All proxies received by 7:30 pm on November 29, 2012 will be included with the ballots for the drawing for the winner of the Apple iPad.

Thanksgiving Trivia

Thanksgiving was celebrated throughout the colonies after fall harvests. However, all thirteen colonies did not celebrate Thanksgiving at the same time until October 1777. In 1789, George Washington declared the day a holiday. Sarah J. Hale, a poet, had begun lobbying for a national Thanksgiving holiday. During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln, looking for ways to unite the nation, discussed the subject with Hale. He gave his Thanksgiving Proclamation in 1863 and declared the last Thursday in November a day of thanksgiving. In 1941, President Roosevelt signed a bill making the fourth Thursday the official holiday. Each year, the President of the United States pardons a turkey before Thanksgiving at a White House ceremony. The tradition’s origin is uncertain. One story claims that Harry Truman pardoned a turkey in 1947, but the Truman Library has been unable to find any evidence for this. Another claims that the tradition dates back to Abraham Lincoln pardoning his son Tad’s pet turkey. Remember the men and women fighting for our freedom in locations near and far. They are there defending our right to celebrate Thanksgiving.

Coyote Packs Seen In Concord Bridge There have been packs of coyotes seen in Concord Bridge over the past several months. On at least 3 or 4 occasions they have killed small animals. Do Not leave a small animal outside without supervision. The coyotes will attack and kill them.

281-408-0028 281-763-4310 Cell Deed Restrictions Deed restrictions are in place to maintain continuity within the neighborhood. Without these standards, a home could be left in disrepair or abandoned and could become a plight to our neighborhood. At entrances to the neighborhood, there are signs declaring deed restrictions are strictly enforced and when you purchased the home you were given a copy of the deed restrictions. Please remember, this is a legal document in place to protect the value of your home. Crest Management handles most of the business transactions for Concord Bridge under the direction of your board of directors. If you don’t understand any correspondence from Crest Management, please call for clarification. The homeowners association pays for all correspondence related to deed restrictions; therefore, duplicate letters cost us additional fees. Do not ignore correspondence from Crest Management!

Bandit Signs Bandit signs are signs that have been illegally placed on traffic signs, light poles and other public properties. People often post these signs looking for missing and found pets. The signs are usually paper which tears and deteriorates in the weather, leaving a mess to look at and clean up. The most effective method to recover a lost pet or locate an owner is through the Concord Bridge Pet Hotline at 281-468-9414. We have had a lot of success in reuniting pets and owners through this service. There is also a Facebook page, Concord Bridge Pet Hotline.

Harris County Alarm Permit A permit is required for all alarms in Harris County. Obtaining the required permit will avoid the issuance of a citation and excessive false alarm fees. The permit application can be downloaded from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office website at www.hcso.hctx.net and click on forms. The application should be completed and mailed with the appropriate fees to the address shown on the application. A new permit will cost $35 and annual renewals are $10. Should you have any questions, please contact the Alarm Detail office at 713-755-4600 during normal business hours.

IMPORTANT DATES

November 21st - 23rd - Student/Staff Holiday

THIRD ANNUAL CYPRESS HOOPS INVITATIONAL Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) is gearing up for their highly anticipated Cypress Hoops Invitational Tournament to be held for the third year December 6 through 8, 2012. Twenty-four high school varsity level teams, including those from Cy-Fair ISD and outside the district, will compete over the three-day event at various high schools with the championship games held at the Berry Center.

7

It takes a lot of community volunteers to put on an event that is as well run and organized as the Cypress Hoops Invitational. “Instrumental in last year’s event were John Fox, Fox and Bubela and Leslie Martone, who is now President of the Cy-Fair Chamber of Commerce and sponsors such as the event’s underwriter, North Cypress Medical Center,” said Hull.

Elementary campuses receiving the award achieved a five-star FAST rating, while middle and high-school campuses tapped for the honor achieved at least a 4.5-star FAST rating.

Last year the tournament raised $17,161.58. All proceeds raised through entry fees, game tickets and sponsorships go to the Foundation’s “Donate to Educate” program, which provides college scholarships for district students as well as staff development grants to CFISD. For more information about ways to participate, contact Marie Holmes at 281-807-3591 or marie@thecfef.org (email).

CFISD BANDS EARN MARKS OF EXCELLENCE FROM FOUNDATION OF MUSIC EDUCATION

CFISD SCHOOLS EARN TEXAS HONORS CIRCLE AWARDS

Cypress-Fairbanks ISD and 30 of its schools were honored as recipients of the Texas Comptroller’s 2012 Texas Honors Circle Award, recognizing schools and districts that are achieving academic success through cost-effective operations. Award recipients achieved strong academic performance while spending relatively little compared to their peers. Only 329 school campuses statewide received this distinction for high rankings in the 2012 Financial Allocation Study for Texas (FAST), meaning CFISD accounted for 9.1 percent of all Honors Circle campuses statewide. CFISD was one of only 43 Texas districts to earn the five-star rating from the office of Susan Combs, Texas Comptroller, for academic and financial performance. A five-star rating reflects the strongest relative academic progress combined with the lowest relative spending.

Go to www.cfisd.net/newsmedia/press/2012/0925circle.htm to see a list of the recognized schools.

Three high school bands and three middle school bands have been selected as Mark of Excellence winners by the Foundation of Music Education. The nationwide competition prompts musical groups to submit recordings, which are then rated by professional and collegiate judges. CFISD’s Mark of Excellence national winners are: • Cypress Ranch High School symphonic band, under the direction of Russell Holcombe, in the New Music category • Cypress Woods High School full symphony orchestra, under the direction of Vicki Campion and Mickey Vasquez • Salyards Middle School chamber orchestra, under the direction of Glynnes Lanthier • Cook Middle School percussion ensemble, under the direction of Michael Dick CFISD’s Mark of Excellence commended winners are: • Langham Creek High School band, under the direction of Gloria Ramirez • Cook Middle School symphonic band, under the direction of Michael Dick “It is a tribute to the directors and the students that we have so many groups recognized at the national level by the Mark of Excellence project,” said Larry Matysiak, CFISD director of fine arts. “It also speaks well of our community that the arts are highly valued in our district.”

CY-FAIR ISD & VOLUNTEERS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS (VIPS)

Where “Volunteers are Treasures!” All of our volunteers are true treasured heroes. They help in the library, sell school spirit items, organize fundraisers, read to a classroom, make costumes and test vision and hearing. The list is endless and their experience is vast. If you listen to their stories though, you will find that in all the things volunteers do, there is an element of discovery. They find not only what a child can do, but what their own treasured gift might be. And yes, there has probably even been an encounter with a dragon or two along the way. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is so fortunate to be able to draw from such a great diversity of skills and knowledge in our community. VIPS (Volunteers in Public Schools) in Cy-Fair ISD center the attention of their service on supporting students and staff and making a significant contribution to the education of children. These jewels in our district give freely of their time and resources and have an impact on the academic and personal development of Cy-Fair ISD students. If you are interested in being involved in Cy-Fair schools as a volunteer and making a difference or would like more information, please contact Pam Scott, Partners in Education Director at, 281-894-3950.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through November. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Make Plans to Visit the Cornerstone UMC Live Nativity

The Cornerstone United Methodist Church (CUMC) will be hosting a Live Nativity on Saturday, December 8th, from 6-8 PM, as we transform the front area of the church into scenes that will depict the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. There will be shepherds with their sheep, the Three Wise Men and a camel, Mary and Joseph with baby Jesus in a manger and an angel portraying this holy event. You will be able to visually embrace this event as you drive through, read scriptures and listen to music that tell of the wondrous night. In the past, we have had several hundred cars that drive through to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas - the birth of Jesus Christ. We are located at 18081 West Road at Barker Cypress behind the CVS. For directions or more information, please go to our website at www.cornerstoneumc.org or call the church at 281-859-4141.

have a stress free thanksgiving! 1. Get Enough Sleep This is the number one cause of stress, we run ourselves ragged and don’t take the time to relax and recharge. A good night’s sleep will have you feeling refreshed and ready to take on the holidays.

11740 Barker Cypress www.joelmuller.com Hablamos Español State Farm Insurance

Providing Insurance and Financial Services Home Office: Bloomington, Illinois 61710

2. Know your Boundaries If you have accepted to cook the holiday meal, make sure you know just how many family members will be attending your feast. Know when to say no to extra stragglers that family members might want to bring along. This will make your meal planning easier. 3. Count to 10 It is a good thing to take a breath and count to ten to collect yourself. You will make it through! 4. Let Bygones be Bygones There will be family members who love to make snarky little comments, we all have one of those in our families. The best way to approach this is to just ignore the comment and hopefully, they will stop once they see they haven’t gotten a rise out of you. 5. Keep Everyone Busy Assign people duties, get the kids to set the table, have Aunt Margie help with dinner, get everyone involved so you don’t have to take it all on yourself.

Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks for what we have in our lives. Go around the dinner table and have everyone state what he or she are thankful for; don’t forget to remember those who have passed to keep them in spirit.

Cook broccoli florets in large pot of boiling generously salted water until crisp-tender, about 3 minutes. Drain. Transfer to paper towels; cool. (Streusel and broccoli can be made 1 day ahead. Cover separately and refrigerate.) Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter 13x9x2-inch glass baking dish. Place broccoli in large bowl. Add whipping cream, remaining 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard and 1/4 cup cheese; toss to coat evenly. Arrange broccoli in prepared dish. Sprinkle streusel over. Bake until broccoli is heated through and streusel is browned, about 30 minutes. Source: www.epicurious.com

Please note: the following is what the American Egg Board says on using raw eggs:
With eggs and all other raw foods from animals, there is a small possibility of Salmonella food poisoning. The risk is greater for those who are pregnant, elderly or very young and those with medical problems, which have impaired their immune systems. These individuals should avoid raw and undercooked animal foods. Healthy people need to remember that there is a very small risk and treat eggs and other raw animal foods accordingly. Use only properly refrigerated, clean, sound-shelled, fresh, grade AA or A eggs. Avoid mixing yolks and whites with the shell. Refrigerate broken-out eggs, prepared egg dishes and other foods if you won’t be consuming them within an hour.
