More inside your November newsletter.

NEW! MOMS IN PRAYER INTERNATIONAL MIPI is off to a great start this year! We offer moms an opportunity to come together with other moms for one hour of concentrated prayer each week. We pray for our kids, schools, teachers and staff. Alexander Elem., Griffin Elem., Holland Elem. and Beckendorff JH are all meeting at Redeemer Baptist with multi-school groups on Monday mornings at 9:00 AM. Contact Kathy Hollister at hfamily6@ consolidated.net for more information. The contact for Seven Lakes HS is Connie Creager at rccreager@netzero.net for more information. The Seven Lakes HS and the new SLJH group will be meeting in the prayer room at the Fellowship of Cinco Ranch on Mondays

Grand Lakes News It’s the holidays and a magnificent time for loving, sharing and giving. Why do we wait until the holidays to enjoy this spirit of giving? This is a wonderful selfless habit we can do everyday of our lives. How? Begin by asking someone “How are you” and be prepared to listen to how they are feeling. Majority of us ask someone how they are doing just out of formality and we really don’t care to know what’s going on with them. Someone will forever thank you for listening. Another way to give each day is by offering a loved one a cold glass of water when they come home from work, school or any other place. Cold water instantly calms the mind and you never know if they had a difficult commute home and simply need to distress. You can also send a friend a “Just wanted to let you know that I’m thinking of you” text message or email. It’s that simple. Now what about bigger things? Surprise them with a special meal. Be spontaneous by taking their hand, grabbing a jacket and taking your coffee cups to enjoy morning caffeine at the park, surrounded only by the morning dew and each other’s company. If you look at the pattern here, all of these selfless acts only require your love. Blessings to all for a great Thanksgiving. Email me: monica_vagholkar@yahoo.com

Tips for a Thinner Thanksgiving Apple pie. Mashed potatoes. Butter rolls. Green bean casserole. Stuffed turkey. FORGET THE SALAD. How on earth can you stay slim and trim this Thanksgiving when you’re surrounded by this horn of plenty? We have tips! • Get moving! Try to incorporate some kind of exercise, even if it’s going for a brisk walk. • Eat breakfast! Be sure to eat a healthy, fiber and vitamin packed breakfast to curb those cravings. • Skip the usuals! Skip the mashed potatoes and reach for roasted potatoes. Skip the pie and reach for fruit!

Now Katy has the same award winning BBQ and Burgers that you’ve heard about for 60 years. Otto’s has won countless Reader’s Choice awards for best BBQ, best Burgers, and more! • Filleted in House Steaks and Seafood • Famous Brisket and Links Otto’s • Famous Burgers • Gourmet Salads & More Caters!

• Veggies first! Eat your vegetables first and you’ll feel fuller longer. • Portion control! Don’t even THINK about going back for seconds. • Slow down! Take your time and truly savor every bite. You may not be as hungry as your taste buds say. • Go lighter! Use some lighter options when cooking: skim milk vs. cream, yogurt vs. sour cream. • Dessert alternatives! Apple cake is mmm for the lips but a nightmare for the hips. Opt for fresh fruits. • Stay hydrated! Aim for at least 64 ounces of water each day. • Be realistic! Chances are you WILL give in to temptation. Don’t beat up yourself. Just use moderation.

Have a Stress Free Thanksgiving! 1. Get Enough Sleep This is the number one cause of stress, we run ourselves ragged and don’t take the time to relax and recharge. A good night’s sleep will have you feeling refreshed and ready to take on the holidays. 2. Know your Boundaries If you have accepted to cook the holiday meal, make sure you know just how many family members will be attending your feast. Know when to say no to extra stragglers that family members might want to bring along. This will make your meal planning easier.

2

3. Count to 10 It is a good thing to take a breath and count to ten to collect yourself. You will make it through! 4. Let Bygones be Bygones There will be family members who love to make snarky little comments, we all have one of those in our families. The best way to approach this is to just ignore the comment and hopefully, they will stop once they see they haven’t gotten a rise out of you. 5. Keep Everyone Busy Assign people duties, get the kids to set the table, have Aunt Margie help with dinner, get everyone involved so you don’t have to take it all on yourself. Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks for what we have in our lives. Go around the dinner table and have everyone state what he or she are thankful for; don’t forget to remember those who have passed to keep them in spirit.

But when we use cash, it hurts. • Set a budget. • Keep a spending diary. • Be Mindful Of What - And Why - You’re Spending. • Sleep on it - Consider giving big purchases a 24-hour cooling-off period. • Consider What Your ____ Would Say About Your Spending. • Think About Why You Want To Shop On Black Friday So Badly.

Organizing Grand Lakes Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. Have you been trained as a CERT member? Leslie Power and Shelia Maneffa are interested in gathering names together of CERT trained individuals who live in Grand Lakes. please email Leslie at freetofly1234@gmail.com if you are a member and would like to be included in this Grand Lakes Team. TEEN CERT trained members are welcome as well. We hope to get to know other CERT in Grand Lakes and be better organized and prepared to help one another in a crisis situation when first responders may not be readily available. visit www.citizencorps.gov/cert if you have not been trained but would like more information. CRIME WATCH UPDATE Earlier this year, several homeowners in Grand Lakes were victims of home burglaries. The burglaries happened during the early evening hours, often while the homeowners were away at dinner. Generally, the intruders broke in through large windows in the rear of the houses, often at the master bedroom. We were fortunate that nobody was hurt, but valuables were taken in each incident and it could have been worse. Participate in Crime Watch and talk to the neighbors next to you, across the street and down the street. Introduce yourself; get to know them and who lives in the household. Encourage them to do the same and pledge to watch out for each other.

POOLS, HARDSCAPES & LANDSCAPES • NEW POOL CONSTRUCTION • • POOL REMODELS & REPAIRS • • POOL CLEANING SERVICE • Weekly pool maintenance

• PATIO COVERS & ARBORS • • DECKS •

Flagstone, pavers, spray deck & stamped concrete

Don’t hesitate to report suspicious persons to the Sheriffs. Reports from citizens are the best sources of information for law enforcement. Contact grandlakescrimewatch@yahoo.com if you would like to be involved in more organized Community Watch efforts. Emergencies or crimes in progress should be immediately reported via “911.” Non-emergency calls should go to Fort bend County Dispatch at 281-341-4665.

• LANDSCAPE DESIGN & INSTALLATION • Custom landscapes, water features and stonework

• IRRIGATION (Lic. 8260) •

Sprinkler system / drainage installation and repair

• LAWN CARE •

Basic lawn maintenance & full-service packages

Keep your outside lights on after dark and consider a home alarm system if you don’t already have one. You might want to take extra precautions to protect the rear of the house and especially the bedroom suite.

• LIGHTSCAPES •

Quality lighting & installation

Enhanced lighting is a quick, inexpensive and effective way of making your home less attractive to criminals. Lights on photocells are a good option, as they come on whenever it gets dark. Some people prefer motion sensors, but whatever you choose, assess your home for the best options and be sure to avoid adding lights that will shine in your neighbor’s windows. If you decide to add exterior fixtures, you first need to submit an Architectural Review application. The form is on the website.

GRAND LAKES PET LOST & FOUND Do you have pets? Love animals? Or do you just want to be able to help your neighbors? Did you know we have a service in Grand Lakes that helps to reunite lost or found pets with their families? If you’re not already receiving pet “amber” alerts, please email Lisa at grandlakes4pets@aol.com and ask to be added to her list. If you ever find a lost pet or lose one of your own you’ll be glad to have this service at your fingertips. Please see more information on page (last page) and in the “Helpful Numbers for Grand Lakes” page in the back.

Pet Poops/You Scoop When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every Grand Lakes homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass!

KEEP YOUR Pets on Leashes It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard) must be on a leash. For the safety of all Grand Lakes residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in Grand Lakes, immediately call Animal Control at 281-3421512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

Stop That Barking! Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you!

6

• Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electric-shock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. • Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.

Grand Lakes Dog Park Grand Lakes welcomes you and your four-legged friend to the community dog park. The park is located in the southeast corner of Grand Lakes: from south Fry Road go south on Rainwood Park Drive, left at Central Park (Grand Brooks Lane), left on Emily Park, left on Grandwood Lane, then right on Calico Crossing. The park and parking lot is on your right toward the end of the street.

5 steps to a happier healthier pet

1. Protect your pet from extreme weather (heat, cold, rain, etc). 2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on a leash when walked. 3. Make sure they’re up to date with vaccinations. 4. Always make sure they’re wearing identification, so they can be returned to you if lost. 5. Spay or neuter your pet. Texas Lab Rescue has labs available that are waiting to go to their forever home. Please go to txlabrescue.org to check out their website.

Parks, Town Square and Common Areas in the Community

In the community of Grand Lakes, there are several common areas for the residents to enjoy. These common areas are restricted to residents for individual and family use and for community events. It is important that we do not abuse these areas with events other than the activities mentioned. The homeowners association maintains all of these areas so if there is any damage to these areas the community pays for it. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our community beautiful.

Turkey Dash Route Through Part of Grand Lakes on Thanksgiving Morning On Thanksgiving Day (November 22nd), the 10th annual YMCA Turkey Dash will take place in which a new 10K race has been added for the 2012 event. The racers will turn east on Emily Park Lane, north on Grandwood Lane, west on Grand Brooks Lane, south on Rainwood Park Lane, west onto Emily Park Lane to exit the neighborhood then back north on Peek. It is estimated that the fastest runners will arrive at the east Emily Park Lane roundabout a little after 8 am. The last runners should be exiting the neighborhood by around 9 am. Police officers and course marshals will be stationed at intersections and along the road for safety along with road cones and signage. Cars will be allowed through as safety allows. This race course has been approved by the Grand Lakes HOA and the County Commissioner. Please be mindful of the racers if your plans require you to leave your home during this time on Thanksgiving morning. For a detailed view of the race course, visit www.ymcaturkeydash.org and click on the Course tab. The racers would love some encouragement as they are running, so feel free to come out and cheer them on as they pass by! Thank you in advance for your support of this charity event and of the race participants.

Ask Your Neighborhood Planner By Craig Narum CFP®, Grand Lakes resident

Section 529 Plans: Saving for College (Part 2 of 2) Last month in Part 1 … How 529 Plans work along with pros and cons. This month … Choosing the Plan That’s Best for Your Family. Section 529 plans are just one of the options you have for college savings. They offer a great deal of flexibility in exchange for a higher level of investment risk. If you’re getting a late start or if your child is unsure of which college he or she wishes to attend, a Section 529 plan may be your best choice. But if you’re starting early on saving for college, you might consider a prepaid tuition plan. This plan allows you to lock in today’s tuition rate, which can mean a savings of thousands of dollars in college costs. Prepaid tuition plans guarantee payment of a semester’s tuition for each unit that you buy and payments may be spread out over several years. Almost all prepaid tuition plans are more restrictive when it comes to choosing a college and they may also be more restrictive in terms of withdrawals. Applicants will typically receive a list of participating colleges that a child can attend. If the child wishes to go to a school outside the plan, the value of the investment may be reduced.

Coverdell Education Savings Accounts (formerly called Education IRAs) allow you to set aside money each year toward a child’s education. The contribution limit is $2,000. Withdrawals for qualified higher education expenses are tax free and account balances can be transferred to siblings without any tax consequences, so long as it is done prior to the previous beneficiary’s 30th birthday and the new beneficiary is under the age of 30. While tax benefits make these accounts attractive, the low contribution limit may not provide enough money to pay for college. Unlike state-sponsored plans, income limits apply for eligibility. Only single filers with incomes of less than $110,000 and joint filers with incomes of less than $220,000 are eligible. As with any financial planning decision, the choice that’s best for you will depend on your unique situation, including your risk tolerance and the number of years until your child begins college. Another consideration is your child’s plans. Does he or she even plan on attending college? If so, has he or she chosen a school? Talk with your child about college, then make an appointment with your financial advisor to find the plan that best suits your needs.

Points to Remember

1. Section 529 plans are state-sponsored plans that allow savings to grow tax deferred, for college expenses. 2. Withdrawals for qualified higher education expenses are tax free. 3. There are no income thresholds and typically no annual contribution limits, although annual contributions of more than $13,000 ($26,000 when made jointly with a spouse) may require filing a federal gift tax form. You may contribute five years’ worth of gifts all at once or $65,000 per beneficiary, without triggering the federal gift tax. 4. You can change the beneficiary of a 529 plan to a sibling, first cousin or other family member (as defined by the Internal Revenue Code) of the original beneficiary. 5. Section 529 plans offer flexibility in college choice. 6. Each state plan has its own professional asset manager. 7. Investment returns are not guaranteed. 8. Prepaid tuition plans offer guaranteed returns but provide less flexibility in choice of college.

KATY ISD GRADUATES SHOW HIGHER ACT SCORES COMPARED TO STUDENTS STATEWIDE ACT reports that Katy ISD graduates for 2012 are more ready for college-level coursework when compared to students across the state. In 2012, more than 1,500 Katy ISD students participated in ACT testing and, as a district, had a higher average score in all four categories than the state average. The Katy ISD average composite score for 2012 was 23.5, while the average composite score for the state was 20.8. The ACT consists of curriculum-based tests of educational development in English, mathematics, reading and science designed to measure the skills needed for success in first year college coursework. ACT research shows that it is the rigor of the coursework that has the greatest impact on ACT performance and college readiness.

PRIVATE SCHOOLS POPE JOHN CC INVITATIONAL Pope John’s cross-country team hosted our first-ever meet, the Lion Pride Invitational. 716 runners from 44 schools competed in eight different categories - from high school varsity 5k to an elementary school 1 mile run. The meet, which was organized by Coach Hilda Gonzales and a group of cross-country team parents, was held on the Pope John campus and garnered much praise from both competitors and coaches. Our Lion runners did the school proud too, with the Girls Varsity team of Kara Christopherson, Maria Gonzales, Brandie Guice, Bethany Villafranca, Bethany Vuyk and Emily Yoder taking home the 3rd place trophy. Two Varsity boys won individual medals: Cameron Guice placed 6th, running the 5K course in 18 minutes 15 seconds and Dylan Brokmeyer was 19th with a time of 19:10. Four Varsity girls won individual medals: Maria Gonzales placed 2nd, running the 5K in 19:38. Emily Yoder was 5th with a 20:51. Brandie Guice, competing in her first Varsity race, was 15th, with a time of 22:25 and Bethany Vuyk placed 16th, with a 22:30. The boys Varsity team of Dylan Brokmeyer, J.P. Gonzales, Cameron Guice, Noah Hearn and Austin Morrison was 5th. Michael Alexander, Josh Chavez, Chris Davidson, Osa Imoisi, Alan Lasater, Sean Reilly, Nathan Schmitt and Kyle Smith ran JV and our JV girls team was Kiersten Hofbauer, Hailey Justus and Jackie Lee. Running a meet the size of the Lion Pride Invitational took numerous volunteers. The school community stepped up to the plate, with many students, parents, faculty and staff willing to show up at 6:00 AM on a Saturday to help with the meet.

Big Back to School and Pet Blessing enjoyed by Fulshear families! When the launch team for New Creation Lutheran Church gathered to plan a first public event, they wanted it to be family oriented and fun to reflect their worshipping community. This goal was achieved at their first annual Blessings Event held the last Sunday in August. Entire families, including pets, came to the Cornelius’ home on James Lane in Fulshear to receive blessings for the new school year! Teachers representing three districts were blessed. Families with roots in Ecuador and Colombia were included, possibly drawn by the launch team’s previous experience supporting education for street children in Peru. Dogs of many breeds romped together, including one retriever who repeatedly jumped into the swimming pool. Thanks to a grant from Fort Bend Thrivent Financial, there were hot dogs to eat and games to play. A large inflatable proved to be the most popular activity. At the end of the day, children left for home with a gift bag, a Bible verse and a smile. All were invited back at a later date for New Creation’s first worship service with Pastor Dale Olson.

Real conversation is not a contest but makes room for many voices whose tone is not violent or abusive but instead as Michael Oakeshott said “humble and conversable.” It offers “the gift of the interval:” when we “look around upon the world without the sense of an enemy at one’s back or the insistent pressure to make up one’s mind.” If you enjoy real conversation about current issues and events with a group having diverse backgrounds and perspectives, join us for a cup of coffee on the 2nd Wednesday of each month in room 303 of the Parish Activity Center from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. All participants are encouraged to offer topics for the group and approximately a week before the meeting, a tentative agenda of topics will be disseminated. Become a Tutor-Understand our Student’s Lifelines Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy.

RUOK Program

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.

Fort Bend County “Leash Law” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law.

November 2012

Grand Lakes

As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

Please note: the following is what the American Egg Board says on using raw eggs:
With eggs and all other raw foods from animals, there is a small possibility of Salmonella food poisoning. The risk is greater for those who are pregnant, elderly or very young and those with medical problems, which have impaired their immune systems. These individuals should avoid raw and undercooked animal foods. Healthy people need to remember that there is a very small risk and treat eggs and other raw animal foods accordingly. Use only properly refrigerated, clean, sound-shelled, fresh, grade AA or A eggs. Avoid mixing yolks and whites with the shell. Refrigerate broken-out eggs, prepared egg dishes and other foods if you won’t be consuming them within an hour.
