DRYER SAFETY TIPS

Each year, on average, clogged clothes dryer vents cause over 12,500 house fires, 15 deaths and 400 injuries. • Clean the dryer vent and exhaust duct periodically. Check the outside dryer vent while the dryer is operating to make sure exhaust air is escaping. If it is not, the vent or the exhaust duct may be blocked. To remove a blockage in the exhaust path, it may be necessary to disconnect the exhaust duct from the dryer. Remember to reconnect the ducting to the dryer and outside vent before using the dryer again. • Clean behind the dryer, where lint can build up. Have a qualified service person clean the interior of the dryer chassis periodically to minimize the amount of lint accumulation. Keep the area around the dryer clean and free of clutter. • Replace plastic or foil, accordion-type ducting material with rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal duct. Most manufacturers specify the use of a rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal duct, which provides maximum airflow. The flexible plastic or foil type duct can more easily trap lint and is more susceptible to kinks or crushing, which can greatly reduce the airflow. • Take special care when drying clothes that have been soiled with volatile chemicals such as gasoline, cooking oils, cleaning agents or finishing oils and stains. If possible, wash the clothing more than once to minimize the amount of volatile chemicals on the clothes and preferably, hang the clothes to dry. If using a dryer, use the lowest heat setting and a drying cycle that has a cool-down period at the end of the cycle. To prevent clothes from igniting after drying, do not leave the dried clothes in the dryer or piled in a laundry basket. If you are using space heaters this winter, you should know that they are a major cause of fires and injuries. Follow these simple precautions to practice space heater safety this winter. • When purchasing a space heater, make sure that it is approved by a certified testing organization. • Read the manual that came with your space heater before using it. • Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that might be flammable such as furniture, draperies or curtains, bedding, rugs or clothing. • Keep space heaters away from areas where water may come in contact with the heater. • If you intend to use a space heater in the bathroom, check the manual before purchasing to make sure it is safe to use in areas where there is water. • Keep children away from space heaters. Never leave a child unattended in a room where there is a space heater. • Don’t plug a space heater into an extension cord. If you have to use an extension cord, check the manufacturer’s recommendations on the cord and make sure that it is the proper wire gauge size and type. • Don’t use space heaters in areas where flammable liquids such as gasoline or kerosene are used or stored. Space heaters have hot parts that can cause sparking and start a fire. • Never use a space heater to warm bedding, dry clothes, cook food or thaw pipes. • When you’re not using a space heater, turn it off and unplug it. • Turn off and unplug all space heaters before going to bed. GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY

• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure.

the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Proceeds from this event go to an endowment enabling graduating students from CFISD to attend college. The event will be generously underwritten by Earthcare Management and Kodiak Gas Services, as the Missing Man Underwriters. The Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital will be the Major General Sponsor.   This year our guest speaker is Steve Russell. LTC Steve Russell (Ret.) commanded the central unit responsible in the hunt and capture of Saddam Hussein. Through leadership and joint efforts across multiple teams, a large organization worked effectively to capture one of the world’s most notorious criminals. Russell is an American Hero. His proven leadership and problemresolution techniques engage audiences through his storytelling.    Salute to Our Heroes has two purposes. First, to give tribute to our heroes soldiers serving now, veterans and those who have been wounded or killed in action. We want to honor those who have served their country.   The second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students. Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school, and the number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission.   The inaugural event honors Jersey Village High School graduate 1st Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, who was killed December 20, 2007 while serving his country in Iraq. A CFEF endowment was established in Jeremy’s memory by an anonymous donor. Last year the 1st Lieutenant Jeremy Ray Community Service and Peace Award was presented to Klein Funeral Homes & Memorials.   Following tradition, the event will have the Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony. The table will have empty table settings with chairs leaning up against the table as though saved for someone. The table settings have a single red rose displayed in a vase in reminder of the bloodshed for our country and the vase was tied with a red ribbon - a symbol of the continued pledge to shed blood for our country. A slice of lemon on the bread plate is a reminder of the bitterness of the loss of comrades in arms; a bowl of salt to symbolize the tears shed by family members of lost loved ones and glasses turned upside down indicate no one will sit there. Last year’s ceremony was performed by the 75th Army Division Honor Guard and was proceeded by Taps performed by William Veenstra, Cy-Fair High School Senior. Smith Middle School is seeking community mentors to serve as positive role models for our students. Being a community mentor is extremely rewarding and only takes a commitment of 30 minutes to an hour a week to mentor/ meet with one of our 6th, 7th or 8th grade students. CYPRESS RANCH KEY CLUB HELPS SPECIAL OLYMPICS ATHLETES GO FOR THE GOLD

Cypress Ranch Key Club has had a very special relationship with Special Olympics throughout the years. The club has been very busy this fall volunteering at Special Olympics events, both practices and competitions. Kenzie Golladay, a member of the Cy-Ranch Mustang swim team (and also a Key Club officer), used her skills to help with both swim practices and the Houston-area competition in October at the University of Houston. Regarding her help at the Cy-Fair ISD teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s twice-weekly practices, Kenzie said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love doing Special Olympics swimming because it gives me a way to connect and interact with the kids by doing something that I am good at and love.â&#x20AC;? Volunteer coaches are in the water with our school district swimmers encouraging them and helping them learn different techniques and strokes to use in competition. Dozens of Key Club members worked the swim practices, all in the water alongside the athletes. Many volunteers were also Cy-Ranch swimmers.

CHIROPRACTIC HEALTH and WELLNESS CENTER At the October competition, Key Club volunteers helped with everything from scoring to selling spirit items. Cheering the swimmers on helped make the day very memorable for the special needs athletes. Athletes and volunteers alike looked forward to the Awards Ceremony, where the Special Olympics swimmers were awarded medals for their efforts. Kenzie stated, “It makes me so happy to see the smiles and excitement on their faces when they get to swim. They love swimming and it touches my heart that I get to coach them and see the progress that they have made!” Cy-Ranch Key Club loved helping our Cy-Fair ISD swim team prepare for the Houston area competition and celebrate their success. Cy-Ranch student and Special Olympics swimmer Dustyn Henson won two medals at the competition. He was excited to have Cy-Ranch Key Club’s support at practices and at the swim meet. He proudly took pictures at the event with club members who had coached him and cheered him to victory. This fall, Key Club members volunteered on Sunday afternoons with practice for our Cy-Fair ISD bowling team. Several of the bowlers attend Cypress Ranch, so it was nice for both these athletes and Key Club members to work together to prepare for the big December Houston-area bowling competition. Cypress Ranch Key Club members have also volunteered this fall at Special Olympics softball and volleyball tournaments in the Houston area. We enjoy our close association with Special Olympics and plan to volunteer at many events coming up in the spring. In past years, we have volunteered at tennis, track and field, soccer and basketball competitions. We’ve also helped at the end-of-the-year celebration banquet. It’s very rewarding to help with Special Olympics and especially so when Key Club members are able to work with these special athletes who also attend our high school. Several club members have family and friends who are Special Olympics athletes and one Key Club member, Amanda Jean, is a Special Olympics athlete.

Cypress Ranch Key Club celebrated the 66th annual Key Club Week during the week of November 5th -9th. One of the nicest traditions in Key Club is taking part in this worldwide celebration, a time to show your spirit and pride for being part of the best and largest service organization in the world! The first Key Club Week was celebrated in 1946. Although many things have changed in the past 66 years, the excitement and enjoyment that occurs during the chosen week in November has remained. Key Club Week has continued to be celebrated over the years as the perfect way to promote your Key Club, whether you are part of the largest club in the world, like Cypress Ranch or part of the smallest club in the world. CYPRESS RANCH KEY CLUB TEAMS UP WITH THE HOUSTON ROCKETS

Cypress Ranch Key Club loves to volunteer with the Houston Rockets basketball team and is thankful to have been able to volunteer at many major events hosted by the Rockets in our Key Club’s five-year history. In the past, our club has helped man All-Star Balloting booths at Rockets games and served up refreshments for runners at the Rockets annual Rockets Run. beneficiary of the Rockets Run. USO-Houston provides special lounges at Houston’s two major airports where servicemen can relax between flights while traveling. At last year’s event, over $10,000 was raised for Autism Speaks. For the November event, Cy-Ranch Key Club members woke early and boarded a school bus for the trip to Toyota Center in downtown Houston. Members set up fruit and drinks and loaded pizza ovens with hundreds of pizzas. When the race was complete, club members served food and drink to race participants. Club members were supervised by former Cy-Fair High School Key Club officer and Houston Rockets staff member Nathan Sinclair.

Houston residents definitely have Houston Rockets fever with the addition of players Jeremy Lin and James Harden this fall. Our club was thrilled to be invited to work the season opener on November 3rd against the Portland Trail Blazers. Although we have volunteered with the Rockets for five years, this was first year the club has been asked to participate in the Rockets promotional giveaway program. It was an amazing opportunity for the club to interact with the community. Club members reported a couple hours before the doors opened and set up to pass out “A New Age” t-shirts to fans as they entered the Toyota Center. Our club was very grateful for the chance to be involved in this new volunteer opportunity and hope to keep the tradition going for future Rockets games.

We will offer several evaluation days so we can check on their skills so we can even out the teams. The dates for these are February 25th, 26th and 28th, between 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM. Also, on March 2nd at 10:00 AM - 12:00 noon. It only takes a few minutes for us to run them through the drills and then we will contact each player about practices. After March 4th, we cannot guarantee a place on a team. They will practice for one hour a week on a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. Practices begin the week of March 18th and the league runs through May 18th. The cost will be $75. Northwest Flyers Youth Track Club Registration on February 2nd

The Northwest Flyers Youth Track Club will celebrate its 26th Anniversary Season by hosting its annual free information/registration breakfast on Saturday, February 2, 2013, for all boys, girls and their parents who are interested in joining for the 2013 track season. The breakfast starts promptly at 8:30 AM at the Cypress Creek Christian Community Center Forum located at 6823 Cypresswood Dr., Spring, TX, 77379. The free breakfast is the opportunity for youth athletes to register for the club’s 2013 spring/summer track season and to meet the Northwest Flyers coaches, staff and other new and returning athletes. All new parents and athletes interested in joining the Northwest Flyers must attend. The Northwest Flyers Track Club is a youth (ages 6 -18) track club, affiliated with USA Track & Field (USATF), that provides a full program of sanctioned “track” events such as sprints, hurdles, middle distance, distance and relays and sanctioned “field” events such as long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, discus and javelin. Cornerstone United Methodist Church Wesley Covenant Service January 13, 2013

On Sunday, January 13th, during the 8:30 and 10:45 AM worship services as a part of the worship celebration, we will be including the Wesley Covenant Service from the United Methodist Book of Worship. The first usage of the Covenant Service by a meeting of Methodists was August 11, 1755. During the week before that event, Wesley had been encouraging the Society at Spitalfields to use the covenant as a “means of increasing serious religion which had been frequently practiced by our forefathers and attended with eminent blessing.” Several mornings before he actually introduced the liturgy, Wesley explained it again, talking about the manner of doing the covenant. Then on Friday, August 11th, Wesley “recited the tenor of the covenant proposed, in the words of that blessed man, Richard Alleine.” About 1800 people arose and gave testimony of their assent. “Such a night I scarce ever saw before. Surely the fruit of it shall remain forever.” Wesley’s motivation for using the service in 1755 came from two sources: (1) He had recently read Gillies’ Historical Collections which spoke of a solemn renewing of a covenant in Massachusetts in 1680 and (2) Richard Alleine (1611-81) whose influence had touched Wesley’s paternal grandparents and whose covenant had been used in Wesley’s family at Epworth. The use of this service proved so successful that it was used frequently, especially on New Year’s Day or the first Sunday in the New Year. Mark your calendars and make plans to join us for this special service.

The Heart of Relay: During the Relay for Life event, three ceremonies are held Survivors Lap: To start Relay, those who have survived their battle with cancer join together to walk a lap celebrating their victories over the disease. Luminaria Ceremony: At dark, the track is lined with candle-lit bags bearing the names of those who have been touched by or have lost their lives to cancer. Fight Back Ceremony: Before participants leave Relay, they make a personal commitment to help fight back against cancer in several ways. As interest in Relay for Life grew in the Houston area, the American Cancer Society began forming events in local communities and the first Cy-Fair Relay for Life committee was formed in 2004. This is our 9th year in Cy-Fair and our goal is to reach the $1 Million Dollar Mark. Master Gardeners Fruit Tree Sale features triple-grafted apple, peach trees. STANDUP FOR KIDS

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston.
