ANNUAL HOMEOWNERS’ ASSOCIATION MEETING The date for the Annual Meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 7:00 PM. The meeting will take place at the Cinco Ranch Church of Christ, located adjacent to the subdivision at 6655 S. Mason Road. Please plan to attend. Look for an agenda in the mail in late October/early November. There will be multiple board positions up for election, so please mark your calendars and plan to attend. If you are unable to attend, please be sure to return your proxy to Canyon Gate at Cinco Ranch HOA, 20422 Canyon Gate Blvd., Katy, TX 77450 prior to November 27th.
COUNTRY SIDE MOBILE VET CLINIC VISITS CANYON GATE Mark your calendars! The Country Side Mobile Vet Clinic is scheduled to return to Canyon Gate on Saturday, November 3rd, from 3:00 to 4:30 pm, at the recreation center. Dr. Regina Jamieson is the visiting veterinarian and is licensed by the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. Dr. Jamieson offers packages that include all annual vaccinations, heartworm tests and prevention and flea control. Save a trip to the vet and bring your pet to the Mobile Vet Clinic.
Snakes Homeowners need to be aware that Texas is home to many snakes, including venomous and non-venomous varieties. With the natural areas surrounding the community, Canyon Gate is especially prone to snakes. Please be vigilant when in grassy areas that snakes may hide. If you should see a snake, please do not approach it - they will not normally attack or bite unless provoked. Measures you can take to keep snakes away include the following: • Eliminate debris such as wood or rock piles on the property. • Cut down heavy brush or trim back hedges. • Seal small gaps under doors or decks, etc.
RECREATION CENTER RENTAL
The recreation center has a room available for parties, meeting, reunions, etc. A signed contract plus a $300 security deposit will hold your reservation. Homeowners must be current on their dues (or payment plans) and rental fees must be received prior to the party. The rental rate is $35 an hour with a two-hour

minimum. The key for the clubhouse is to be signed out and returned to the guards in the guardhouse. Please READ THE CONTRACT CAREFULLY before signing - this is a binding legal document and the rules and regulations stipulated in the contract will be enforced. Call the onsite office for additional information. Remember to bring your trash home with you after a party - the clubhouse trashcans are being filled to overflowing regularly. Fines will start being assessed if the rec center trashcans are filled up with party debris.

HARRIS COUNTY TOLL TAGS
Please call the onsite office (281-492-6020) or email us to register your Harris County toll tag (phardilek@ccbpropertymanagement. com). The following information is required: Name, Address, Vehicle Make & Model and Old and New EZ Tag Numbers. Please do not give tag information to the guards - they do not have access to the gate computer. PLEASE REMEMBER to have your old tag number available when you are registering a new tag, so we can remove it from the system.

Dinin
The sticker-type EZ tags can be programmed into the system. However, the signal is not as powerful as that of the battery-powered tags. Please approach the gate slowly and stay as close to the left median as possible (that is where the reader is located); the new tags can’t be read by the system until you are very close to the gate.
REMINDER ABOUT PARKING REGULATIONS The Association would like to remind everyone that there is NO CURBSIDE PARKING between the hours of 11:00 PM - 9:00 AM. VEHICLES IN VIOLATION WILL BE STICKERED. If vehicles are found repeatedly in violation, they will be towed at the owner’s expense. These parking regulations were put in to place to alleviate the difficulty school buses were having navigating the neighborhood and to allow a time for problem-free residential access for emergency vehicles. Safety issues relating to morning work traffic and children going to school, garbage trucks, bike lanes and homeowner complaints about blocked driveways were also concerns. Please remember that angle or perpendicular parking is against deed restrictions. It is also a violation of local ordinance. Please remember that the front and back wheels of a vehicle must be parallel and within 18 inches of the curb. Angle or perpendicular parking may prohibit police, fire or any other emergency personnel from ingress or egress. Violators will have their vehicles stickered and if necessary, towed, if the vehicle is repeatedly found in violation. There is NO PARKING anytime in bicycle lanes. Exceptions to the street parking policy are made only to out of town guests with PRIOR NOTICE given to the office at 281-492-6020. Be sure to give your name and home address, the year, make, model and license plate number of the car, as well as the specific dates that car will be parked in the street.
EZ TAGS FOR FRONT GATE ACCESS The Homeowners’ Association sells EZ tags that will open the resident gate at the Canyon Gate entrance. Residents may purchase these at the onsite office for $35. These EZ tags contain a battery that should last for, approximately, 3 years. The HOA offers a oneyear warranty on these tags. If the battery goes bad and your EZ tag stops working within the first year, the tag will be replaced at no cost. If your EZ tag stops working after the one-year time limit, a new EZ tag will need to be purchased.

They must be on a leash at all times when away from this contained environment. Tips for a Thinner Thanksgiving Apple pie. Mashed potatoes. Butter rolls. Green bean casserole. Stuffed turkey. FORGET THE SALAD. How on earth can you stay slim and trim this Thanksgiving when you’re surrounded by this horn of plenty? We have tips! • Get moving! Try to incorporate some kind of exercise, even if it’s going for a brisk walk. • Eat breakfast! Be sure to eat a healthy, fiber and vitamin packed breakfast to curb those cravings. • Skip the usuals! Skip the mashed potatoes and reach for roasted potatoes. Skip the pie and reach for fruit! • Veggies first! Eat your vegetables first and you’ll feel fuller longer. • Portion control! Don’t even THINK about going back for seconds. • Slow down! Take your time and truly savor every bite. You may not be as hungry as your taste buds say. • Go lighter! Use some lighter options when cooking: skim milk vs. cream, yogurt vs. sour cream. • Dessert alternatives! Apple cake is mmm for the lips but a nightmare for the hips. Opt for fresh fruits. • Stay hydrated! Aim for at least 64 ounces of water each day. • Be realistic! Chances are you WILL give in to temptation. Don’t beat up yourself. Just use moderation.

Vegetarian Thanksgiving Ideas! What about the vegetarian guests during your Thanksgiving festivities? Yes YOU CAN enjoy making some great veggie dishes for everyone. Here are some ideas and find the recipes online: 1. Roasted Acorn Squash with Wild Rice Stuffing 2. Savory Onion and Leek Tart 3. Mushroom and Fennel Bread Pudding 4. Savory Egg Pudding ** use egg substitutions! 5. Roasted Delicata Squash Salad 6. Winter Greens Lasagna 7. Smoked Cheddar Soufflé 8. Winter Greens Soup 9. Celery Root and Squash Gratin with Walnut-Thyme Streusel 10. Broccoli, Mushroom and Gouda Quiche
Have a Stress Free Thanksgiving! 1. Get Enough Sleep This is the number one cause of stress, we run ourselves ragged and don’t take the time to relax and recharge. A good night’s sleep will have you feeling refreshed and ready to take on the holidays. 2. Know your Boundaries If you have accepted to cook the holiday meal, make sure you know just how many family members will be attending your feast. Know when to say no to extra stragglers that family members might want to bring along. This will make your meal planning easier. 3. Count to 10 It is a good thing to take a breath and count to ten to collect yourself. You will make it through!

4. Let Bygones be Bygones There will be family members who love to make snarky little comments, we all have one of those in our families. The best way to approach this is to just ignore the comment and hopefully, they will stop once they see they haven’t gotten a rise out of you. 5. Keep Everyone Busy Assign people duties, get the kids to set the table, have Aunt Margie help with dinner, get everyone involved so you don’t have to take it all on yourself. Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks for what we have in our lives. Go around the dinner table and have everyone state what he or she are thankful for; don’t forget to remember those who have passed to keep them in spirit.

8 Tips to Avoid Over Spending on Black Friday Do you get a rush when you purchase something? Scientifically, it’s no surprise that we get this rush - just like with any other pleasurable activity, shopping can spur the release of feel-good hormones in our brains. Here are some tips for keeping your overspending and overbuying in check this Black Friday, the holiest of shopping holidays. • Skip the sales all together • Pay with cash - When we use credit cards, there’s very little pain associated. But when we use cash, it hurts. • Set a budget. • Keep a spending diary. • Be Mindful Of What - And Why - You’re Spending. • Sleep on it - Consider giving big purchases a 24-hour cooling-off period. • Consider What Your ____ Would Say About Your Spending. • Think About Why You Want To Shop On Black Friday So Badly.

KATY ISD GRADUATES SHOW HIGHER ACT SCORES COMPARED TO STUDENTS STATEWIDE ACT reports that Katy ISD graduates for 2012 are more ready for college-level coursework when compared to students across the state. In 2012, more than 1,500 Katy ISD students participated in ACT testing and, as a district, had a higher average score in all four categories than the state average. The Katy ISD average composite score for 2012 was 23.5, while the average composite score for the state was 20.8. The ACT consists of curriculum-based tests of educational development in English, mathematics, reading and science designed to measure the skills needed for success in first year college coursework. ACT research shows that it is the rigor of the coursework that has the greatest impact on ACT performance and college readiness. For more information about ACT testing and scoring, visit www.actstudent.org

SIRE, Houston’s Therapeutic Equestrian Centers The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equineassisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Clients become more empowered and better equipped to fully live their lives, each day. To volunteer, please call one of our arenas and ask to speak with a volunteer coordinator. Big Back to School and Pet Blessing enjoyed by Fulshear families! When the launch team for New Creation Lutheran Church gathered to plan a first public event, they wanted it to be family oriented and fun to reflect their worshipping community. This goal was achieved at their first annual Blessings Event held the last Sunday in August. Entire families, including pets, came to the Cornelius’ home on James Lane in Fulshear to receive blessings for the new school year! Teachers representing three districts were blessed. Families with roots in Ecuador and Colombia were included, possibly drawn by the launch team’s previous experience supporting education for street children in Peru. Dogs of many breeds romped together, including one retriever who repeatedly jumped into the swimming pool. Thanks to a grant from Fort Bend Thrivent Financial, there were hot dogs to eat and games to play. A large inflatable proved to be the most popular activity. At the end of the day, children left for home with a gift bag, a Bible verse and a smile. All were invited back at a later date for New Creation’s first worship service with Pastor Dale Olson.

Adult Conversation Group
Real conversation is not a contest but makes room for many voices whose tone is not violent or abusive but instead as Michael Oakeshott said “humble and conversable.” It offers “the gift of the interval:” when we “look around upon the world without the sense of an enemy at one’s back or the insistent pressure to make up one’s mind.” If you enjoy real conversation about current issues and events with a group having diverse backgrounds and perspectives, join us for a cup of coffee on the 2nd Wednesday of each month in room 303 of the Parish Activity Center from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. All participants are encouraged to offer topics for the group and approximately a week before the meeting, a tentative agenda of topics will be disseminated. Become a Tutor-Understand our Student’s Lifelines Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy.

RUOK Program
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.
Fort Bend County “Leash Law” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law.
November 2012
Canyon Gate @ CR
As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

Please note: the following is what the American Egg Board says on using raw eggs: With eggs and all other raw foods from animals, there is a small possibility of Salmonella food poisoning. The risk is greater for those who are pregnant, elderly or very young and those with medical problems, which have impaired their immune systems. These individuals should avoid raw and undercooked animal foods. Healthy people need to remember that there is a very small risk and treat eggs and other raw animal foods accordingly. Use only properly refrigerated, clean, sound-shelled, fresh, grade AA or A eggs. Avoid mixing yolks and whites with the shell. Refrigerate broken-out eggs, prepared egg dishes and other foods if you won’t be consuming them within an hour.
