We had a blast at our December Holiday Party and we marked the end of another successful year for our women’s club. We look forward to 2013 with enthusiasm. Happy New Year Everyone!! In January, we will meet for our first annual business meeting followed by a fun game of Bunco. In February, organization is the word. We hope to receive guidance that we can use in all aspects of our lives. CWC is a service organization that gives back to the community, so all funds raised will go right back to the community in scholarships for graduating high school seniors, at Lone Star College, Cy-Fair and grants to other non-profits in our community as well. Membership for the Cy-Fair Women’s Club is open to all ladies in Northwest Houston/Cypress neighborhoods. Currently we meet the first Thursday of most months at West Houston Church of Christ. Our meetings begin with social time and refreshments at 7:00 PM immediately followed by a program at 7:30 PM. The church is located at the corner of Queenston and West Road. Our monthly meetings are not only educational and enjoyable, but they develop lasting fellowships. We look forward to meeting you there! Please contact Susan McLeroy, Membership Chair at sudomac@comcast.net if you have any questions about our club or need directions to the church.

See Something, Say Something!!
As a reminder, it is critical to be able to recognize something that is out of the ordinary. Although many residents don’t know all their neighbors, they usually know a few. They also become familiar with patterns of living, like when people leave for work, the cars normally seen in a driveway, etc. It is these patterns that become what we consider “normal.” Whenever we see something that is not normal, it should warrant our attention. It may be a vehicle parked in a driveway or street, it may be someone walking on the street from house to house or it may even look like someone who is working on a project. If anything looks suspicious, call the Sheriff (713-221-6000). If someone knocks on your door, make certain you know who it is before you open the door, it if sounds out of the ordinary, call the Sheriff. If you, in any way, think something may be suspicious, call it in to the Sheriff (713221-6000)! The Crime Watch Committee also asks you to consider becoming involved in our Crime Watch program. You may contact your village representative listed on the Copperfield website, in the Copperfield newsletter or visit one of our monthly committee meetings (Second Wednesday of each month at the Copperfield Community Center at 6:30 PM). In order to receive updates, you may register at the Copperfield website at: www.copperfield.org/sl_register.php to stay informed and receive crime watch updates. Please continue to call in any and all suspicious activity you observe at any time, to the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number at 713-2216000 (Option 1 for dispatch). For life threatening emergencies, call 911.
Copperfield Place Village (CPV) A WORD FROM THE BOARD
The board hopes that by now all homeowners had a Merry Christmas and Happy New year! We hope that the New Year brings us all prosperity, good health and goodwill. The drive through for the Christmas home decorations was held and 3 homes were selected as 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. Many of the homeowners had beautiful decorations and the selection was not easy. We still thank all homeowners who displayed their home beautifully with Christmas joy this year. A reminder that all Christmas decorations must be removed by the end of January.

(CPV) DEED RESTRICTIONS PARKING & DEED RESTRICTION VIOLATIONS
It is allowable to park your vehicle in the street; however, DO NOT park it in such a way that emergency vehicles cannot drive through or block wheel chair accessibility! Fire trucks are not able to get through when vehicles are parked on BOTH sides of the street and it becomes too narrow. Some homeowners are parking at the end of the cul-de-sacs and not allowing people access to get their mail. These vehicles can and will be towed in an emergency at the homeowner’s expense. VEHICLES ARE REPORTED BEING PARKED IN THE POOL/PARKING AREA AFTER HOURS. TOWING WILL ALSO BE AT THE OWNERS’ EXPENSE. APPROVALS FOR MODIFICATIONS/ADDITIONS/CHANGES
Copperfield
REMINDER THAT NO CHANGES CAN BE MADE WITHOUT PRIOR APPROVAL FROM THE ACC COMMITTEE! FORMS NEED TO BE FILLED OUT AND SUBMITTED FOR PRIOR APPROVAL. Roofing, painting, landscaping or any major changes must be approved by the Architectural Review Board. If you are not sure of the deed restrictions or what colors are allowable under the current deed restrictions, please contact SCS Management at 281-463-1777. Many homes are in desperate need of painting or mildew cleaning! Any modification of the front yard etc. that is out of the ordinary should be approved before landscaping with the Architectural Board Committee at SCS. Please trim ALL bushes, trees, shrubs that are planted in the cross corner lots / section of the street! These must be kept trimmed and maintained for good / safe view of incoming traffic at all times! SCS will be looking closely at all intersections during their drive through to insure that this is in compliance with the deed restrictions. There has been reported instances where palms, trees or large shrubbery is overgrown and not providing a safe view of the cross intersection. You may obtain your form for Architectural Board approval by visiting the Copperfield website at www.copperfield.org or contact SCS.
(CPV) TRASH & LIMBS
Wca’s contract has been awarded again and extended for another year. Curbside pickup will remain approximately at the same rate as last year. New pick up days will be posted by february 2013. Please do not put garbage out on the curb sooner than the evening before the scheduled pick up date. Trash limbs must be bundled and tied not to exceed 4 ft. lengths or the garbage people will not pick them up!

Easton Commons Village (EC) Change in Trash Service
There will be a change in Trash Service effective February 1, 2013. WCA will continue to serve the community. The pick-up days have changed. Pick-up will now be on Tuesdays and Fridays. Recycling will tentatively be on Fridays. Any changes in the recycling days will be reported to the residents as they become known. Easton Commons will continue to use the 18-gallon recycling bins that we currently use.
If you have received a letter from SCS regarding a Deed Restriction violation, please take care of the violation as soon as possible. If you are having problems getting an issue resolved, please contact SCS Management to inform them and to schedule a timeline for the correction. If you ignore the letter, additional letters are sent out which can result in additional expenses, which will be added to your account. If you are not sure of the Deed Restrictions, you can access them on www. copperfield.org under Easton Commons.
(EC) Email Listing
The Easton Commons Homeowners Association is putting together an email database of the residents in order to keep as many people informed of community happenings as possible. This list will be used strictly for the purpose of communicating with Easton Commons residents and will not be forwarded to a third party nor used for any other than the stated purpose. You may also use this means to ask questions, make suggestions or present complaints about the community. So far, this has been a really effective means of updating the village on things that will be taking place. It would be even better if there were more of the residents that could be contacted in this way. If you are not on the list and would like to be or have a neighbor who is not on the list, remember an email to easton.commons@yahoo.com will ensure that you are put on the list.
(EC) Crime Watch
We still need block captains. please contact Ken Johnson at admin@ eccrimewatch.com if you are interested.
(EC) Trucks Prohibited
There are still incidences of large commercial trucks parking along the street near the entrance to the subdivision and adjacent to the park. The entrance to a residential neighborhood is no place for such vehicles, which are a safety problem, as well as unsightly and may interfere with traffic. Signs are posted that indicate that the parking of these vehicles is prohibited. When a truck parks in the restricted area, residents are encouraged to call the Harris County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number (713-221-6000) to make a report.
(EC) HOME IMPROVEMENTS
To make changes to the exterior appearance of your home (i.e. painting, new windows, new roof, new fence, etc.) an ARC Application must be filled out and sent to SCS Management. All exterior changes must be approved via an ARC Application. A copy of this form can be found at www.copperfield.org under Easton Commons. Until the Architectural Review Committee is filled, the applications will be reviewed by the HOA Board of Directors.
If you would like to receive Crime Watch information, contact Ken at the email address shown above and he will provide information as it becomes available.
(EC) Deed Restrictions
Every month SCS Management rides through Easton Commons to check for Deed Restriction violations. The Deed Restrictions set the standard on how our property is taken care of. A well maintained community will impact the property value of your home, which is most likely the largest investment you have.

The Board voted to add recycling to the upcoming trash contract starting in February with the lidded and wheeled 48-gallon container. Homeowners will be contacted by Waste Corporation of America (WCA) with the information pertaining to the day and acceptable items between now and February. The days of trash collection will also return to Tuesday and Friday, as they were before. You should be receiving information from WCA as to when these changes are to begin.

Information is regularly being added to the page. please email wendy.williamson@sbcglobal.net if you have information that you think may be of interest to other Northmead residents. Additionally, if you think that your information may be appropriate to include in this newsletter, please send it as well.
Southcreek Village (SC) Holiday Decorating Contests
Thanks to everyone who participated in our two Holiday Decorating Contests: both the Individual House Contest and the Street Decorating Contest. Our neighborhood definitely had the Holiday Spirit during the month of December. Please check the marquees for the winner of the Street Decorating Contest. See next month’s newsletter and the copperfield.org website for all the contest winners.
(NM) Recycling is Back
(SC) Trash Pickup
Beginning February 1st, Garbage pick-up days will change and recycling will be added to the service. The good news is that your garbage fees will decrease although recycling service is added. The new garbage collection days will be Tuesday for garbage and Friday for garbage and recycling. You will receive more information about this by mail in late January.
In Southcreek, our trash is picked up on Tuesdays and Fridays. Southcreek has backdoor pickup. This means that our trashcans may be placed at the back of our driveway. We do not have to have our trashcans at the curb.
(NM) Reminders
Our deed restrictions state that all trash, including grass clippings cannot be on the curb until 6 pm the night before pickup and your trashcans must be picked up from the curb by 6 pm the day of pickup. So… you cannot have trash on the curb until Monday and Thursday nights until 6 pm and everything must be removed from the curb by 6 pm on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Garage Sales are not permitted in Copperfield Northmead. Two times a year, our community holds a neighborhood sale that is well publicized. You will receive notice when these garage sales are planned. Garbage cans must be stored out of sight. Garbage cans may be placed on the curb the evening before collection day and must be removed the evening of the collection day. Honoring these deed restrictions contributes greatly to the beautification of your neighborhood.

Fourth of July parade
Each year, Southcreek residents are able to attend our annual Fourth of July parade. This includes a parade from the Autumn Laurel Park to the Park Falls Park. Once the parade reaches the Park Falls Park, residents are able to have refreshments and play on inflatables. This is one of our largest social events of the year. In order for the event to take place, a lot of planning and hard work must be done between now and the Fourth of July. Please contact Ann Liner at Bryne123@aol.com if you would be interested in working on the planning for the Fourth of July parade.

Southdown Village (SD) Crime Watch
Solicitors. Please do not engage door-to-door solicitors under any circumstances. If they approach you or ring your door bell, simply tell them you are not interested and tell them to leave now. In many cases, door-todoor solicitors are felons from other states. When you open your door to talk to them, they can see what you have in your home. They want to see if you have a flat screen, did the alarm chime when you opened the door or if you have a dog. Do not open your door after dark to people you do not know. A Southdown neighbor opened the door to a solicitor after dark last summer. That neighbor’s home was burglarized a few months later. A coincidence? Maybe. Why take the chance??? When you are approached by door-to-door solicitors, call the sheriff’s non-emergency number 713-2216000 (option 1) and report the solicitor. The deputies will investigate and take appropriate action. Tell the dispatcher you are making a “non-contact” call and the deputies will not come to your home. Southdown is no-solicitation neighborhood. The solicitors referred to here are not our neighborhood students who sell items to support local or school-sponsored fundraisers. Southdown Parks. The parks located in Southdown Village are not public facilities. Homeowners own and maintain these parks. If you see people at the parks that you believe may not be residents, please call the sheriff’s nonemergency number. If they live here fine, if not, they will be asked to leave immediately. Signs have been prominently posted advising that these parks are private property. The deputies have been asked step up patrols of our parks. Suspicious Persons. Most of the home burglaries in Southdown Village occur between the hours of 8:00 am and 12:00 noon. By now, many of the residents in Southdown have lived on their streets long enough to know some of the habits of their neighbors. For instance, you know if your neighbor works and probably what time they leave in the morning. If you see a strange
12
car or person at your neighbor’s house, call the sheriff’s non-emergency number and report it. If the person is supposed to be there, great. If not, you may have stopped a home burglary. If you see someone loading up a vehicle with items from your neighbor’s home, please call 911. The burglars in the area know that Southdown residents mind their own business and probably won’t call if they see something strange. In 2013, let’s prove them wrong. If you call the sheriff enough times, the burglars will move on to other neighborhoods. Consider etching your valuables with your house number and first two initials. You can use the sharp end of a knife or anything that will make an etching. “7402-ED” marks the item without giving the thieves your driver’s license number, social security number or other personal information. While this may not stop your item from being sold, many pawn shops will not take an item that has an identification number. Finally, if you see something suspicious (suspicious is defined as that small inner voice that tells you something is wrong), please immediately call the non-emergency number 713-221-6000 (option 1) or 911, if necessary. Working together, we can continue to keep Southdown Village safe. Register your name at http://www.copperfield.org/sl_register.php for updates on crime and community activities.

(SD) Start the New Year Right
We’ve embarked on a bright new year so why not start it off right by incorporating a few new healthy habits into your life? There’s no need to revamp your entire diet and lifestyle to improve your health - even small actions can pay off in a big boost to your health. Check out the ideas below and try the ones that sound right for you. Get your full eight hours. Just as a healthy diet and regular exercise are necessary and important for good health, so is sleep. Cutting back on snooze-time can lead to an out-of-control appetite (some studies show that people who sleep less are more likely to be overweight), a greater risk for coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes. So try and get the recommended eight hours of sleep needed for good health, safety and optimum performance. Rise and shine - and eat. Breakfast gets your body’s metabolism going again after a night of sleeping and gives you the gradual and adequate energy you need to get through the morning. You don’t have to eat snacks to supplement your energy needs and expenditure. It doesn’t have to be complicated too. Microwave instant oatmeal, topping it with skim milk or yogurt and berries; in minutes, you’ll enjoy filling fiber with a protein and vitamin boost. Hard-boiled eggs, whole-grain toast with almond butter or a fruit and yogurt smoothie are also quick, nutritious choices. Wash your hands. From banishing cold and flu germs to preventing food borne illnesses, frequent hand-washing is one of the smartest preventive habits you can adopt. Wash your hands with warm water and soap before handling food, eating or touching your face and after using the bathroom or coming into contact with potentially contaminated objects such as doorknobs, toys and menus. Be sure to clean the entire surface of your palms and the tops of your hands, as well as under your nails. A thorough hand-washing should take about 20 seconds.

Know your family health history. Your family’s medical history can give you important information about your own health. Many diseases, such as heart disease, breast cancer, diabetes and depression, can have a genetic component. The more you know about the health of your relatives, the better informed you’ll be about your own risk factors and how to manage them. Eat mindfully. One of the significant differences between people who successfully manage their weight and people who constantly struggle is mindful eating. Turn off the TV or computer, sit down at a table with your food on a plate and focus on eating. Savor the smell and enjoy the taste. Put your fork down between bites and take time to really enjoy your meal. Chances are you will eat less and feel more satisfied.
CONSTRUCTION We Specialize in
Add variety to your diet. Wild salmon and sardines are just a couple of the fish that provide heart-healthy fats such as omega-3, which lower your risk of cardiovascular disease and help preserve your cognitive function. Aim for two servings a week; more than that may add too much mercury to your system. On occasion, indulge in a glass of red wine (or any alcoholic beverage) or a bite of dark chocolate that contains at least 75% cocoa-both contain antioxidants that can benefit your heart. In addition, both may relax blood vessels, which reduces clotting somewhat and makes it easier for blood to get to the heart. And finally, try to eat 5-7 servings a day of fruits and vegetables and minimize your intake of carbohydrates.

Volunteer. In addition to helping others, volunteers themselves often benefit from “giving back” to the communities in which they live and work and enjoy a rewarding sense of doing something good for someone else. As a volunteer, you gain valuable experience, learn new skills, make friends and meet others who share the same interests.

Maintain strong family and social networks. Research has shown that people who have family and friends they can turn to for support and companionship may be healthier and less likely to experience depression than those who spend most of their time alone. Looking for new friends? Join a club, take a class or volunteer.

Take a time out. At least once a day, close your eyes and focus on taking 10 deep, full breaths. Inhale through your nose, feel your diaphragm expand and exhale through your mouth. Deep, focused breathing slows your heart rate, calms the body and as a result, calms your mind and reduces stress. Mix in at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity at least five days a week as well. Choose something you enjoy and will stick to. Recent studies found that brisk walking is just as good for your heart as jogging or try biking or swimming. You needn’t do it all at once; two 15-minute workouts or three 10-minutes blocks work equally well.
Peach Coffee Cake Cake: • 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar • 1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 3/4 cup skim milk • 2 tablespoons canola oil • 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla • 1/4 cup egg substitute • 1 1/2 cup peeled fresh peaches, chopped
Drink more water to prevent constipation, dehydration and other related diseases. Whether you drink bottled, filtered or tap, water helps keep your cells hydrated, flushes out toxins and prevents dehydration. Tea, juices and sports drinks count, too, but watch out for added sugar, artificial flavorings and caffeine, all of which can detract from the benefits.
Topping: • 1/4 cup sugar • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Congratulations to the Young and Vogt families, last month’s Southdown Yard of the Month winners. The Youngs live at 7718 Shady Palms and the Vogts are at 7202 Starbridge. Each family was awarded a $25 gift card to an area home improvement store. It is great to see such pride in our neighborhood, especially after such a rough summer. Reminder: be sure to let Graham Management know if you see a yard that deserves consideration for Yard of the Month.
(SD) Architectural Review Committee/Deed Restrictions
Please review the guidelines and submit an ARC application before beginning modifications to the exterior of your home. The ARC’s role is to ensure high standards continue to be met on all visible improvements and will be happy to assist any homeowners with questions on proposed improvements.

If you have trees that did not survive the drought, please consider replacing them. Contact a reputable tree company for replacement advice and remember to consult the ARC to ensure that your tree is in compliance with the deed restrictions. Look for further information about trees in future Southdown articles.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through January. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

We do ask that everyone add the following to your list of 2013 resolutions to make this the best year possible for our community: • Be extra vigilant throughout the year but especially in January because trends indicate a rise in crime during this month. • Keep doors, windows, garages and vehicles locked at all times. • Do not leave valuables - purses, cell phones, briefcases, computers, navigation devices - in vehicles. • Park vehicles in garage or driveway, not on the street, to help with traffic flow and to keep our kids safe. • Record the serial numbers on electronics, bikes, lawn equipment & tools. Etch name and address on items targeted by thieves. Take photos of these items and jewelry. This can help with the recovery of stolen items brought to pawn shops. • When you see something suspicious, say something. Report all suspicious activities and vehicles. When possible, write down license plate numbers. Program the non-emergency Sheriff Dept. number, 713-221-6000 #1, in the cell phones of all family members. • Remember to keep your vehicle speed within the speed limit and to always come to a complete stop at stop signs. There is a zero tolerance policy for those who do not follow the traffic laws. • Please consider joining our committee, which meets once a month for approximately an hour to discuss various ways to make our neighborhood a safe place to live. Anyone interested in signing up to be a block captain notify Larry Berger at Larry.Berger@SUG.com for details.

(WC) JANUARY GARDENING TIPS
Please remember to take down and store any outdoor holiday lighting and decorations now that the holiday season has passed. The idea of possibly having a Westcreek “Best Lighted” home or street similar to Yard of the Month is being considered for the next holiday season. More work on this concept is required, with information to follow later in the year. LAWN/GARDEN CARE Reminder, we will begin to experience colder overnight temperatures this month, so be prepared! If you have tropical plants or specimens that are sensitive to temperatures near or below freezing, they will require special attention if you intend to enjoy their presence come next spring and summer. • The coldest months for our area are January and February. Obtain or create frost covers or sheets (made of fabric, NOT plastic). • Have the covers readily available to avoid delays if coverage is needed. The very cold weather usually roars in with little warning. • Many of us experienced damage to our irrigation systems in recent years when temperatures fell below freezing. If you can turn off the water supply when sub-freezing temperatures threaten without having to interrupt supply to your entire home that may be more beneficial as adequate irrigation this time of year can usually be performed manually only once or twice weekly.
Whatever you do outdoors, always exercise caution, be safe, use the right tool for the job and protect your eyes, hands and other body parts accordingly.

The ability to see rather unsightly growth remnants due to the season that begs to be cut back or pruned will be more obvious now than at any other time. But hold on! Pruning promotes growth, especially if we experience warm days in January that could ultimately cause damage if the temperatures then turn cold again, which they undoubtedly will. Keep in mind the following; • If a cold snap hits the area, all that fresh growth the pruning promoted will be damaged, stunting the health and performance of the specimen when spring finally does arrive. • Leaving dead wood on other plant specimens actually provides protection during cold times as it acts as an insulating barrier to the cold. • The ideal time to begin pruning is in mid to late February. Early to midFebruary for Crape Myrtles, Oaks and Azaleas is the ideal time. Heavy pruning on Roses is also best next month, not in January. • Mow your lawn height to a shorter level and perform de-thatching to remove dead grass now. This will promote new growth once temperatures rise in the spring and will also allow fertilizers to reach root systems easier when applied. This will also increase the appearance of your lawn as there will be less yellow and more green color for the eye to detect. • Now is the perfect time to have your gutters cleared of excessive leaves and acorns before heavy rains return in the spring, preventing drainage issues. • If you are aware of any sidewalk areas or busted curbs that are damaged or cracked around sewer access covers or storm drains the county can perform the repair if they are aware of the damage. Please contact Graham Management with the location and they will inform the landscape committee of the issue.

Welcome to a New Year! Now that 2013 is upon us, we must plan accordingly and be prepared to provide pest control, proper feedings, pruning and planting schedules to our home gardens and lawns, all of which are of importance and add beauty and value to Westcreek. If you haven’t started a feeding calendar or outdoor care schedule or have not transferred previous schedules to this years’ calendar, then now would be a good time to do so.

Please keeps your cats indoors
While dogs are required to be on a leash while walking, cats are free to roam the neighborhoods, which can create problems. They are able to rip open trash bags and all too frequently kill birds. So please, if you have a cat as a house pet, keep it indoors where it belongs. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• End of Subdivision News •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Copperfield Coalition A Non-Profit Incorporated Organization
Medians on FM 529 The Coalition met with TXDOT officials on December 4th to discuss the FM 529 project. A little behind schedule, the construction/modification of medians on FM 529 commenced mid-December. TXDOT has made a few more changes to their plans. They have informed us that any median less than 10 feet wide would receive pavers (earth-tone colored brick inserts) rather than being green. They are concerned for the safety of any maintenance or landscaping crews that would be maintaining said medians. They feel that anything less than 10 feet wide would endanger the lives of the workers due to the close proximity to high-speed vehicles. Any and all medians beyond 10 feet will be green. TXDOT will also be installing sleeves to the medians, which would allow for future irrigation and landscaping if desired by the communities or the businesses around them. Hearthstone has agreed to landscape the medians from Horsepen Creek to SH6. In the future, the Coalition will attempt to solicit other communities and businesses on FM 529 to do the same. Prostitution and Human Trafficking The Coalition met with Sheriff Garcia and his command staff. This was a follow-up from the September 18th Town Hall. One of the topics we discussed

was the massage parlors and the new regulations concerning them. The new regulations were passed in Commissioner’s Court on Tuesday, October 9, 2012. These were the new SOB (Sexually Oriented Business) Regulations crafted by Pct. 4 Commissioner Jack Cagle’s and Constable Ron Hickman’s Task Force. This will also impact and help control, Human Trafficking in Harris County. The new regulations allowed for a 90-day grace period, which will be up on or around January 9, 2013. We discussed the possibility of Sheriff Garcia borrowing manpower from all his different divisions to aid in a mass enforcement of the new regulations the day the 90-day grace period is up. His response was in favor of doing just that. We had reported that the massage parlor located on FM 529, directly across the street from Kroger, next to Apple Dental was shut down shortly after our Town Hall Meeting. Unfortunately, we have discovered that this massage parlor, which is extremely close to Langham Creek High School, is back up and running again. It is advertising once again on Backpage.com under the services of Escorts and Body Rubs. The Coalition will emphasize its concerns that this and all other illegal establishments in, around and nearby our area are dealt with the resolve to have them shut down permanently. We must send a clear and decisive message to these organizations that they are not welcome in our community and will not be tolerated. Crime, Security and Safety If You See Something, Say Something! “If you see something, say something” is the slogan of Homeland Security. Harris County has also adopted this motto, if you see something, say something no matter how insignificant you may think it is. If you are the slightest bit suspicious, call the Harris County non-emergency number and report it. If it is life threatening or an emergency, of course, dial 911. The deputies would rather show up to find out it is nothing than show up later after a crime has been committed and it is too late. Let’s all take a pro-active stance. Let’s stop crime before it starts. Make a call! Non-emergency number: 713-221-6000.

second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students. Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school, and the number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission. The inaugural event honors Jersey Village High School graduate 1st Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, who was killed December 20, 2007 while serving his country in Iraq. A CFEF endowment was established in Jeremy’s memory by an anonymous donor. Last year the 1st Lieutenant Jeremy Ray Community Service and Peace Award was presented to Klein Funeral Homes & Memorials. Following tradition, the event will have the Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony. The table will have empty table settings with chairs leaning up against the table as though saved for someone. The table settings have a single red rose displayed in a vase in reminder of the bloodshed for our country and the vase was tied with a red ribbon - a symbol of the continued pledge to shed blood for our country. A slice of lemon on the bread plate is a reminder of the bitterness of the loss of comrades in arms; a bowl of salt to symbolize the tears shed by family members of lost loved ones and glasses turned upside down indicate no one will sit there. Last year’s ceremony was performed by the 75th Army Division Honor Guard and was proceeded by Taps performed by William Veenstra, Cy-Fair High School Senior. For more information on the 2013 event, please contact Marie Holmes at marie@thecfef.org or 281-807-3591.

The crisp winter air teems with the aura of hospitability. The Saturday sun still is still rising from its sleep, but the teenage volunteers are up and about, serving pancakes to those willing to service the 100 million women who are affected by maternal/neonatal tetanus (MNT) annually. It is the 2012 Eliminate Pancake Breakfast, and each family packed into the small Applebee’s restaurant is there for a good cause.

On December 8th, the Cypress Falls Key Club held its annual Applebee’s Eliminate Pancake Breakfast in order to eradicate maternal/neonatal tetanus from 32 different countries. The studentled organization has spent much of its fall semester dedicated to raising money for The Eliminate Project, through the breakfast, car washes, trick-or-treating for UNICEF and bake sales. The club members welcomed the advent of the 2012 - 2013 academic year by setting a fundraising goal for The Eliminate Project. In order to raise awareness amidst the school, the officer Board decided to present videos about The Eliminate Project at general meetings. The members were touched by the young families’ hardships and became determined to make a change. Thanks to the owner of a local Applebee’s venue, the club compiled a majority of its fundraised earnings during the Eliminate Pancake Breakfast. Key Club volunteers spent weeks prior to the event selling tickets and spreading awareness. On the day of the event, the members served as waiters and advertisers; proceeds from the event were donated to The Eliminate Project. The Eliminate Pancake Breakfast took the Key Club one step closer to its final fundraising objective. District Project Chair, Saksena, created and slowly filled a poster of a syringe to document growth toward the goals.

With all of the money raised from the fall semester, the Key Club has filled the syringe and achieved its goal. Through its efforts, it has raised $1,311 and in turn, saved 730 lives. The Key Club has reached success for 730 mothers, their future children and their children’s future children. They’ve all been saved. The Santa hatwearing, pancake stack-eating, early-rising group of volunteers has done its part in guaranteeing a shot at life for 100 million victims. With continued service to The Eliminate Project, maternal/neonatal tetanus will be eliminated from the world - one syringe at a time. If you’d like to make a donation to The Eliminate Project or just want to learn more about maternal/neonatal tetanus (MNT), feel free to contact President Gabi Bradshaw via e-mail at gabi.bradshaw.kc@gmail.com

LCHS CHEER
The Langham Creek Cheer Squad would like to congratulate the Mighty Lobo football team for being District Champs! It was a fun and exciting season and the squad was honored to be part of it all! On November 15th, the cheerleaders served Thanksgiving dinner to the residents of Grace Care Center. It was a wonderful act of kindness and service that was beneficial for all in attendance. Thank you girls for being active in your community for the good of others. The Lobo cheerleaders had some great “nature” time on November 18th with family and friends at their annual hayride. On a beautiful, crisp night, they roasted hot dogs and made smores over a camp fire, played games and enjoyed each others company away from the lights and complications of the city. A well deserved respite for our hard working girls! On December 2nd, the cheerleaders donned their Santa hats and holiday garb, hopped on a beautifully lit float complete with music and a snow blowing snowman and rolled down Highway 6 in the annual Parade of Lights. Once again, our girls served as beautiful ambassadors of Langham Creek High School in a fun community event benefiting the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department. In the midst of everything already mentioned, the squad has been intensely practicing for and performing in competitions and supporting the Lobo basketball teams courtside! Go Lobos!

Scouts GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL Copper Corners Service Unit
Girl Scouts in the Copper Corners Service Unit are looking forward to lots of activities in 2013! January always begins with the annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale. Girls will be selling those delicious cookies starting January 5th, so plan to order plenty of your old favorites! A new cookie this year is the Mango Crème, a crunchy vanilla and coconut cookie with a mango-flavored crème filling. Be sure to give them a try! Selling Girl Scout cookies helps girls to develop business and organizational skills and provides funds for individual troops and San Jacinto Council. Cookie money helps to maintain and equip our great camps and buys things like bows and arrows, canoes, feed for the horses and much more. When you purchase Girl Scout Cookies, you are helping to provide special programs and opportunities for our local Girl Scouts. We appreciate the support of our friends and neighbors! If we missed visiting your house, look for cookie booths at area businesses between February 15th and March 24th!

h e r i t a g e t e x a s . c o m Girl Scout leaders and their daughters are looking forward to Leader/Daughter weekend January 11th-13th. We’ll be gathering in the Hill Country for an incredible weekend. This is an opportunity for leader moms and their daughters to enjoy time together. Crafts, a campfire sing-along and great food (Dutch oven cobbler… mom!) are some of the things we always look forward to at camp. . We make new friends and have time to relax and visit with old ones. We might be climbing a rock wall, participating in a trail ride or performing in the talent show, but we always have a great time and bring back wonderful memories!

Troop 16150, a new kindergarten Daisy troop, has already started to create Girl Scout memories. The girls welcomed parents, family and friends to their investiture ceremony and celebrated with a party. They had learned and recited the Girl Scout promise and sang Girl Scout songs for their guests. They loved showing off their new Girl Scout pins and the promise circle that they earned at their very first troop meeting. You can see the beautiful cake from their celebration, along with troop photos. Other activities in the planning stages are Daisy Day, Brownie Day and an event for older girls. Rumor has it that information on the service unit “Me and My Guy “event will be coming out at the next service unit meeting. Girl Scouting is open to all girls between the ages of 5 (must be in kindergarten) and 18, who are willing to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. PACK 445 OUT OF FIEST ELEMENTARY
Welcome to the New Year’s edition of “The Chronicles of Pack 445.”
Pack 445 had a wonderful and eventful end to the year 2012. Once again, we joined the fun and participated in the annual Parade of Lights. The Scouts truly love decorating our floats and put a lot of time, pride and hard work into it. While the boys didn’t have to bundle up in their best winter clothes this year, it was still a very festive celebration. The boys also had their annual Pushmobile Races last month. Pushmobile is where one Scout sits in a homemade car and steers, while another Scout pushes from behind. A lot of hard work and preparation go into this event, but it is well worth it as the boys always have a great time! The New Year will bring Pack 445 a lot of fun and a lot of activities. Next month will be our annual Blue and Gold Celebration, which is sure to provide a great for the Pack families. Pack 445 hopes that you and your family had a wonderful holiday and an even better New Year. We would love for your son to spend this new year with us. If you have a boy in the first to fifth grade in the Copperfield area and would like to join our family, please see our website at http://groups.yahoo. com/group/cubpack445houston/

Cornerstone United Methodist Church Wesley Covenant Service January 13, 2013
On Sunday, January 13th, during the 8:30 and 10:45 AM worship services as a part of the worship celebration, we will be including the Wesley Covenant Service from the United Methodist Book of Worship. The first usage of the Covenant Service by a meeting of Methodists was August 11, 1755. During the week before that event, Wesley had been encouraging the Society at Spitalfields to use the covenant as a “means of increasing serious religion which had been frequently practiced by our forefathers and attended with eminent blessing.” Several mornings before he actually introduced the liturgy, Wesley explained it again, talking about the manner of doing the covenant. Then on Friday, August 11th, Wesley “recited the tenor of the covenant proposed, in the words of that blessed man, Richard Alleine.” About 1800 people arose and gave testimony of their assent. “Such a night I scarce ever saw before. Surely the fruit of it shall remain forever.” Wesley’s motivation for using the service in 1755 came from two sources: (1) He had recently read Gillies’ Historical Collections which spoke of a solemn renewing of a covenant in Massachusetts in 1680 and (2) Richard Alleine (1611-81) whose influence had touched Wesley’s paternal grandparents and whose covenant had been used in Wesley’s family at Epworth. The use of this service proved so successful that it was used frequently, especially on New Year’s Day or the first Sunday in the New Year. Mark your calendars and make plans to join us for this special service.

Adopt A US Soldier
Adopt A US Soldier is a non-profit organization that seeks volunteers and donors to help show the brave men and women fighting for our freedom that their sacrifices will not go unnoticed. It connects supportive civilians with deployed soldiers and offers a channel by which to communicate encouragement and express gratitude to those serving in the United States Armed Forces. Adopt A US Soldier is sustained by its volunteer workforce located across the United States. After a supporter asked a soldier what they needed, his response was as follows: “No requests, just don’t want to be forgotten.” -LCPL O.J.T. III When registering for Adopt A US Soldier your involvement can range from writing letters and sending postcards, to mailing care packages full of items a soldier may need or want. Handwritten letters are most important and meaningful to soldiers. Adopt A US Soldier encourages civilians to adopt a soldier to show your support for those that are making sacrifices for our country. If interested, please go to www.adoptaussoldier.org to register.

Visit our website at www. crossroads-volunteers.org and consider running an ad like the one below in your Copperfield subdivision newsletter. HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.”
Weekday classes begin Jan. 14! Weekend College begins Jan. 18!
While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. LSC-CyFair 9191 Barker Cypress Cypress, TX 77433 LSC-Fairbanks Center 14955 Northwest Freeway Houston, TX 77040

Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

Pet Hotline News
Too many pets are getting out without any form of ID and collars. The shelters are filled up and will euthanize within 24 hrs. This happened to someone’s pet in Deerfield. Please put a collar and phone # on your pet. I will be happy to call the owner if you find a pet and let them know that it should have been kept in a safe environment. I do know that there are circumstances whereby a gate is ajar or a utility person leaves it open after checking the meter and that pet gets out. You can reach the county website at www.countypets.com and their phone number is 713-999-3191. Remember thunder and fireworks are reasons why dogs bolt from their yards. Help keep them safe.

HOLIDAY RECYCLING!
If everyone wrapped just three gifts in reused paper, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields. If every household reused just two feet of ribbon each year, the resulting 38,000 miles or ribbon could tie a bow around the Earth. 28 billon pounds of edible food is thrown away each year - serve smaller portions; diners can always ask for seconds. The 2.65 billion Christmas cards sold each year in the U.S. could fill a football field 10 stories high or circle the planet 10 times. Annual trash from gift-wrap and shopping bags total 4 million tons. Think about how you can reduce and help our environment. • LIGHTS: HolidayLeds.com will recycle your old incandescent lights and in return send you a coupon for 25% off any purchase of LED Christmas lights from their web site. The program is open all year round and recycled over 10,000 pounds of old lights in 2009 - 2010. See the website for shipping information. • PACKAGING: Cardboard boxes, gift-wrap, gift bags, ribbons and stick-on bows can be kept and re-used again. Don’t know what to do with those pesky foam-packaging peanuts? Many UPS Store locations accept them for reuse. Check with your local UPS Store for additional details (www.theupsstore.com). • CHRISTMAS TREE: As lights flicker out on another holiday season, many recycle their Christmas trees through community projects that chip the evergreens into garden mulch. Contact your county to find the nearest drop-off location to pick up dates. Harris County 281-8555600. Fort Bend County 281-342-6171. • UNWANTED GIFTS: Unwanted gifts can be donated to your local charities or churches. • CHRISTMAS CARDS: A traditional activity, but one which never fails to amuse the kids, is making gift tags for next year’s presents. Use pinking sheers, a hole punch and leftover ribbon. Also, local preschools and daycares often appreciate free items for arts and crafts. • CELL PHONES AND BATTERIES: Numerous retail locations will accept your old cell phones and batteries. Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy and several more. Go to www.epa.gov/epawaste/conserve/ materials/ecycling/donate.htm to find your local listings.

• When purchasing a space heater, make sure that it is approved by a certified testing organization. • Read the manual that came with your space heater before using it. • Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that might be flammable such as furniture, draperies or curtains, bedding, rugs or clothing. • Keep space heaters away from areas where water may come in contact with the heater. • If you intend to use a space heater in the bathroom, check the manual before purchasing to make sure it is safe to use in areas where there is water. • Keep children away from space heaters. Never leave a child unattended in a room where there is a space heater. • Don’t plug a space heater into an extension cord. If you have to use an extension cord, check the manufacturer’s recommendations on the cord and make sure that it is the proper wire gauge size and type. • Don’t use space heaters in areas where flammable liquids such as gasoline or kerosene are used or stored. Space heaters have hot parts that can cause sparking and start a fire. • Never use a space heater to warm bedding, dry clothes, cook food or thaw pipes. • When you’re not using a space heater, turn it off and unplug it. • Turn off and unplug all space heaters before going to bed.
