Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow 8pm Friday, Nov. 5th • 12 - 8pm to mellow.

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, can be thrilling and stressful all at the same time. With stores offering drastically marked-down prices on in-demand items on Black Friday, Thanksgiving Day sales bring big crowds and long lines are to be expected. To successfully make it through the mall without being pummeled by other moms looking for a good deal, we have some tips and tricks to make your holiday shopping spree a little easier: Weeks Before Black Friday: • Make a list of the must-have products that you are shopping for this holiday season, including the names of the people for whom you are shopping. This will make your day more organized and will reduce the number of unnecessary purchases that you make. • Sign up for store email updates so that you will be among the first to know what will be on sale. • Print out any online coupons you may have. • Sign up for free store club cards that offer discounts or coupons. Stores like Barnes & Noble offer such programs. • Consider outlet shopping. The Day Before Black Friday: • Eat a lot of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pie. Be there at least a half-hour before it opens if the gift is popular. • Leave the kids at home; this is not a day to worry about handholding and good behavior. • Be caffeinated and full - don’t shop on low energy and an empty stomach. • Pack snacks so that you don’t have to stop your marathon-shopping day to grab some grub from the food court. • Bring along a MP3 player or portable CD player to help pass the time when you are waiting to pay for your finds. • Don’t worry about purchasing little gifts today, such as stocking stuffers, but rather focus on gifts that are bigger, harder to find and more expensive. • Consider this a good day to look for that new winter coat or little black dress you need. Clothing sales are usually very good on Black Friday, because so many people are already in the stores looking for toys and gifts. • If a product is not available, but the store offers a rain check, take it. Most will be taken by the pound or shelter and those are overflowing with pets. They cannot help but have to euthanize some. You, as a responsible pet owner can be of great help by having your cat or dog spayed or neutered and not worry about finding homes for the offspring. You will have a healthier and happy pet. Another and very important thing you can do is have a collar with some form of ID and your phone number on it. Pet stores have special ID’s for your pets. Many pet owners are now “chipping” the pets. If found and taken to a vet they can scan chip and find the owner. If your pet has a rabies tag, the vet has your name and #. The first thing I ask a caller is “does the pet have ID on it.” If it does, I will help contact the # on the ID and get the pet to it’s owner ASAP. Or, the owner can pick up their lost pet. Having an ID on a pet makes life easier for all.

Make Plans to Visit the Cornerstone UMC Live Nativity The Cornerstone United Methodist Church (CUMC) will be hosting a Live Nativity on Saturday, December 8th, from 6-8 PM, as we transform the front area of the church into scenes that will depict the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. FUNDRAISERS Young Brothers Taekwondo Team Legacy hosting golf tournament fundraiser Young Brothers Taekwondo Team Legacy is hosting an inaugural Golf Tournament as a fundraiser on November 16, 2012 at Longwood Golf Club in Cypress, TX. All proceeds from this event will be used to offset costs of traveling to and participating in tournaments throughout Texas and across the country. Our team members compete at tournaments at all levels from local to international. Every July, we travel to Ft. Lauderdale, FL to compete at the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) National Taekwondo Championship. We also compete at the international US Open tournament, which this year will be held in Las Vegas. eam Legacy is the competition team at Young Brothers Taekwondo in the Copperfield area of Houston, TX. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit under the AAU. Our mission is to develop high quality competitors through intense training and mentor leadership. This program is designed for students who wish to excel in Taekwondo and who have demonstrated a sincere desire to commit themselves to furthering their level of achievement in competition.

Registration is $400 for a four-person team and $115 per individual player. We also have sponsorship opportunities available at $100 (hole sponsorship) to $400 (team sponsorship). Honorees in the Wall of Fame are identified by their commitment and contributions to the educational experience of CFISD. Among his accomplishments, Mr. Wells received the Ernest and Sarah Butler Award for Excellence in Science Teaching. Mr. Wells has been with Cy-Fair ISD for 10 years and he is an original Spartan at Cy-Lakes High School. THIRD ANNUAL CYPRESS HOOPS INVITATIONAL Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) is gearing up for their highly anticipated Cypress Hoops Invitational Tournament to be held for the third year December 6 through 8, 2012. Twenty-four high school varsity level teams, including those from Cy-Fair ISD and outside the district, will compete over the three-day event at various high schools with the championship games held at the Berry Center. It takes a lot of community volunteers to put on an event that is as well run and organized as the Cypress Hoops Invitational. “Instrumental in last year’s event were John Fox, Fox and Bubela and Leslie Martone, who is now President of the Cy-Fair Chamber of Commerce and sponsors such as the event’s underwriter, North Cypress Medical Center,” said Hull.

Last year the tournament raised $17,161.58. All proceeds raised through entry fees, game tickets and sponsorships go to the Foundation’s “Donate to Educate” program, which provides college scholarships for district students as well as staff development grants to CFISD. Upward Basketball and Cheerleading

Bear Creek Baptist Church is offering Upward Basketball and Cheerleading for K-8th Grade. Cost is $75 for Basketball and $80 for Cheerleading. They will have one hour of practices a week and on Saturdays they will have a game for one hour. Every practice and game takes place on our Campus. They will learn great new skills from encouraging coaches. Each child needs to attend one evaluation session. Our first Evaluations will be Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, November 5th, 6th and 8th, between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM in our Gym on the North side of our Church. Flute Concert at Cornerstone United Methodist Church

At 2:00 PM on November 4th, Cornerstone United Methodist Church (UMC) is hosting a concert of Flute music present by the Shimmer Flute Ensemble and The Houston Flute Choir. The Shimmer Flute Ensemble was founded in January 2006 to provide flute players in the Houston area more opportunities to perform and to socialize. They have performed at a number of local venues including the Sam Houston Park Candlelight Tours, Heights Home Tour, Texas Children’s Hospital, the Children’s Museum of Houston and for the Jones Plaza Live! series. The Houston Flute Choir is part of the Houston Flute Club, which sponsors many local events for area flute players, both students and adults, and hosts Flute Fest at the University of Houston every spring. Cypress UMC Goes Back to School A Church’s Challenge to Volunteer Not content with giving $8,000 to a local elementary school last February, the members of Cypress UMC are now volunteering hundreds of hours on CFISD campuses. The congregation was challenged by their senior pastor, Jerome Brimmage, to volunteer a total of 2,000 hours within ninety days.

CY-FAIR RESIDENTS TO SPEND LESS TIME ON US 290 AS KEY CONSTRUCTION COMPLETION DATES MOVE UP Cy-Fair residents and businesses can expect to get some much-needed traffic relief on one of the top 25 congested roads in Texas. Thanks to $168 million in funding provided by state legislators and part of the additional $2 billion TxDOT identified earlier this year, some key construction projects along US 290 in Houston will be completed up to two decades earlier than originally scheduled. The completion of critical projects also means travelers will see a 40 percent decrease in time spent in traffic along US 290. TxDOT and the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) are working to finalize an agreement to provide the needed funding allocated by the Legislature. Under the agreement, TxDOT will contribute $787 million and HCTRA $400 million putting all US 290 projects between IH 610 and SH 99 (Grand Parkway) under construction by the middle of 2014. Project plans include: • Reconstruction and widening of US 290 • Four general purpose lanes for in and outbound traffic • Two to three reversible managed lanes in the middle to carry HOV and tolled traffic • Future construction of the parallel Hempstead Tollway • A bike trail and right-of-way preservation for a high-capacity transit system • Additional safety improvements that should reduce the number of accidents that typically cause big delays

RECIPES Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie

BROCCOLI GRATIN WITH MUSTARD-CHEESE STREUSEL

Ingredients: 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter 1/3 cup minced onion 2 large garlic cloves, minced 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard 4 tablespoons Dijon mustard 2 1/2 cups fresh breadcrumbs made from crustless sourdough bread 1 cup (packed) grated Parmesan cheese (about 3 ounces) 12 to 13 cups broccoli florets (from about 3 pounds broccoli crowns) 1/2 cup whipping cream   DIRECTIONS:  Melt butter in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic; sauté until onion is soft, about 4 minutes. Mix in dry mustard, then 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard, blending well. Add breadcrumbs; sauté until crumbs are crisp and golden, stirring and pressing with back of fork to separate, about 8 minutes. Season with salt and pepper; cool completely. Mix in 3/4 cup cheese. Cook broccoli florets in large pot of boiling generously salted water until crisp-tender, about 3 minutes. Drain. Transfer to paper towels; cool. (Streusel and broccoli can be made 1 day ahead. Cover separately and refrigerate.) Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter 13x9x2-inch glass baking dish. Place broccoli in large bowl. Add whipping cream, remaining 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard and 1/4 cup cheese; toss to coat evenly. Arrange broccoli in prepared dish. Sprinkle streusel over. Ingredients: 1 (9 inch) prepared chocolate cookie crumb crust 4 eggs 1 cup butter, softened 8 (1 ounce) squares semisweet chocolate 2 cups confectioners’ sugar 1 cup smooth peanut butter 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream DIRECTIONS: Melt 6 ounces semi sweet chocolate and cool to room temperature. Beat the eggs with 3/4 cup butter or margarine, chocolate and confectioners’ sugar for a FULL 5 minutes. Mixture will be thick and smooth. In a separate bowl, beat the peanut butter, 1/4 cup butter, and cream. Spoon chocolate filling into crust. Swirl peanut butter filling into chocolate filling. Drizzle remaining 2 oz of melted chocolate on top of pie. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour and serve.
