GLENCAIRN CRIME WATCH SECOND TUESDAY of EVERY MONTH

Want to know the best crime prevention device ever invented? A good neighbor! In fact neighbors working together in cooperation with law enforcement can make one of the best crime-fighting teams around. We call it Glencairn Crime Watch. Crime Watch is a crime prevention program, which enlists the active participation of citizens in cooperation with law enforcement to reduce crime in their communities. It involves: (1) Neighbors getting to know each other and working together in a program of mutual assistance. (2) Citizens being trained to recognize and report suspicious activities in their neighborhoods. (3) Implementation of crime prevention techniques, such as home security, Operation Identification and others. You may hear it called Neighborhood Watch, Citizen Crime Watch or Block Watch. The names differ but the idea is the same: Neighbors looking out for each other.

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS Your Board of Directors are volunteers from your community that give up their time in an effort to make Glencairn a better place to live. More importantly, they strive to keep the property values up since your home is probably your single largest investment. We trust you will understand that board members do not mind discussing association issues with members. We respectfully request that homeowners do not approach board members away from board or member meetings to discuss personal deed restriction or collection matters. The individual board members cannot make a decision on an individual basis. It takes a majority vote of the Board to make a decision. That is why the Board meets on Mondays before the member meeting to discuss issues with members.

DISCOUNT FOR PAINT Sherwin Williams will give a ten per cent (10%) discount to residents of Glencairn. The Glencairn C.I.A., Inc. Board of Directors met with representatives of Sherwin Williams, located on Highway 6 a block before West Little York and provided them with the Association color chart. They will maintain this color chart for residents to use when selecting approved colors. This does not eliminate the submission of an ACC request form to paint your house. The ACC form must still be submitted to ACMP for approval by the ACC Committee. The discount will be for the purchase of paint, paint supplies and equipment. Sherwin Williams Duration paint line is excluded from this discount. Residents just need to inform the sales clerk that they reside in Glencairn. We sincerely appreciate this local business for taking an interest in Glencairn and we ask that you support them. However, you do not have to use Sherwin Williams paint. You may select your color at Sherwin Williams or by going to ACMP where the same color chart is located and take an approved sample color to any paint store you choose to have it matched. Again, the important thing is to submit an ACC form prior to painting. Your ACC Committee and Board of Directors do everything they can within the parameters of the governing documents, to work with all homeowners in a timely manner and on a one on one basis. Harris County Alarm Detail In order to increase compliance and spread awareness, our office is requesting your assistance in informing residents in your community through your HOA newsletter or your scheduled HOA meetings of the need to obtain a permit for operating an alarm system, residential or business, within unincorporated Harris County. Many residents and businesses are unaware of the requirement to obtain an alarm permit once an alarm system has been installed and activated by the alarm company. Alarm systems are established and defined in the Local Government Code 233 (subchapter D), as well as the authority to regulate, adopt rules and impose penalties for unpermitted locations. Obtaining the required permit will avoid the issuance of a citation and excessive false alarm fees. The fee for current permit issuance is $35 with a yearly renewal fee of $10. All permit fees are waived for senior citizens 65 years or older. Under current guidelines, a permitted location is allowed five (5) free false alarms annually. Any subsequent false alarms during your permitted year are subject to a $75 fine that is billed to the permit holder’s address. If a site has an active alarm system, yet does not have a permit to operate such alarm, a false alarm may result in a Class C citation, which could range up to $500. Should you or your residents require a copy of the permit application form or would like to review the regulations regarding permit requirements, you may do so by visiting the Harris County Sheriff’s Office website at www.hcso.hctx./net. The application can be printed from the website, then completed and mailed to our office with the applicable fees. We are currently in the planning stages of making the application and payment process available on-line for the convenience to the public. Should you have any questions, please contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Alarm Detail at 713-7554600 M-F, 8 AM - 5 PM. If you would like any of our Alarm Detail personnel to attend one of your HOA meetings, we would be glad to attend and answer as many questions as possible.

If you are planning to paint, repair, improve or alter the exterior of your house or lot an Architectural Control change request form must be submitted. If you plan to paint, in accordance with the Association governing documents, you must submit a color sample with your change request form EVEN IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO USE THE SAME COLOR already on the structure. We encourage you to plan ahead because the Architectural Control Committee has up to thirty (30) days to approve the form once your request is received by the managing agent. The Architectural Control Committee (ACC) is unique and important function. Its main purpose is to ensure that all changes are harmonious with the surrounding neighborhood and to assist in maintaining property vales. They are volunteers and go about fulfilling their function by ensuring all changes are structurally sound, attractive and harmonious with the neighborhood. The Association has color guidelines that have been set by the Architectural Control Committee and approved by the Board of Directors. These guidelines are comprised of earth-tone and neutral colors. Bright colors will not be approved. If your house is already painted with an unapproved color, then it must be changed the next time it needs painting. However, if you paint it an unapproved color and then submit a change request form, either voluntarily or because you have been cited as being in violation, you will need to repaint the house immediately. Should you have any questions, please, feel free to contact any staff member at ACMP, Inc. ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL COMMITTEE

Pet Hotline News Pet Tip: A very important thing you can do is have a collar with some form of ID and your phone number on it. Pet stores have special ID’s for your pets. Many pet owners are now “chipping” the pets. If found and taken to a vet they can scan chip and find the owner. If your pet has a rabies tag, the vet has your name and #. The first thing I ask a caller is “does the pet have ID on it.” If it does, I will help contact the # on the ID and get the pet to it’s owner ASAP. Or, the owner can pick up their lost pet. Having an ID on a pet makes life easier for all. Marie Nugent - 281-859-1104

Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) is gearing up for their highly anticipated Cypress Hoops Invitational Tournament to be held for the third year December 6 through 8, 2012. Twenty-four high school varsity level teams, including those from Cy-Fair ISD and outside the district, will compete over the three-day event at various high schools with the championship games held at the Berry Center. It takes a lot of community volunteers to put on an event that is as well run and organized as the Cypress Hoops Invitational. “Instrumental in last year’s event were John Fox, Fox and Bubela and Leslie Martone, who is now President of the Cy-Fair Chamber of Commerce and sponsors such as the event’s underwriter, North Cypress Medical Center,” said Hull.

Party Supply

Last year the tournament raised $17,161.58. All proceeds raised through entry fees, game tickets and sponsorships go to the Foundation’s “Donate to Educate” program, which provides college scholarships for district students as well as staff development grants to CFISD. For more information about ways to participate, contact Marie Holmes at 281-807-3591 or marie@thecfef.org (email).

CY-FAIR ISD & VOLUNTEERS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS (VIPS)

Where “Volunteers are Treasures!” All of our volunteers are true treasured heroes. They help in the library, sell school spirit items, organize fundraisers, read to a classroom, make costumes and test vision and hearing. The list is endless and their experience is vast. If you listen to their stories though, you will find that in all the things volunteers do, there is an element of discovery. They find not only what a child can do, but what their own treasured gift might be. And yes, there has probably even been an encounter with a dragon or two along the way. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is so fortunate to be able to draw from such a great diversity of skills and knowledge in our community. VIPS (Volunteers in Public Schools) in Cy-Fair ISD center the attention of their service on supporting students and staff and making a significant contribution to the education of children. These jewels in our district give freely of their time and resources and have an impact on the academic and personal development of Cy-Fair ISD students. If you are interested in being involved in Cy-Fair schools as a volunteer and making a difference or would like more information, please contact Pam Scott, Partners in Education Director at, 281-894-3950. have a stress free thanksgiving! 1. Get Enough Sleep This is the number one cause of stress, we run ourselves ragged and don’t take the time to relax and recharge. A good night’s sleep will have you feeling refreshed and ready to take on the holidays. 2. Know your Boundaries If you have accepted to cook the holiday meal, make sure you know just how many family members will be attending your feast. Know when to say no to extra stragglers that family members might want to bring along. This will make your meal planning easier. 3. Count to 10 It is a good thing to take a breath and count to ten to collect yourself. You will make it through! 4. Let Bygones be Bygones There will be family members who love to make snarky little comments, we all have one of those in our families. The best way to approach this is to just ignore the comment and hopefully, they will stop once they see they haven’t gotten a rise out of you. 5. Keep Everyone Busy Assign people duties, get the kids to set the table, have Aunt Margie help with dinner, get everyone involved so you don’t have to take it all on yourself.

Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks for what we have in our lives. Go around the dinner table and have everyone state what he or she are thankful for; don’t forget to remember those who have passed to keep them in spirit.

RECIPES Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie

BROCCOLI GRATIN WITH MUSTARD-CHEESE STREUSEL

Ingredients: 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter 1/3 cup minced onion 2 large garlic cloves, minced 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard 4 tablespoons Dijon mustard 2 1/2 cups fresh breadcrumbs made from crustless sourdough bread 1 cup (packed) grated Parmesan cheese (about 3 ounces) 12 to 13 cups broccoli florets (from about 3 pounds broccoli crowns) 1/2 cup whipping cream
 DIRECTIONS:
Melt butter in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic; sauté until onion is soft, about 4 minutes. Mix in dry mustard, then 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard, blending well. Add breadcrumbs; sauté until crumbs are crisp and golden, stirring and pressing with back of fork to separate, about 8 minutes. Season with salt and pepper; cool completely. Mix in 3/4 cup cheese. Cook broccoli florets in large pot of boiling generously salted water until crisp-tender, about 3 minutes. Drain. Transfer to paper towels; cool. (Streusel and broccoli can be made 1 day ahead. Cover separately and refrigerate.) Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter 13x9x2-inch glass baking dish. Place broccoli in large bowl. Add whipping cream, remaining 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard and 1/4 cup cheese; toss to coat evenly. Arrange broccoli in prepared dish. Sprinkle streusel over. Bake until broccoli is heated through and streusel is browned, about 30 minutes. Source: www.epicurious.com

Please note: the following is what the American Egg Board says on using raw eggs:
With eggs and all other raw foods from animals, there is a small possibility of Salmonella food poisoning. The risk is greater for those who are pregnant, elderly or very young and those with medical problems, which have impaired their immune systems. These individuals should avoid raw and undercooked animal foods. Healthy people need to remember that there is a very small risk and treat eggs and other raw animal foods accordingly. Use only properly refrigerated, clean, sound-shelled, fresh, grade AA or A eggs. Avoid mixing yolks and whites with the shell. Refrigerate broken-out eggs, prepared egg dishes and other foods if you won’t be consuming them within an hour.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through November. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
