LEASH LAW Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.”

While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet. Please remember that cats fall under the same laws as dogs and must be licensed and kept restrained when not on the premises of the owner. We’ve been told that spreading moth balls in flower beds might keep cats away. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact: Harris County Precinct #5, Contract #87: 281-463-6666 Harris County Animal Control: 281-999-3191 Harris County Health Department, Rabies/Animal Control Section 2223 West Loop South, Houston, Texas 77027-3588 www.countypets.com

Thanksgiving Trivia
Thanksgiving was celebrated throughout the colonies after fall harvests. However, all thirteen colonies did not celebrate Thanksgiving at the same time until October 1777. In 1789, George Washington declared the day a holiday. Sarah J. Hale, a poet, had begun lobbying for a national Thanksgiving holiday. During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln, looking for ways to unite the nation, discussed the subject with Hale. He gave his Thanksgiving Proclamation in 1863 and declared the last Thursday in November a day of thanksgiving. In 1941, President Roosevelt signed a bill making the fourth Thursday the official holiday. Each year, the President of the United States pardons a turkey before Thanksgiving at a White House ceremony. The tradition’s origin is uncertain. One story claims that Harry Truman pardoned a turkey in 1947, but the Truman Library has been unable to find any evidence for this. Another claims that the tradition dates back to Abraham Lincoln pardoning his son Tad’s pet turkey. Remember the men and women fighting for our freedom in locations near and far. They are there defending our right to celebrate Thanksgiving.
SURVIVING BLACK FRIDAY
Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, can be thrilling and stressful all at the same time. With stores offering drastically marked-down prices on in-demand items on Black Friday, Thanksgiving Day sales bring big crowds and long lines are to be expected. To successfully make it through the mall without being pummeled by other moms looking for a good deal, we have some tips and tricks to make your holiday shopping spree a little easier: Weeks Before Black Friday: • Make a list of the must-have products that you are shopping for this holiday season, including the names of the people for whom you are shopping. This will make your day more organized and will reduce the number of unnecessary purchases that you make. • Sign up for store email updates so that you will be among the first to know what will be on sale. • Print out any online coupons you may have. • Sign up for free store club cards that offer discounts or coupons. Stores like Barnes & Noble offer such programs. • Consider outlet shopping.

The Day Before Black Friday: • Eat a lot of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pie. This will not help your shopping, per se, but will make you feel happy and satisfied. • Get a good’s night sleep the night before. Thanks to all that food in your belly it shouldn’t be too hard to fall asleep. The Day Of Thanksgiving Day Sales: • Know exactly the time that the stores you want to hit are open and go to the store that has the best deals and/or the gift you want to get the most first. Be there at least a half-hour before it opens if the gift is popular. • Leave the kids at home; this is not a day to worry about handholding and good behavior. • Be caffeinated and full - don’t shop on low energy and an empty stomach. • Pack snacks so that you don’t have to stop your marathon-shopping day to grab some grub from the food court. • Bring along a MP3 player or portable CD player to help pass the time when you are waiting to pay for your finds. • Don’t worry about purchasing little gifts today, such as stocking stuffers, but rather focus on gifts that are bigger, harder to find and more expensive. • Consider this a good day to look for that new winter coat or little black dress you need. Clothing sales are usually very good on Black Friday, because so many people are already in the stores looking for toys and gifts. • If a product is not available, but the store offers a rain check, take it. Make sure that when you cash in your rain check you are getting the price that the product was listed at for that day. www.kaboose.com

Ga r d e ni n g tips
• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

KATY ISD GRADUATES SHOW HIGHER ACT SCORES COMPARED TO STUDENTS STATEWIDE ACT reports that Katy ISD graduates for 2012 are more ready for college-level coursework when compared to students across the state. In 2012, more than 1,500 Katy ISD students participated in ACT testing and, as a district, had a higher average score in all four categories than the state average. The Katy ISD average composite score for 2012 was 23.5, while the average composite score for the state was 20.8. The ACT consists of curriculum-based tests of educational development in English, mathematics, reading and science designed to measure the skills needed for success in first year college coursework. ACT research shows that it is the rigor of the coursework that has the greatest impact on ACT performance and college readiness. CAP PILOT MAKES ANOTHER LANDING WITHOUT ENGINE Okay, so it was a glider! We all recall the incredible skill and composure displayed when 1st Lt Sarah Rovner successfully landed her CAP Cessna at night on a city street in Conroe, Texas, when she experienced engine failure. This was a truly remarkable feat under the circumstances. Perhaps this event sparked her curiosity about flying an aircraft without an engine. As a result, Sarah has tried her wings at soaring. On September 14th, she and instructor Lt. Col. Eston Hupp made a couple of flights in a Blanic L-23 at the Soaring Club of Houston airfield in Waller County, Texas. The soaring club is a CAP affiliate support group and the home for the CAP 2-33 glider. The club hosts the annual Cadet Glider Encampment. Cadets are given glider orientation flights. Sarah was heard to say that she was surprised at how easy the glider was to fly and how peaceful and serene the sensation was, floating effortlessly in the sky. Col. Hupp told her she could make the transition to soaring with very little effort on her part. We hope all her future landings without an engine are in gliders. By: Lt Col. Eston Hupp

Nicholas is being treated for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) at MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital in Houston. Nicholas received the computer from Caitlyn Mortus, a junior at Seven Lakes High School, who is a cancer survivor herself. She started the organization after she was declared cancer free in August 2010 from her desire to help kids who were still in the hospital battling a serious illness. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through November. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Make Plans to Visit the Cornerstone UMC Live Nativity The Cornerstone United Methodist Church (CUMC) will be hosting a Live Nativity on Saturday, December 8th, from 6-8 PM, as we transform the front area of the church into scenes that will depict the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. There will be shepherds with their sheep, the Three Wise Men and a camel, Mary and Joseph with baby Jesus in a manger and an angel portraying this holy event. You will be able to visually embrace this event as you drive through, read scriptures and listen to music that tell of the wondrous night. In the past, we have had several hundred cars that drive through to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas - the birth of Jesus Christ. We are located at 18081 West Road at Barker Cypress behind the CVS. For directions or more information, please go to our website at www.cornerstoneumc.org or call the church at 281-859-4141.

have a stress free thanksgiving! 1. Get Enough Sleep This is the number one cause of stress, we run ourselves ragged and don’t take the time to relax and recharge. A good night’s sleep will have you feeling refreshed and ready to take on the holidays. 2. Know your Boundaries If you have accepted to cook the holiday meal, make sure you know just how many family members will be attending your feast. Know when to say no to extra stragglers that family members might want to bring along. This will make your meal planning easier. 3. Count to 10 It is a good thing to take a breath and count to ten to collect yourself. You will make it through! 4. Let Bygones be Bygones There will be family members who love to make snarky little comments, we all have one of those in our families. The best way to approach this is to just ignore the comment and hopefully, they will stop once they see they haven’t gotten a rise out of you. 5. Keep Everyone Busy Assign people duties, get the kids to set the table, have Aunt Margie help with dinner, get everyone involved so you don’t have to take it all on yourself.
Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks for what we have in our lives. Go around the dinner table and have everyone state what he or she are thankful for; don’t forget to remember those who have passed to keep them in spirit.

Add onion and garlic; sauté until onion is soft, about 4 minutes. Mix in dry mustard, then 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard, blending well. Cover separately and refrigerate.) Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter 13x9x2-inch glass baking dish. Place broccoli in large bowl. Add whipping cream, remaining 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard and 1/4 cup cheese; toss to coat evenly. Arrange broccoli in prepared dish. Sprinkle streusel over. Please note: the following is what the American Egg Board says on using raw eggs: With eggs and all other raw foods from animals, there is a small possibility of Salmonella food poisoning. The risk is greater for those who are pregnant, elderly or very young and those with medical problems, which have impaired their immune systems. These individuals should avoid raw and undercooked animal foods. Healthy people need to remember that there is a very small risk and treat eggs and other raw animal foods accordingly. Use only properly refrigerated, clean, sound-shelled, fresh, grade AA or A eggs. Avoid mixing yolks and whites with the shell. Refrigerate broken-out eggs, prepared egg dishes and other foods if you won’t be consuming them within an hour.

Please call HPCA OFFICE at 281-463-1216 to reach a board member.
PURPOSE OF HUNTER’S PARK COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION Hunter’s Park Community Association handles the financial and legal affairs of the subdivision. Each lot owner is required to pay an annual maintenance fee which is used to pay street lights; pay taxes on and maintain the common areas, such as the swimming pools, tennis courts, etc.; pay for security; and pay legal expenses incurred to enforce the deed restrictions. The Board meets every other month at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room at the community building. Residents are welcome to attend. Anyone wishing to place an item on the agenda should call the HPCA office in advance. The Annual Meeting of Members is held on the 4th Thursday of January. Members hold three year staggered terms and are elected. The election process is as follows: 1) Mail in ballots will be mailed out with the Annual Maintenance fee statements. 2) Voting in person will begin on the 1st Monday after the Annual Meeting ending on the following Saturday at 7pm.
HPCA Office
Office Phone: 281 463-1216 Office Hrs: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Mon- Fri. Closed Weekends and Major Holidays HPCA employs two workers to provide coverage for the office. Every effort is made to have one of the two employees in the office at all times. Occasionally business of the association may require us to be out of the office for a short period of time. If we are out of the office when you call or if you call after hours, please leave a message on the answering machine and your calls will be returned as soon as possible during office hours.

DEED RESTRICTIONS Deed restrictions are strictly enforced by Hunter’s Park Community Association. Copies of the restrictions are available at the association’s office or by mail (call 281 463-1216). Complaint forms are included in every Bear Creek Newsletter for your convenience. The association’s office verifies complaints and writes letters to violators. HPCA will initiate legal action when warranted, to enforce the deed restrictions. ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL You must submit any plans for improvements or modifications of your home to the Hunter’s Park Community Association Office. Your plans will be checked to insure that they comply with the deed restrictions. This includes re-roofing, playforts (8 ft. height limit), temporary storage buildings, etc. Please call the office at 281 463-1216 if you need any additional help or assistance. SECURITY Hunter’s Park Community Association provides additional security currently through a contract with Commissioners Court for four Harris County Constables. HPCA also hires off-duty deputies on an as-needed basis for additional coverage. Please call the Constable’s Office at 281 463-6666 to report any suspicious person, activity or for vacation watch. There is a voluntary $2.00 security contribution on the M.U.D. #6 water bill that goes to each homeowner. The voluntary contributions can only be used to pay for security. This contribution enables HPCA to provide more coverage without raising maintenance fees. Judy - Security Directory - HPCA - (281) 463-1216
