school proud too, with the Girls Varsity team of Kara Christopherson, Maria Gonzales, Brandie Guice, Bethany Villafranca, Bethany Vuyk and Emily Yoder taking home the 3rd place trophy. Two Varsity boys won individual medals: Cameron Guice placed 6th, running the 5K course in 18 minutes 15 seconds and Dylan Brokmeyer was 19th with a time of 19:10. Four Varsity girls won individual medals: Maria Gonzales placed 2nd, running the 5K in 19:38. Emily Yoder was 5th with a 20:51. Brandie Guice, competing in her first Varsity race, was 15th, with a time of 22:25 and Bethany Vuyk placed 16th, with a 22:30. The boys Varsity team of Dylan Brokmeyer, J.P. Gonzales, Cameron Guice, Noah Hearn and Austin Morrison was 5th. Michael Alexander, Josh Chavez, Chris Davidson, Osa Imoisi, Alan Lasater, Sean Reilly, Nathan Schmitt and Kyle Smith ran JV and our JV girls team was Kiersten Hofbauer, Hailey Justus and Jackie Lee.

KATY ISD GRADUATES SHOW HIGHER ACT SCORES COMPARED TO STUDENTS STATEWIDE

ACT reports that Katy ISD graduates for 2012 are more ready for collegelevel coursework when compared to students across the state. In 2012, more than 1,500 Katy ISD students participated in ACT testing and, as a district, had a higher average score in all four categories than the state average. The Katy ISD average composite score for 2012 was 23.5, while the average composite score for the state was 20.8. The ACT consists of curriculum-based tests of educational development in English, mathematics, reading and science designed to measure the skills needed for success in first year college coursework. ACT research shows that it is the rigor of the coursework that has the greatest impact on ACT performance and college readiness. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation released the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 58th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. A total of 41 of these talented seniors are from Katy ISD. As Semifinalists, these students now have a chance to compete for some 8,300 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $32 million, that will be offered in spring 2013. OUTSTANDING KATY ISD STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN 2012 LONE STAR LEADERSHIP ACADEMY CAMPS

This past school year, nine outstanding Katy ISD students were selected to participate in Education in Action’s 2012 spring break and summer camps. Lone Star Leadership Academy camps took place in Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin/San Antonio and Houston/Galveston depending on the students’ grade level. Selection for the Lone Star Leadership Academy was based on each student’s demonstrated academic success and leadership ability, an educator recommendation and involvement in school and community activities. During the Lone Star Leadership Academy camps, selected students joined delegations of other distinguished students from across the state to develop leadership skills while learning about the great state of Texas. They also

completed problem solving and decision-making simulations, exercised creativity and practiced presentation skills in leadership groups. Participants experienced what they are learning in school through visits to historically, politically, scientifically, and environmentally significant sites.

“After educating students, a school district’s primary duty is to be good stewards of the taxpayer’s hard-earned dollars,” Ludwig said after the meeting. “Everyone in the business office is proud of our perfect record.” Lamar CISD has received the highest possible score every year since the program began. Lamar CISD also received a perfect score, meeting all 70 indicators in the program. The rating is based on student, staff, budgetary and actual financial data reported to the TEA. Bear Creek Baptist Church is offering Upward Basketball and Cheerleading for K-8th Grade. Cost is $75 for Basketball and $80 for Cheerleading. They will have one hour of practices a week and on Saturdays they will have a game for one hour. Every practice and game takes place on our Campus. Church News Big Back to School and Pet Blessing enjoyed by Fulshear families!

When the launch team for New Creation Lutheran Church gathered to plan a first public event, they wanted it to be family oriented and fun to reflect their worshipping community. This goal was achieved at their first annual Blessings Event held the last Sunday in August. Entire families, including pets, came to the Cornelius’ home on James Lane in Fulshear to receive blessings for the new school year!

Teachers representing three districts were blessed. Families with roots in Ecuador and Colombia were included, possibly drawn by the launch team’s previous experience supporting education for street children in Peru. Dogs of many breeds romped together, including one retriever who repeatedly jumped into the swimming pool. Thanks to a grant from Fort Bend Thrivent Financial, there were hot dogs to eat and games to play. A large inflatable proved to be the most popular activity. At the end of the day, children left for home with a gift bag, a Bible verse and a smile. All were invited back at a later date for New Creation’s first worship service with Pastor Dale Olson.

Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.
