successful annual RAVE movie night The annual RAVE movie night was a success! Berkshire residents enjoyed watching the movie Life of Pi in 3D while snacking on complimentary popcorn and sodas. Community updates were announced along with details about the “give back” program partnered with Chili’s. Please check the Berkshire website for further details. The theater associates were very accommodating in providing whatever was needed to make the event enjoyable. Toys and stuffed animals brought by residents will be donated to Toys for Tots. Monetary funds collected will be donated to The Diaper Foundation. See information below about this organization: The Diaper Foundation (TDF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was founded in November 2009, by Houston’s own, Hope Ewing. The organization strives to make a difference in the community, one diaper at a time, assisting under-privileged parent’s with providing their children and infants with diapering necessities, awareness and hope.

OUR MISSION

The Diaper Foundation’s MISSION is geared towards: • Meeting the maternal and childcare needs of our youngest victims of poverty. • Raising community awareness about the basic infant need for diapers that is not being met. • Educating and servicing the greater Houston area about the disproportionate availability or lack of diaper services offered to mothers. • Partnering with agencies that cater to families living in poverty to assist with supplying infants and toddlers with an adequate supply of diapering supplies. • In low income households, babies often spend an entire day or longer in a single diaper because the family cannot afford to buy an ample supply of diapers; therefore, many babies spend more than a day in one diaper, which leads to potential health and abuse risks. Federally funded programs such as SNAP Food Stamps and The Woman, Infants and Children (WIC), do not cover the cost of diapers for low income parents. A sufficient supply of diapers can cost over $100 per month per child. Some of our beneficiaries are: Life Houston Small Steps Nurturing Center Star of Hope - Houston

Many thanks to Board member, Beola Baker, for creating and continuing this annual event. It could not have gone as smoothly without the help of volunteers Michelle Riddle and her sons, Jared and Jordan, Ruth Orchan and Julie Glascock.

Please be sure to visit the Berkshire website at www.berkshirecai. com and sign up to “Join Our Mailing List.” Check the website often for community updates, events and other important community information. Information on the recycling program is on the Website.

Suspicious Activity

If you notice any suspicious activity in the community, please call the Harris County Sheriff’s Department non-emergency number at 713-221-6000 and provide as many details as possible.

Trash In & Around the Community

We have a contractor on property every Thursday who does odd jobs and picks up trash around the community. The problem with trash in and around the community is increasing. Please help us keep the community clean by not littering and taking the time to pick up any trash you notice on your street and/or around your home. We have a volunteer in the community who is interested in starting a “Clean Up Committee” to assist with this problem. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Margie Naranjo at PCMI.

Parking on the Street

The Association receives numerous complaints a day regarding cars parked in the street. Parking in the street not only looks bad but also creates a safety hazard. Please refrain from parking in the street as it is against the Deed Restrictions. Vehicles should be parked in the garage or in the driveway at all times.

Running a Business from your Home

The Association has become aware of some homeowners running a business from their home. Please note that the Berkshire community is a “single family” home community and running a business from your home is strictly prohibited. These homes are being monitored by our contracted Harris County Sheriff, as well as our property manager. Be advised that the Board of Directors will take all measures, including legal action, to see that this practice is stopped.

Graffiti

Please report any graffiti you may see in the community to Margie Naranjo at PCMI.

Address Stones

Please be certain that shrubs are trimmed away from address stones. This is very important for 911 emergency vehicles.

Trashcans

Trashcans MUST be stored out of public view except on days of trash pick up. Also, please remember to remove trashcans from the curb in a timely manner after trash pick up.

Notice to Pet Owners

We love dogs - we really do. That’s why the association is committed to enforcing the county leash law on association property. According to the U.S. Humane Society, an unleashed dog has an average life span of less than four years. Allowing your dog to run free threatens your dog’s health and welfare and the happiness it brings to you. We also love our community. That’s another reason the association is committed to enforcing the county leash law - so all residents may enjoy our community. We trust we can count on you for voluntary compliance with the leash law. We don’t like to call animal control, but we won’t have any choice if your dog is running free.

Tennis Courts

Please be advised that tennis courts are to be used for playing tennis only. A tennis court key is required to enter the tennis courts and children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Anyone found to be in the tennis courts for reasons other than playing tennis will be immediately reported as trespassing. If you are in need of a tennis court key, please contact Margie Naranjo at PCMI. Keys are $10 each. You may mail your check, payable to Berkshire CAI, to Margie and a key will be sent to you in the mail. Please remember to note “tennis court key” in the memo section of your check.

Meeting Room

If you are interested in renting the meeting room, please see the website for more information or contact Margie Naranjo at PCMI.

CY-FAIR EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION HONORS MILITARY HEROES The Foundation will kick off its fifth “Salute to Our Heroes” event on February 9, 2013 at the Omni Hotel Westside Houston. “Salute to Our Heroes” honors the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Proceeds from this event go to an endowment enabling graduating students from CFISD to attend college.

Following tradition, the event will have the Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony. The table will have empty table settings with chairs leaning up against the table as though saved for someone. The table settings have a single red rose displayed in a vase in reminder of the bloodshed for our country and the vase was tied with a red ribbon - a symbol of the continued pledge to shed blood for our country. A slice of lemon on the bread plate is a reminder of the bitterness of the loss of comrades in arms; a bowl of salt to symbolize the tears shed by family members of lost loved ones and glasses turned upside down indicate no one will sit there. Last year’s ceremony was performed by the 75th Army Division Honor Guard and was proceeded by Taps performed by William Veenstra, Cy-Fair High School Senior. For more information on the 2013 event, please contact Marie Holmes at marie@thecfef.org or 281-807-3591.

The event will be generously underwritten by Earthcare Management and Kodiak Gas Services, as the Missing Man Underwriters. The Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital will be the Major General Sponsor.

This year our guest speaker is Steve Russell. LTC Steve Russell (Ret.) commanded the central unit responsible in the hunt and capture of Saddam Hussein. Through leadership and joint efforts across multiple teams, a large organization worked effectively to capture one of the world’s most notorious criminals. Russell is an American Hero. His proven leadership and problem-resolution techniques engage audiences through his storytelling.

Salute to Our Heroes has two purposes. First, to give tribute to our heroes - soldiers serving now, veterans and those who have been wounded or killed in action. We want to honor those who have served their country.

The second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students. Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school, and the number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission.

Cypress Falls High School students (from left): Amy Cunningham, Zac Babb and Leah Lebeau won Excellent, Honorable Mention and Superior awards, respectively, at the JEA/NSPA 2012 National Convention.

For more information, please contact the Cy-Lakes College and Career Center at Brenda.gauthey@cfisd.net College Ambassadors - January 11th, Cypress Lakes High School. On January 11th about 75 former Cy-Lakes students will visit the campus to share their knowledge and advice about college with current students. This tradition began with Cy-Springs graduates who came to Cy-Lakes in January 2009 and talked about the things they wish they had known before they went off to college. January 11th will mark the fifth year of the program and our own Cy-Lakes alumni will take over as the Cy-Lakes College Ambassadors. These college students continue the Cy-Lakes tradition of showing valor, service and leadership in all that they do.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through January. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
