• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

November 2012 Thanksgiving Trivia

Thanksgiving was celebrated throughout the colonies after fall harvests. However, all thirteen colonies did not celebrate Thanksgiving at the same time until October 1777. In 1789, George Washington declared the day a holiday. Sarah J. Hale, a poet, had begun lobbying for a national Thanksgiving holiday. During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln, looking for ways to unite the nation, discussed the subject with Hale. He gave his Thanksgiving Proclamation in 1863 and declared the last Thursday in November a day of thanksgiving. In 1941, President Roosevelt signed a bill making the fourth Thursday the official holiday. Each year, the President of the United States pardons a turkey before Thanksgiving at a White House ceremony. The tradition’s origin is uncertain. One story claims that Harry Truman pardoned a turkey in 1947, but the Truman Library has been unable to find any evidence for this. Another claims that the tradition dates back to Abraham Lincoln pardoning his son Tad’s pet turkey. Remember the men and women fighting for our freedom in locations near and far. They are there defending our right to celebrate Thanksgiving.

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, can be thrilling and stressful all at the same time. With stores offering drastically marked-down prices on in-demand items on Black Friday, Thanksgiving Day sales bring big crowds and long lines are to be expected. To successfully make it through the mall without being pummeled by other moms looking for a good deal, we have some tips and tricks to make your holiday shopping spree a little easier: Weeks Before Black Friday: • Make a list of the must-have products that you are shopping for this holiday season, including the names of the people for whom you are shopping. This will make your day more organized and will reduce the number of unnecessary purchases that you make. • Sign up for store email updates so that you will be among the first to know what will be on sale. • Print out any online coupons you may have. • Sign up for free store club cards that offer discounts or coupons. Stores like Barnes & Noble offer such programs. • Consider outlet shopping. The Day Before Black Friday: • Eat a lot of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pie. This will not help your shopping, per se, but will make you feel happy and satisfied. • Get a good’s night sleep the night before. Thanks to all that food in your belly it shouldn’t be too hard to fall asleep. The Day Of Thanksgiving Day Sales: • Know exactly the time that the stores you want to hit are open and go to the store that has the best deals and/or the gift you want to get the most first. Be there at least a half-hour before it opens if the gift is popular. • Leave the kids at home; this is not a day to worry about handholding and good behavior. • Be caffeinated and full - don’t shop on low energy and an empty stomach. • Pack snacks so that you don’t have to stop your marathon-shopping day to grab some grub from the food court. • Bring along a MP3 player or portable CD player to help pass the time when you are waiting to pay for your finds. • Don’t worry about purchasing little gifts today, such as stocking stuffers, but rather focus on gifts that are bigger, harder to find and more expensive. • Consider this a good day to look for that new winter coat or little black dress you need. Clothing sales are usually very good on Black Friday, because so many people are already in the stores looking for toys and gifts. • If a product is not available, but the store offers a rain check, take it. CY-FAIR RESIDENTS TO SPEND LESS TIME ON US 290 AS KEY CONSTRUCTION COMPLETION DATES MOVE UP Cy-Fair residents and businesses can expect to get some muchneeded traffic relief on one of the top 25 congested roads in Texas. Thanks to $168 million in funding provided by state legislators and part of the additional $2 billion TxDOT identified earlier this year, some key construction projects along US 290 in Houston will be completed up to two decades earlier than originally scheduled. The completion of critical projects also means travelers will see a 40 percent decrease in time spent in traffic along US 290. TxDOT and the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) are working to finalize an agreement to provide the needed funding allocated by the Legislature. Under the agreement, TxDOT will contribute $787 million and HCTRA $400 million putting all US 290 projects between IH 610 and SH 99 (Grand Parkway) under construction by the middle of 2014. Project plans include: • Reconstruction and widening of US 290 • Four general purpose lanes for in and outbound traffic • Two to three reversible managed lanes in the middle to carry HOV and tolled traffic • Future construction of the parallel Hempstead Tollway • A bike trail and right-of-way preservation for a high-capacity transit system • Additional safety improvements that should reduce the number of accidents that typically cause big delays

CY-WOODS HIGH SCHOOL CY-WOODS WRAP PROGRAM WRAP (Wildcats Right After Prom) is Cy-Woods High School’s parentdriven Project Prom organization. The purpose of WRAP is to provide a drug and alcohol-free, all-night party for the graduating seniors and their guests after their prom. SCHOOL NEWS PRIVATE SCHOOLS Cypress Christian School Father and Son Raise Flags Each Weekday at CCS Michael Shassere and his son, Nicolas, began raising the American, Te x a s a n d Christian flags at CCS each weekday morning at the beginning of last year, when Nicolas needed a service project for Cub Scouts. Mr. Shassere writes, “Nicolas enjoyed this so much that he asked Elementary Principal Mr. White if this could be ‘our service to CCS.’ As we all know, parents are rushed in the mornings getting children ready for school, carpooling and off to class. With this project, Nicolas and I enjoy focused father-son time, sharing in the fact that even such a small act is an act of selflessness and as such, honors God, our country, our state and all the staff at CCS.”

Cy-Christian Students JAM to Set Record Students and teachers at Cypress Christian School - along with children and adults from around the country - took a one minute fitness break to participate in the first ever JAM World Record 2012. It was a quick, easy and FUN routine for students of all ages and abilities. THIRD ANNUAL CYPRESS HOOPS INVITATIONAL Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) is gearing up for their highly anticipated Cypress Hoops Invitational Tournament to be held for the third year December 6 through 8, 2012. Twenty-four high school varsity level teams, including those from Cy-Fair ISD and outside the district, will compete over the three-day event at various high schools with the championship games held at the Berry Center. It takes a lot of community volunteers to put on an event that is as well run and organized as the Cypress Hoops Invitational. “Instrumental in last year’s event were John Fox, Fox and Bubela and Leslie Martone, who is now President of the Cy-Fair Chamber of Commerce and sponsors such as the event’s underwriter, North Cypress Medical Center,” said Hull. Last year the tournament raised $17,161.58. All proceeds raised through entry fees, game tickets and sponsorships go to the Foundation’s “Donate to Educate” program, which provides college scholarships for district students as well as staff development grants to CFISD. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD and 30 of its schools were honored as recipients of the Texas Comptroller’s 2012 Texas Honors Circle Award, recognizing schools and districts that are achieving academic success through cost-effective operations. Award recipients achieved strong academic performance while spending relatively little compared to their peers. Only 329 school campuses statewide received this distinction for high rankings in the 2012 Financial Allocation Study for Texas (FAST), meaning CFISD accounted for 9.1 percent of all Honors Circle campuses statewide.

The nationwide competition prompts musical groups to submit recordings, which are then rated by professional and collegiate judges. CHIROPRACTIC HEALTH and WELLNESS CENTER Copper Corners Service Unit is planning a number of events for the coming year. Girl Scout events begin with girl planning, so we’ll be recruiting girls from the service unit to bring their suggestions and ideas to these planning boards. Some of these events will be Daisy Day and Brownie Day, for those two age levels, as well as an event for older girls (Junior level and above). Leader/Daughter Weekend is a chance for busy leaders to spend time with their OWN daughters. Past LeaderDaughter weekends have included a miz of camp activities with the extra fun of visiting Wimberley on the way home. We are also planning a “Me and My Guy” event later in the year, when girls will have a special evening with their special “guy” (dad, granddad, other relative or special friend). It is always a memorable event, whether it involves a formal dance or a baseball game! If you have plans to visit the State Fair of Texas, be sure to see the Girl Scout exhibition area. Those who have say it is very impressive and quite an experience! Don’t miss out on the fun! It is never too late to join Girl Scouts! Girl Scouting is open to all girls between the ages of 5 (must be in kindergarten) to 18, who are willing to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. FUNDRAISERS Young Brothers Taekwondo Team Legacy hosting golf tournament fundraiser Young Brothers Taekwondo Team Legacy is hosting an inaugural Golf Tournament as a fundraiser on November 16, 2012 at Longwood Golf Club in Cypress, TX. All proceeds from this event will be used to offset costs of traveling to and participating in tournaments throughout Texas and across the country. Our team members compete at tournaments at all levels from local to international. Every July, we travel to Ft. Lauderdale, FL to compete at the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) National Taekwondo Championship. We also compete at the international US Open tournament, which this year will be held in Las Vegas.

Upward Basketball and Cheerleading Bear Creek Baptist Church is offering Upward Basketball and Cheerleading for K-8th Grade. Cost is $75 for Basketball and $80 for Cheerleading. The Shimmer Flute Ensemble was founded in January 2006 to provide flute players in the Houston area more opportunities to perform and to socialize. They have performed at a number of local venues including the Sam Houston Park Candlelight Tours, Heights Home Tour, Texas Children’s Hospital, the Children’s Museum of Houston and for the Jones Plaza Live! series. Cypress UMC Goes Back to School A Church’s Challenge to Volunteer Not content with giving $8,000 to a local elementary school last February, the members of Cypress UMC are now volunteering hundreds of hours on CFISD campuses. The congregation was challenged by their senior pastor, Jerome Brimmage, to volunteer a total of 2,000 hours within ninety days. In addition to volunteering on various campuses, Cypress UMC has adopted a second school, Millsap Elementary. The church previously adopted Adam Elementary in the spring of 2011. As the beginning of school approached, the church donated, delivered and organized enough school supplies in August for 250 students, to be split between Millsap and Adam.

BROCCOLI GRATIN WITH MUSTARD-CHEESE STREUSEL

Ingredients: 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter 1/3 cup minced onion 2 large garlic cloves, minced 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard 4 tablespoons Dijon mustard 2 1/2 cups fresh breadcrumbs made from crustless sourdough bread 1 cup (packed) grated Parmesan cheese (about 3 ounces) 12 to 13 cups broccoli florets (from about 3 pounds broccoli crowns) 1/2 cup whipping cream   DIRECTIONS:  Melt butter in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic; sauté until onion is soft, about 4 minutes. Mix in dry mustard, then 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard, blending well. Add breadcrumbs; sauté until crumbs are crisp and golden, stirring and pressing with back of fork to separate, about 8 minutes. Season with salt and pepper; cool completely. Mix in 3/4 cup cheese. Cook broccoli florets in large pot of boiling generously salted water until crisp-tender, about 3 minutes. Drain. Transfer to paper towels; cool. (Streusel and broccoli can be made 1 day ahead. Cover separately and refrigerate.) Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter 13x9x2-inch glass baking dish. Place broccoli in large bowl. Add whipping cream, remaining 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard and 1/4 cup cheese; toss to coat evenly. Arrange broccoli in prepared dish. Sprinkle streusel over. Ingredients: 1 (9 inch) prepared chocolate cookie crumb crust 4 eggs 1 cup butter, softened 8 (1 ounce) squares semisweet chocolate 2 cups confectioners’ sugar 1 cup smooth peanut butter 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream DIRECTIONS: Melt 6 ounces semi sweet chocolate and cool to room temperature. Beat the eggs with 3/4 cup butter or margarine, chocolate and confectioners’ sugar for a FULL 5 minutes. Mixture will be thick and smooth. In a separate bowl, beat the peanut butter, 1/4 cup butter, and cream. Spoon chocolate filling into crust. Swirl peanut butter filling into chocolate filling. Drizzle remaining 2 oz of melted chocolate on top of pie. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour and serve.
