Victory Over Japan Day VJ Day On September 2, 1945, the Empire of Japan formally signed the documents of surrender in Tokyo Bay, aboard the Battleship USS Missouri. This formally ended World War II. On September 2, 2012, 67 years after the formal surrender, Katy’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9182 in their Veteran’s Memorial Museum, remembered this event. In a special exhibit open to the public on both September 1st and 2nd, a diorama of the war in the pacific was presented. Additionally, a photo of the B-29 Enola Gay made on the morning of August 5th was on display. The historic significance of this was this picture showed the B-29 Bomber on the afternoon that it received its now im

The highlight of the remembrance weekend was the presentation by VFW member Gary Drahos of an exact replica model of the USS Missouri. The detail on the model is exquisite. The VFW feels very fortunate to have this piece for display in their museum. The model of the USS Missouri plus many other artifacts of not only the 2nd World War, but all of America’s wars are on display at the Veteran’s Memorial Museum. The museum, located at 6206 George Bush Drive in Katy, is open daily 9 AM to 4 PM as well as on the first full weekend of each month or by reservation. CAP PILOT MAKES ANOTHER LANDING WITHOUT ENGINE Okay, so it was a glider! We all recall the incredible skill and composure displayed when 1st Lt Sarah Rovner successfully landed her CAP Cessna at night on a city street in Conroe, Texas, when she experienced engine failure. This was a truly remarkable feat under the circumstances. Perhaps this event sparked her curiosity about flying an aircraft without an engine.

As a result, Sarah has tried her wings at soaring. On September 14th, she and instructor Lt. Col. Eston Hupp made a couple of flights in a Blanic L-23 at the Soaring Club of Houston airfield in Waller County, Texas. The soaring club is a CAP affiliate support group and the home for the CAP 2-33 glider. The club hosts the annual Cadet Glider Encampment. Cadets are given glider orientation flights. Sarah was heard to say that she was surprised at how easy the glider was to fly and how peaceful and serene the sensation was, floating effortlessly in the sky. Col. Hupp told her she could make the transition to soaring with very little effort on her part. We hope all her future landings without an engine are in gliders. By: Lt Col. Eston Hupp

Local Charity Gives Away Its 300 th Computer Keep Kids Connected, a Katy non-profit organization that gives computers to kids with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses, gave away its 300th computer on September 11, 2012 to 6 year old Nicholas Hernandez of Katy, TX. Nicholas is being treated for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) at MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital in Houston. Nicholas received the computer from Caitlyn Mortus, a junior at Seven Lakes High School, who is a cancer survivor herself. She started the organization after she was declared cancer free in August 2010 from her desire to help kids who were still in the hospital battling a serious illness. GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

RECIPES BROCCOLI GRATIN WITH MUSTARD-CHEESE STREUSEL

Ingredients: 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter 1/3 cup minced onion 2 large garlic cloves, minced 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard 4 tablespoons Dijon mustard 2 1/2 cups fresh breadcrumbs made from crustless sourdough bread 1 cup (packed) grated Parmesan cheese (about 3 ounces) 12 to 13 cups broccoli florets (from about 3 pounds broccoli crowns) 1/2 cup whipping cream   DIRECTIONS:  Melt butter in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic; sauté until onion is soft, about 4 minutes. Mix in dry mustard, then 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard, blending well. Add breadcrumbs; sauté until crumbs are crisp and golden, stirring and pressing with back of fork to separate, about 8 minutes. Season with salt and pepper; cool completely. Mix in 3/4 cup cheese. Cook broccoli florets in large pot of boiling generously salted water until crisp-tender, about 3 minutes. Drain. Transfer to paper towels; cool. (Streusel and broccoli can be made 1 day ahead. Cover separately and refrigerate.) Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter 13x9x2-inch glass baking dish. Place broccoli in large bowl. Add whipping cream, remaining 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard and 1/4 cup cheese; toss to coat evenly. Arrange broccoli in prepared dish. Sprinkle streusel over. Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie Ingredients: 1 (9 inch) prepared chocolate cookie crumb crust 4 eggs 1 cup butter, softened 8 (1 ounce) squares semisweet chocolate 2 cups confectioners’ sugar 1 cup smooth peanut butter 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream DIRECTIONS: Melt 6 ounces semi sweet chocolate and cool to room temperature. Beat the eggs with 3/4 cup butter or margarine, chocolate and confectioners’ sugar for a FULL 5 minutes. Mixture will be thick and smooth. In a separate bowl, beat the peanut butter, 1/4 cup butter, and cream. Spoon chocolate filling into crust. Swirl peanut butter filling into chocolate filling. Drizzle remaining 2 oz of melted chocolate on top of pie. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour and serve.

KATY ISD GRADUATES SHOW HIGHER ACT SCORES COMPARED TO STUDENTS STATEWIDE ACT reports that Katy ISD graduates for 2012 are more ready for college-level coursework when compared to students across the state. In 2012, more than 1,500 Katy ISD students participated in ACT testing and, as a district, had a higher average score in all four categories than the state average. KATY ISD SENIORS NAMED SEMIFINALISTS  IN 2013 NATIONAL MERIT® SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The National Merit Scholarship Corporation released the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 58th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. A total of 41 of these talented seniors are from Katy ISD. Lone Star Leadership Academy camps took place in Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin/San Antonio and Houston/Galveston depending on the students’ grade level. Selection for the Lone Star Leadership Academy was based on each student’s demonstrated academic success and leadership ability, an educator recommendation and involvement in school and community activities. During the Lone Star Leadership Academy camps, selected students joined delegations of other distinguished students from across the state to develop leadership skills while learning about the great state of Texas. They also completed problem solving and decision-making simulations, exercised creativity and practiced presentation skills in leadership groups. PRIVATE SCHOOLS POPE JOHN CC INVITATIONAL Pope John’s cross-country team hosted our first-ever meet, the Lion Pride Invitational. 716 runners from 44 schools competed in eight different categories - from high school varsity 5k to an elementary school 1 mile run. The meet, which was organized by Coach Hilda Gonzales and a group of cross-country team parents, was held on the Pope John campus and garnered much praise from both competitors and coaches. Our Lion runners did the school proud too, with the Girls Varsity team of Kara Christopherson, Maria Gonzales, Brandie Guice, Bethany Villafranca, Bethany Vuyk and Emily Yoder taking home the 3rd place trophy. Two Varsity boys won individual medals: Cameron Guice placed 6th, running the 5K course in 18 minutes 15 seconds and Dylan Brokmeyer was 19th with a time of 19:10.

Four Varsity girls won individual medals: Maria Gonzales placed 2nd, running the 5K in 19:38. Emily Yoder was 5th with a 20:51. Brandie Guice, competing in her first Varsity race, was 15th, with a time of 22:25 and Bethany Vuyk placed 16th, with a 22:30. The boys Varsity team of Dylan Brokmeyer, J.P. Gonzales, Cameron Guice, Noah Hearn and Austin Morrison was 5th. Michael Alexander, Josh Chavez, Chris Davidson, Osa Imoisi, Alan Lasater, Sean Reilly, Nathan Schmitt and Kyle Smith ran JV and our JV girls team was Kiersten Hofbauer, Hailey Justus and Jackie Lee. Running a meet the size of the Lion Pride Invitational took numerous volunteers. The school community stepped up to the plate, with many students, parents, faculty and staff willing to show up at 6:00 AM on a Saturday to help with the meet.

KISD GOLF RIVALS MEET AGAIN Eric Redeker, 2011 Taylor High School graduate and Cody Hebert, 2012 Katy High School graduate, squared off in the John Bohmann Memorial Invitational Golf Tournament held recently in Seguin, Texas. Eric is currently a sophomore at Trinity University and Cody is a freshman at Southwestern University. Trinity took first place in the tournament, with Southwestern finishing a close second.

Big Back to School and Pet Blessing enjoyed by Fulshear families! When the launch team for New Creation Lutheran Church gathered to plan a first public event, they wanted it to be family oriented and fun to reflect their worshipping community. This goal was achieved at their first annual Blessings Event held the last Sunday in August. Entire families, including pets, came to the Cornelius’ home on James Lane in Fulshear to receive blessings for the new school year! Teachers representing three districts were blessed. Families with roots in Ecuador and Colombia were included, possibly drawn by the launch team’s previous experience supporting education for street children in Peru. Dogs of many breeds romped together, including one retriever who repeatedly jumped into the swimming pool. Thanks to a grant from Fort Bend Thrivent Financial, there were hot dogs to eat and games to play. A large inflatable proved to be the most popular activity. At the end of the day, children left for home with a gift bag, a Bible verse and a smile. All were invited back at a later date for New Creation’s first worship service with Pastor Dale Olson.

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.
