Christmas Decoration Judging Selections for outstanding decorations were made on Saturday, December 15th after dark. Once again, Wendy and Walter Kessler drove through the neighborhood to make these difficult decisions. We appreciate the time and effort by the Kessler family each year. Pictures will be available in the February Crier.
Annual Meeting and Elections Thank you to all who took the time to attend. We met for the annual meeting and elections on November 29th. In order to conduct the election, we must have a 10% quorum. There were 50 voting homeowners present and we had 117 proxies representing a quorum. Rachel Schmutz advised the membership that there were three positions up for election, which carried two-year terms. The membership was also advised that there were three incumbents for the positions, Mary Ann Harvey, Sandra Peters and Helen Montesinos and one homeowner nominee, Joy Bronte. The floor was opened for additional nominations. There being no additional nominations, a motion was made to close the nominations. The motion was seconded and carried. Each nominee introduced themselves and answered homeowner questions from the floor. The ballots were presented and counted. Two volunteer homeowners validated the count. Mary Ann Harvey, Helen Montesinos and Sandra Peters were elected to the Board. Board president, Mary Ann Harvey, presented the state of the association address and discussed the numerous accomplishments during 2012.

Deed Restrictions Deed restrictions are in place to maintain continuity within the neighborhood. Without these standards, a home could be left in disrepair or abandoned and could become a plight to our neighborhood. At entrances to the neighborhood, there are signs declaring deed restrictions are strictly enforced and when you purchased the home you were given a copy of the deed restrictions. Please remember, this is a legal document in place to protect the value of your home. Crest Management handles most of the business transactions for Concord Bridge under the direction of your board of directors. If you don’t understand any correspondence from Crest Management, please call for clarification. The homeowners association pays for all correspondence related to deed restrictions; therefore, duplicate letters cost us additional fees. Do not ignore correspondence from Crest Management!
Concord Bridge Pet Hotline The pet hotline at www.concordbridgepethotline.com is no longer in service. You can still contact them at 281-468-9414 and on the new Facebook account, Concord Bridge Pet Hotline. You can use this source to report lost and found animals. This has been a great help in returning lost and found animals to their owners. If you don’t have access to Facebook, you can call 281-468-9414. Please note, Harris County requires that all pets be on a leash or confined within your yard.

Summer Activities Would you like to see additional activities in our neighborhood? We would love to have things for our families, but without assistance it is not possible. The board of director’s members all have full time jobs or other family obligations that take up much of our time. We are an unpaid voluntary board with the interest of Concord Bridge at heart. If you have ideas for neighborhood activities, get volunteers to help and present your ideas to the board. We will back legitimate activities to unite with our neighbors. There were several people at the annual meeting that advised they would assist in activities. We encourage you to step forward with your ideas and volunteers to assist.
Vacation Watch Vacations occur year round and the Precinct 5 Constables offer a very valuable service. If you complete a Vacation Watch form they will drive by and check your home while you are away. This form is available on the Precinct 5 Constable’s website, www.co.harris.tx.us/ pct5 on the Concord Bridge website, www.concordbridgeonline.com and in this publication. You can also ask for a copy from one of the officers. Information on how to mail or fax it is on the form. It’s also a good idea to let a trusted neighbor know that you will be gone so they can report unusual activity at your home during your absence.
A NON-WORKING STREET LIGHT? If you encounter a streetlight that is not working, you can report it by phone or on the internet. Please have as much information as possible, the location of the light, approximate address or closest intersection, and if possible, the number on the pole. The only way for a light to be repaired is for us to report it. You can report it by phone at 713-207-2222 or at www.centerpointenergy.com/outage.
TRASH PICK UP Please remember that our trash pick up days are Monday and Thursday. Heavy trash day is Thursday and the trash company is required to pick up heavy items approved on their retrieval list. If a holiday falls on trash day, it will not be picked up the next day. It will be picked up the next scheduled pick up day.
GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY • Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted.

• Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

CONCORD BRIDGE Start a Realistic Exercise Program It’s a New Year and you’re making a promise to yourself to get in better shape and never be breathless again. This time YOU WILL DO THIS! How can you start a realistic exercise regime this time around and not get burned out? Check out these 3 simple steps: 1) Get a full check-up from your physician first. You want to exclude any underlying health problems that could be dangerous when you’re exercising. You want to be cleared to exercise by your doctor before you begin. 2) Start slowly, maybe 20 minutes a day for three days a week, increasing your intervals in five-minute increments to hit exercising five to six times a week for 60 minutes a day, as the federal government suggests. Remember, when you exercise, your heart rate needs to be elevated. You need to be sweating and your heart needs to be pounding. It may take a little time to build up to that. 3) Recognize that every little bit of exercise helps. Some exercise is better than no exercise. If you’re busy or tired or not feeling well and you’re tempted to skip exercising, remember that every bit does a lot of good.
EATING HEALTHIER & TASTIER How can eating healthy be tasty? Oh yes it can! Exercise contributes just 40% towards weight loss. The remaining 60% is your INPUT! Eat healthier. It’s so easy. • Begin with cleaning out your kitchen pantry and fridge. Toss all full fat items, whole milk dairy products, foods with partially hydrogenated oils or shortening, chips and other fatty snacks. • Refill your pantry and fridge with goodness. Fill your fridge with fresh fruits and veggies that YOU will cut and enjoy. Your pantry should be stocked with oatmeal (not instant), whole wheat cream of

wheat, whole grain cereals, unsalted/natural nuts and if you must have chips and cookies, opt for the low fat/low salt goodies with low saturated fat and zero trans fat. Be sure to purchase eggs with omega3’s, low fat or skim milk, cholesterol reducing butter spreads and tons of frozen veggies! • TOSS THE SALT. Enough said. • Use lots of spices. South Asian, Thai and Italian seasons are a super hit with everyday cooking. • Eat 6 times a day. That’s right, eat 6 meals a day. Begin at 7 AM, 10 AM, then 12 PM, 3 PM, 6 PM and at 9 PM. Your breakfast, lunch and dinners at 7, 12 and 6 will be a little heavier than the in between meals, but not by much. Your snack meals should include a fruit, protein and small carbohydrate. EAT UP!
Do Something BIG - VOLUNTEER! Americans spend so much time working and doing many other things, filling up their schedules. We’ve heard the saying “stop and smell the coffee or roses.” But why not make that coffee and clip the roses for someone else? YES - Volunteer! Here’s how to get started: • Explore your interests. Chances are, there is a non-profit groups that seeks your skills and talents. • Commit to volunteering at least 4 hours a month. Only 4 hours a month - that’s it. It’s almost a guarantee that you will volunteer more than 4 hours because your passion will grow! • Start your own charity. Have a passion for teddy bears? Coloring books? Helping Senior Citizens? You can do so much: hold a teddy bear drive and donate to the local Star of Hope chapter. Collect coloring books and donate them to a local children’s residential facility. If you have a strong desire to help Senior Citizens, gather magazines and donate them to their living quarters. • Read to children at the local library. There are many story times and pajama night reading times at the local library. Find out how you can put your dynamic, animated personality to use! • Love pets? Volunteer at your local Human Society, ASCPA or Citizens for Animal Protection! Speak for those who cannot speak for themselves (our sweet homeless animals)!

A SHOT AT LIFE
Tashrima Hossain, Cypress Falls Key Club Editor Santa hats top frowzy mops of hair throughout the building. Plates are stacked high with freshly cooked pancakes. The crisp winter air teems with the aura of hospitability. The Saturday sun still is still rising from its sleep, but the teenage volunteers are up and about, serving pancakes to those willing to service the 100 million women who are affected by maternal/neonatal tetanus (MNT) annually. It is the 2012 Eliminate Pancake Breakfast, and each family packed into the small Applebee’s restaurant is there for a good cause.

On December 8th, the Cypress Falls Key Club held its annual Applebee’s Eliminate Pancake Breakfast in order to eradicate maternal/ neonatal tetanus from 32 different countries. The student-led organization has spent much of its fall semester dedicated to raising money for The Eliminate Project, through the breakfast, car washes, trick-or-treating for UNICEF and bake sales. The club members welcomed the advent of the 2012 - 2013 academic year by setting a fundraising goal for The Eliminate Project. In order to raise awareness amidst the school, the officer Board decided to present videos about The Eliminate Project at general meetings. The members were touched by the young families’ hardships and became determined to make a change. Thanks to the owner of a local Applebee’s venue, the club compiled a majority of its fundraised earnings during the Eliminate Pancake Breakfast. Key Club volunteers spent weeks prior to the event selling tickets and spreading awareness. On the day of the event, the members served as waiters and advertisers; proceeds from the event were donated to The Eliminate Project.

The Eliminate Pancake Breakfast took the Key Club one step closer to its final fundraising objective. District Project Chair, Saksena, created and slowly filled a poster of a syringe to document growth toward the goals.
The Key Club has reached success for 730 mothers, their future children and their children’s future children. They’ve all been saved. The Santa hat-wearing, pancake stack-eating, early-rising group of volunteers has done its part in guaranteeing a shot at life for 100 million victims. With continued service to The Eliminate Project, maternal/neonatal tetanus will be eliminated from the world - one syringe at a time. If you’d like to make a donation to The Eliminate Project or just want to learn more about maternal/neonatal tetanus (MNT), feel free to contact President Gabi Bradshaw via e-mail at gabi.bradshaw.kc@gmail.com

Salute to Our Heroes has two purposes. First, to give tribute to our heroes - soldiers serving now, veterans and those who have been wounded or killed in action. We want to honor those who have served their country. The second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students. Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school, and the number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission.

Cypress Christian Previews Cy-Christian Learning Center Annual Dinner The Cypress Christian School Learning Center recently held its annual dinner and this year’s elementary and secondary families enjoyed an evening of great food, fun and fellowship! In addition, Joseph Ramsey, CCS senior, led everyone in song. Guests were encouraged by stories from seniors - Kaitlyn Miracle and Kameron Flory - regarding how the NILD/Discovery and Learning Center programs have helped them overcome their learning challenges and feel more self-confident. Parents of these students also remarked about the changes in their children and that their hope for their child’s academic future has been restored. “The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.” Vince Lombardi

Texas Christian School is Changing Acorns to Oaks “Changing Acorns to Oaks” is the theme at Texas Christian School this fall, as well as the title of their annual school wide play this past November. Families and community members enjoyed an eventful evening at the farm where Jr. High and High School students played key roles and students 2 years old – 12th grade sang songs. This fun filled evening will be remembered for years by the class of 2013 as they gave the audience quite a laugh in their roles. Academic, social and spiritual growth is a priority for the administration and staff of TCS. Plan to visit the campus at 6:30 PM for our Open House on February 21st and March 26th to learn more about what Texas Christian has to offer.

Luminaria Ceremony: At dark, the track is lined with candle-lit bags bearing the names of those who have been touched by or have lost their lives to cancer. Fight Back Ceremony: Before participants leave Relay, they make a personal commitment to help fight back against cancer in several ways. As interest in Relay for Life grew in the Houston area, the American Cancer Society began forming events in local communities and the first Cy-Fair Relay for Life committee was formed in 2004. This is our 9th year in Cy-Fair and our goal is to reach the $1 Million Dollar Mark. We are very close and only need $150,000 to meet our goal and with YOUR help, we can make this goal a reality!! 100% of our profits go to ACS to use for research and other programs. With more than 1,000 participants in last year’s Relay, we know that we can grow even bigger this year! “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through January. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Cornerstone United Methodist Church Wesley Covenant Service January 13, 2013 On Sunday, January 13th, during the 8:30 and 10:45 AM worship services as a part of the worship celebration, we will be including the Wesley Covenant Service from the United Methodist Book of Worship. The first usage of the Covenant Service by a meeting of Methodists was August 11, 1755. During the week before that event, Wesley had been encouraging the Society at Spitalfields to use the covenant as a “means of increasing serious religion which had been frequently practiced by our forefathers and attended with eminent blessing.” Several mornings before he actually introduced the liturgy, Wesley explained it again, talking about the manner of doing the covenant. Then on Friday, August 11th, Wesley “recited the tenor of the covenant proposed, in the words of that blessed man, Richard Alleine.” About 1800 people arose and gave testimony of their assent. “Such a night I scarce ever saw before. Surely the fruit of it shall remain forever.” Wesley’s motivation for using the service in 1755 came from two sources: (1) He had recently read Gillies’ Historical Collections which spoke of a solemn renewing of a covenant in Massachusetts in 1680 and (2) Richard Alleine (1611-81) whose influence had touched Wesley’s paternal grandparents and whose covenant had been used in Wesley’s family at Epworth. The use of this service proved so successful that it was used frequently, especially on New Year’s Day or the first Sunday in the New Year.

We would like to thank Kroger for donating 1500 paper bags, Masterpiece Litho, Inc. for their donation of 1,500 flyers and Doug and Donna Kurz of Kurz and Co. for generously contributing sponsorship. Again, thank you for your generous outpouring of support. The Cypress Belles appreciate Cole’s Crossing. JAZZERCISE COLLECTS FOR THE MINISTRIES, OPERATION INTERDEPENDANCE AND PINK RIBBONS PROJECT It’s a fact that exercise is important for good health. And it’s even better when that exercise helps others in the community. Jazzercise in the Bear Creek Copperfield area has collected food and new toys during the holiday season for the Cypress Assistance Ministries for over 30 years. This year, Bear Creek Copperfield Jazzercise Center along with the Northwest Jazzercise Center has also collected for Operation Interdependence with customers donating snack and personal items for our troops overseas. The Bear Creek Copperfield and Northwest Jazzercise customers, along with other locations, will help energize the crowd at the Rockets vs. Spurs game, when they perform a choreographed halftime routine at the Toyota Center on March 24, 2013.

They come from all walks of life - teachers, doctors, nurses, secretaries, business owners and parents. The driving force behind this performance - in addition to the excitement of performing in front of thousands of people at Toyota Center - is raising money to benefit The Pink Ribbons Project. In the past year, Jazzercise has raised $30,000 for the Pink Ribbons Project and over $330,000 over the past ten years to benefit this worthy cause. They are expected to raise thousands more in years to come. Pink Ribbons raises money for the National Alliance Cancer Organizations (NABCO), providing free mammograms for local women and an educational breast awareness program.
Honor Martin Luther King, Jr. with Service January 21, 2013 will mark the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday. This milestone is a perfect opportunity for Americans to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community. Why Serve on MLK Day of Service? Dr. King believed in a nation of freedom and justice for all and encouraged all citizens to live up to the purpose and potential of America by applying the principles of nonviolence to make this country a better place to live creating the Beloved Community. The MLK Day of Service is a way to transform Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and teachings into community action that helps solve social problems. That service may meet a tangible need or it may meet a need of the spirit. On this day, Americans of every age and background celebrate Dr. King through service projects that strengthen communities, empower individuals, bridge barriers and create solutions.
