Message from your HOA President Greetings; Happy New Year! I trust you had a pleasant holiday season and I want to wish you a prosperous and blessed new year. I realize that we have passed New Year’s Day, but it isn’t too late to consider a few resolutions. We mention a few later in the newsletter, but here are a few I would like for you to make, that will help beautify our community and build a sense of pride. • The first resolution is making sure that your trash cans are picked up by the end of trash day. Trashcans are to be stored out of site except when put by the curb for collection. Trash, recycling and yard waste, such as grass clippings or tree limbs, should not be put out until after 6 PM the night before collection. • A second resolution is keeping your lawn maintained. Please vow to keep your lawn mowed, sidewalks edged and your landscaping and trees trimmed. For those of you who have lawn maintenance companies who leave your lawn clippings at the curb, please pick them up until the night before collection. • A third resolution is keeping items not allowed in the deed restrictions out of view from the street, such as trailers, extra vehicles, RVs and boats. • A fourth resolution is keeping the exterior of your home looking nice. This may involve touching up or repainting your house or door. It may also mean removing mold off chimneys. It is amazing how a little paint or cleaning can really make a house look nice. Little things like this really help to make our neighborhood look nice and will reduce the number of letters we have to send out and the number of referrals we have to make to the lawyers. Thank you. Your HOA Board has continued to look at ways of improving our community. This spring, we are looking to complete the following projects: • Remodel the bathrooms at the recreation center • Resurface the deck around the Cypresswood pool • Get new pool furniture for the Cypresswood pool • Replace the playground equipment at the Cypresswood playground • Resurface the Cypresswood playground with turf (the remainder of the HOA owned playgrounds will be done later). We had a good year in 2012 and we are looking forward to a great 2013. Remember, this is your association; your participation and attendance in the meetings is most welcomed. Take care and God Bless, Dennis

Thank you Cypress Mill residents for making our neighborhood look so beautiful this year. Each year, a few homeowners volunteer to select homes and yards that have been decorated Christmas and every year it gets harder and harder to choose just five homes. This year, 2012, was the hardest. Wow! The residents have done a great job celebrating the Birthday of the Christ Child, the true meaning of Christmas. We love all the lights and decorations. The homes that were selected for December Yard of the Month Christmas decorations this year are: 14646 Autumn Glen Ct - Cypress Mill Park II - Front 14622 Timbercliff Lane - Cypress Mill Park II - Back 14806 Cypress Ridge Grove – Park I 14515 Palos Park Dr - Place 14310 Meadow Estates Ln - Estates On Grand Bluff Court, the entire court was decorated. Let’s Be Safe At Home
• Install good deadbolt locks in your doors (not the spring latch ones with a key in the knob). • Avoid door locks that can be manipulated by breaking glass or door panels to reach inside. • Make sure outside doors, including the one between your house and garage, are solid 1 3/4 inch metal or wood and fit tightly in their frames. Hinges should be on the inside. • Secure sliding glass doors with commercially available locks, with a rigid wooden dowel in the track or with a nail inserted through a hole drilled in the sliding door frame and projecting into the fixed frame. • Lock double-hung windows by sliding a bolt or nail through a hole drilled at a downward angle in each top corner of the inside sash and partway through the outside sash or buy window key locks at a hardware store. • Trim back shrubbery that hides doors or windows. Cut back tree limbs that could help a thief climb into second story windows. • Make sure all porches, entrances and yards are well lit. • Do not hide house key above the door or in plant pots or under door mats. Give a duplicate key to a trusted friend or neighbor in case you are locked out.
Cypress Mill
281-256-2345
• Do not put any personal identification on key rings. • Leave only your ignition key with service mechanics and parking garage attendants • If you lose the keys to your home or move into a new home, change the locks immediately. • Install a peephole or wide-angle viewer in all entry doors. A short chain between the door and the jamb is not a good substitute because it can be easily broken. • Do not open the door to anyone you do not know without first verifying that person’s identity. • When answering the telephone, do not give any information to “wrong number” callers. Ask what number they are dialing. • Check references to any person calling about a survey or credit check before volunteering information. Offer to call the person back instead of responding immediately. • Hang up immediately on any threatening or harassing calls. If the caller persists, call the police and the phone company. • Burglars hope to avoid confrontations, so make sure your home looks occupied. • Leave lights on and the radio playing, preferably a talk show, when you go out. • Keep your garage door closed and locked. • Use inexpensive timing devices to turn inside lights and radios or television on and off at different times. • If no one will be at home for more than a few days, arrange to have someone pick up the newspapers. Have deliveries stopped or sent elsewhere. • If you leave your car in the driveway overnight and think you hear someone trying to break in, sound the panic button on your car key which should be kept on your nightstand. This will probably scare them away. These are just a few tips provided courtesy of Ron Hickman, Constable, Precinct 4.
Trash Pickup
Please remember that there is no trash pickup on public holidays. Trash will be picked up on the next scheduled collection day. If the weather is particularly windy and you are setting your trash cans out on the previous evening, make sure that the items inside are secure. Nobody wants to be picking up their neighbor’s trash because the wind has blown the contents out of the bin.

GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY
• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted.
January 2013
Cypress Mill
• Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

Come join our planning committee or register your own team to help raise money for cancer in our Cy-Fair community!! The Heart of Relay: During the Relay for Life event, three ceremonies are held: Survivors Lap: To start Relay, those who have survived their battle with cancer join together to walk a lap celebrating their victories over the disease. Luminaria Ceremony: At dark, the track is lined with candle-lit bags bearing the names of those who have been touched by or have lost their lives to cancer. Fight Back Ceremony: Before participants leave Relay, they make a personal commitment to help fight back against cancer in several ways. As interest in Relay for Life grew in the Houston area, the American Cancer Society began forming events in local communities and the first Cy-Fair Relay for Life committee was formed in 2004. This is our 9th year in Cy-Fair and our goal is to reach the $1 Million Dollar Mark. We are very close and only need $150,000 to meet our goal and with YOUR help, we can make this goal a reality!! 100% of our profits go to ACS to use for research and other programs. With more than 1,000 participants in last year’s Relay, we know that we can grow even bigger this year!
