BERKSHIRE GARAGE SALE Garage Sale will be scheduled in November, please look at website for dates.
Come Join Your Neighbors Thursday, December 6, 2012 at 6:30 PM Berkshire residents are invited to attend this annual familyfriendly movie showing at the Yorktown 15 RAVE in a theater designated just for Berkshire. Share some holiday spirit and meet your other Berkshire neighbors. Remember, as a Berkshire resident, the family-friendly movie, popcorn and drinks are FREE! Again this year, Berkshire will participate in a program to provide new toys to under privileged children. This charity event has been very popular with our residents. Please bring any new stuffed toy with you on December 6th to donate to this cause. What a joy to have this opportunity to brighten some child’s day. This year we will also collect monetary donations to be given to a needy family. Residents are encouraged to bring a name of a deserving family. Many thanks to Berkshire board member Beola Baker, coordinator and Berkshire residents, the John (Michelle) Riddle family for volunteering to assist with this event. If you would like to volunteer to help with this event, please contact Margie Naranjo at PCMI.
Berkshire Celebrated National Night Out!
November 2012
Tuesday, October 2, 2012, was National Night Out in Texas and Berkshire celebrated with activities, food and speakers. Residents came out and met neighbors while also learning about the culture of India from fellow resident, Annapurna Jonnalagadda. She explained the meaning of the colors in the flag as well as displaying Indian art and pieces that depicted Indian culture. Thank you Anna. Residents enjoyed hearing from speakers from the community regarding lowering the speed limit within Berkshire and a Chili’s “give back program” to help raise money for scholarships for Berkshire graduates. Shanna Lopez from Waste Management gave a very informative overview on the recycling program that recently started in Berkshire. Deputies Wingo and Thomas informed residents of law enforcement procedures and activities within the community. Toys were distributed to the kids and Papa John’s pizza was served. Giveaways included gas, restaurant and store gift cards as well as services donated by local businesses. Thank you to Celebrity Cuts Barbershop and Pizza Hut for their donations. National Night Out is a program to send a message to criminals that a neighborhood has banded together to fight against drugs and crime. Thank you Berkshire for your support. Your HOA Board

Recycling
Are you interested in recycling? The Board would like to begin recycling in the community, however our trash contract is through Harris County MUD 276 and is charged to your MUD bill. In order to institute a recycling program in the community, the MUD requires we have a majority vote of the homeowners. To vote, please log on to the web site and click “Contact Form” under the “Welcome” tab, complete and send or you may email Margie Naranjo directly at mnaranjo@stes.com. Please be certain to include your name and property address in your email. The additional cost for recycling is approximately $3.15 per home, per month. •••••••••• Published by: Krenek Printing 7102 Glen Chase Ct • Houston, TX 77095 • 281-463-8649 November 2012 Berkshire News email: news@krenekprinting.com for articles • ads@krenekprinting.com for business ads • classified@krenekprinting.com for classified ads

If you notice any suspicious activity in the community, please call the Harris County Sheriff ’s Department non-emergency number at 713-221-6000 and provide as many details as possible.
Home Security Tips
Doors: • Use your locks - a lock is only useful if you use it. • Make sure your doorways are visible from the street and not obscured by shrubs, etc.
Trash In & Around the Community
We have a contractor on property every Thursday who does odd jobs and picks up trash around the community. The problem with trash in and around the community is increasing. Please help us keep the community clean by not littering and taking the time to pick up any trash you notice on your street and/or around your home. We have a volunteer in the community who is interested in starting a “Clean Up Committee” to assist with this problem. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Margie Naranjo at PCMI.
Parking on the Street
Windows: • Make sure your windows have good locking mechanisms. • Make sure windows are visible from the street and not obscured by shrubs, etc.
The Association receives numerous complaints a day regarding cars parked in the street. Parking in the street not only looks bad but also creates a safety hazard. Please refrain from parking in the street as it is against the Deed Restrictions. Vehicles should be parked in the garage or in the driveway at all times.
Landscape: • Keep trees and shrubbery trimmed to prevent concealment for a potential burglar.
Running a Business from your Home
Lighting: • Timers on lights give your house the lived-in look while you are away. Alarms: • Remember, like a lock, an alarm is only valuable if you use it.

CAREYDENTISTRY.COM
The Association has become aware of some homeowners running a business from their home. Please note that the Berkshire community is a “single family” home community and running a business from your home is strictly prohibited. These homes are being monitored by our contracted Harris County Sheriff, as well as our property manager. Be advised that the Board of Directors will take all measures, including legal action, to see that this practice is stopped.
Graffiti
Please report any graffiti you may see in the community to Margie Naranjo at PCMI.
Address Stones
Please be certain that shrubs are trimmed away from address stones. This is very important for 911 emergency vehicles.
Trashcans
Trashcans MUST be stored out of public view except on days of trash pick up. Also, please remember to remove trashcans from the curb in a timely manner after trash pick up.
Flat Curbs
Please refrain from parking vehicles on the flat curbs. Vehicles parked on the curbs eventually cause damage and deterioration. Further note that storage of vehicles on streets or within road right-of-way is specifically prohibited.

Loose Dogs
To report loose dogs please contact Harris County Animal Control at 281-999-3191.
Notice to Pet Owners
We love dogs - we really do. That’s why the association is committed to enforcing the county leash law on association property. According to the U.S. Humane Society, an unleashed dog has an average life span of less than four years. Allowing your dog to run free threatens your dog’s health and welfare and the happiness it brings to you. We also love our community. That’s another reason the association is committed to enforcing the county leash law - so all residents may enjoy our community. We trust we can count on you for voluntary compliance with the leash law. We don’t like to call animal control, but we won’t have any choice if your dog is running free.
Tennis Courts
Please be advised that tennis courts are to be used for playing tennis only. A tennis court key is required to enter the tennis courts and children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Anyone found to be in the tennis courts for reasons other than playing tennis will be immediately reported as trespassing. If you are in need of a tennis court key, please contact Margie Naranjo at PCMI. Keys are $10 each. You may mail your check, payable to Berkshire CAI, to Margie and a key will be sent to you in the mail. Please remember to note “tennis court key” in the memo section of your check.
Meeting Room
If you are interested in renting the meeting room, please see the website for more information or contact Margie Naranjo at PCMI.

Thanksgiving Trivia
Thanksgiving was celebrated throughout the colonies after fall harvests. However, all thirteen colonies did not celebrate Thanksgiving at the same time until October 1777. In 1789, George Washington declared the day a holiday. Sarah J. Hale, a poet, had begun lobbying for a national Thanksgiving holiday. During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln, looking for ways to unite the nation, discussed the subject with Hale. He gave his Thanksgiving Proclamation in 1863 and declared the last Thursday in November a day of thanksgiving. In 1941, President Roosevelt signed a bill making the fourth Thursday the official holiday. Each year, the President of the United States pardons a turkey before Thanksgiving at a White House ceremony. The tradition’s origin is uncertain. One story claims that Harry Truman pardoned a turkey in 1947, but the Truman Library has been unable to find any evidence for this. Another claims that the tradition dates back to Abraham Lincoln pardoning his son Tad’s pet turkey. Remember the men and women fighting for our freedom in locations near and far. They are there defending our right to celebrate Thanksgiving.

It takes a lot of community volunteers to put on an event that is as well run and organized as the Cypress Hoops Invitational. “Instrumental in last year’s event were John Fox, Fox and Bubela and Leslie Martone, who is now President of the Cy-Fair Chamber of Commerce and sponsors such as the event’s underwriter, North Cypress Medical Center,” said Hull.
Where “Volunteers are Treasures!” All of our volunteers are true treasured heroes. They help in the library, sell school spirit items, organize fundraisers, read to a classroom, make costumes and test vision and hearing. The list is endless and their experience is vast. If you listen to their stories though, you will find that in all the things volunteers do, there is an element of discovery. They find not only what a child can do, but what their own treasured gift might be. And yes, there has probably even been an encounter with a dragon or two along the way. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is so fortunate to be able to draw from such a great diversity of skills and knowledge in our community. VIPS (Volunteers in Public Schools) in Cy-Fair ISD center the attention of their service on supporting students and staff and making a significant contribution to the education of children. These jewels in our district give freely of their time and resources and have an impact on the academic and personal development of Cy-Fair ISD students. If you are interested in being involved in Cy-Fair schools as a volunteer and making a difference or would like more information, please contact Pam Scott, Partners in Education Director at, 281-894-3950. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through November. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

have a stress free thanksgiving! 1. Get Enough Sleep This is the number one cause of stress, we run ourselves ragged and don’t take the time to relax and recharge. A good night’s sleep will have you feeling refreshed and ready to take on the holidays. 2. Know your Boundaries If you have accepted to cook the holiday meal, make sure you know just how many family members will be attending your feast. Know when to say no to extra stragglers that family members might want to bring along. This will make your meal planning easier. 3. Count to 10 It is a good thing to take a breath and count to ten to collect yourself. You will make it through! 4. Let Bygones be Bygones There will be family members who love to make snarky little comments, we all have one of those in our families. The best way to approach this is to just ignore the comment and hopefully, they will stop once they see they haven’t gotten a rise out of you. 5. Keep Everyone Busy Assign people duties, get the kids to set the table, have Aunt Margie help with dinner, get everyone involved so you don’t have to take it all on yourself.
Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks for what we have in our lives. Go around the dinner table and have everyone state what he or she are thankful for; don’t forget to remember those who have passed to keep them in spirit.

Please note: the following is what the American Egg Board says on using raw eggs: With eggs and all other raw foods from animals, there is a small possibility of Salmonella food poisoning. The risk is greater for those who are pregnant, elderly or very young and those with medical problems, which have impaired their immune systems. These individuals should avoid raw and undercooked animal foods. Healthy people need to remember that there is a very small risk and treat eggs and other raw animal foods accordingly. Use only properly refrigerated, clean, sound-shelled, fresh, grade AA or A eggs. Avoid mixing yolks and whites with the shell. Refrigerate broken-out eggs, prepared egg dishes and other foods if you won’t be consuming them within an hour.
