night. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow 8pm Friday, Nov. 5th • 12 - 8pm to mellow.

SURVIVING BLACK FRIDAY
Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, can be thrilling and stressful all at the same time. With stores offering drastically marked-down prices on in-demand items on Black Friday, Thanksgiving Day sales bring big crowds and long lines are to be expected. To successfully make it through the mall without being pummeled by other moms looking for a good deal, we have some tips and tricks to make your holiday shopping spree a little easier: Weeks Before Black Friday: • Make a list of the must-have products that you are shopping for this holiday season, including the names of the people for whom you are shopping. This will make your day more organized and will reduce the number of unnecessary purchases that you make. • Sign up for store email updates so that you will be among the first to know what will be on sale. • Print out any online coupons you may have. • Sign up for free store club cards that offer discounts or coupons. Stores like Barnes & Noble offer such programs. • Consider outlet shopping. The Day Before Black Friday: • Eat a lot of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pie. This will not help your shopping, per se, but will make you feel happy and satisfied. • Get a good’s night sleep the night before. Thanks to all that food in your belly it shouldn’t be too hard to fall asleep. The Day Of Thanksgiving Day Sales: • Know exactly the time that the stores you want to hit are open and go to the store that has the best deals and/or the gift you want to get the most first. Be there at least a half-hour before it opens if the gift is popular. • Leave the kids at home; this is not a day to worry about handholding and good behavior. • Be caffeinated and full - don’t shop on low energy and an empty stomach. • Pack snacks so that you don’t have to stop your marathon-shopping day to grab some grub from the food court. • Bring along a MP3 player or portable CD player to help pass the time when you are waiting to pay for your finds. • Don’t worry about purchasing little gifts today, such as stocking stuffers, but rather focus on gifts that are bigger, harder to find and more expensive. • Consider this a good day to look for that new winter coat or little black dress you need. Clothing sales are usually very good on Black Friday, because so many people are already in the stores looking for toys and gifts. • If a product is not available, but the store offers a rain check, take it. Make sure that when you cash in your rain check you are getting the price that the product was listed at for that day. www.kaboose.com

Deerfield Village Pet Hot Line Marie Nugent 281-859-1104 Kittens and puppies are being dumped in Subdivisions and shopping strips. They will not find good homes. Most will be taken by the pound or shelter and those are overflowing with pets. They cannot help but have to euthanize some. You, as a responsible pet owner can be of great help by having your cat or dog spayed or neutered and not worry about finding homes for the offspring. You will have a healthier and happy pet. Another and very important thing you can do is have a collar with some form of ID and your phone number on it. Pet stores have special ID’s for your pets. Many pet owners are now “chipping” the pets. If found and taken to a vet they can scan chip and find the owner. If your pet has a rabies tag, the vet has your name and #. The first thing I ask a caller is “does the pet have ID on it.” If it does, I will help contact the # on the ID and get the pet to it’s owner ASAP. Or, the owner can pick up their lost pet. Having an ID on a pet makes life easier for all.
40 Something 40 Something is a social group for people over fifty. The group meets the 2nd Saturday each month for socializing, cards and dominos. If you would like further information, please call Dorothy at 713-856-6987 or JoAnn at 281-550-8162.

As interest in Relay for Life grew in the Houston area, the American Cancer Society began forming events in local communities and the first Cy-Fair Relay for Life committee was formed in 2004. This is our 9th year in Cy-Fair and our goal is to reach the $1 Million Dollar Mark. We are very close and only need $150,000 to meet our goal and with YOUR help, we can make this goal a reality!! 100% of our profits go to ACS to use for research and other programs. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through November. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

THIRD ANNUAL CYPRESS HOOPS INVITATIONAL Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) is gearing up for their highly anticipated Cypress Hoops Invitational Tournament to be held for the third year December 6 through 8, 2012. Twenty-four high school varsity level teams, including those from Cy-Fair ISD and outside the district, will compete over the three-day event at various high schools with the championship games held at the Berry Center. It takes a lot of community volunteers to put on an event that is as well run and organized as the Cypress Hoops Invitational. “Instrumental in last year’s event were John Fox, Fox and Bubela and Leslie Martone, who is now President of the Cy-Fair Chamber of Commerce and sponsors such as the event’s underwriter, North Cypress Medical Center,” said Hull.

Last year the tournament raised $17,161.58. All proceeds raised through entry fees, game tickets and sponsorships go to the Foundation’s “Donate to Educate” program, which provides college scholarships for district students as well as staff development grants to CFISD. For more information about ways to participate, contact Marie Holmes at 281-807-3591 or marie@thecfef.org (email).
CY-FAIR ISD & VOLUNTEERS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS (VIPS)
Where “Volunteers are Treasures!” All of our volunteers are true treasured heroes. They help in the library, sell school spirit items, organize fundraisers, read to a classroom, make costumes and test vision and hearing. The list is endless and their experience is vast. If you listen to their stories though, you will find that in all the things volunteers do, there is an element of discovery. They find not only what a child can do, but what their own treasured gift might be. And yes, there has probably even been an encounter with a dragon or two along the way. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is so fortunate to be able to draw from such a great diversity of skills and knowledge in our community. VIPS (Volunteers in Public Schools) in Cy-Fair ISD center the attention of their service on supporting students and staff and making a significant contribution to the education of children. These jewels in our district give freely of their time and resources and have an impact on the academic and personal development of Cy-Fair ISD students. If you are interested in being involved in Cy-Fair schools as a volunteer and making a difference or would like more information, please contact Pam Scott, Partners in Education Director at, 281-894-3950.

At 2:00 PM on November 4th, Cornerstone United Methodist Church (UMC) is hosting a concert of Flute music present by the Shimmer Flute Ensemble and The Houston Flute Choir. Ars Lyrica presents ‘Pypeth the Watche!’ - 3 PM, Tuesday, November 13, 2012. During the Renaissance and for the next few centuries, the Stadtpfeifer (or “Wait” in England and “Piffaro” in Italy) bands were musical watchmen who proved their watchfulness by piping loudly all over cities during the night, waking residents to announce that all was well. In honor of this little-known (but deeply influential) renaissance Stadtpfeifer tradition, the Shepherd School Crumhorn Collective will present a lively program of German, English, Flemish and French polyphony and dance music, written by and for 16th century civic minstrels. Tickets: $6 - $12. All Children’s Series concerts are free and no tickets are distributed.

Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed. November 29-December 15, 2012, (Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday). All performances begin at 8 pm. Price- $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. CY-FAIR RESIDENTS TO SPEND LESS TIME ON US 290 AS KEY CONSTRUCTION COMPLETION DATES MOVE UP Cy-Fair residents and businesses can expect to get some much-needed traffic relief on one of the top 25 congested roads in Texas. Thanks to $168 million in funding provided by state legislators and part of the additional $2 billion TxDOT identified earlier this year, some key construction projects along US 290 in Houston will be completed up to two decades earlier than originally scheduled. The completion of critical projects also means travelers will see a 40 percent decrease in time spent in traffic along US 290. TxDOT and the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) are working to finalize an agreement to provide the needed funding allocated by the Legislature. Under the agreement, TxDOT will contribute $787 million and HCTRA $400 million putting all US 290 projects between IH 610 and SH 99 (Grand Parkway) under construction by the middle of 2014. Project plans include: • Reconstruction and widening of US 290 • Four general purpose lanes for in and outbound traffic • Two to three reversible managed lanes in the middle to carry HOV and tolled traffic • Future construction of the parallel Hempstead Tollway • A bike trail and right-of-way preservation for a high-capacity transit system • Additional safety improvements that should reduce the number of accidents that typically cause big delays

have a stress free thanksgiving! 1. Get Enough Sleep This is the number one cause of stress, we run ourselves ragged and don’t take the time to relax and recharge. A good night’s sleep will have you feeling refreshed and ready to take on the holidays. 2. Know your Boundaries If you have accepted to cook the holiday meal, make sure you know just how many family members will be attending your feast. Know when to say no to extra stragglers that family members might want to bring along. This will make your meal planning easier. 3. Count to 10 It is a good thing to take a breath and count to ten to collect yourself. You will make it through! 4. Let Bygones be Bygones There will be family members who love to make snarky little comments, we all have one of those in our families. The best way to approach this is to just ignore the comment and hopefully, they will stop once they see they haven’t gotten a rise out of you. 5. Keep Everyone Busy Assign people duties, get the kids to set the table, have Aunt Margie help with dinner, get everyone involved so you don’t have to take it all on yourself.
Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks for what we have in our lives. Go around the dinner table and have everyone state what he or she are thankful for; don’t forget to remember those who have passed to keep them in spirit.

Add onion and garlic; sauté until onion is soft, about 4 minutes. Mix in dry mustard, then 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard, blending well. Cover separately and refrigerate.) Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter 13x9x2-inch glass baking dish. Place broccoli in large bowl. Add whipping cream, remaining 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard and 1/4 cup cheese; toss to coat evenly. Arrange broccoli in prepared dish. Sprinkle streusel over. Please note: the following is what the American Egg Board says on using raw eggs: With eggs and all other raw foods from animals, there is a small possibility of Salmonella food poisoning. The risk is greater for those who are pregnant, elderly or very young and those with medical problems, which have impaired their immune systems. These individuals should avoid raw and undercooked animal foods. Healthy people need to remember that there is a very small risk and treat eggs and other raw animal foods accordingly. Use only properly refrigerated, clean, sound-shelled, fresh, grade AA or A eggs. Avoid mixing yolks and whites with the shell. Refrigerate broken-out eggs, prepared egg dishes and other foods if you won’t be consuming them within an hour.
